Paris: PSG Trophy Celebrations Turn Violent

Celebrations to mark Paris St Germain's first Ligue 1 title in 19 years were cut short when supporters clashed with police.

Up to 15,000 PSG fans had gathered in the Place de Trocadero by the Eiffel Tower to watch the team parade the champion's trophy.

But the occasion turned violent with the throwing of smoke bombs, scuffles and stand-offs between police and hardline supporters known as 'ultras'.

Cameron To Publish In/Out EU Referendum Bill

David Cameron is to publish a draft bill that will guarantee the British public an in/out EU referendum by 2017.

The Prime Minister is to seize the initiative amid squabbling within the Conservative Party and propose laws that will pave the way for a vote on whether Britain should remain in the EU.

A senior Conservative source said the party would "examine all opportunities" to bring the legislation before Parliament - including using the vehicle of a private member's bill.

Google-Berg: Global Elite Transforms Itself For Technocratic Revolution

The secretive Bilderberg Group is currently undergoing a major transformation that will see it and other high profile networks merge under the banner of Google as the elite accelerates its plan to consolidate its technocratic agenda.

This past weekend, Infowars reporters Paul Joseph Watson and Jon Scobie visited the luxury Grove Hotel in Watford, UK, site of the 2013 Bilderberg Group conference set to take place June 6-9, a clandestine annual gathering of over 100 of the world’s most influential power brokers in the fields of politics, academia, technology, business and banking.

The investigation was prompted by our sources, who advised us to visit the Grove in advance of Bilderberg 2013. This is part one of what promises to be a developing story as the pieces of the jigsaw fall into place backed up by years of Bilderberg tracking and research.

What we discovered was groundbreaking and represents one of if not the most important development in Bilderberg’s 59 year history.

Police secure man with explosive device in Westland City Hall, Michigan

A man has been detained by police near Detroit, Michigan after reportedly entering Westland City Hall claiming to have explosives.

Authorities confirmed around 1:30 p.m. local time that the suspect has been secured, but not before a brief scare that was initially reported to involve hostages.

Police locked-down a section of Westland, Michigan early Monday afternoon and additional units were called in to investigate the situation. The Michigan State Police bomb squad was deployed to the scene, reported WJBK, and at least two schools in the area were placed on precautionary lockdown.

Reportedly, a man entered Westland City Hall with explosives, but police declined to comment further other than telling local media there’s “a situation.”

“We heard there’s a bomb situation at City Hall,” Kristen McRae, who works at Griffith Veterinary Hospital near City Hall, told the Detroit Free Press. “We have a chopper flying above. There’s a heavy police presence.”

“I heard it’s a hostage situation,” an employee of a nearby Boston Market restaurant added to CBS.

Westland, MI is located around 16 miles west of Detroit and is the tenth largest city in the state of Michigan.

US Government now overtly tapping the press, seizing records, as Washington crisis deepens

The Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records of reporters and editors for The Associated Press in what the news cooperative's top executive called a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into how news organizations gather the news.

The records obtained by the Justice Department listed outgoing calls for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, general AP office numbers in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn., and the main number for AP reporters in the House of Representatives press gallery, according to attorneys for the AP. It was not clear if the records also included incoming calls or the duration of calls.

In all, the government seized the records for more than 20 separate telephone lines assigned to AP and its journalists in April and May of 2012. The exact number of journalists who used the phone lines during that period is unknown but more than 100 journalists work in the offices where phone records were targeted, on a wide array of stories about government and other matters.

Multiple explosions rock West Virginia gas plant

Two people are reported injured after an explosion rocked a supply company in Putnam County, West Virginia Monday. Emergency crews responding to the blast, which came at approximately 3:00 pm local time, reported high flames in the area.

Investigators are still unsure what caused the initial explosion but a spokesman from the Putnam County, West Virginia emergency management office told the Charleston Gazette that as many as six canisters of acetylene, a gas commonly used for welding and torch-cutting, blew up.

One man suffered burns to his face and the other burns to his arms. Both victims were hospitalized, although the full extent of their injuries is not yet known.

The explosion took place at the Airgas supply company, the largest US distributor of industrial medical and specialty gases, including welding supplies and other equipment, according to WOWK-TV in West Virginia. The plant is located in the town of Bancroft, where surrounding businesses have been evacuated as a safety precaution.

Witnesses told the Gazette that the explosion was large enough to be heard, and felt, from about a half a mile away from the Airgas building.

“The first one was really big,” said Doug Barker, a local business owner. “Then there were a series of smaller [explosions]. Since it was at the Airgas facility, it was probably a bunch of smaller tanks going off.”

Fire crews reportedly had the flames under control by 3:45 pm local time.

Washington & Wall Street: Ben Bernanke's Global Inflation Strategy

The Bank of Japan has embarked on a deliberate act of economic warfare, aimed in part against China and the other nations of Asia. The attack is in the form of expansion of Japan’s money supply and the related decline in the value of the yen, this to boost Japan’s economy. The Japanese are desperate to boost economic activity, albeit by imitating the Fed’s own failed pro-inflation policies.

The BOJ creates new yen and then sells its currency and buys dollars. The Japanese are one of the biggest buyers of US agency securities, for example, effective duplicating the Fed’s own “quantitative easing” or QE to keep mortgage rates low. But what neither officials at the Fed or BOJ understand is that their actions are futile in terms of creating real jobs and growth, and dangerous regards inflation. Two percent inflation over two decades destroys the purchasing power of working people, but nobody at the Fed cares.

“The Bank of Japan is taking down the entire world,” worries lawyer and author James Rickards, but allows that the Japanese are only following the bad example of the Federal Open Market Committee. “Bernanke has advanced the idea that if we all hold hands and devalue together, it is OK as far as inflation is concerned. If we all ease at the same time, then it is not a currency war.”

North Korea names another new armed forces minister

North Korea has replaced the hardline general who headed its armed forces ministry, in a further reshuffling of the top brass by young leader Kim Jong-un.

General Jang Jong-nam was named "minister of the People's Armed Forces" by state news agency KCNA in a report, the third official to take the role since Kim Jong-un formally assumed power in North Korea just over a year ago.

Jang, a relatively unknown general, was previously commander of the First Corps of the Korean People's Army.

The report would appear to show that armed forces ministry chief Kim Kyok-sik, reputed to have been behind the 2010 shelling of a South Korean island that killed four people, had been replaced.

Trial of 'celebrity terrorist' Carlos the Jackal starts in confusion in Paris

The 1970s “celebrity terrorist” Ilich Ramirez Sanchez – better known as “Carlos the Jackal” – complained on Monday that the Venezuelan government was trying to sabotage his appeal against life imprisonment in France.

Sanchez, 63, had counted on the late Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, to finance his six weeks long appeal hearing which has begun in Paris. He told the court that he had no money and he had been forced to order his large defence team to stay at home.

Sanchez, the symbol of a “cool but cruel” middle class international terrorism in the 1970s and 1980s, has been in jail in France since he was kidnapped by French agents in Sudan in 1994. He was convicted in 1997 of killing two French policemen and an informer. He was given a second life sentence in 2011 for organising four terrorist attacks in France in the early 1980s in which 11 people died.

On the first day of his appeal hearing on Monday, he asked the court to appoint “duty lawyers” at the expense of the French taxpayer. “They won’t know the arguments but I know them well,” he said. “It won’t help my defence but we will muddle along.”

After a brief adjournment, the court accepted his request. Sanchez nodded and said: “A blonde and a brunette, please”.

Britain to double 'non-lethal' support to Syrian opposition forces as Cameron warns Assad he cannot win military battle

Britain is to double its support for Syrian opposition forces, as David Cameron left the door open to providing arms in the coming weeks,
The Prime Minister said ending the bloody conflict was the most pressing global challenge, and pledged to step up the non-lethal equipment being shipped to forces trying to overthrow President Assad.

He warned that without providing more than ‘technical advice’ to moderate Syrian rebels, there was a risk that extremists groups would take hold.

Obama To Cameron: 'Fix' Broken EU Relationship

Barack Obama has told David Cameron that the UK must "fix" its relationship with Europe because it is important to the country's place in the world.

Speaking at a joint news conference Mr Obama said ultimately if there was a referendum over membership of the European Union then the "people of the UK have to make decisions for themselves".

However, he said: "You probably want to see if you can fix what's broken in a very important relationship before you break it off. Seems to make sense to me."

Merkel says has no secrets about her communist past

Angela Merkel has dismissed claims in a new book that she was more actively committed to East Germany's communist regime than she has acknowledged, saying she has never kept anything secret about her past.

The book, "The first life of Angela M.", says that Merkel, who will seek a third term as chancellor in a federal election in September, was responsible for Marxist-Leninist education in a unit of the state's youth wing, in a role that went beyond the cultural duties she has previously spoken of.

Asked about the claims late on Sunday after a screening of her favorite film, a 1973 East German love story, Merkel said she had always spoken openly and to the best of her memory.

Syria blames 'murderer' Erdogan for bombings

Syria's information minister has blamed Turkey's government for deadly car bombings near the Syrian border and branded Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan a "murderer", state-run Russian TV company RT reported on Monday.

The bombings took place as prospects appeared to improve for diplomacy to try to end the war in Syria, after Moscow and Washington announced a joint effort to bring government and rebels to an international conference as soon as possible.

"All responsibility for what has happened lies with the Turkish government and Erdogan personally," RT quoted Omran Zubi as saying in an interview with its Arabic-language channel.

Bangladesh rescue operation near end; collapse death toll at 1,127

Bangladeshi salvage workers on Monday neared the end of their search for victims of the collapse of a factory building, scouring the basement of the complex that crumbled in on itself and killed 1,127 people.

A series of deadly incidents at factories, including a fire in November that killed 112 people, has focused global attention on safety standards in Bangladesh's booming garment industry.

The toll of 1,127 - the world's most deadly industrial accident since 1984 Bhopal disaster in India - could be the final one as no more bodies were found on Monday, a spokesman at the army control room coordinating the salvage operation said.

U.S. soldier John Russell acted with premeditation in killing comrades in Iraq: judge

A U.S. soldier who pleaded guilty to killing five fellow servicemen at a combat stress clinic in Iraq acted with premeditation in the shooting spree, a military judge ruled on Monday.

U.S. Army Sergeant John Russell pleaded guilty last month to killing two medical staff officers and three soldiers at Camp Liberty in Baghdad in a 2009 shooting the military has said could have been triggered by combat stress.

Russell faced an abbreviated court-martial at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state to determine the level of his guilt. A military judge was to determine whether Russell acted with premeditation, as prosecutors said, or on impulse, as the defense argued.

Cyclone Mahasen hreatens Burma and Bangladesh

Millions of people living along the coast of the Bay of Bengal in Burma and Bangladesh are expected to be affected when Cyclone Mahasen makes landfall some time on Thursday.

Officials in Burma have begun evacuating people while the meteorological office in neighbouring Bangladesh is closely monitoring the weather pattern, which is believed to be gathering sufficient strength to be classified a "severe cyclonic storm" in the next 24 hours.

About 140,000 refugees from religious violence in Burma living in tented accommodation along the coast are believed to be particularly at risk from Mahasen.

'Father' of Pakistan's Nukes Says N.Korea Is Ready to Attack

The colourful "father" of Pakistan's nuclear bomb, Abdul Qadeer Khan, has claimed North Korea may have perfected a nuclear weapon and long-range missile warheads, according to Al Jazeera English.

Khan, a gifted scientist but shady individual, is believed to have sold nuclear technology to North Korea.

"No doubt they are quite capable and they can do it," Khan told the channel. "They can even build an [intercontinental ballistic missile] if they want to."

Khan admitted the North's missile technology is "crude" and "not as sophisticated as the western countries have. But sometimes a crude system will also work. It is good enough to frighten other people."

Singapore: 11 investigated for H7N9, 24 for novel coronavirus; none positive

Eleven people in Singapore have been investigated for the avian flu virus H7N9 and another 24 for novel coronavirus to date.

But none was positive.

Health Minister Gan Kim Yong, who revealed this in Parliament on Monday, said that so long as there is no sustained human-to-human transmission of the two diseases, the risk of an outbreak in Singapore will remain low.

Mr Gan said the H7 avian influenza virus has not been detected in tests on local and imported birds.

Singapore also does not import live poultry, birds or frozen poultry meat from China.

H7N9: Warning on Indonesia bird flu risk

I Wayan Teguh Wibawan, a researcher at the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB), said at a seminar on Saturday that Indonesian farmers sometimes kept chickens and ducks in close quarters, a practice also carried out by their Chinese equivalents.

The Jakarta Globe reported that allowing animals to sleep, eat and defecate in the same space is a key factor in the spread of bird flu.

“This tends to facilitate the spread of the H7N9 virus,” the researcher said, calling on farmers to take action to separate farm animals and limit the number kept in any one place, to avoid overcrowding.

“The government should also work to increase farmers’ awareness and tighten monitoring,” he added.

Although the Indonesian government has confirmed some cases of H7N9 infection in poultry, there have been no reports of human infections from the new strain in the country.

Slovenia can avoid bailout, needs reforms: German finance minister

Slovenia can get by without an international bailout program but will need to adopt tough austerity measures, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told German radio on Monday.

Last week, the tiny former Yugoslav republic announced plans to sell state firms and raise value-added tax to help stabilize its finances and avoid becoming the latest euro zone country after Cyprus to require a painful bailout program.

"Slovenia can manage (without a bailout program). However it must also carry out some painful restructuring (of its economy)," Schaeuble told SWR 2 radio.

Analysis: Malta unlikely to follow Cyprus into crisis

Cyprus and Malta have a lot in common: Mediterranean islands enjoying 10 months of sunshine a year, they joined the European Union in 2004, use the euro and have banking sectors that dwarf their economies.

There are so many similarities that some investors have wondered whether Malta might follow Cyprus in needing a bailout to survive the region's economic crisis.

But Malta's risk profile is far different to that of Cyprus, which received a 10-billion-euro aid package last month aimed at preventing its collapse and a possible exit from the euro zone.

On the basis of banking risk and its economy, it seems unlikely that it will be the next euro member - after Cyprus, Ireland, Greece, Portugal and Spain - to need rescuing.

Mexico On Alert As Popocatepetl Spews Steam

Seismic activity has increased at Popocatepetl volcano near Mexico City, causing authorities to impose a seven-mile exclusion zone around the crater.

Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Centre said the 17,886ft white-capped volcano spewed a plume of steam more than half a mile into the sky and over the weekend lava was thrown out over the crater.

The government has sent soldiers and police to the area in the event of a bigger eruption, with the authorities in towns in two central states placed on alert.

Shelters have been prepared in the states of Mexico and Puebla.

Evans 'rape' arrest was triggered by Tory MP who accompanied alleged victim to police station

The inquiry into claims of rape against Deputy Speaker Nigel Evans was launched after a fellow Tory MP accompanied an alleged victim to a police station, it has been claimed.

Mr Evans, MP for Ribble Valley, was arrested earlier this month over allegations that he had raped one man and subjected another to a sexual assault.

He vigorously denies the claims and has refused to stand down as deputy to Commons Speaker John Bercow.

Liberator: 3D printed guns are going to create big legal precedents

By now, everyone's heard about the 3D printed gun that Defense Distributed demonstrated last week. The Texas-based group has been steadily working its way up the 3D printed firearms evolutionary ladder, making parts for guns, then guns themselves, then firing a gun, then making the plans for running up your own pistols on a nearby 3D printer. If Defense Distributed had set out to create a moral panic over 3D printing, they could have picked no better project.

The prevailing opinions on 3D printed guns fall into two major categories: the apocalyptic and the nonchalant. The apocalyptics – including grandstanding politicos like New York State senator Steve Israel, who's already introduced legislation aimed at banning 3D printed guns – greet this news with hysterics: the age of the undetectable plastic gun to be upon us, and Something Must Be Done. The nonchalant point out that the 3D printed gun that Defense Distributed fired cost a small fortune and requires a highly specialised and even more expensive 3D printer to produce; is fragile and liable to self-destruction after a few rounds are fired, and remind the apocalyptics that it's much, much easier to go and buy a traditional gun in the criminal underground than it is to produce a working 3D printed item.

There's some truth in both points of view, but it's hard to get at the truth when you're talking about an issue as polarising as guns. It doesn't help that Defense Distributed's founder Cody Wilson describes the project in ideologically loaded terms, calling his first gun "the Liberator" in homage to the cheap single-shot pistols that the Allies made for distribution in Nazi-occupied France – Wilson here implying that the ability to print a gun and arm yourself is integral to the defence against tyranny.

Palestinian faction hails Damascus' permission to plan attacks against Israel

A Damascus-based Palestinian faction hailed on Saturday the Syrian government's decision to allow Palestinian groups to wage attacks against Israel from its occupied Golan Heights.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) welcomed Damascus' recent hint that it would open the Golan front for the Palestinian groups to launch attacks against Israel in retaliation for the Israeli airstrikes on three Syrian military sites last week, according to a statement faxed to Xinhua.

The PFLP-GC stressed that it is ready to launch military operations against the "Zionist enemy," adding that giving an access to the Golan front required a popular pressure to open all other Arab fronts, especially the Jordanian front.

WHO warns that deadly novel coronavirus could be passed from person to person

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that it appears likely the novel coronavirus can be passed between people in close contact.

This comes after France confirmed a second case of a deadly new respiratory virus related to Sars, as they increased efforts to inform the public about how to avoid the illness and watch for its signs.

A hospital roommate of the 65-year-old man who initially contracted the virus tested positive for the illness. The second patient's condition has deteriorated, requiring treatment in intensive care, Health Minister Marisol Touraine said at a news conference. The minister added that the first patient is "in a stable but worrisome situation."

The virus is known to cause pneumonia and sometimes kidney failure.

Gove and Hammond would say No to Europe... and seven Cabinet colleagues including Duncan Smith privately agree

Michael Gove and Philip Hammond yesterday became the first Cabinet ministers to say publicly that they would vote for Britain to leave the EU.

Government sources said at least seven of their senior colleagues agreed privately.

Mr Gove said life outside the EU ‘would be perfectly tolerable’. Mr Hammond, when asked if he would vote to leave if significant powers cannot be reclaimed, replied: ‘Yes.’

The revelations will pile pressure on David Cameron to make clear that he would lead an ‘Out’ campaign if he does not secure a major change in Britain’s relationship with Brussels.

Insight: Nigeria's Islamists staging bolder, deadlier comeback

After a crackdown pushed them out of Nigeria's northern cities, Islamist militant group Boko Haram have regrouped, rearmed and are staging a bold comeback that has already allowed them to seize control over parts of the northeast.

Using porous borders with Chad, Niger and Cameroon in the desolate scrubland around Lake Chad, they are smuggling bigger weapons, staging cross-border raids, killing and kidnapping in an escalation of violence that could further draw Nigeria's neighbors into its counter-insurgency fight, security officials say.

The Islamists now control at least 10 of the 27 local council areas in Borno state, Nigeria's most remote northeastern region on the edge of the Sahara and a relic of one of Africa's oldest medieval Islamic empires, security sources there say.

Russia Warns Obama: Global War Over “Bee Apocalypse” Coming Soon

The shocking minutes relating to President Putin’s meeting this past week with US Secretary of State John Kerry reveal the Russian leaders “extreme outrage” over the Obama regimes continued protection of global seed and plant bio-genetic giants Syngenta and Monsanto in the face of a growing “bee apocalypse” that the Kremlin warns “will most certainly” lead to world war.

According to these minutes, released in the Kremlin today by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation (MNRE), Putin was so incensed over the Obama regimes refusal to discuss this grave matter that he refused for three hours to even meet with Kerry, who had traveled to Moscow on a scheduled diplomatic mission, but then relented so as to not cause an even greater rift between these two nations.

At the center of this dispute between Russia and the US, this MNRE report says, is the “undisputed evidence” that a class of neuro-active insecticides chemically related to nicotine, known as neonicotinoids, are destroying our planets bee population, and which if left unchecked could destroy our world’s ability to grow enough food to feed its population.

Coronavirus: Infection 'Spreads Between People' and has Killed 59.4% of those who became infected

Health officials have said a deadly virus which has killed 18 people worldwide appears to be able to spread from person-to-person.

There have been 33 reported cases of the Sars-like novel coronavirus, known as hCoV-EMC, which causes severe pneumonia in victims and sometimes kidney failure.

It is most closely related to a bat virus and scientists are considering whether bats, camels or goats are a possible source of infection.

Migrant loophole 'lets in 20,000 a year': Rule allows EU nationals living here to bring their families into Britain without checks

Twenty thousand migrants a year are being let into Britain under a loophole that could be exploited by sham-marriage racketeers, a report warns today.

Under European law, EU nationals living in this country are allowed to bring in spouses or partners and their families from anywhere in the world with no checks or qualifications.

But British citizens who want to bring in a wife, husband or partner and family from abroad must first show they have an income of £18,600 or more to guarantee their dependants will not become a burden on the taxpayer.

Italy PM Letta warns coalition allies as tension mounts

Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta warned his center-right coalition partners on Sunday that the future of the government was at risk following a furious row over Silvio Berlusconi's attacks on magistrates in a rally at the weekend.

Simmering tensions between the partners in Letta's uneasy coalition between traditional rivals on the right and left broke out into the open after the rally in the northern city of Brescia attended by ministers from Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL) party.

Berlusconi accused magistrates of trying to eliminate him politically, after his appeal against a four-year jail sentence for tax fraud was rejected last week.

U.S. cyberwar strategy stokes fear of blowback

Even as the U.S. government confronts rival powers over widespread Internet espionage, it has become the biggest buyer in a burgeoning gray market where hackers and security firms sell tools for breaking into computers.

The strategy is spurring concern in the technology industry and intelligence community that Washington is in effect encouraging hacking and failing to disclose to software companies and customers the vulnerabilities exploited by the purchased hacks.

That's because U.S. intelligence and military agencies aren't buying the tools primarily to fend off attacks. Rather, they are using the tools to infiltrate computer networks overseas, leaving behind spy programs and cyber-weapons that can disrupt data or damage systems.

The core problem: Spy tools and cyber-weapons rely on vulnerabilities in existing software programs, and these hacks would be much less useful to the government if the flaws were exposed through public warnings. So the more the government spends on offensive techniques, the greater its interest in making sure that security holes in widely used software remain unrepaired.

Tyrone Murphy Killed: Police end hostage standoff in New Jersey; suspect dead

Three children trapped all weekend in a New Jersey bedroom with a gunmen and the dead body of their mother were freed early Sunday when police burst through the door and stopped the gunman with a single shot, authorities said.

The suspect died of his wound shortly after the siege ended.

A SWAT team using flash-bang grenades stormed a back door of the home in Trenton about 3:45 a.m. EDT Sunday and moved to the second floor, where they fired the single shot at gunman Gerald Tyrone Murphy before taking him into custody, State Police Colonel Rick Fuentes told a news conference.

Another official said the children had been trapped inside the room for at least the length of the standoff.

Syria is 'Israel-Iran battlefield'

What Syria asserts is Israel's launch of two air strikes on Damascus last week presents a marked and dangerous escalation of that country's involvement in the Syrian war.

Israel's intervention -- if confirmed -- also shows how the conflict has mutated from a political uprising to an internal armed struggle, and now to a regional war by proxy fiercely fought on Syria's killing fields. (Israel has a policy of refusing to confirm or deny attacks attributed to its military.)
The confrontation in Syria has become more complex, more perilous, and more difficult to resolve.

The Syrian struggle has not only spread into Syria's neighbors, like Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan and Turkey -- but has also become a battlefield wherein Israel and Iran are challenging each other.

Novel coronavirus: Second case of challenging virus reported in France

A person who shared a hospital room with a patient who has a newly discovered and sometimes deadly virus also has tested positive for the infection, the French Health Ministry said Sunday.

The second patient diagnosed with the novel coronavirus, known as NCoV, was in the same room as a man with the infection at Valenciennes hospital from April 27 to 29.

The newly diagnosed person is under isolation at the University Hospital of Lille, the ministry said.

NCoV virus was recently found for the first time in humans and scattered reported cases have occurred across parts of the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia.

"Of most concern, however, is the fact that the different clusters seen in multiple countries increasingly support the hypothesis that when there is close contact this novel coronavirus can transmit from person to person."

Lake County homes sinking; 'it's a slow-motion disaster' - California

Home in a subdivision in Lake County are sinking, prompting officials to seek help.

Eight homes are now abandoned and 10 others are under notice of imminent evacuation as a hilltop with sweeping vistas of Clear Lake and the Mt. Konocti volcano swallows the subdivision built 30 years ago.

The Lake County Board of Supervisors asked Gov. Jerry Brown to declare an emergency so funding might be available to stabilize utilities and determine the cause of the collapse. On May 6, state Sen. Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa) wrote a letter of support asking Brown for immediate action. The California Emergency Management Agency said Brown was still assessing the situation.

On Wednesday, the state sent a water resources engineer and a geologist to look at the problem. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) sent a representative the next day.
