Global warming debunked? NASA report verifies carbon dioxide actually cools atmosphere

Practically everything you have been told by the mainstream scientific community and the media about the alleged detriments of greenhouse gases, and particularly carbon dioxide, appears to be false, according to new data compiled by NASA's Langley Research Center. As it turns out, all those atmospheric greenhouse gases that Al Gore and all the other global warming hoaxers have long claimed are overheating and destroying our planet are actually cooling it, based on the latest evidence.

As reported by Principia Scientific International (PSI), Martin Mlynczak and his colleagues over at NASA tracked infrared emissions from the earth's upper atmosphere during and following a recent solar storm that took place between March 8-10. What they found was that the vast majority of energy released from the sun during this immense coronal mass ejection (CME) was reflected back up into space rather than deposited into earth's lower atmosphere.

The result was an overall cooling effect that completely contradicts claims made by NASA's own climatology division that greenhouse gases are a cause of global warming. As illustrated by data collected using Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER), both carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitric oxide (NO), which are abundant in the earth's upper atmosphere, greenhouse gases reflect heating energy rather than absorb it.

Man kidnapped in Queens, held for month, tortured: New York

Authorities say two New York City men and a New Jersey man kidnapped another man off a Queens street in broad daylight and held him for over a month, demanding $3 million from his family in Ecuador as ransom.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown says the men have been charged with kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment and face up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

Authorities say the men grabbed 52-year-old Pedro Portugal on April 18, with one of the men pretending to have a police badge. Portugal was kept in a warehouse, where he was beaten and burned with acid.

Brown says Portugal was forced to call his family in Ecuador and ask for the ransom.

He was rescued by police detectives on May 20.

U.S. may boost Syria rebels if Assad won't talk peace

Washington threatened on Wednesday to increase support for Syria's rebels if President Bashar al-Assad refuses to discuss a political end to a civil war that is spreading across borders.

Rebels called for reinforcements to combat an "invasion" by Hezbollah and its Iranian backers, days after President Bashar al-Assad's forces launched an offensive against a strategic town that could prove to be a turning point in the war.

The battle for the town of Qusair has brought the worst fighting in months in a war that has already killed more than 80,000 people, and by drawing in Hezbollah has spread sectarian violence across frontiers at the heart of the Middle East.

Femen protester stages mock suicide at Notre Dame cathedral

A member of the militant feminist group Femen, known for its provocative topless protests, on Wednesday staged a mock suicide in Notre Dame cathedral in the French capital, less than 24 hours after a far-right historian killed himself there in front of visitors and church-goers.

Posing with a pistol in her mouth the woman, who had "May fascism rest in hell" written in black letters across her naked torso, was detained by security guards. She was then arrested by police outside the cathedral and taken to the nearby police station.

Iceland's next prime minister halts EU membership talks

The leader of a centre-right party has been chosen as Iceland's new prime minister and promptly announced a halt to talks about joining the EU.

Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson said on Wednesday: "The government intends to halt negotiations between Iceland and the European Union. We will not hold further negotiations with the European Union without prior referendum."

Iceland has engaged in on-and-off talks with the EU for several years. Gunnlaugsson's Progressive party has been opposed, in part because it fears membership would mean giving up control of Iceland's fishing stocks.

The new government will also include Bjarni Benediktsson, head of the conservative Independent party, who will serve as minister of finance.

Mysterious respiratory illness strikes 7 in Alabama; 2 dead

Two people have died and five others have been hospitalized in a mysterious cluster of respiratory illnesses in southeast Alabama, state health officials said.

The victims, all adults, had symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath, but the cause of the illnesses is unknown, said Dr. Mary McIntyre, the acting state epidemiologist for the Alabama Department of Public Health. The hospital is using respiratory precautions, which include requiring staff to wear special N95 masks that reduce the chance of infection.

State health officials have collected and analyzed samples of specimens from all patients. So far, one sample has tested positive for H1N1 influenza A, but it's not clear that that is behind the unusual illnesses. There's no evidence of other kinds of flu, including the H7N9 strain that has caused illness and death in China, McIntyre said.

Laboratory samples have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but testing results are not yet available, officials said.

EU leaders shine spotlight on Amazon, Google over tax policy

European leaders will discuss how to combat aggressive tax avoidance by major companies such as Amazon, Google and Apple at a summit on Wednesday, and cut the estimated 1 trillion euros a year the EU loses to tax evasion or avoidance.

The four-hour summit was originally called to discuss energy policy, but investigations in Britain, France and the United States exposing how little tax major international companies have been paying by carefully structuring their European operations has forced the issue to the top of the agenda.

Syria rebels call for reinforcements

Rebels fighting for control of the Syrian town of Qusair called for reinforcements on Wednesday to repel forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad in a civil war which is spreading violence through an already volatile region.

Opposition fighters said air strikes and shelling rocked the small town on the Syrian-Lebanese border that has seen some of the fiercest fighting in months in the two-year-old war that has so far cost at least 80,000 lives.

The fighting has drawn in fighters from Lebanon's Hezbollah movement, the latest sign of outside involvement in the war and evidence, according to Britain, that Iran and its allies in the militant group are lending increasing support to Assad.

IMF's Lagarde to be quizzed in French arbitration case

IMF chief Christine Lagarde will be questioned by a French magistrate on Thursday over her role in a 285-million-euro ($366 million) arbitration payment made to a supporter of former president Nicolas Sarkozy.

Lagarde risks being placed under formal investigation at the hearing for her 2007 decision as Sarkozy's finance minister to use arbitration to settle a long-running court battle between the state and high-profile businessman Bernard Tapie.

Under French law, that step would mean there exists "serious or consistent evidence" pointing to probable implication of a suspect in a crime. It is one step closer to trial but a number of such investigations have been dropped without any trial.

Matthew Davidson and Kevin Sherratt killed sheep with hammer then butchered it in field so they could have a free roast dinner

Matthew Davidson, 28, and Kevin Sherratt, 33, stole the mutilated remains and paraded the animal's head around after beating it to death in a field in Macclesfield, Cheshire. But their drunken prank on a farm in Macclesfield, Cheshire, backfired when they sent photos of what they had done to a friend who alerted police. Davidson, 28, is pictured here showing off the dead animal's head (right) and mutilating the sheep (inset). The pair were caught after Sherratt sent text messages (left) to a friend boasting about what they had done. In one sick jokey text message, he said: 'Lamb sorted. Only Yorkshires needed now'.

Sweden's capital hit by worst riots in years

Hundreds of youths have set fire to cars and attacked police and rescue services in poor immigrant suburbs in three nights of rioting in Stockholm, Sweden's worst disorder in years.

On Tuesday night, a police station in the Jakobsberg area in the northwest of the city was attacked, two schools were damaged and an arts and crafts center was set ablaze, despite a call for calm from Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.

The riots in one of Europe's richest capitals have shocked a country that prides itself on a reputation for social justice, and fuelled a debate about how Sweden is coping with both youth unemployment and an influx of immigrants.

Italy to outline youth jobs plan as government struggles

Italy's new government, already sinking in opinion polls and riven by internal disputes, on Wednesday lays out its plans to address one of the main causes of public anger - soaring unemployment among young people.

But the left-right coalition's room for maneuver even to address this pressing problem is restricted by Europe's second-biggest debt, the longest recession in at least four decades, and a long list of campaign promises.

The coalition between Prime Minister Enrico Letta's center-left Democratic Party (PD) and Silvio Berlusconi's center-right People of Liberty (PDL) was formed only last month but has already run into trouble.

Millions of Italians cannot afford to heat their homes properly or eat meat as their country is racked by recession and soaring unemployment, said a report which found the number of people considered seriously deprived had doubled in the past two years.

The findings from national statistics institute ISTAT underline the scale of the challenge faced by the new coalition government of Enrico Letta, which has vowed to stimulate growth and tackle a youth jobless rate of almost 40 percent.

A recession that has lasted almost two years has taken a heavy toll on ordinary Italians who are increasingly digging into their savings, ISTAT said in its annual report.

European Commission has the Internet in its sight

If an astronaut can garner millions of hits on the web for singing a Bowie song, it seems only apposite that the great bureaucratic leviathan that is the European Commission (EC) should choose to rise from the depths this week to start examining the state of broadcasting in the union.

Broadcasting, in all media, is big business in Europe and broadcasting online is especially growing. Consumer spending on digital video (movies and TV series delivered over the Internet) reached €364.4m in 2011 in Europe within a market of physical and digital videos amounting €9.49bn.

When it comes to investment, of the €34.5bn 2009 programme spend by broadcasters in the EU, approximately €15.6bn was spent on acquiring rights – €5.8bn on sports rights and €9.8bn on film and TV acquisitions. Indeed, BT, in its recent football grab, paid £3bn for the three-season deal.

So why does my heart sink when it comes to an investigation into the future of broadcasting? The short answer is because whenever the EU interferes for the good of the citizens, it is always us, the citizens, who pay.

Tax evasion costs EU states 1tn euros ($1.3tn; £0.85tn) a year, more than was spent on healthcare in 2008.

MEPs are expected to call for a Europe-wide blacklist of tax havens.

Twisters keep returning, but Oklahoma still short on shelters

The people of central Oklahoma know all too well the destructive power of a tornado, but when a big one rolled toward the town of Moore again on Monday, residents had few basements and storm shelters to run to when the alarm sounded, officials said.

Two elementary schools that were hit by the EF-5 tornado - the most powerful category - did not have "safe rooms" where students could shelter from the storm, and no applications for safe rooms had been made, Oklahoma Emergency Management Director Albert Ashwood told reporters.

Seven of the nine children who died in Monday's tornado perished in the Plaza Towers Elementary School, which took a direct hit.

Militants release seven Egyptians kidnapped in Sinai

Seven members of the Egyptian security forces kidnapped by Islamist militants in Sinai last week were released on Wednesday, ending a crisis that has highlighted lawlessness in the desert peninsula bordering Israel.

Security sources said the men were freed following talks mediated by Bedouin tribal leaders. They were handed over to the army in an area south of Rafah, a town straddling the border with the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

The kidnappers had demanded the release of members of an Islamist group convicted last September of carrying out a series of attacks in North Sinai in 2011 that killed seven people.

Around 1200 people were evacuated at an office building in Sydney's CBD after a fire broke out in a restaurant kitchen.

The area around World Square is engulfed with smoke from the blaze, which firefighters believe may have started in an oven in a pizza shop on the ground floor.

An air conditioning duct then sent smoke throughout the entire building.

About 60 firefighters from eight surrounding stations were on the scene at 338 Pitt St.

Pope Francis Exorcism: Vatican Denies Video Footage

The Vatican on Tuesday denied that Pope Francis had performed an exorcism after an Italian religious television channel said footage of the pontiff blessing a boy in a wheelchair showed he had.

"The Holy Father did not intend to perform any exorcism," Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said in a statement, after the claims by TV 2000, which is owned by the Italian bishops' conference.

"As he often does with sick and suffering people who are presented to him, he simply intended to pray for the suffering person," Lombardi said.

The channel quoted exorcists saying there was "no doubt the pope was either reciting a prayer for freeing from the devil or performing an exorcism."

Angry tea partiers rally at IRS headquarters in Washington with stern warnings: 'They're going to have to produce all the documents' on targeting scandal

Conservative activists let it all hang out in a noontime tea party protest outside the Internal Revenue Service headquarters building in Washington, DC on Tuesday. About 70 protesters held signs, chanted slogans, and listened to speakers rail against what they called 'their 'unconstitutional' treatment at the hands of the federal government's tax authorities.

'Big government is the problem,' Tea Party WDC founder Lisa Miller told MailOnline. 'They're going to have to produce all the documents showing who ordered this persecution of tea party groups, when it happened, and how much President Obama knew about it.'

Miller's group organized the rally, one of dozens held around the country, to highlight what she called the federal government's 'harassment and intimidation.' The largest protest, attracting a reported 250 activists, was in Cincinnati, the home of the IRS office that evaluates and approves applications for nonprofit tax-exempt status.

Brood II awakens: The moment thousands of cicadas burst into life from underground in Virginia yards after 17 years

The cicadas invasion of the East Coast has begun, with the insects spotted everywhere from Virginia to Massachusetts.

The infestation, named Brood II by scientists, has not been seen since 1996. Before that it last appeared in 1979.

So far the majority of sightings have been in Virginia and other southern states, where some people have found hundreds in their backyards accompanied by the insects' loud chorus call.

Two dead and five hospitalized after mystery respiratory illness hits south Alabama

Two people have died and five others have been hospitalized by a mysterious respiratory illness in southeast Alabama, state health officials said on Tuesday.

All seven adults had been admitted to hospitals with symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath in recent weeks, said Alabama Department of Public Health spokeswoman Mary McIntyre.

McIntyre said it's unclear what's causing the illness but some of the seven patients also had the flu.

So far, one sample has tested positive for H1N1 influenza A, but it's not clear that that is behind the unusual illnesses.

There's no evidence of other kinds of flu, including the H7N9 strain that has caused illness and death in China, McIntyre said.

New bank chief warns of a 'decade of stagnation' unless European leaders make 'substantial and significant' reforms

Europe faces a 'decade of stagnation' unless leaders make 'sustained and significant' reforms, the incoming governor of the Bank of England has warned.

Mark Carney made no specific reference to the UK in his last scheduled speech before he takes up the post on July 1, but his comments will be scoured for clues to his plans for reviving the economy.

Speaking in Montreal last night, Mr Carney, 48, currently governor of the Bank of Canada, said: ‘Europe remains in recession, with economic activity constrained by fiscal austerity, low confidence and tight credit conditions.

‘Deep challenges persist in its financial system. Without sustained and significant reforms, a decade of stagnation threatens.’

Will the great share boom turn to bust? The FTSE's had a stellar year. But could it collapse just as ordinary investors are pouring in their savings?

Savers put £787million into funds in March. Much of this money is thought to have come from savers suffering low interest rates in cash accounts on the High Street. But while your money has always grown faster in shares than cash over the decades, dark clouds are appearing on the horizon. And inexperienced investors who try to get in on the action when markets are riding high can often be caught out.

Merkel, the Red footsoldier: German chancellor under fire over Communist links as image of her in uniform is released

She denies she was close to the Communist rulers in East Germany, where she grew up.

So this 1972 photo of her in military-style uniform has left German Chancellor Angela Merkel ‘not amused’.

Then called Angela Kasner and aged 17, she is shown happily involved in a civil defence exercise under the gaze of an East German officer.

Drills included first aid and preparing for nuclear attack.

All children had to take part if they wanted to go to university, but Mrs Merkel is also alleged to have been a propaganda secretary for the youth movement, the FDJ.

North Korean Leader Sends 'Special Envoy' to China

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un dispatched a high-profile official and close confidant to travel to China on Wednesday as a special envoy while Beijing is under pressure to rein in its belligerent neighbor.

Choe Ryong Hae, a top Workers' Party official and a vice marshal tasked with supervising the North Korean army, departed on a chartered Air Koryo flight with a political and military delegation. Chinese Ambassador Liu Hongcai was among dignitaries on the tarmac for his departure.

The trip is the highest-profile visit by a North Korean official to China this year, and it takes place as the new leadership in China shows frustration with North Korea and a greater willingness to work with Washington to harry Pyongyang over its nuclear ambitions.
