EU: Immigration Tops List Of UK Concerns

A national referendum on whether the UK should remain a member of the European Union would result in an extremely narrow victory for those wanting to leave.

An exclusive survey undertaken for Sky News asked the question: "Do you think that the United Kingdom should remain a member of the European Union?" - 51% voted No, with 49% supporting the Yes option.

Taking into account the margin of error on all poll findings this means the referendum vote is effectively too close to call.

Jeffrey Feldman: Must decrypt computer, incriminate self in direct violation of constituation... or face "indefinite prison time without trial"

If a judge orders you to decrypt the only existing copies of incriminating files, are your constitutional rights against compelled self-incrimination being violated?

That’s the provocative question being raised as a Wisconsin man faces a deadline today either to give up his encryption keys or risk indefinite imprisonment without a trial. The defendant’s attorney, Robin Shellow of Milwaukee, said it’s “one of the most important constitutional issues of the wired era.”

Shellow is making a novel argument that the federal magistrate’s decryption order is akin to forcing her client to build a case for the government. That’s because encryption basically transforms files into unreadable text, which is then rebuilt when the proper password is entered, she said.

“Some encryption effects erasure of the encrypted data (so it ceases to exist), in which case decryption constitutes re-creation of the data, rather than simply unlocking still-existing data,” Shellow wrote in a court filing. (.pdf)

In a telephone interview Monday, she said “this area is a new way of thinking about encryption.”

Possible gas blast on New York college campus hurts seven faculty

A possible natural gas explosion blew out windows of a historic building at Nyack College north of New York City on Tuesday, injuring seven faculty members, a Rockland County sheriff's spokesman said.

"The whole first floor got blown out - shrapnel and glass flew everywhere," William Barbera, chief of the sheriff's patrol, told Reuters.

After the explosion, which occurred at about noon (1600 GMT), fire and bomb investigators rushed to the campus in Nyack, about 30 miles north of New York City.

Seven-Foot Alligator Rescued From Basement

An Ohio man may face animal cruelty charges for keeping a seven-foot alligator in his suburban home basement, authorities have said.

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton removed the reptile from the man's home in Huber Heights on Sunday after getting a tip about mistreatment.

Local officials said the alligator was not being kept in proper conditions and was not on being fed the correct food.

Oklahoma Tornado: EF5 Twister 'Widest Ever'

The US National Weather Service says the deadly tornado that struck near Oklahoma City last Friday was the widest twister ever recorded.

The 2.6-mile-wide (4km) tornado, which hit the town of El Reno, has also been upgraded to an EF5 category - the top of the scale - and had winds reaching 295mph.

The twister's extreme breadth made it difficult for people to even recognise it as a tornado, said Rick Smith, the Weather Service's chief warning coordination meteorologist in Norman, Oklahoma.

Meteorologists had initially classified it as an EF3, but changed its ranking on Tuesday after surveying the widespread damage.

Tests Prove Sarin Gas Used In Syrian Civil War

France has said tests on chemical samples taken from Syria prove that the deadly nerve agent sarin gas has been used several times during the civil conflict.

Foreign minister Laurent Fabius made the announcement on Tuesday, citing tests carried out by a French laboratory, but did not give any details of where or by whom the poison gas had been used.

He said: "These tests show the presence of sarin in various samples in our possession.

Forget North Sea oil, new map shows massive gas deposits under UK that could keep us self sufficient for years....That is if Brussels doesn't take it all away

A technical study of 300 square mile area from Liverpool to Manchester shows that enough gas is under the ground to keep lights on in the UK for years. The revised estimate suggests that in excess of 100 trillion cubic feet of shale gas is stored in a huge reserve - much more than the 3 trillion cubic feet the UK uses annually.

James Holmes, the man suspected of killing 12 people last July in a packed cinema, has been allowed to enter a new plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Holmes is charged with staging a meticulously planned assault on a packed movie theatre in the Denver suburb of Aurora in July during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises, killing 12 people and injuring 70 others.

Holmes' lawyer had requested in mid-May that his client be allowed to change his plea from not guilty, to not guilty by reason of insanity.

The judge in the case, Carlos Samour Jr, had previously indicated he would likely accept the plea change.

Both Assad and rebels committing war crimes, atrocities a ‘daily reality’ in Syrian civil war: UN

A UN report on Syria said Tuesday there are “reasonable grounds” to believe that limited quantities of toxic chemicals have been used as weapons in at least four attacks in Syria’s civil war, but that more evidence is needed to determine the precise chemical agents used or who used them.

The UN Commission of Inquiry said conclusive findings can be reached only after testing samples taken directly from victims or the site of the alleged attacks. It called on Damascus to allow a team of experts into the country, saying lack of access continues to hamper the commission’s ability to fulfil its mandate.

U.S. President Barack Obama had previously declared the use of chemical weapons his “red line” for forceful U.S. intervention in Syria. He has since come under pressure to take action amid mounting allegations that President Bashar Assad’s regime has crossed that line.

U.S. blacklists global network of Iranian 'front' companies

A global network of private companies were blacklisted by the United States on Tuesday for providing revenue to the Iranian government and helping Tehran evade international sanctions on its nuclear program, the U.S. Treasury Department said.

The move targets 37 companies spread across the world, from Iran to Croatia, Germany and South Africa, and is the fourth action the United States has taken in the past week to sanction Iran's government over its atomic program.

The sanctions prohibit U.S. citizens and companies from dealing with the firms. Any foreign financial institutions dealing with them risk getting cut off from the U.S. financial system.

The former boss of a French domestic intelligence agency who once described himself as a "minesweeper of the republic" has been found dead in his Paris home, according to reports.

Yves Bertrand was director of the Renseignements Generaux between 1992 and 2004 - the agency kept a watch on individuals or organisations that it believed could harm the state.

It was sometimes accused of being a "secret police" organ as it was run by the national police.

The 69-year-old was found dead on Monday in his apartment in the 8th district of Paris by the building caretaker who did not know the cause of Mr Bertrand's death, an anonymous source said.

Turkey Offers Apology But Protests Continue

Turkey's government has attempted to quell protests by apologising for a police crackdown on a peaceful protest that has triggered ongoing rallies across the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said it was "wrong and unjust" for police to fire tear gas at the original demonstration to save Gezi Park in Istanbul last week.

Since the park protest, demonstrations - both peaceful and violent - have stretched out to five days in Istanbul, Ankara and other cities, as angry protesters voice their discontent with the 10-year rule of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Hamilton street trees dying needless deaths, resident says

Nicholas Schwetz often walks the same route from his home at Charlton and Locke to the Good Life Fitness in Jackson Square. And after doing it for a while, he started to notice the state of the city trees along the sidewalk.

Some of them are non-native species. Some have metal grates hugging the tree trunks, sometimes so close that the trunks grow into the grates. Other grates are broken and people have stuffed litter into the tree pits.

It's spring, a time when buds open and leaves unfurl. But some of the trees on downtown streets aren't growing leaves at all.

Schwetz knows trees. He's an ecologist with a degree in environmental resource studies and a diploma in ecosystem restoration.

Death toll reaches 18 in Oklahoma tornadoes, storms

The death toll from deadly tornadoes and severe flooding that struck Oklahoma on Friday and Saturday has risen to 18, including 12 adults and six children, with the bodies of seven people still unidentified, the state's chief medical examiner said on Monday.

Officials on Monday added five victims - three adults and two unidentified children - to the tally of confirmed deaths, said Amy Elliott, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office.

Friday's spate of tornadoes landed just 11 days after a massive EF5 tornado, the most powerful rating, tore into Oklahoma City and its suburb of Moore, killing 24 people. Moore sustained limited damage in Friday's storms.

German defence minister Thomas de Maizière accused of covering up bungled Euro Hawk drone project

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Defence Minister was fighting for his political survival yesterday amid reports that his office tried to cover up a scandal over the bungled purchase of a multi-million surveillance drone which proved too dangerous to be flown in European air space.

Thomas de Maizière is regarded as one of Angela Merkel’s closest allies and has been tipped as her possible successor. But the 59-year-old conservative Defence Minister faced calls for his resignation yesterday as the scandal surrounding his ministry’s Euro Hawk surveillance drone project worsened.

“This is a case of wasting money to an unimaginable degree,” said the opposition Social Democrat spokesman Thomas Oppermann in an interview in which he demanded the Defence Minister’s resignation. “Somebody has to take the political responsibility for this,” he added.

Mr de Maiziere stands accused of wasting €600m of taxpayers’ money by ordering the Euro Hawk drone from the US manufacturer Northrop Grumman, only to establish – five years after signing the contract – that the European Aviation Safety Agency would not allow the drone to fly in Europe.

A look at Record flooding across Europe

Is Turkey the next Arab Spring?

Taksim Square is Istanbul's equivalent to Cairo's Tahrir Square or London's Trafalgar Square and it is now the epicenter of demonstrations triggered by construction plans for a shopping center in one of the city's few remaining green spaces.

What was initially a small sit-in has morphed into a major series of protests due to -- in the words of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan -- "excessive force" by the police.

These protests reflect, in part, the deep ideological polarization between secular, liberal-minded Turks, and the more religious Turks, representing a quarter and two-thirds of the population respectively based on the 2011 general election results.

Many secular Turks complainthat the Islamist-rooted government is intolerant of criticism and the diversity of lifestyles. So far, Erdogan's robust and muscular stance vis-à-vis the demonstrators has reinforced those perceptions.

Floods sweep through Prague, move towards Germany

Swathes of suburban Prague were under water on Tuesday after floods which have killed 11 people swept across central Europe, and the deluge moved towards Germany where more than 10,000 people have been forced from their homes.

Areas to the south and north of the Czech capital were submerged, including the city's zoo and horse racing track, in the worst flooding in a decade which followed days of heavy rain. But metal barriers erected along the Vltava river banks protected the historical city center.

Chemical Weapons Used by BOTH Sides In Syria: UN Report

Investigators have "reasonable grounds" to believe chemical weapons have been used in Syria, according to a UN report.

The organisation's human rights group said they had received allegations that both the Government and rebels had used limited quantities of toxic substances, but most testimony related to their use by state forces.

Paul Pinheiro, the chair of the commission, said: "It has not been possible, on the evidence available, to determine the precise chemical agents used, their delivery systems or the perpetrator."

Turkey Apologies To Protesters As Strike Starts, Government Blames Police

The Turkish government has apologised to people wounded in days of clashes and blamed police for sparking the initial clashes.

Overnight riot police in Istanbul and Ankara fired tear gas and water cannon at protesters who set cars ablaze and hurled stones in a fifth day of anti-government rallies that have now claimed the lives of two people.

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc this morning blamed the firing of tear gas by police for sparking Friday's clashes that erupted at a demonstration to save a public park in Istanbul.

Contraband Found On Prison Cat

A feline felon which hoped to play cat and mouse with prison guards and sneak contraband into a Russian jail has been caught red-handed.

The cat was detained midway through its clandestine mission, when it was spotted scaling the fence of the prison near Syktyvkar with handsets and chargers taped to its body.

Night time protests in Istanbul

China poultry plant fire kills at least 119

Relatives scuffle with police after China fire

Relatives of workers killed as fire swept through a poultry slaughterhouse in rural northeast China blocked traffic and scuffled with police on Tuesday demanding answers to one of China's worst industrial disasters in recent years. At least 120 people died.

A handful of men and woman knelt in the middle of the road in Dehui in Jilin province to stop cars, while a crowd of more than 100 people gathered around them. Police dispersed the protesters after about an hour.

Zhao Zhenchun, who lost both his wife and his sister in the fire, said human error was to blame for the death toll. "I don't think safety was being managed properly. This should never happen again. They paid the price with their blood. So many of these big disasters in China are caused by lax supervision," he said.

China warns U.N. against 'irresponsible remarks' on North Koreans

China warned the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees on Monday against making "irresponsible remarks" about nine North Korean defectors the U.N. believes were repatriated to their isolated, authoritarian homeland by China last week.

The United Nations said on Friday that it was concerned about China's return of the nine young people to North Korea, where they face severe punishment, possibly execution, for having fled.

The nine, all believed to be orphans, were first sent back to China after crossing into Laos. The office of the UNHCR said last week it was seeking clarification from both China and Laos.

Afghan colonel arrested in prisoner torture case; US link suspected

An Afghan army colonel has been arrested by the government for illegally handing over prisoners to a man working with a U.S. special forces team that was accused of torture and killings, three sources have told Reuters.

The rare arrest of a senior military officer underlines the resolve of Kabul in cracking down on excesses in the 12-year-long civil war ahead of an election next year.

It also plays into government efforts to distance itself from the West as it woos Taliban insurgents to join peace talks ahead of the withdrawal of international combat troops in 2014.

Pistorius Bail Extended: murder trial postponed until Aug 19- S. African magistrate

A South African judge on Tuesday postponed until August 19 the murder trial of global athletics star Oscar Pistorius, who has been charged with shooting dead his girlfriend on Valentine's Day.

Pistorius, 26, had to make his way through a scrum of photographers and reporters as he made his first formal public appearance since his release on bail in February.

The double amputee athlete, nicknamed "Blade Runner" for the prosthetics he uses in competition, has admitted shooting Reeva Steenkamp, 29, four times through a locked bathroom door on February 14 at his home in an affluent Pretoria community.

Turkish unions join protests

Pockets of protesters clashed with Turkish riot police overnight and a union federation began a two-day strike on Tuesday as anti-government demonstrations in which two people have died stretched into a fifth day.

Hundreds of police and protesters have been injured since Friday, when a demonstration to halt construction in a park in an Istanbul square grew into mass protests against a heavy-handed police crackdown and what opponents call Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's authoritarian policies.

A 22-year-old protester was shot dead late on Monday at a rally in the southern town of Antakya near the Syrian border, the provincial governor's office said, the second death after a taxi hit a demonstrator in Istanbul on Sunday. It was not clear who opened fire at the demonstration.
