CIA Chief: We’ll Spy on You Through Your Dishwasher

More and more personal and household devices are connecting to the internet, from your television to your car navigation systems to your light switches. CIA Director David Petraeus cannot wait to spy on you through them.

Earlier this month, Petraeus mused about the emergence of an “Internet of Things” — that is, wired devices — at a summit for In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture capital firm. “‘Transformational’ is an overused word, but I do believe it properly applies to these technologies,” Petraeus enthused, “particularly to their effect on clandestine tradecraft.”

All those new online devices are a treasure trove of data if you’re a “person of interest” to the spy community. Once upon a time, spies had to place a bug in your chandelier to hear your conversation. With the rise of the “smart home,” you’d be sending tagged, geolocated data that a spy agency can intercept in real time when you use the lighting app on your phone to adjust your living room’s ambiance.

“Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored, and remotely controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification, sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters — all connected to the next-generation internet using abundant, low-cost, and high-power computing,” Petraeus said, “the latter now going to cloud computing, in many areas greater and greater supercomputing, and, ultimately, heading to quantum computing.”

Revealed: How FORTY foreign 'predatory rapists' who were convicted abroad are at large in London

More than 40 foreign 'predatory rapists' convicted of sex offences abroad have been discovered living in London, Scotland Yard revealed today.

Met commander Steve Rodhouse said his officers were looking at a range of tactics to target them and get them deported.

Today he launched a new 100-strong 'Nexus Unit' to stop 'criminals from overseas' committing crime in the capital.

Bankers admit they are STILL paid too much and encouraged to rip us off

The majority of bankers admit some of their colleagues are ‘paid excessively’ and in a way that can ‘incentivise inappropriate behaviour’, a damning study warned today.

Nearly five years after the financial crisis began in 2008, the report highlights how little the banking industry has changed - according to its own workers.

It follows a devastating few years for an industry which the taxpayer was forced to bail out, a lifeline which has been followed by a series of shocking scandals.

These range from the manipulation of key interest rates, the ripping off of vulnerable investors and the mis-selling of loans to small firms.

German, Czech floods begin to recede

Merkel urged to come clean on Greek debt relief

Germany's opposition Social Democrats demanded that Chancellor Angela Merkel come clean about the risk of losses on government loans to Greece before a looming election, after the IMF said Athens may require additional debt relief as early as next year.

Carsten Schneider, budget expert for the SPD in parliament, accused Merkel and her Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble of being dishonest with voters by trying to push back a discussion of Germany's exposure to Greece until after the September 22 vote.

His comments on Thursday came a day after IMF economist Paul Thomsen said European governments had committed to providing more debt relief if Greece's primary budget balance fell short of target in 2013 or 2014.

CIA does not know which 'militants' are killed in drone strikes as it emerges a QUARTER of victims are unidentified

The CIA does not know the identity of a quarter of those killed in drone strikes in Pakistan, it has been claimed.

U.S. officials have hailed the use of drones as a way of carrying out precision operations which target terrorists while avoiding civilian casualties.

However, the new findings cast doubt on these claims, suggesting that spy chiefs are unable to work out exactly who the victims of drones really are.

NYPD cop 'shoots wife dead in the street before turning shotgun on himself'

An off-duty policeman shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself in Queens, New York, last night.

Police said the 33-year-old officer chased his wife outside their home in the St Albans area and shot her dead in front of a neighbor's house.

He is said to have used a shotgun to shoot her four times at around before shooting himself dead.

The officer's 46-year-old wife, who also worked for the NYPD as a school safety agent, was said to be wearing her work uniform at the time of the shooting.

Ex-drone operator who helped kill 1,626 targets says a military recruiter advertised the job as similar to a role in a James Bond movie

A former drone operator who helped kill 1,626 targets says he was drawn to the job by a military recruiter who promised he could 'be like the smart guys in the control room in a James Bond movie,' NBC News is reporting.

Brandon Bryant, 27, served as a drone operator from 2006 to 2011 at bases in Nevada, New Mexico and Iraq. It was a desk job of sorts, but unlike any other, it involved ordering unmanned aircraft to kill faraway targets while he watched from behind a computer screen.

In an interview with NBC News' foreign correspondent Richard Engel, Bryant recalled one operation where his team fired two missiles from a drone at three men in Afghanistan.

We DID make Greece's debt crisis worse with brutal cuts and tax hikes, IMF admits as Greeks say they 'can't forgive' officials for making recession worse

The International Monetary Fund has admitted 'notable failures' in the handling of the Greek bailout which could have made the crisis worse.

An official report suggests that the harsh austerity regime imposed on the struggling country could have been counter-productive, as it increased Greece's debt burden by restricting economic growth.

The fund also expressed regret at the failure to restructure Greek debt early on by forcing bondholders to take a loss on their investments.

Road blocks, police helicopters and blacked-out windows: But just who are the billionaires and politicians arriving for secretive Bilderberg conference at Watford hotel and what do they do there?

Billionaire business executives, high-ranking political figures and even members of royal families are expected to be among the 130 or so attendees at the Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire. Amid tight security, protesters including Steve Jolly (left) from the organisation No CCTV gathered in an encampment outside the hotel. Meanwhile, a banner declaring 'Bilderberg ate my hamster' was placed on a security barrier (top right) as police stood guard (bottom right) around a massive ring of steel thrown up around the estate.

For Greeks, IMF mea culpa comes too late

Greeks reacted with a mix of vindication and outrage at the International Monetary Fund's admission it erred in its handling of the country's bailout, berating an apology that comes too late to salvage an economy and countless lives in ruins.

Anger was palpable on the streets of Athens, where the EU-IMF austerity recipe that the Washington-based fund says it sharply misjudged has left rows of shuttered stores and many scrounging for scraps of food in trash cans.

"Really? Thanks for letting us know but we can't forgive you," said Apostolos Trikalinos, a 59-year old garbage collector and a father of two.

"Let's not fool ourselves. They'll never give us anything back. I'm sorry for all the people who killed themselves because of austerity. How are we going to bring them back? How?"

Erdogan condemns protesters' tactics

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan condemned the "burn and destroy" tactics of some of those involved in days of violent protests on Thursday, and promised to press ahead with plans for an Istanbul park which triggered the unrest.

Speaking on a visit to Tunisia, Erdogan said "terror groups" were manipulating what had started as an environmental campaign, and added that seven foreigners were among those arrested.

"If you say: 'I will hold a meeting and burn and destroy', we will not allow that," he told reporters after meeting his Tunisian counterpart. "We are against the majority dominating the minority and we cannot tolerate the opposite."

ATM 'Shoulder Surfing' Card Fraud On Rise

The number of people becoming victims of cash-machine fraud is on the rise, according to figures from Financial Fraud Action UK.

There were 7,525 cases reported in the first four months of 2013 compared with 2,553 for the same period last year, said the UK banking industry body set up to fight fraud.

While skimming devices are still used to capture card details at ATMs, "shoulder surfing" is on the rise too.

That fraud involves distracting the card holder as the thief peers over the cardholder's shoulder as they enter their PIN number and subsequently stealing the card itself.

White House defends Spying on American Citizens

The Obama administration on Thursday acknowledged that it is collecting a massive amount of telephone records from at least one carrier, reopening the debate over privacy even as it defended the practice as necessary to protect Americans against attack.

The admission comes after the Guardian newspaper published a secret court order related to the records of millions of Verizon Communications customers on its website on Wednesday.

A senior administration official said the court order pertains only to data such as a telephone number or the length of a call, and not the subscribers' identities or the content of the telephone calls.

Such information is "a critical tool in protecting the nation from terrorist threats to the United States," the official said, speaking on the condition of not being named.

Turkey Protests Continue As Erdogan Returns

As protests continue in Turkey for the seventh day, supporters of the prime minister have been urged not to welcome him on his return from abroad.

"The prime minister does not need a show of power," deputy PM Huseyin Celik said after thousands of angry demonstrators called for the resignation of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

When Mr Erdogan flew out of Turkey on Monday - on a four-day visit to north Africa - he dismissed the protests, saying they would have died down before he returned.

However, protests continued, with police on Wednesday evening using tear gas and water cannon to disperse demonstrators in Ankara's central Kizilay Square.

A Washington woman suffering from mental and hearing disabilities was left with severe bruises on her face after she claims an officer punched over and over her because she could not understand his orders.

Megan Graham, 36, of Federal Way, dialed 911 while being arrested last Monday to complain about police brutality after being pulled over by an officer and hit in the face.

Things quickly spiraled out of control during Graham's run-in with police officers, whom the 36-year-old disabled woman had accused of hitting her several times in the face while attempting to restrain her.

The Federal Way Police Department, however, insists that it was Graham who was violent and disorderly.

NSA is collecting phone records of EVERY Verizon customer daily under top secret order - even if they are not suspected of anything

The National Security Agency is collecting telephone records for millions of Americans without informing the individuals involved, it was revealed late on Wednesday night.

A copy of a secret order to obtain phone records for all Verizon customers was obtained, showing that the NSA was monitoring all incoming and outgoing calls made on that network.

The backlash will not stop with the millions Americans who are Verizon customers as there is no way of knowing if other phone companies have had the same clandestine order placed upon them as well.

The Guardian obtained a copy of the order that forces the phone company to hand over records of phone calls starting in late April for all of its customers on a 'ongoing, daily basis' without giving specific parameters.

Julie Smith spared jail despite spending £125,000 of daughter's disability benefits on bingo and designer clothes

A mother who spent her disabled daughter's benefits on bingo and weekends away today insisted she was not a bad parent.

Despite spending £124,536 intended for 25-year-old daughter Hayley, Julie Smith, 46, blamed her addiction to gambling saying it was a release from caring.

Birmingham Crown Court heard that Hayley has cerebral palsy and is unable to walk or talk and as a result receives money for her car, day centre trips and specialist equipment.

Thought there was nothing left to shock you about the 111 helpline chaos? Read why this call handler can't sleep at night

All this week the Mail has been highlighting the shocking scale of the crisis in Britain’s out-of-hours care. Yesterday we exposed the GPs who made millions out of the helplines — while patients using the service complained of terrible neglect. Today, a whistleblower reveals the chaos in a 111 call centre . . .

The voice on the end of the line is fraught, frightened. ‘My husband has just been discharged from a psychiatric unit. He has no medication and he needs it urgently,’ the woman pleads. ‘He has to see a doctor now. I’m afraid he might kill someone.’

In the background I hear a man shouting, raving. He says he is possessed by devils. It is quite obvious why the woman is scared. I try to calm and reassure her, but I have so little faith in the system I’m operating, I fear for her safety.

It is early evening, ten minutes before the end of my shift as a call handler for NHS 111, the round-the-clock patients’ helpline, and all I can do is follow procedure.

The dispatcher who organises the on-call doctors’ workload is alerted to the case.

But the woman may have to wait ten, 12, even 14 hours until help arrives; by which time the man, who is clearly violent and deranged, could have attacked his wife.

Garment makers pressured in Cambodia

As investment in Cambodia's textile industry surges, so is labor unrest, putting pressure on suppliers to the world's big garment brands to raise wages and improve sometimes grim conditions in one of the last bastions of low-cost factories.

Hundreds of angry workers rampaged this week through a textile plant in Cambodia that supplies U.S. sportswear company Nike Inc, clashing with police over their demands for a pay hike.

The violence came just weeks after over 1,100 workers were killed in the collapse of a building housing garment factories in Bangladesh, another impoverished Asian nation where mass-produced textiles are the biggest export earner.

U.S. lawmakers to introduce new bill to punish cyber theft

A day before Chinese President Xi Jinping visits the United States, three U.S. lawmakers plan to propose a new law that would punish hackers backed by China, Russia or other foreign governments for cyber spying and theft.

The new bill that would go after specific hackers from "offending nations" with "real consequences and punishments" will be introduced on Thursday by House of Representatives Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, a Republican from Michigan, Democratic Representative Tim Ryan of Ohio and Republican Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin.

Rogers, whose office did not immediately release further details of the bill, leads cybersecurity efforts in Congress. He has co-authored a cybersecurity bill meant to ease sharing of cyber threat data between companies and the government that passed the House earlier this year.

ECB seen holding rates as it waits for signs of euro zone recovery

The European Central Bank is expected to keep its main interest rate at a record low 0.5 percent on Thursday but tweaks to its economic forecasts may give investors a steer on the future direction of policy.

The euro zone's central bank cut its main rate last month and signaled it was ready to do more should a recovery not materialize in the second half of the year as it expects.

With economic data improving in May, the ECB will probably want to save its last remaining policy firepower for a later date, while stressing it is not out of ammunition.

Tibetan self-immolations show new phase of defiance

The slim, rosy-cheeked mother of four was a devout Tibetan Buddhist, a close relative says. But her visits to the Dzamthang Jonang monastery this spring were out of character. So too were the spiritual mantras Kalkyi had begun to chant several times a day, and the way she had taken to prostrating herself in the monastery at least twice a day.

On the chilly afternoon of March 24, Kalkyi - who like some Tibetans went by just one name - stood outside the monastery gates with about 200 to 300 other worshippers. She doused herself with gasoline and lit a match. Flames instantly engulfed her, and as they did, she shouted words that no one could make out.

Witnesses say it took less than 15 minutes for the blaze to kill Kalkyi. She was 30 years old.

Geoffrey Bettley cleared to work in schools despite possessing indecent images of children

A religious education teacher sacked for possessing indecent images of children should be allowed to return to work in schools, a panel has ruled.

Geoffrey Bettley, 36, was suspended from a West Yorkshire school in December 2010 after police found nearly 200 child abuse images on his computer.

He accepted a police caution and was dismissed by the school.

A professional conduct panel has now ruled the teacher does not "represent a risk to children or young people".

Syria rebels seize crossing near Israeli border - activists

Rebels seized a U.N.-operated border crossing on the demilitarized zone linking Israel and Syria on Thursday, activists said, following heavy clashes between the opposition and President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

It is the only crossing between the two countries and it was the first time Syrian rebels had managed to take the place. However, it was unclear if they could hold it for long, with fighting still raging in the area.

Israel is worried that the Golan, which it captured from Syria in 1967, will become a springboard for attacks on Israelis by jihadi fighters, who are taking part in the armed struggle against Assad.

Report: Gov't Collecting Verizon Phone Records

The National Security Administration is secretly collecting phone record information for all U.S. calls on the Verizon network. “Under the terms of the blanket order, the numbers of both parties on a call are handed over, as is location data, call duration, unique identifiers, and the time and duration of all calls,” reports The Guardian, which broke the story of the top-secret project after it obtained record of a court order mandating Verizon hand over the information.

The contents of the call are not recorded and it is also not known whether Verizon is the only cell-phone carrier complying with the massive spying project. The court order concerns all calls to, from, and within the United States.

With this so-called “metadata,” the government knows “the identity of every person with whom an individual communicates electronically, how long they spoke, and their location at the time of the communication,” explains the Guardian.

IMF's Greek mistakes linger as central banks meet

There were notable successes during the SBA-supported program (May 2010–March
2012). Strong fiscal consolidation was achieved and the pension system was put on a
viable footing. Greece remained in the euro area, which was its stated political
preference. Spillovers that might have had a severe effect on the global economy were
relatively well-contained, aided by multilateral efforts to build firewalls.

However, there were also notable failures. Market confidence was not restored, the
banking system lost 30 percent of its deposits, and the economy encountered a muchdeeper-
than-expected recession with exceptionally high unemployment. Public debt
remained too high and eventually had to be restructured, with collateral damage for
bank balance sheets that were also weakened by the recession. Competitiveness
improved somewhat on the back of falling wages, but structural reforms stalled and
productivity gains proved elusive.

Top Labour donor's share gift avoided £1.5m tax

The Labour Party avoided paying hundreds of thousands of pounds in tax from one of its biggest donors, it was claimed.

John Mills said he gave the Party £1.65 million in shares rather than cash because it reduced the proportion that would have to be paid in tax. He described it as “tax efficient”.

He explained in an interview with The Daily Telegraph, which claimed the donation has avoided up to £1.5 million this year, that the idea for it to be made in shares from his shopping channel company JMI, came during discussions with Labour.

Rohingya violence effect: 900 Myanmar nationals detained in Malaysia

Malaysian police said today they had detained more than 900 Myanmar nationals in a security sweep after at least two were killed last week in clashes believed to be linked to sectarian violence back home.

The two dead were likely Myanmar Buddhists killed during a spate of violent incidents in Kuala Lumpur since May 30, said Amar Singh Ishar Singh, the Malaysian capital's deputy police chief.

He added that two other people were in critical condition and the attacks were "believed to be the result of violence in Myanmar."

Pentagon official: Russian warships may be carrying weapons to Syria

CNN has learned that U.S. intelligence agencies have identified three Russian amphibious warships in the eastern Mediterranean that are believed to be carrying weapons shipments that might be used to resupply the Syrian regime, according to a Pentagon official.

The official declined to be named due to the sensitive nature of the information.

The United States has been tracking the ships since they left Russian ports several days ago. U.S. satellites were able to see some indications of containers being loaded onto the ships. Although it's not confirmed, it's believed the ships may be carrying some components of the controversial Russian S-300 air defense missile system and other weapons for the regime.

Germans Join to Battle Rising Floods Threatening Historic Cities

Firefighters, soldiers and volunteers in eastern Germany toiled through the night to defend against floods that have submerged towns, villages and farmlands for the second time in 11 years.

Crews in Dresden, home to the 18th century Frauenkirche that was rebuilt after German re-unification in 1990 and which narrowly escaped serious damage in the last deluge, have evacuated more than 1,300 people from low-lying areas as the Elbe River inches closer to the 9.4-meter (31 feet) high recorded in 2002. The water stood at 8.6 meters as of 7 p.m. yesterday evening, according to German authorities.

The floods, triggered by unseasonal heavy rainfall, are part of the worst in Central Europe since 2002, when rising waters overwhelmed towns and cities in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and the Danube region. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced in Germany and rail, road and river traffic disrupted by the rising waters.

N. Korea proposes talks with South

North Korea on Thursday proposed talks with South Korea about restarting operations at their shared manufacturing zone where Pyongyang suspended activity during recent tensions.

In a statement carried by state-run media, the North's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea suggested that the talks also cover the possibility of resuming cross-border tours at a North Korean mountain resort where a South Korean tourist was shot in 2008.

"Such humanitarian issues as the reunion of separated families and their relatives can be discussed at the talks, if necessary," the North Korean statement said.

Turkey: Family mourns slain protester

Turkish social media users arrested

Thousands of people of all ages gathered Wednesday evening in Ugur Mumcu square in Antakya, a picturesque town in the Hatay province of Turkey.

They chanted "Tayyip istifa!" or "Tayyip resign," demanding that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan leave office. On nearly every street, CNN journalists heard pots and pans banging and saw security forces.

The authorities, who have violently clashed with protesters across Turkey, seemed to be avoiding the demonstrators.

Though it was mostly quiet around 10 p.m. local time in Antakya, it seemed that the situation nationally was only getting worse.

Leak Found in Steel Tank for Water at Fukushima

The operator of the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant said Wednesday that it had found a leak in one of the hundreds of steel tanks used to store radioactive water at the plant, raising renewed questions about the company’s ability to handle the plant’s cleanup.

The discovery comes a day after the operator, the Tokyo Electric Power Company, or Tepco, admitted that it had found cesium particles in groundwater flowing into the Fukushima Daiichi plant, reversing its earlier assertion that the water was uncontaminated.

The company stressed that the size of the tank leak was small — the equivalent of about a quart had dripped out so far, it said — and that the level of radioactivity in groundwater was within safe levels. However, the problems are the latest in a string of mistakes and mishaps that have added to mounting criticism of the government’s decision to leave the tricky cleanup in the hands of Tepco, the company that many say allowed the triple meltdown two years ago to happen in the first place.
