Report: Monstrous Tornado Kills 2 Dozen Children At Elementary School

At least two dozen children were reportedly killed at an elementary school after a monstrous tornado as much as a mile wide with winds up to 200 mph roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods, setting buildings on fire and landing a direct blow on an elementary school.

The storm laid waste to scores of buildings in Moore, south of the city. Block after block of the community lay in ruins, with heaps of debris piled up where homes used to be. Cars and trucks were left crumpled on the roadside. KFOR-TV reports that up to 24 children were killed at the Tower Plaza Elementary School. The Associated Press reports that several children were pulled out alive from Tower Plaza. Rescue workers lifted children from the rubble before they were passed down a human chain and taken to a triage center set up in the school’s parking lot.

All of the children at the elementary school that took the direct blow, Briarwood Elementary School, have been accounted for, according to KWTV.

KFOR-TV meteorologist Mike Morgan called this “the worst tornado damage in the history of the world.”

Federal Court Slams Obama's Use of Recess Appointment Power as Opposition to Presidential Tyranny Grows

It’s been a bad week for Barack Obama, and things just got worse. On top of the growing scandals over the I.R.S. targeting conservative groups and the Justice Department snooping on journalists, the president has just received a major constitutional reprimand from the federal courts over his dubious exercise of executive power.

According to the Constitution, the president must seek the “advice and consent” of the Senate when filling certain government positions. The president may only bypass this confirmation requirement in those rare cases where a temporary appointment is needed to "fill up all vacancies that may happen during the recess of the Senate." This is known as the president’s recess appointment power.

In a decision handed down Thursday morning, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit ruled that Obama violated the Constitution by making a recess appointment to the National Labor Relations Board when the Senate was not actually in recess, but was instead holding pro forma sessions for the precise purpose of denying him the lawful ability to make a recess appointment. In an unprecedented move in January 2012, Obama simply ignored this legal impediment and made four purported recess appointments anyway, including the addition of three members to the NLRB.

2 mile wide tornado flattens parts of Oklahoma

Neighbourhoods are flattened and buildings are on fire after a mile-wide tornado moved through the Oklahoma City area of the United States.

Police say an elementary school took a direct hit from the tornado.

Television footage on Monday afternoon showed homes and buildings that had been reduced to rubble in Moore, Oklahoma, south of Oklahoma City.

Footage also showed vehicles littering roadways south and southwest of Oklahoma City.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The suburb of Moore was hit hard by a tornado in 1999. The storm had the highest winds ever recorded near the earth's surface.

Several tornadoes have ravaged parts of the central United States, reducing portions of a mobile home park to rubble and killing two elderly men.

The storms concentrated damage in Wichita, Kansas and Oklahoma. The National Weather Service was forecasting more of the same for the area - including Oklahoma City and Tulsa - on Monday afternoon and evening, warning of the possibility of tornadoes and baseball-sized hail.

The worst of Sunday's damage appeared to be at a mobile home park located near Shawnee among gently rolling hills, southeast of Oklahoma City.

"It took a dead hit," resident James Hoke said.

Jamel: Little welcome for strangers in Germany's neo-Nazi village

Rottweilers bark incessantly, a woman shrieks an obscenity, and heavyset men warn outsiders to "Get back to the West!". Jeevan Vasagar and Alastair Good explore Jamel - the village that, for some, is the tip of the iceberg.

Next to a mural showing an idealised Aryan family, Gothic script declares that the village in eastern Germany is "free, social, national." The signpost next to it once pointed the way to Hitler's birthplace, 530 miles away in Austria, until a court order forced villagers to take it down.

The echoes of the Third Reich are quite deliberate. In Jamel, a tiny collection of red brick farmhouses fringed by forest, dozens of villagers describe themselves as Nazis and a majority turns out to vote for the far Right.

This is a place with little welcome for strangers. Rottweilers bark incessantly. A shaven-headed man shouts his own warning while a woman shrieks an obscenity from her window.

Jamel is for some the tip of the iceberg; an indication of how the far Right in Germany is open and active, especially in areas of former East Germany where jobs are scarce.

This month in Munich, the opening stages of a shocking trial have given further cause for introspection in a country which is being forced to confront the violent racism which pervades parts of its society.

Jose Matada: Falls dead from sky over London after hiding in airplane landing gear on flight from Angola; died on his 26th birthday with just one pound sterling in his pocket

This is like one of those dramatic, attention-grabbing opening sequences on CSI that are designed to make you sit up and say, “What?!?” Except it’s grimly real, and we’re spared having to look at David Caruso and his infernal sunglasses.

The body of a man fell from the sky onto a suburban street in a community outside of London, England, in September. Now, investigators have concluded that he was a stowaway who had hidden in the landing gear of an airplane flying from Angola to London. He fell to earth when the landing gear was readied on approach to Heathrow, where it landed three minutes later.

There were few clues about the identity of the stowaway, who was either unconscious or already dead from hypothermia and oxygen deprivation when he fell from the plane. According to The Guardian, authorities traced the activity on the SIM card in his pocket and spoke to a woman with whom the victim had exchanged several text messages. She was able to identify him based on a distinctive tattoo on his left arm.

Jose Matada, who went by the name Youssoup, died on his 26th birthday, with a single British pound and a bit of Botswanan currency in his pocket. Although the flight he stowed away on originated in the capital of Angola, it is believed that Matada may have been from Mozambique, but officials have been unable to confirm this or locate any of his relatives.

In several messages to a former employer who now resides in Switzerland, Matada had spoken of intending to start a new life in Europe, but revealed nothing about his desperate plans to reach his final destination by stowing away on an intercontinental aircraft.

CHIEF VETS TO DISCUSS LYSSAVIRUS DEATH

Chief vets from all states will hold a teleconference on Tuesday to discuss the death of a horse in Queensland from the deadly Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV).

Biosecurity Queensland says as the disease has never been seen in horses before, the group will draw up guidelines and advice on management practices.

Chief Biosecurity Officer Jim Thompson says the guidelines will include quarantine restrictions for properties.

Dr Thompson says other animals, including horses, are on the Southern Darling Downs property where the horse died last week.

Australia: Killer virus alert for travellers

Australians travelling to the Middle East could need a health check when they return if infections caused by a SARS-like virus continue to rise, a WA disease expert warns.

Curtin University professor of health science Charles Watson said a new viral agent from the same family of viruses that caused an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome 10 years ago had emerged in the Middle East a few months ago and recently spread to Europe.

By this week, 41 cases of the coronavirus, known as London1 novel CoV 2012, had been reported and half the patients had died.

France must reform or face punitive measures: EU's Oettinger

France should only be granted more time from the European Commission to cut its deficit if it also introduces reform measures, EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger was quoted saying on Monday.

Oettinger, a former state premier in Germany and a respected leader in Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU), joined a chorus of senior German officials and CDU figures to issue warnings against allowing France to backslide on its austerity commitments.

His warnings followed similar comments from Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann and deputy parliamentary floor leader Michael Meister, who said last week France and Italy need to worker harder and faster to resolve their structural problems.

Lahore Inferno: Losing the battle with fire

A man wearing traditional white Pakistani clothes disappeared from the window back into the burning building. A minute later, a different man wearing black emerged from inside but it looked like someone was holding his lifeless body. The body was slowly pushed over the edge of the window and then released. Twenty seconds later the man in white came out again. He sat calmly for a few seconds in the open window with his back turned outwards and then just fell.

And that was it; both men were dead in less than a minute. After several long hours of fighting a raging fire (or were they short hours? Time gets twisted in extreme situations like this), this part of the story ended in the way I had feared from the beginning – the worst possible way. I shot pictures of people falling from the building to their deaths, of others crying on the ground, of desperate and helpless rescue workers.

More severe storms, tornadoes expected across central U.S.

The central United States braced for another round of violent weather on Monday after high winds, hail, and tornadoes struck the region over the weekend, killing one man and injuring more than 20 people.

Severe storms were expected to pummel several states, with northwest Arkansas, far southeast Kansas, southern Missouri, most of Oklahoma and northern Texas facing the greatest risk, according to the National Weather Service.

"A very moist atmosphere will become quite unstable again today," the weather service said. "This combined with strong favorable winds aloft will result in a risk of a few strong tornadoes, very large hail and damaging winds in the most intense storms."

Dagestan bombs kill 4, 2 dead in shootout near Moscow

Two car bombs killed at least four people and wounded dozens of others on Monday in one of the bloodiest attacks this year in Dagestan, a turbulent province in Russia's North Caucasus region where armed groups are waging an Islamist insurgency.

Car bombs, suicide bombings and firefights are common in Dagestan, at the center of an insurgency rooted in two post-Soviet wars against separatist rebels in neighboring Chechnya.

Such attacks are rare in other parts of Russia, but in a separate incident in a suburb of Moscow on Monday, security forces killed two suspected militants alleged to have been plotting an attack in the capital and arrested a third suspect after a gunbattle.

H7N9 found in poultry sample in S China

A poultry sample in south China has tested positive for H7N9 virus, the country's agriculture authority said on Monday.

The avian flu virus, which has so far led to the deaths of 36 people nationwide, was detected in a sample of chicken that came from a market in the city of Zengcheng in Guangdong Province.

After completing gene sequence analysis, the national avian flu reference laboratory concluded that the strain of H7N9 found in the sample was highly cogeneric with that found in a pigeon sample tested on April 4.

Israel: Five Dead After Gunfight In Bank

A gunman has shot dead four people in a bank in Israel after he was refused an overdraft and cash from an automatic teller machine.

The man stormed into the Bank Hapoalim branch in the southern city of Be'er Sheva, killing four people in a gunfight and taking a hostage before killing himself.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the shootings happened inside the bank, which was cordoned off with a large number of police.

A fish and chip shop owner has become only the second man to be jailed under a law designed to catch sex tourists.

David Graham, 47, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to sexual activity with a boy of 14 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in April 2006.

He was arrested in France last year after spending six years on the run.

Graham, who is originally from Bournemouth, Dorset, was jailed for 21 months and ordered to pay £2,500 costs.

Abu Qatada: Terror Suspect Loses Bail Appeal

Radical cleric Abu Qatada has been refused bail after a judge said significant jihadist material was found on a computer memory stick.

The Special Immigration Appeals Commission refused the application from the terror suspect, who was detained in Belmarsh prison in March after allegedly breaching a bail condition which prevents him from turning mobile phones on in his house.

Qatada, who recently indicated he was willing to leave the UK voluntarily after years fighting deportation, must remain in custody after immigration judge Mr Justice Irwin's ruling.

The judge said: "We regard these breaches as serious. It was the appellant's obligation to understand the conditions of bail and ensure they were adhered to.

Obama: The Impeachment Option

Representative Jason Chaffetz, a Utah Republican, says President Barack Obama may face impeachment over his administration’s response to the Benghazi attack.

“They purposefully and willfully misled the American people, and that’s unacceptable,” Chaffetz tells me. “It’s part of a pattern of deception.”

Behind the scenes, he says, House Republicans are frustrated by the White House’s evasiveness, and the calls for impeachment will likely increase.

Chaffetz acknowledges that House speaker John Boehner is wary of moving too swiftly against the president, but the brash, 46-year-old conservative is tired of waiting for answers. He’s ready to issue subpoenas and schedule more hearings.

His chief concern is that the White House, which he says is staffed by “self-preservationists,” seems to be hiding documents related to the attack and the president’s decisions, in order to protect the administration from scrutiny.

“They’ve released 100 emails, but there are thousands of documents that we still need to see,” he says. “The truth gets colder as time goes on, so we need to stay vigilant.”

Israel world’s largest exporter of drones, continues to spread peace and kindness across region and world

Israel is the world’s largest exporter of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) in terms of volume, variety of systems and countries exported to, according to a study released Monday.

Drone exports have amounted to some $4.6 billion over the last eight years and make up nearly 10 percent of Israel’s total defense exports, international consulting firm Frost & Sullivan said in a statement. The firm projects that UAV exports will continue to grow by some 5%-10% per year until at least 2020.

The number of tweets with hateful sentiments in a certain area is expressed in a range of colours from light blue to bright red, a style known as a heat map. In this case, the students have called it a "hate map."

Students at Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif., incorporated data from 150,000 tweets, focusing on 10 hateful words, as part of a larger project called "Geography of Hate."

The students read each tweet individually to make sure the content was indeed an expression of hatred, and not some other use of the key words investigated.

Besides words commonly used as insults against minorities and homosexuals, the researchers included the word "cripple" when used as an invective.

The data was then normalized for population density, meaning the map isn't just showing where the most people are, but where the most hateful tweets are coming from per capita.

China 'Has Secret Plan to Replace N.Korean Leader'

China is secretly pursuing plans to install North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's older brother Kim Jong-nam at the head of the renegade country in case the regime collapses, Germany’s Deutsche Welle reported Thursday.

Under the headline "Is China Seeking Regime Change in North Korea," Deutsche Welle cited intelligence sources as saying Beijing "has a contingency plan in place for when Kim Jong-un's control over the country crumbles." It is "quietly encouraging regime change and is grooming Kim's brother, Kim Jong-nam to take over his role."

Kim Jong-nam's relative obscurity at home is a problem. "Even residents of Pyongyang know very little" about him, according to the report.

The broadcaster said North Korea's sudden throttling back of its aggressive rhetoric and provocations has led to suggestions that "Pyongyang has realized it has pushed its only ally in the region to the brink of severing its friendship."
