Evil child abuser arrested following public appeal

One day after authorities released photos of a man purportedly culled from sexually explicit videos, a suspect is under arrest and his alleged child victim has been identified and taken to safety, officials tell CNN.

Authorities declined to name the man pending his appearance in federal court on Thursday. Even before his arrest, he had been charged as a "John Doe" with producing and distributing child pornography.

The man was arrested Wednesday, a day after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials issued a public appeal for help, releasing five photographs of the man clipped from the videos.

1 Child Dead, Over 60 Infected With H1N1 Flu in South China

A 10-year-old boy died due to the H1N1 strain of bird flu, and over 60 other children were infected with the disease, at a school last week in the Guangxi autonomous region in southern China, possibly due to a cheap consignment of live chickens sold in the local village 10 days earlier. These infections occurred in the midst of ongoing nationwide concern about the H7N9 strain of bird flu.

On Friday state media reported the outbreak at the Dingsan Elementary School in Laibin City. The one student had died the previous day, while five others were hospitalized in critical condition.

Local health authorities said 64 people, mostly school-age children, in the villages of Dingsan and nearby Eshan had similar symptoms such as fever, according to a report by Sina News.

White House Releases Emails On Benghazi Attack To Halt Cover-Up Claims

The White House has released 100 pages of emails to try to end claims of a cover-up over the attack on the US mission in Benghazi last year.

The Obama administration had up to now declined to make the documents public and had only let congressional investigators review the documents without making copies.

But the White House wants to end to the speculation that it engineered a cover-up of the September 11, 2012, attack that killed US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Oozing up From Below, Mysterious Marshmallow-like Substance Covers Nanjing Street

Ever wonder what happened to the remains of the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man when Venkman and the rest of the gang destroyed it by “crossing their streams” in Ghostbusters? Well, it appears they may have fallen through a crack in a New York City sidewalk only to emerge 29 years later all the way over to China!

On the evening of May 12, a large amount of an as of yet unidentified marshmallow-like substance was found oozing up out of the ground at an intersection in the Pukou district of Nanjing, China. Reportedly not the best smelling foamy matter in the world (in line with our Stay Puft rotting remains theory!), local residents believe it’s the result of recent large-scale road construction.

Pictures of the mess uploaded to China’s popular microblog website, Weibo, sparked a large amount of interest, and were later picked up and reported on by major Chinese media outlets. Comments on Chinese websites include, “It’s like a pancake,” “It’s Magic!” and “Looks like some kind of alien.”

Israel Hints at New Strikes, Warning Syria Not to Hit Back: SNL skit in the works

A senior Israeli official signaled on Wednesday that Israel was considering further military strikes on Syria to stop the transfer of advanced weapons to Islamic militants, and he warned the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, that his government would face crippling consequences if it retaliated against Israel.

The Israeli official said: “Israel is determined to continue to prevent the transfer of advanced weapons to Hezbollah. The transfer of such weapons to Hezbollah will destabilize and endanger the entire region.”

“If Syrian President Assad reacts by attacking Israel, or tries to strike Israel through his terrorist proxies,” the official said, “he will risk forfeiting his regime, for Israel will retaliate.”

The Israeli official, who has been briefed by high-level officials on the Syria situation in the past two days, declined to be identified, citing the need to protect internal Israeli deliberations. He contacted The New York Times on Wednesday.

The precise motives for Israel’s warning were uncertain: Israel could be trying to restrain Syria’s behavior without undertaking further military action, or alerting other countries to another strike. That would ratchet up the tension in an already fraught situation in Syria, where a civil war has been raging for more than two years.

Egypt militants planned to hit US and French embassies: MENA

An al Qaeda-linked militant cell detained in Egypt was planning suicide attacks on the French and U.S. embassies, the state news agency MENA reported on Wednesday, quoting investigators.

Authorities on Saturday announced the capture of three Egyptians with links to al Qaeda, saying they had been found in possession of 10 kg (22 pounds) of explosive materials.

"The investigations revealed that the suspects were intending to carry out terrorist bomb operations inside Egypt via suicide operations, penetrating the security cordon in front of the American and French embassies with a car bomb," MENA said, citing a source in the state security prosecutor's office.

MENA said the suspects had escaped from prison during the uprising that swept Hosni Mubarak from power in 2011.

China: Launch seen as test of anti-satellite muscle

The U.S. government believes a Chinese missile launch this week was the first test of a new interceptor that could be used to destroy a satellite in orbit, one U.S. defense official told Reuters on Wednesday.

China launched a large missile on Monday that reached 10,000 km (6,250 miles) above the earth, the highest suborbital launch seen worldwide since 1976, according to Jonathan McDowell at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

China has said the rocket, launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in western China, carried a science payload to study the earth's magnetosphere.

Bombs kill more than 30 people across Iraq

Bomb attacks in Shi'ite areas of Baghdad and in northern Iraq killed more than 30 people on Wednesday, following weeks of violence by Sunni Islamist insurgents determined to spark sectarian confrontation.

Tensions between minority Sunni Muslims and the Shi'ites who now lead Iraq are at their highest since U.S. troops pulled out in 2011, with relations coming under more pressure by the day from the largely sectarian conflict in neighboring Syria.

A string of car bombings hit Shi'ite neighborhoods across the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Wednesday evening, including one outside a cafe, killing at least 18 people, police said.

Hunt For Unidentified Rape Suspect

US authorities are seeking the public's help in identifying a suspect accused of raping a young girl and producing child pornography.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released images of a man suspected of sexually assaulting the girl, who is believed to be between seven and nine years old.

The agency believes the man is located somewhere in the US, and is hoping the photos will help lead to his arrest and the girl's rescue.

The unidentified male, believed to be between 45 and 55 years old, is balding and has a brown moustache.

ICE has encouraged anyone with information that could help identify the man to fill out an online tip form at www.ICE.gov/tips or call 1-866-347-2423 if in the US or Canada.

Callers anywhere else in the world can dial 802-872-6199.

The agency says tips will remain anonymous.

Syria: Civilians Come Under Fire From Rebels as they beg reporters to tell the "Truth"

We knew what was coming and so wore flak jackets and helmets. The demonstrators knew what was coming, had no protection, and still walked straight into the line of fire.

Some screamed at us: "Please tell the world the truth! We don't want the fighters here, we want the army to kill them!"

The 130 MPs backed an amendment to the Queen's Speech, tabled by Tory Eurosceptics John Baron and Peter Bone, in a House of Commons vote.

Mr Baron's amendment was signed by 92 MPs, mostly Conservative Eurosceptics. But, despite the support, it was defeated by 277 votes to 130, majority 147.

Regulators: Water with traces of radioactive hydrogen leaking at SC nuclear plant

Federal regulators say more than 100 gallons of water with traces of a radioactive hydrogen isotope have leaked at a nuclear power plant in South Carolina.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Wednesday that the tritium leak isn’t an emergency, but says the leak could reach groundwater.

The NRC says the leak was found late Tuesday in a fiberglass discharge pipe.

Duke Energy, which runs the plant, has started taking steps to fix the problem. The NRC says Duke is putting in a temporary sump pump to try to isolate the leak.

Novel coronavirus in Saudi Arabia: The two patients are health-care workers who were exposed to patients confirmed with #nCoV

  • From Sept 2012 to date, WHO has been informed of a global total of 40 lab-confirmed novel coronavirus cases, incl 20 deaths #nCoV

  • Since May to date, a total of 21 #nCoV patients, incl 9 deaths have been reported from the outbreak primarily linked to a hospital in KSA

The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia has informed WHO of an additional two laboratory-confirmed cases with infection of the novel coronavirus (nCoV).

The two patients are health care workers who were exposed to patients with confirmed nCoV. The first patient is a 45-year-old man who became ill on 2 May 2013 and is currently in a critical condition. The second patient is a 43-year-old woman with a coexisting health condition, who became ill on 8 May 2013 and is in a stable condition.

Although health care associated transmission has been observed before with nCoV (in Jordan in April 2012), this is the first time health care workers have been diagnosed with nCoV infection after exposure to patients. Health care facilities that provide care for patients with suspected nCoV infection should take appropriate measures to decrease the risk of transmission of the virus to other patients and health care workers. Health care facilities are reminded of the importance of systematic implementation of infection prevention and control (IPC).

China passes to Russia H7N9 virus strain

China has passed to Russia the H7N9 virus strain, head of the Russian Federal Consumer Rights Protection and Human Health Control Service (Rospotrebnadzor) Gennady Onishchenko said at a press conference at Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

“So far the situation with the virus is under control. China has kindly provided us the strain, and we plan to study it from a genetic point of view, to try its immunogenicity and consider it as a candidate strain for a possible vaccine, if this situation develops in the next season,” Onishchenko said, adding that “so far the World expert community that deals with influenza does not give such data.”

There have been 130 infected with the virus in China; according to recent reports, 36 diseased people have died. “The Chinese authorities are raising alarm, saying that the country’s economy has already lost 20 million US dollars,” Onishchenko said. “It was a blow to white meat. Poultry trade has been banned in Beijing and Shanghai. It has caused an economic slump,” he said.

Toxic chemical cloud drifts over Frankfurt, Germany

A poisonous cloud containing a potentially cancer-causing chemical was accidentally released over Frankfurt on Tuesday, with residents of two districts warned to stay indoors throughout the afternoon.

The cloud of nitrobenzene escaped after an accident at a chemical plant belonging to the firm Clariant in an industrial park near the Höchst district of the city.

The leak was only stopped after half an hour, a spokesman for the Frankfurt fire brigade said, adding that measurements outside the park suggested there were no immediate health risks.

Series of bombs kills at least 14 people across Iraq: police

At least 15 people were killed in bomb blasts and a shooting in Iraq on Wednesday, police and hospital sources said.

Ten people were killed when two car bombs exploded near government buildings in the ethnically mixed, oil-rich city of Kirkuk.

Relations between Iraq's Shi'ite, Sunni and ethnic Kurdish communities have come under growing strain since U.S. troops left the country in December 2011.

The conflict in neighboring Syria has also put pressure on Iraq's delicate intercommunal balance.

Myanmar authorities work to evacuate camps as cyclone nears

Authorities in Myanmar struggled on Wednesday to evacuate tens of thousands of people, most of them Rohingya Muslims, before a cyclone reaches camps in low-lying regions that have been their home since ethnic and religious unrest last year.

Cyclone Mahasen has already killed at least seven people and displaced 3,881 in Sri Lanka, its Disaster Management Center said on Tuesday.

The storm is moving north over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to reach land on Thursday, hitting north of Chittagong in Bangladesh.

Germany can't stop euro zone's longest recession....Why would they want to?, the Crisis benefits their economy... Convenient isn't it?

Germany's economy crept back into growth at the start of the year but not by enough to stop the euro zone from contracting for a sixth straight quarter, and France slid into recession.

Falling output across the bloc meant the 17-nation economy is in its longest recession since records began in 1995.

It shrank 0.2 percent in the January to March period, the EU's statistics office Eurostat said on Wednesday, worse than the 0.1 percent contraction forecast by a Reuters poll.

It's every debtor's dream. When asked for a loan, the bank not only agrees, but actually pays the borrower for their patronage. It sounds like a fairy tale, as though the laws of the market economy had been suspended. But on Monday it really happened.

The debtor in this case was the German government, which borrowed €3.9 billion ($5 billion) for the next six months at the unbelievable interest rate of -0.01 percent. Even the German Finance Agency was stunned. "This has never happened before," a spokesperson said.

July 2012 - Eurozone crisis saves Germany tens of billions

Germany has emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the European financial crisis.

While other countries in 17-country group that use the euro have battled against investor fears that their economies are buckling under the pressure of too much debt, Germany has managed to save tens of billions of euros thanks to its reputation as a safe place for investments.

May 2013 - Euro crisis saves Germany money

Throughout Europe's debt crisis, northern European leaders have often said they will not stand for taxpayers having to fork out for other countries' problems, and the notion of "taxpayer-funded bailouts" has taken root.

Yet despite three-and-a-half years of debt and banking turmoil, with bailouts totaling more than 400 billion euros, northern euro zone taxpayers have not actually lost a cent.

Murder charges have been filed against the 12-year-old boy accused of stabbing to death his eight-year-old sister at their home in northern California.

His lawyer Mark Reichel told KTVU-TV that he was charged with second degree murder and a special count for use of a dangerous weapon.

Leila Fowler was found on April 27 with knife wounds. Her brother was the only one at the Valley Springs home and initially told police he had scared off a long-haired intruder.

California 'Sinkhole' Swallows Hillside Homes

Families have been forced out of their homes after a hillside started mysteriously swallowing them up.

Homeowners first noticed cracks in the walls and had difficulty closing doors before the 30-year-old houses started collapsing in on themselves.

The land in northern California is now so unstable that heavy machinery can not move in to carry out demolition work and mail deliveries to remaining homes have been stopped to protect postal workers.

Cameron Braces For EU Referendum Showdowngo

David Cameron will face a Commons showdown later over his plans for a referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union.

A backbench Tory amendment expressing "regret" at the lack of an EU referendum Bill in the Queen's Speech has been selected by Speaker John Bercow and will be put to a vote tonight.

The Prime Minister insists he is "profoundly relaxed" about the prospect, despite scores of Tory MPs expected to support the amendment.

International Criminal Court launches inquiry into Israeli raid on Gaza flotilla

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has launched a preliminary inquiry into an Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla which left nine Turkish activists dead.

ICC chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said it would establish whether there were grounds for a full investigation.

The move follows a request from the Comoros islands, in which one of the vessels was registered.

The boats were trying to transport aid supplies to Gaza in May 2010.

Bangladesh, Myanmar on cyclone alert

HUNDREDS of thousands of people in Bangladesh and Myanmar have been ordered to move to safety as a cyclone barrelled towards low-lying coastal areas.

The United Nations has warned that more than eight million people could be at risk from Cyclone Mahasen, which is expected to make landfall on Thursday or Friday somewhere near the border between the two countries.

Bangladesh told hundreds of thousands of people living in low-lying areas to move to cyclone shelters, while Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) announced plans to move about 166,000 people at risk on its northwest coast.

Wig-wearing 'CIA spy' in Russia 'was investigating Boston bombings'

The Kommersant daily said it was probable that the suspected agent Ryan Fogle - officially a diplomat - was looking for information on the Tsarnaev brothers, who are alleged to have carried out the Marathon bombings.

It linked the Mr Fogle's capture, which threatens to further stress ties between Washington and Moscow, to a trip that a US delegation made to Dagestan in April in coordination with the Russian authorities to investigate the blasts.

Suspected bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev travelled to the region of Dagestan in 2012 and US authorities are eager to see if he built up contacts there with the local Islamist underground.

Exclusive: ‘We Will Slaughter All of Them.’ The Rebel Behind the Syrian Atrocity Video

News sites around the world have shown Khalid al-Hamad sink his teeth into what appears to be the lung of a dead Syrian government soldier. His fellow rebels have called for him to be arrested or killed for the act. Human-rights groups have condemned him. But al-Hamad has no regrets.

In an interview conducted via Skype in the early hours of May 14, al-Hamad explained to TIME what caused him to cut out the soldier’s organs: “We opened his cell phone, and I found a clip of a woman and her two daughters fully naked and he was humiliating them, and sticking a stick here and there.”

The video, a 27-second clip in which al-Hamad brandishes organs that appear to be the lungs and heart of the Syrian soldier who lies dead at al-Hamad’s feet, was first seen by two TIME reporters in April. A few weeks later, TIME obtained a copy. Though we had been told by witnesses to the filming that the video was legitimate, we set about authenticating its content, aware of the potential that it could have been faked for propaganda purposes. Al-Hamad has now confirmed that the video is real, and that he did indeed take a bite of the soldier’s lung. (At the time of filming, al-Hamad believed he was biting into the liver. A surgeon who has seen the video confirms that the organ in question was a lung, which somewhat resembles the liver). On May 12, a copy of the video appeared on a proregime website, sparking a flood of Facebook Shares and YouTube views.

Siberian researchers start studying H7N9 flu strain

Researchers at the Vektor state virology and bioengineering research center, based in Novosibirsk, plan to study a strain of the H7N9 flu virus, brought from China, Vektor's research and international cooperation director, Raisa Martynyuk, told Interfax.

"We received the strain on Monday and we are working on it. We are to find out how it reacts to drugs already available, how effective the known methods of treatment are, how it multiplies and many other things," she said.

Martynyuk also said that differences are to be established between the pathogenic effects of this strain compared to others, including H5N1 and the pandemic H1N1, she said.

China Virus Alert: H7N9, H5N1 Strains Active, Tibet Outbreak Kills 1 Child

While China continues to wrestle H7N9 which had so far claimed 35 lives, it has succumbed to yet another subtype of the Influenza A viruses, this time the H5N1. The country had reported an outbreak in its southern part Tibet, where a child has died and 64 other children remain infected.

Local health authorities theorized the children contracted the disease from eating live chickens that were sold 10 days earlier.

The children came from the Guangxi autonomous region. But cases were likewise detected in the villages of Dingsan and nearby Eshan. School authorities ordered the closure of the Dingsan Elementary School to prevent further spreading.

Health experts are now looking at a possible angle that the Tibet outbreak did not originally start from there.
