Will Israel destroy Russian missiles? West assumes Israel will be forced to launch additional attacks on Hezbollah-bound arms convoys

The main reason for the heightened tensions on the northern front is Iran and Syria's interest to intensify and hasten the arming of Hezbollah. Tehran apparently believes the West's patience is running out quickly and that by the end of the first half of 2013, or by the end of the year, Washington or Jerusalem – or both – will decide on a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities.

The Iranians want to deter Israel and the Western nations from making such a decision by threats of mass casualties and devastation in the Israeli home front. Tehran plans to realize this threat with the use of Hezbollah and Syria's huge missile and rocket arsenal. Particularly important for the Iranians is Hezbollah's arsenal, which is protected from a ground invasion and is deployed in the heart of a supportive population in south Lebanon.

While Syria has a far larger amount of rockets and missiles, it is difficult to gauge how many of them will actually work when Iran will need them most. Therefore, Iran is looking to beef up Hezbollah's arsenal with as many accurate and devastating advanced long-term rockets as possible - rockets such as the Fateh-110, which are capable of reaching the Tel Aviv metropolitan area and even further south.

Report: Assad preparing missile strike against Tel Aviv in case attacked again

Syria is making preparations to strike Tel Aviv in case Israel launches another attack on its territory, The Sunday Times reported on Sunday.

The Syrian army has begun deploying advanced surface-to-surface missiles, the report said, adding that it has received orders to strike central Israel in case additional attacks against Syria are carried out.

The Sunday Times said that the information was obtained by reconnaissance satellites that were tracking the Syrian forces. According to the report, Syria was deploying advanced Tishreen missiles which are capable of carrying a holf-ton warhead.

‘There is a culture of intimidation throughout the Obama administration’

Republican Senators Rand Paul, Mitch McConnell and Rob Portman continued Sunday to press the Obama administration on the Internal Revenue Service scandal that's engulfed the White House.

On CNN's "State of the Union," Paul told Candy Crowley he heard about a "written policy" that encouraged IRS officials to target "those who are critical of the president."

"And when that comes forward, we need to know who wrote the policy and who approved the policy," Paul said.

The Kentucky senator seemed to backtrack when pressed about the existence of yet another controversial document.

Tunisian Islamist protester killed in clash with police

One protester died and several were injured when Tunisian Islamists defied a ban on their demonstration and clashed with police on Sunday.

The 27-year-old man was killed in the violence in the capital Tunis which continued into the evening, the state news agency said. A Reuters witness saw several others injured at the protest in support of the Islamist Ansar al-Sharia group.

In the central city of Kairouan, where tens of thousands of members of Ansar al-Sharia had been due to attend the main rally, protesters threw stones at police, who fired teargas in response.

UKIP poll surge as one in five voters say they'd back Farage amid anger over Europe

Support for the UK Independence Party has grown with two opinion polls giving the party record levels of support.

An Opinium poll put Nigel Farage's party on 20 per cent, while a ComRes survey put them on 19 per cent.

The ComRes poll for the Sunday Mirror and Independent on Sunday found support for Nigel Farage's party was up four per cent since the last survey a month ago, with Labour down three points to 35 per cent, the Conservatives down one to 29 per cent and the Liberal Democrats were unchanged on eight per cent.

Millionaires in France 'paid more than 100% of their annual income in tax'

Taxes on the rich imposed by Socialist president Francois Hollande meant more than 8,000 French households had tax bills that exceeded their income last year.

It is thought the exceptionally high level of taxation was due to a one-off levy last year on the previous year's incomes for households with assets of more than 1.3million euros (£1.1million).

It comes after Mr Hollande implemented a temporary 75 per cent tax on earnings over 1million euros (£845,000), aimed at offsetting the cost of a rebate scheme imposed by his right-wing predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy, which capped overall taxation at 50 per cent of personal total income.

North Korea fired a short-range missile into the Sea of Japan on Sunday, according to South Korea's semiofficial news agency Yonhap, citing a South Korean military official.

On Saturday, North Korea launched three short-range guided missiles into the sea, also known as the East Sea, off the Korean Peninsula's east coast, Yonhap reported.

The missiles on Saturday were fired in a northeasterly direction, away from South Korean waters, the ministry said.

Jaime Clutter 'drowned her two children and herself in icy creek because she believed family was being haunted by demons' - but her husband insists she didn't do it

Police say a woman found drowned in a southern Indiana creek with her son and daughter had killed the children and believed her family was being stalked by 'demonic presences.'

The body of 35-year-old Jaime Clutter was found in March, along with the bodies of her 10-year-old son, Brandon, and 6-month-old daughter, Katelyn.

The naked bodies were recovered in a park in New Albany, less than a mile from where the family.

Police hunt bank robber caught on camera putting his finger to his lips to quieten hysterical teller after slipping her a note saying he would kill customers

Security camera footage captures the chilling moment a bank robber held his finger to his lips to try to silence a terrified bank teller.

In a note handed to the Bank of America employee in New York City, the well-dressed thief threatened to kill everyone unless the clerk handed over the money.

His plan backfired however, when the woman who is in her 20s, started yelling Oh, my God!' as she read the note that was scrawled in black marker pen.

As the worker screamed, the robber held his finger up to his lips, telling her: 'Shhhh.'

Obama administration knew IRS was harassing tea party groups from JUNE 2012

Obama administration officials were made aware in June 2012 about an investigation into complaints from conservative tea party groups that they were being harassed, and they knew the probe was ongoing at the height of the presidential race, a Treasury inspector general revealed Friday.

J. Russell George, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration, testified alongside ousted IRS head Steven Miller, who did little to subdue Republican outrage during hours of intense congressional questioning.

Both defiant and apologetic, Miller acknowledged agency mistakes in targeting tea party groups for special scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status, but he insisted that agents broke no laws and that there was no effort to cover up their actions.

Flooding hits north east as one month's rainfall of nearly TWO INCHES falls in just 24 hours... and there's no sign of warmer weather to come

The elusive spring weather is still showing no signs of appearing in Britain, with the north of the country hit by torrential rain and flooding today.

Heavy downpours turned a busy dual carriageway in Newcastle into a virtual river this morning, while flooding in Durham - which has seen almost a month's worth of rainfall in the space of 24 hours - left motorists stranded on waterlogged rural roads.

Flood alerts are in place across the north east, and while forecasters are predicting drier days in the week ahead, Britons keeping their fingers crossed for warmer weather are likely to be disappointed.

Marine Le Pen is seriously injured after fracturing her spine in swimming pool fall

Far-right politician Marine Le Pen has fractured her spine after falling into an empty swimming pool in France, it emerged tonight.

News of the 44-year-old's 'rather serious' accident will send shockwaves around nationalist groups, not just in France but across Europe.

Le Pen, who is leader of the National Front (FN), is one of the most high-profile right-wing politicians on the continent, with her hardline anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim agenda regularly winning a huge number of votes at elections.

Did David Cameron use 'swivel-eyed loons' jibe to deride Euro rebels too? New claims as PM backs Tory chairman accused using the insult

David Cameron has been dragged deeper into the 'swivel-eyed loon' row engulfing his party – after it was claimed that he used the insult himself to deride Euro rebels.

Tory Chairman Lord Feldman, a key member of the Prime Minister's inner circle, was yesterday forced to deny he had used the term against Conservative grassroots supporters, saying the claims were 'completely untrue'.

Mr Cameron put his reputation on the line by backing his Oxford University pal and tennis partner. But The Mail on Sunday can disclose that the Prime Minister was accused of using the same 'swivel-eyed' jibe last year.

N. Korea test-fires another short-range missile, 4th in two days

North Korea on Sunday test-fired a short-range missile off its east coast, its fourth in two days, despite pleas from South Korea and the UN chief to halt the launches at a time of high tensions.

The guided missile was fired into the East Sea (Sea of Japan) on Sunday afternoon, a defence ministry spokesman told AFP without elaborating.

On Saturday the North fired three short-range missiles off its east coast, apparently as part of a military drill.

The North's short-range missile launches are not unusual but come at a time of heightened alert on the peninsula, following Pyongyang's February nuclear test which sparked tougher UN sanctions.

Angered by the sanctions and by a joint US-South Korean military exercise, the North for weeks threatened nuclear or conventional attacks on Seoul and Washington.

Ban Ki-moon urges North Korea to end missile tests

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on North Korea to refrain from carrying out any further missile tests.

His comments came a day after Pyongyang test-fired three short-range missiles from its east coast.

Speaking in Russia, Mr Ban called on North Korea to lower the tensions in the region and "resume dialogue" over its nuclear programme.

Tensions were high across the region earlier this year between North Korea and its neighbours and the US.

'Here to Stay', Syrian President Assad's defiant message

President Bashar al-Assad has said he will not step down, as the conflict in Syria enters its third year. In an interview with Argentinian newspaper Clarin, he said ‘to resign would be to flee’.

He also said US and Russian attempts at peace talks were doomed to failure, claiming that rebel groups were too fractured to enable any kind of ceasefire or summit.

Assad blamed neighbouring states for supporting the insurgency, saying that they want to fuel the violence rather than stop it.

Radioactive leak found at Palisades Nuclear Power Plant

Investigators have discovered a half-inch long crack around a nozzle on one of the tanks of the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant, and have attributed the crack to the water leakage that spilled radioactive water into Lake Michigan on May 5.

The plant, which is located on the shore of the great lake and operated by Entergy, was shut down after the water tank exceeded its site threshold and leaked. Authorities say the crack led to about 79 gallons of “slightly radioactive water” spilling from the Palisades plant into the lake, WOOD-TV reports.

The leak came from a 300,000-gallon injection and refueling tank, which floods and cools the nuclear reactor with borated water during refueling outages. It also removes heat from the reactor when there is a loss of coolant by sourcing the safety injection system.

U.S. pointing a gun at democracy

Our democracy is endangered. Not by the Russians, North Korea, the Iran regime, or even terrorists. To quote Pogo: "We have met the enemy and he is us."

Inside the beltway, the fingers point and the media tuts and struts in glee, and we, the American public, respond by becoming more rigid and divided ourselves. No more "truth springing from argument amongst friends," as David Hume said. A recent nonpartisan Pew Research Poll finds our knee-jerk partisanship has increased dramatically.

This road we're on will lead us step-by-step to an extreme: either an autocratic government that functions, or a dysfunctional anarchy. The petty squabbles, bilge in the name of party or principle, will dissolve our self-government.

Sectarian violence erupts anew in Iraq

At least 15 people were killed Saturday in Baghdad and Anbar provinces, police said, in what appeared to be a continuation of sectarian violence.

Another 14 people, six of them police officers, most of whom are Shia, were kidnapped Saturday in Anbar province, police said.

The incidents occurred a day after dozens of people were killed when bombs struck as worshipers were leaving a Sunni mosque and attending a funeral.

At least 40 people were killed and 46 others wounded Friday in the two roadside explosions outside a Sunni mosque in the city of Baquba, police and health officials told CNN.

New York slaying considered hate crime

Police are investigating the slaying of a 32-year-old man in the Greenwich Village neighborhood early Saturday as a hate crime because the gunman made multiple anti-gay comments, they said.

It is the third violent attack in two weeks believed to be motivated by anti-gay bias, police said.

The suspect's anti-gay remarks were noted before the shooting took place, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. The man was seen urinating on the street outside a bar before going inside and making anti-gay comments to the bartender and brandishing a silver handgun.

5 things to know about dangerous, SARS-like virus

A new virus in the same family as SARS -- found for the first time in humans in recent months -- has infected 40 people, most of them in the Middle East.

Half of those infected have died, according to the World Health Organization. Earlier this week, the WHO reported two health care workers in Saudi Arabia had been sickened while treating patients.

Cases of the virus, called the novel coronavirus or nCoV, have also been reported in European countries, most recently France but also Germany and the United Kingdom.

H7N9 case has drug- and non-resistant strains

he only H7N9 patient so far in Taiwan was carrying two strains of the same virus, with one being drug resistant and the other not, making it tricky to treat to him, doctors said.

Huang Li-min, a doctor from National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH), explained that it was possible the avian flu virus was not drug resistant when the patient was first infected, but mutated later to become resistant to Tamiflu.

With Tamiflu failing, NTUH later switched to another intravenous drug, Huang said. Because of the presence of the two strains simultaneously, it was difficult for doctors to determine how much the virus' drug resistance had undermined the therapy.

Chou Chi-hao, deputy director-general of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), said it is natural for viruses to mutate, saying the H1N1 flu strain mutated after infecting human beings.

H7N9 more likely to transmit among humans than other bird flu

A China, World Health Organization (WHO) joint report said the H7N9 bird flu virus has a higher potential for human-to-human transmission than any other known bird flu virus.

The report, compiled after the WHO's week-long field assessment of the influenza, was publicized by China's National Health and Family Planning Commission on Saturday.

It said, the H7N9 virus, compared with other bird flu virus, has infected more in a shorter time, and some H7N9 virus have shown genetic alterations which means they have adapted to be more contagious than other avian influenza virus.

Besides, the WHO offered the Chinese government several suggestions, including staying alert despite the virus' seasonal weakening during the summer, as the virus poses grave hazards and a lot of its basic information are still not known.

The report admitted there are still uncertainties surrounding this fresh strain of virus, asserting that exposure to live poultry is a major risk factor.

THE quarantine division within the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) is on alert in the wake of a bird disease outbreak in neighbouring Papua New Guinea.

Called Newcastle disease, it was found and declared in Sandaun province, West Sepik, in the Papua New Guinea-Indonesian border. Newcastle Disease (ND) is said to be a highly contagious disease of poultry and wild birds, which has the potential to cause high numbers of deaths in birds.

The ministry's permanent secretary has issued a directive to all port of entry and border control quarantine officers along the PNG-SI border including the Honiara international airport, seaports and mail exchange services to inform and educate communities and business operators about the threats of the disease.

"Be vigilant and alert for goods imported from PNG and to take appropriate and necessary actions for products that may pose threats to Solomon Islands to prevent any likely incursion."
