Swine flu transmitted to seals in California

Swine flu has been transmitted to elephant seals living off the coast of California.

The H1N1 strain is the same one that caused a worldwide pandemic in 2009. It is the first time the flu strain has been confirmed in a marine mammal.

"We thought we might find influenza viruses, which have been found before in marine mammals, but we did not expect to find pandemic H1N1," said Dr Tracey Goldstein, who led the US team that made the discovery. "This shows influenza viruses can move among species."

Nasal swabs identified the flu infection in two elephant seals living off the Californian coast. An immune reaction to the virus in another 28 elephant seals indicated more widespread exposure.

Sun's Intensity Sparks Up Powerful Flares and there is More to Come

The Sun has been unleashing strong solar flares this week and more can be expected in the coming days.

Four were spotted this week, marking the most intense activity yet this year and causing limited interruptions to high-frequency radio communications.

One of them was classified as an X3.2 flare, with X-class flares being the most intense type, US space agency Nasa said.

David Hernandez Arrested: Mum Rams Suspect's Car After Girl Abducted

A mother whose daughter was being abducted helped police catch the suspect by chasing him down and crashing her vehicle into his car.

The four-year-old girl was playing in the front garden of an apartment complex in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Wednesday when a group of teenagers saw a man forcing her into his car.

They alerted the girl's mother who got into her own car and gave chase - unaware that the suspect had pushed her daughter out of his car before fleeing the scene.

Texas Plant Blast Probe Findings Inconclusive

Investigations into a deadly blast at a Texas fertiliser plant have failed to identify a cause.

State Fire Marshal Chris Connealy said officials were still classifying the cause of the fire that sparked the deadly explosion as undetermined - but have not ruled out criminal activity.

The April 17 blast killed 15 people, injured 200 and levelled part of the town of West, which has a population of around 2,800.

South African Police Accused Of Using Torture

One of South Africa's leading anti-apartheid stalwarts has lambasted his country's police force after a string of accusations about their brutal methods - including torture.

Ronnie Kasrils, who served in the first democratically-elected South African Government, told Sky News: "This is not what we fought for. The Nelson Mandela I know would have been outraged at the police brutality."

The criticism from one of the leading lights of the anti-apartheid era will be keenly felt at a time when the country is still immersed in the inquiry into what went wrong at Marikana last August, when 34 striking miners were shot dead by police.

An Australian politician has been attacked by a kangaroo as he went for a morning jog.

Shane Rattenbury said he was out running in a suburb of the capital Canberra when he suddenly came up against an eastern grey kangaroo grazing on a front lawn.

"We both got a nasty fright, and of course when kangaroos are startled, they lash out," the 41-year-old said.

Nigel Farage barricaded in pub as anti-UKIP protesters hold demo

Ukip leader Nigel Farage was barricaded in a pub today as dozens of protesters interrupted his campaigning.

He had called a press conference on Edinburgh's Royal Mile to promote Ukip's candidate in an upcoming by-election.

However, protesters entered the pub - the Canons Gait just yards from the Scottish Parliament - and surrounded the meeting.

Staff were forced to clear the pub and the protest spilled outside obstructing Mr Farage's exit.

The Ukip leader attempted to make an escape by taxi but protesters blocked its path.

Police eventually escorted Mr Farage back into the pub and barricaded the doors against protesters.

A police bomb squad detonated 17 homemade explosive devices found in an apartment yesterday after a routine traffic stop revealed a potentially dangerous liquid in a man's car, authorities said.

Robert Wilson, 29, was taken into custody and booked on felony possession of a destructive device, police Sgt Rudy Lopez said.

IRS letters harassing conservative groups came from DC headquarters and from California offices and NOT Cincinnati , documents reveal

Letters from the IRS to tea party-related organizations in Oklahoma City and Albuquerque, New Mexico show that IRS headquarters in Washington, D.C., and two satellite offices in California, were directly involved with sending harassing letters to conservative organizations that sought tax-exempt status.

The IRS has acknowledged only the involvement of its Exempt Organizations office in Cincinnati, Ohio, which typically makes most decisions about granting or denying tax-exempt status to non-profit organizations.

And Wednesday afternoon, CNN cited a congressional source in reporting that the acting IRS Commissioner – whom President Obama fired later in the day – had identified two 'rogue' employees, both in Cincinnati, whom he thought were responsible for targeting right-wing organizations with tactics that were not applied to left-wing or non-political groups.

Obama refuses to apologize for secretly seizing AP phone records but admits 'lessons have been learned' over Benghazi deaths

President Barack Obama dodged questions Thursday about the IRS's targeting of conservative groups, shifted responsibility for the Benghazi attack to Congress, and said 'I offer no apologies' for the Department of Justice's secret seizure of reporter's phone records in search of a classified intelligence leak.

In a rain-soaked and visibly rose-free Rose Garden press conference originally intended to be a victory lap for the United States' relationship with Turkey, Obama stood alongside Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan and fielded questions which quickly shifted to the trio of scandals that face his administration.

Beginning in 2010, Obama's IRS targeted a list of approximately 300 tea party-related and other conservative groups for aggressive scrutiny following their applications for tax-exempt status. His Department of Justice secretly spied on the Associated Press's phone records in an attempt to trace a national security leak.

Public sector pay gravy train gets rolling again: Pay freeze for private firms continues as state wages rise

Workers in the private sector have seen no increase in pay in the last year, new figures show.

A headline 0.4 per cent rise in total has been entirely fuelled by increases for public sector staff, the Office for National Statistics said.

Even these modest rises in pay have been hugely outstripped by increases in the cost of living, leaving millions worse off in real terms.

Immigrants now make up 13% of the British population as it’s revealed more Europeans arrived in the UK in the past decade than in the previous 50 years

At least 7.5million immigrants now live in Britain, making up 13 per cent of the total population, it was revealed today.

New data from the 2011 Census shows that 3.8million came to the UK's shores in the previous ten years, doubling the number who were already living here.

A surge from Europe also meant that more people came from the continent in the decade to 2011 than the 50 years before then put together.

A total of 1.54million Europeans entered Britain in that time, compared to the 1.2million between 1961 and 2000. The largest numbers came between 2004 and 2009, when Poland joined the EU.

Germany tells France and Italy to 'just work harder' to solve economic woes

Italy and France need to work 'harder and faster' to resolve their structural problems, a senior ally of German chancellor Angela Merkel said today.

Michael Meister, a key figure in Merkel's Christian Democrats, said: 'Italy and France have structural problems to resolve and not economic problems.
'They can't wait any longer. More time won't relieve the problem. It'll only make it worse.'

However, French president Francois Hollande warned that the EU's austerity policy was threatening the continent's stability and could even see Europe 'wiped out from the world map'.

Why Turkey is U.S. key to Syria crisis

Almost every American ally in the Middle East is desperately calling out for help, and we are ignoring them. Turkey, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain -- and behind closed doors, even Egypt -- want American involvement in Syria to stop the blood bath.

But the twin ghosts of Iraq and Afghanistan seem to have paralyzed America in the Arab world.

On Thursday, Turkey's prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will visit President Barack Obama in Washington. This is an ideal opportunity to throw American weight behind greater Turkish leadership in resolving the Syrian conflict -- and declare as much from the White House. The conflict is spreading fast outside of Syria, and unless regional powers such as Turkey, Israel and Saudi Arabia are empowered to act militarily, and swiftly, many more lives will be lost and the Middle East further destabilized.

Bulgaria's leading party demands vote rerun after 'violation'

Bulgaria's GERB party is demanding a rerun of Sunday's election, blaming illegal campaigning for its failure to win more support and prolonging a political vacuum that would further undermine the European Union's poorest economy.

Center-right GERB, which won 97 of 240 parliamentary seats and cannot form a majority coalition, was swept from office in February by street protests over living standards, corruption and organized crime.

Leader Boiko Borisov said on Thursday he will propose a minority government, even though it will not be voted in by parliament, if the constitutional court has not ruled on GERB's complaint before the new assembly is convened.

France's Hollande urges euro zone government, common debt

French President Francois Hollande called on Thursday for an economic government in the euro zone that would have its own budget, the right to issue debt, a harmonized tax system and a full-time president.

Speaking at a news conference marking his first year in office, a day after economic data showed France had slipped back into recession, the Socialist leader said he sought to create a full political European Union within two years.

His proposals seemed likely to encounter stiff resistance from Germany, Europe's leading power, which opposes mutualising debt among European states and is reluctant to give the euro zone its own secretariat or create new divisions in the EU, of which 10 countries are not in the 17-nation single currency.

Mid-sized Italian banks getting squeezed

A deepening recession and banking stress tests could find Italy's mid-sized lenders short of billions of euros, putting the state on the hook for a new wave of cash calls and triggering an overhaul of how they do business.

Even ahead of the European stress tests, expected to take place when or shortly before the European Central Bank (ECB) takes over direct supervision of euro zone banks next year, Italy's smaller banks are under pressure to boost their balance sheets after a Bank of Italy audit of problematic loans and to meet stricter Basel 3 capital rules. Bad loans in Italy have been climbing at an annual rate of 20 percent in recent months.

In the port city of Genoa, birthplace of modern banking in the 15th century, regional market leader Carige is raising 800 million euros ($1 billion), equivalent to two thirds of its market value, by selling assets to boost its capital.

Army Sergeant John Russell: life in prison for Iraq killings

A military judge ruled on Thursday that a U.S. soldier is to spend the rest of his life in prison without parole for killing five fellow servicemen in a 2009 overseas shooting spree, one of the worst cases of soldier-on-soldier violence in the Iraq war.

In a deal that spared him the death penalty, U.S. Army Sergeant John Russell pleaded guilty last month to killing two medical staff officers and three soldiers at Camp Liberty, a combat stress clinic in Baghdad.

Data raises questions about strength of U.S. economy

The U.S. economy showed worrisome signs as jobless claims rose sharply last week while ground-breaking at home construction sites tumbled in April and a gauge of underlying inflation pointed to weak demand.

The data could fuel fears over the impact of a government austerity drive that began in January, and could raise pressure on the Federal Reserve to keep its money printing press running on overdrive as the central bank buys bonds to support the economy.

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits climbed last week at the fastest pace in six months, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits jumped by 32,000 to 360,000. That was the biggest jump since November and confounded analysts' expectations for a more modest increase.

Cameron tells EU rebels to back referendum law

Prime Minister David Cameron ordered rebellious lawmakers on Thursday to back his plan for a law guaranteeing a vote on Britain's European Union membership as he sought shore up his party, his leadership and the coalition.

Conservative rebels have been pushing him to take a hard line on Europe, resurrecting party splits that contributed to the downfall of former prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major in the 1990s. An election is due in 2015.

Cameron's promise in January to claw back powers from the EU and then put Britain's membership of the bloc to a vote by 2017 failed to silence eurosceptics and halt the rise of the anti-EU UK Independence Party.

Canada not planning H7N9 bird flu vaccine studies; will watch US results: PHAC

Canada currently has no plans to ask its pandemic flu vaccine manufacturers to make trial batches of vaccine to protect against the new H7N9 bird flu, senior officials of the Public Health Agency of Canada have revealed.

While the U.S. government has said it will ask several of flu vaccine manufacturers to start growing up batches of serum against the new virus this summer, Canada will watch, wait and learn from the work the U.S. does, the officials said in an interview with The Canadian Press.

Death toll rises to 36 in H7N9 outbreak

May 15, 2013 (CIDRAP News) – The first patient in China's Hunan province with confirmed H7N9 influenza has died, lifting the outbreak's fatality count to 36, according to official and media reports today.

The patient is a 64-year-old woman who died yesterday morning at a hospital in Shaoyang, about 20 days after her illness was detected, according to a report from Xinhua, China's state news agency. The source of the information is the Hunan Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission.

The number of new H7N9 infections has tailed off in recent week, with the latest one reported May 7, which edged the number of cases to 131. However, the death toll continues to rise, because many of the previously confirmed patients are still hospitalized, battling the often serious complications of the disease, which can include acute respiratory distress syndrome and organ failure.

It's not clear why the outbreak has stalled. Influenza experts suspect closures of live-poultry markets could be curbing infections in humans, or the virus could be showing a drop in warm weather months seen with other avian influenza viruses. Another possibility is that H7N9 could be dying out, a pattern that has been seen before with other novel flu viruses.

Syria conflict: BBC shown 'signs of chemical attack'..... When News outlets finally have the guts to report atrocities carried out by rebels, we instantly have 1 news station reporting a supposed chemical attack or massacre

The BBC has been shown evidence apparently corroborating reports of a chemical attack in Syria last month.

A BBC correspondent who visited the northern town of Saraqeb was told by eyewitnesses that government helicopters had dropped at least two devices containing poisonous gas.

The government has vehemently denied claims it has used chemical agents.

The US has warned that such a development would be a "red line" for possible intervention.

However, President Barack Obama has said the current intelligence on possible chemical weapon usage did not constitute sufficient proof.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22549861

For the past several days reporters have reported from Syria, they have reported, supported by footage that rebels have been firing on Civilians, including woman and children....The Syrian army trying to protect them.

This report from Sky has been going around many news outlets, showing civilians begging for the reporters to tell the truth about Syria and the armed gangs terrorizing and killing them.

And we haven't even mentioned the Cannibalism yet, or the numerous videos showing Syrian Rebels Executing, unarmed, bound prisoners or/and civilians.

I may be wrong, the BBC have not reported on these fact, instead we have another "claim" and "signs" of chemical attack. (but no proof of "WHO" carried out these attacks)

Of course the UN statement from last week, stating that they have increasing evidence that the "rebels" have used chemical weapons is going ignored by all. In addition the severe lack of proof or rather NON, of the Syrian army using chemical weapons was also mentioned during this announcement, of course, also being ignored.

Parliament will debate EU referendum as rebel MPs force issue on Cameron with Private Member's Bills

David Cameron's authority suffered a huge blow when more than 100 Conservative MPs defied him by voting for a referendum on the European Union.

Britain moved closer to an in/out referendum as Nick Clegg told MPs: "It is a question of when, not if, because the rules [of the EU] are bound to change." He believes one is inevitable because a new EU treaty will be needed to entrench eurozone reforms in the next few years, and the Coalition has already passed a law guaranteeing a referendum if there is a significant transfer of powers to Brussels.

Some 114 Tories rejected pressure from their whips by opposing the Coalition's legislative programme because it does not offer the public a vote on EU membership. They backed an amendment to the Queen's Speech regretting the absence of a Referendum Bill. Although the amendment was defeated by 277 votes to 130, it was the biggest backbench revolt on Europe since the 2010 election.

Islamist rebels Massacre 11 Syrian soldiers for "massacres": video

Fighters of the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front in Syria executed 11 men they accused of taking part in massacres by President Bashar al-Assad's forces, a video published on Thursday showed.

A man whose face was covered in a black balaclava shot each man in the back of the head as they kneeled, blindfolded and lined up in a row in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor.

"The sharia court for the eastern region in Deir al-Zor has sentenced to death these apostate soldiers that committed massacres against our brothers and families in Syria," the executioner said on the video.

U.S. military instructors to train African troops for Mali in Niger

U.S. military instructors in Niger will train African forces participating in a U.N.-backed offensive against al Qaeda-linked Islamist militants in neighboring Mali, senior military officers said on Thursday.

The United States and several European nations have backed a French-led military intervention which since January 11 has driven militant insurgents out of the towns of northern Mali. Pockets of Islamist resistance remain in Mali's desert north.

The U.S. military did not participate in the ground offensive but aided the operation by transporting troops and providing intelligence information from drones based in Niger.

National UFO Alert: Four States Report 141 March Cases

The National UFO ALERT Rating System has been updated April 4, 2013, with California, Florida, New York and Texas moving to a UFO Alert 3 as the highest reporting states during the month of March 2013, filed with the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON).

California was the leading high-reporting state in March with 59 cases, up from 53 February cases and 63 January cases.

Those states in a UFO Alert 4 category with 13 or more reports include: Michigan, Arizona, Washington, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Oregon.

All other states move to a UFO Alert 5 category with lower numbers of UFO activity. The Watch States -- with 10 or more cases -- are Missouri and Indiana.

MUFON released March statistics April 1, where the total number of reported UFO sightings is listed by state. The UFO Examiner uses these statistics to rate states. The entire country was moved back to the lowest alert level -- UFO Alert 5.

California takes the lead with 59 cases; Florida, 30; New York, 26; and Texas, 26.

Israel: Mortar shells from Syria hit Mount Hermon in Golan Heights

Israel's military says stray mortar shells from the fighting in Syria have struck a popular tourist site, Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights.

The military says the shells struck early yesterday, apparently landing on an empty ski slope.

Mortar shells have landed in the Golan before but this was the first time they hit Mount Hermon, a site popular with Israeli tourists in wintertime.

The military says it didn't fire back but temporarily closed Mount Hermon for visitors.

Amazon paid less in corporation tax than it got in government grants despite making £4 BILLION through sales

Amazon is under fire yet again for its UK tax arrangements after ‘galling’ figures showed how little it paid last year.

In fact, the internet retailer received more in government grants than it paid into the Treasury coffers.

MPs and booksellers joined in the criticism after Amazon’s accounts, filed yesterday, showed it raked in more than £4billion in UK sales – but paid just £2.4million in corporation tax.

Will no one take the blame? As gang took girl of 12 as a sex slave, her father was walking the streets in vain, clutching her photo

The girls braved a hostile interrogation in court, branded liars by the gang’s barristers. A QC suggested one girl of 13 had ‘enjoyed herself’ during sex. Another suggested they were ‘naughty girls doing grown-up things’. But the jury believed them. Their awful stories are recounted here.

The Oxford sex ring and the preachers who teach young Muslim men that white girls are cheap

The terrible story of the Oxford child sex ring has brought shame not only on the city of dreaming spires, but also on the local Muslim community.

It is a sense of repulsion and outrage that I feel particularly strongly, working as a Muslim leader and Imam in this neighbourhood and trying to promote genuine cultural integration.

There is no doubt that the evil deeds of these men have badly set back the cause of cross-community harmony.

HS2 rail benefits to economy 'unclear', says National Audit Office...

The benefits of the HS2 high speed rail project on the economy are unclear, the National Audit Office (NAO) has warned.

The NAO said in a report that it had "reservations" about how the London-to-Birmingham link would deliver growth, adding that the project had an estimated £3.3bn funding gap.

But Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said the NAO's conclusions were based on old data.

Labour said the report was a "worrying wake-up call" for the government.
