Hizbollah Warns Syria Supplying 'New Weapons'

Hizbollah says it will gain an arsenal of "sophisticated" weapons from Syria following Israeli strikes on the capital Damascus.

The claim was made by the group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, as Britain warned it would push the EU to designate Hizbollah's military wing as a terrorist organisation.

It follows a series of raids and air strikes around Damascus which Israeli sources, quoted by Reuters, said were designed to take out "game-changing" Iranian missiles destined for use by Hizbollah.

U.S. charges eight in $45 million cyber crime scheme

The U.S. government charged eight individuals with stealing debit card data from two Middle Eastern banks in a scheme that prosecutors said netted $45 million in a matter of hours - a crime they called one of the biggest bank heists in history.

A New York-based group hacked into credit card processors' computers to steal Mastercard Inc (MA.N) debit card data, which they used to make approximately 36,000 transactions over a total of 10 hours in 24 countries, the Justice Department said.

The cards were issued by National Bank of Ras Al-Khaimah (RAKB.AD) in the United Arab Emirates and Bank of Muscat in Oman, prosecutors said.

Syrian government "likely" to have used chemical weapons, says UK.....Proof?

Britain said on Thursday it believed it was "very likely" the Syrian government had used chemical weapons, and Turkey said it was testing victims of the Syrian civil war for traces of such substances.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry expressed gratitude to Russia for its willingness to try to arrange a "Geneva two" conference to negotiate an end to the conflict, in a sign of a thawing of the long diplomatic chill between Washington and Moscow, Syria's strongest ally.

Damascus and the head of the Arab League welcomed the apparent rapprochement between the United States and Russia this week. Syrian opposition leaders are skeptical of an initiative they fear might let President Bashar al-Assad hang on to power.

Christina Hale Killed By Mushrooms Picked In Garden

A woman died after she ate one of the world's most poisonous mushrooms that she unwittingly picked from her garden in Somerset, an inquest has heard.

Christina Hale died from multiple organ failure five days after using death caps while cooking her and her husband an evening meal.

The death cap is so poisonous that eating just half of one can be fatal and there is no antidote.

Mrs Hale had gathered the deadly fungi at the couple's Bridgwater home and used them to make mushroom soup last November.

5 Arrested In Brutal High School Fight Captured On Video

It’s a story you saw first on 3 – A vicious beating inside a local high school and a cell phone camera captured it all.

On Wednesday, police arrested five students they say were involved in the fight at Chester High School. Police say even more arrests could be coming.

The video shows a group of students not only throwing punches, but using chairs to attack and beat a 16-year-old boy inside the library of Chester High School. According to police, among the arrested students is 18-year-old Edward Stanley who appears to have recorded the fight on his cell phone and later posted the video on Facebook.

“It’s terrible. It’s something that is ungodly. It’s like the devils were in there.”

A man who identified himself as the father of the 16-year-old victim had no idea the video existed until we showed it to him. He says his son, who now has four stitches in the back of his head, moved to Chester from Delaware, just three months ago. He asked to remain anonymous.

Outbreak of mice-vector hemorrhagic fever in Argentina

The contagion potential of the disease covers a wide area of central Argentina: the provinces of Buenos Aires, Cordoba, La Pampa and Santa Fe, with other strains of the disease in Paraguay and Bolivia.

The death and hospitalization were confirmed by the Epidemiology Director from the city of Rosario.

The Junin virus is found in some species of camp mice that contaminate with their saliva, urine and excrement, and tend to proliferate in crop time.

When harvesters chop up the four to six centimetres long brownish rodents, their blood is also potentially contaminating.

Israel Putting Middles East peace process at risk again, as it gives go-ahead for 300 new homes in West Bank

Hope earlier in the week that a decision to freeze the construction of new Israeli settler homes in the occupied West Bank could renew the moribund peace process were dealt a blow earlier today when it transpired that permission had been granted to build nearly 300 new houses close to the Palestinian administrative capital, Ramallah.

The announcement will disappoint Americans – especially the Secretary of State, John Kerry - who have spent two months attempting to broker a new deal between the Israeli and Palestinian leaderships.

The Palestinians maintain a long held position that new talks are only possible with a new moratorium of settlement building. The Americans and Israelis say new talks should go ahead without pre-conditions. Settlements are considered illegal under international law.

EU Imposes Import Duties on China solar panels and increasing the Risk of a Trade War..... German Solar Manufacturers shares on the Up!

The European Commission agreed to impose punitive import duties on solar panels from China in a move to guard against what it sees as dumping of cheap goods in Europe, prompting a cautious response from Beijing which called for further dialogue.

EU commissioners backed EU Trade Chief Karel De Gucht's proposal to levy the provisional duties by June 6 and make Chinese solar exports less attractive, two officials said.

Shares in German manufacturers SolarWorld, Phoenix Solar and Centrotherm rose as much as 7 percent on the decision, while Frankfurt-listed shares in China's Suntech were down more than 4 percent.

Pressure mounts on David Cameron as Michael Portillo joins calls to quit EU

David Cameron was under fresh pressure on Europe today after another Tory heavyweight insisted Britain should leave the EU.

Former Cabinet minister Michael Portillo suggested Mr Cameron's promise of an in-out referendum on membership after 2015 was an "insincere ploy".

"I would vote No and fervently hope that the British have more guts than those who govern us, and more than those who govern us think we have," he said.

CNN Anchors Pretend They’re Having A “Satellite Interview” Even Though They’re In The Same Parking Lot.

“Sorry, we’re experiencing a delay in the broadcast while we both wait for this bus to go by.”

Yes, those are all the same cars. Apparently they thought we wouldn’t notice because Nancy is on the right side of the screen, when in reality she is to Asleigh Banfield’s left. See The Atlantic Wire’sexcellent breakdown of the shots to see exactly what happened. Tricky, CNN, very tricky. We understand, though. When a major crime story like the Cleveland Kidnapping breaks, you have to send in Nancy Grace. However, since Nancy Grace is a poorly-medicated vengeance demon who’s always just a bad morning away from ending up on her own show, you also send in a real anchor with whom she can “correspond.” Unfortunately, it’s hard to get shooting permits in Cleveland on short notice, so you set up in the same parking lot. Do us a favor, CNN, just put them next to each other and have them talk into each other’s faces instead of relaying their words through satellites to come back down 30 feet away like we’re idiots.

Another death in China raises H7N9 fatalities to 32

Another patient in China has died from an H7N9 influenza infection, raising the number of fatal illnesses to 32, though no new cases were reported today, holding the overall case total to 131.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported the death today in an update based on information from China's National Health and Family Planning Commission.

The report did not contain any details about the patient who died or his or her location, though the WHO said on its Twitter feed that the death was a retrospective one.

The WHO's update on H7N9 cases today also acknowledged the infection of a 79-year-old woman from Jianxi province whose case was first announced by Chinese officials yesterday. The WHO said she started having symptoms on May 3. Yesterday Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said the woman is in stable condition.

In addition, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) today published the second update of its rapid risk assessment on H7N9 influenza but said the overall risk to Europe from the disease hasn't changed. So far nearly all of the cases are sporadic, it said, with no obvious epidemiologic links.

Drought-stricken Panama orders power rationing, closes schools

Panama on Tuesday ordered government offices and private businesses to slash their power consumption and temporarily closed schools in response to a drought that has sapped the country’s hydroelectric energy supply.

Opening hours for government offices will be reduced, while supermarkets, bars, cinemas, restaurants, casinos and other night spots would have to close between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Monday to Thursday, according to a statement from the president’s office.

Private businesses in the tropical Central American nation will also be forced to cut air-conditioning use by four hours a day, beginning Wednesday. It’s unclear how long the rationing will last, though government officials say they would reconsider on Sunday how soon they could re-open schools.

Queensland Measles case sparks statewide alert

A state-wide measles alert has been issued in Queensland after a mine worker was diagnosed with the potentially deadly virus.

Queensland Health says the central Queensland man probably caught the virus during a recent holiday in Asia and may have passed it on to colleagues.

He had contact with fellow mine workers at the Moranbah mine camp while he was contagious from April 25 to May 6, acting senior director of the communicable diseases unit Dr Stephen Lambert says.

He was in the dining room of the Grosvenor Village camp around April 29 and 30 between 6.30pm and 7.30pm (AEST).

Canada: Flood warning in Swan River

The flood threat in the western Manitoba town of Swan River may not be as bad as first thought.

"It appears this morning the river won’t be coming up to the level provincial EMO (Emergency Measures Organization) predicted," Mayor Glen McKenzie said in an interview this morning. "It looks pretty good right now."

McKenzie said the Swan River is still about a third of a metre below the bottom of the sandbag dike along Duncan Crescent, a low-lying residential street near the outskirts of town that is most at risk.

Germany warns Europe against easing reform efforts

Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann has said European countries should not ease up on reforms and resort to stimulus packages to tackle high youth unemployment as this will not result in sustainable jobs.

In comments published on Thursday, Weidmann reiterated his criticism of France's failure to stick to its deficit reduction targets, saying the euro zone's second biggest economy had a key role in maintaining the credibility of the bloc's efforts to consolidate budgets.

"Youth unemployment in some countries is indeed dramatic," Weidmann was quoted as saying by the daily Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung. "But short-term economic and spending programs and ever higher debt for following generations do not create the sustainable jobs that are urgently needed."

Ariel Castro charged in Cleveland kidnapping, Brothers Cleared

Cleveland resident Ariel Castro was charged on Wednesday with kidnapping and raping three women who were rescued from his house on Monday after nearly a decade in captivity.

Castro's two brothers Pedro and Onil, originally arrested in the case, were not charged, said Cleveland city prosecutor Victor Perez at a news conference.

The charges came as police revealed that the women, who were rescued on Monday after one of them, Amanda Berry, fled with the help of a neighbor, had not seen any previous chances to escape in nearly ten years of captivity.

"The only opportunity, after interviewing the young ladies, to escape was the other day when Amanda escaped," Cleveland Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba said at the same news conference.

Pakistani prisoner dies in India after revenge beating

A convicted Pakistani militant jailed in India died on Thursday after being beaten by another inmate in an apparent revenge attack for the death of an Indian spy prisoner, threatening already fraught relations between the nations.

The death of Sanaullah Haq, also known as Sanaullah Ranjay, came a week after an Indian farmer convicted of spying died in a Pakistani jail, which led to furious reactions in India, with opposition parties criticizing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government of going soft on its Western neighbor.

"Although it's scant consolation I'd like to offer a sincere apology to the family of Sanaullah Haq & my sympathies for their loss, Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir state where Haq had been imprisoned since 1999, wrote on Twitter on Thursday.

Eight people were killed when a fire swept through a clothing factory in Bangladesh, police and an industry association official said on Thursday, as the death toll from the collapse of another factory building two weeks ago climbed above 900.

The fire, in an industrial district of Dhaka, comes amid global attention on safety standards in Bangladesh's booming garment industry following the catastrophic collapse of Rana Plaza, on the outskirts of the city, in the world's deadliest industrial accident since the Bhopal disaster in India in 1984.

"It is not clear to us how the accident happened, but we are trying to find out the cause," Mohammad Atiqul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), told Reuters.
