100 dolphins wash up on Italian coast after being hit by killer strain of measles

Scientists believe that more than 100 dolphins washed up dead along the Italian coast were struck down by a killer strain of measles.

A total of 101 dolphin carcasses have been counted on the west coast of Italy since the beginning of the year.

All are the same species - striped dolphins which have a distinctive blue and white pattern and grow to about eight feet long. They usually live for 50 or 60 years.

The bodies have appeared on beaches spanning more than half the western coastline of Italy, from Tuscany to Calabria, as well as the island of Sicily - which suggests that the problem is not caused by humans pollutants such as oil.

Flooding closes schools, roads in central Ontario

States of emergency continue in central Ontario as flood waters continue to rise and wash out roads.

Seven cottage country communities have declared emergencies, including Bancroft, Kawartha Lakes, South Algonquin Township, Minden Hills, Markstay-Warren, Hunstville and Bracebridge. Last week, warm weather combined with more than 50 mm of rain caused waterways to rise rapidly.

In Bancroft, three schools and a children's centre were shuttered Monday, the town's website said. Officials warned the closures could continue for several more days. The town announced Monday afternoon that it has opened a reception centre at the North Hastings Community Centre for residents who have been displaced by the rising water levels. The state of emergency remains in effect but the town is "open for business," Mayor Bernice Jenkins said in a release.

Officials from South Algonquin Township said they continue to closely monitor the Galeairy Lake Dam and bridges.

New Jersey: Mystery contaminant sickens 50 at church party

An unidentified contaminant sickened about 50 people Saturday night who attended a party at a church in Dumont, N.J., NorthJersey.com reported.

Dumont Fire Chief Matthew Banta said people who attended the party, which took place at the Living Word Community Church, reported symptoms of chest pain and difficulty breathing.

Two people were taken to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, and although the cause of illness has not yet been determined, Banta said the symptoms are consistent to pepper spray exposure.

Bird Deaths: Thousands Starve Off South Coast

More than 1,000 seabirds have been washed up dead on the south coast of England, thought killed by a chemical released from ships.

Wildlife experts have been scouring the beaches of Cornwall, Devon and Dorset in case any of the affected guillemots, puffins and other bird species have survived.

An RSPCA birdlife centre has been treating hundreds of birds which have been found close to death and exhausted after their feathers became coated in a thick, sticky sludge.

Cyber Attacks On UK Businesses 'Soaring'

The number of cyber attacks hitting businesses has soared in the past year, Government-commissioned research has revealed.

The survey showed 87% of small firms - up 10% - experienced a security breach last year and 93% of large organisations had also been targeted.

The Information Security Breaches Survey, commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), found some of the attacks caused more than £1m of damage.

Affected companies experienced around 50% more attacks on average than a year ago.

Killer Robots: Rage Against The Machines

Human Rights groups have launched a campaign to put a stop to the development of what they call "killer robots" which they believe should be outlawed along with cluster bombs and land mines.

The campaign organisers are concerned that the increased use of unmanned drone attacks by the US and automatic defence systems such as the Iron Dome used by the Israelis so successfully to shoot down rockets from Gaza late last year are merely the precursors to thinking robots that could kill with impunity if programmed to do so - much like the Arnold Schwarzenegger character in the Terminator movies.

One of the campaigners, Jody Williams, said: "We're worried about machines that can be programmed, you put in a certain set of criteria, but then you set that machine free and it goes off whether it is in the air or on land or in the sea.

"I don't want a programmed machine to kill me."

'Al Qaeda Terror Plot' To Attack Train Foiled

Canadian police say they have foiled an al Qaeda-backed "major terrorist plot" to attack a passenger train on a railway line between New York and Toronto.

Two people have been arrested and charged with conspiring to carry out the attack and murder people in association with a terrorist group, police revealed at a news conference in Toronto.

The suspects - Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, and Raed Jaser, 35 - had been under surveillance since August 2012 after authorities were tipped off about one of the men.

China: Cyberattacks Are Like Nuclear Bombs

Cyberattacks could be "as serious as a nuclear bomb," according to a top Chinese general, who rejected suggestions that the Chinese military is behind cyberspying aimed at Western companies.

General Fang Fenghui, chief of staff of the People's Liberation Army, made the comments after meeting with his U.S. counterpart Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Cybersecurity was one of a number of sensitive issues covered. The Obama administration is considering options to confront Beijing over the issue, including trade sanctions, diplomatic pressure and indictments of Chinese nationals in U.S. courts.

Report: Boston Bomber Suspects had no gun licenses (One wonders where this is going...)

The two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings were not licensed to have the firearms they used in several shootouts with police on Friday, Reuters reported Sunday night.

The news that the suspects were not authorized to own firearms will likely add fuel to calls for tougher gun laws – an issue that was put on the back-burner last week after the Senate blocked the central elements of a gun-control package backed by President Obama.

Because Massachusetts state law bars handgun ownership for those younger than 21, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, age 26, was the only brother who could have obtained a license from the town of Cambridge, Mass., where he lived. But he didn't take that step, Dan Riviello, spokesman for the Cambridge Police Department, told Reuters.

"There is no record of him having a license to carry," Riviello said, according to the news service.

Flooding, barge accidents halt Mississippi River traffic

Barge shipping on the Illinois River and parts of the Mississippi River was at a standstill on Monday as flooding forced the closure of numerous locks and as crews worked to recover dozens of barges that broke free in flood-swollen currents.

The U.S. Coast Guard closed the Mississippi between river mile markers 155 and 170 near St. Louis after 114 barges broke free from a fleeting area late on Saturday and 11 of them sank.

All of the barges are accounted for and two salvage companies were working to raise the sunken barges and recover the rest.

The Coast Guard did not have an estimate for when navigation may resume.

Iran is biggest threat to nuclear pact's credibility: U.S.

Iran's nuclear program poses the greatest threat to the credibility of the global pact aimed at halting the spread of atomic weapons, a senior U.S. arms control official said on Monday.

The Islamic Republic has a "long history" of deceiving the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its nuclear enrichment program far exceeds that needed for civilian use, said Thomas Countryman, Assistant Secretary for International Security and Nonproliferation.

Two-week talks that opened in Geneva on Monday to review progress in implementing the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) were taking place in a difficult environment, he said.

Lindsay Sandiford Loses Legal Aid Bid

A British woman in jail in Bali has lost a legal battle to win funding to help her overturn her death sentence for drug smuggling.

Grandmother Lindsay Sandiford, 56, failed in her appeal over a UK Government refusal to fund her legal challenge against the penalty imposed by an Indonesian court.

Sandiford was arrested in May 2012 at Bali airport when customs officers found cocaine worth £1.6m in her luggage.

She was given the death penalty by a court in January.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev could face the death penalty after being Charged In Hospital Bed

The surviving Boston marathon bomb suspect has been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction - as he reportedly remains unable to speak because of a gunshot injury.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will also face a charge of malicious destruction of property resulting in death, the Justice Department said. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

The White House has said that as a naturalised US citizen, Tsarnaev will not be treated as an "enemy combatant", which would have involved a military tribunal. Instead he will be prosecuted through the criminal court system and is expected to appear in court on May 30.

EU governments ease Syria sanctions on oil to help rebels

European Union governments agreed on Monday to ease sanctions on Syria to allow for purchases of crude from the opposition, in hopes of throwing a financial lifeline to rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad.

The decision, taken at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, will allow European importers to buy oil from Syria, if authorized by an opposition umbrella grouping.

Up to 500 feared dead in Damascus suburb say activists

At least 109 people have been documented as killed and up to 400 more are likely to have died in an almost week-long offensive by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on a rebellious Damascus suburb, opposition activists said.

If the accounts are confirmed, the killings in the mainly Sunni Muslim suburb of Jdeidet al-Fadel would amount to one of bloodiest episodes of the two-year-old uprising against Assad. Many of the dead were civilians, the activists said.

Cinnamon Challenge: Doctors Warn Of Dangers

Doctors in America have warned that a cinnamon-eating craze popular with teenagers is potentially harmful.

The "Cinnamon Challenge" involves trying to swallow one teaspoon of cinnamon without water, often while being filmed.

Numerous videos of teenagers attempting the prank have been posted on YouTube.

But a report published in the May issue of the Pediatrics journal said 30 American youngsters had required medical treatment after ingesting the spice last year.

Cinnamon, which is made from tree bark, is a caustic substance that can cause scarring in the lungs, the report said.

Dutch police have made an arrest following a threat, posted on the internet, to carry out a shooting at a school in the city of Leiden.

Unconfirmed reports in Dutch media say a former pupil of the British School in nearby Voorschoten has been detained.

More than 20 schools were told to stay closed on Monday in response to the threat posted on internet forum 4chan.

The anonymous writer said they would shoot their teacher "and as many students as I can".

Two of the main schools, Da Vinci College and Driestar College, had police officers outside them on Monday morning, Dutch media said.

H7N9 Cases May Be Double Known Figure, Hong Kong Researchers Say

H7N9 bird flu may have infected twice as many people as the 103 cases reported, an analysis by researchers at the University of Hong Kong showed.

There may be 90 to 120 ill adults who haven’t been detected because their infections are mild, Benjamin Cowling, associate professor at the university’s public health research center, said today. The researchers’ analysis suggests risk of serious illness from the virus rises substantially with age, with more than half of reported cases age 60 or older, he said.

Flu specialists including those from the World Health Organization are investigating how people are catching the H7N9 virus, with no evidence yet of sustained human-to-human transmission. Disease trackers haven’t been able to figure out why another deadly bird flu strain known as H5N1 afflicts mostly younger people in their 20s and 30s, while H7N9 mainly targets the elderly.

“One thing that is very striking is the age distribution of the cases,” Cowling said at a briefing at the university’s medical school today. “They’re very different from the confirmed infections of H5N1.”

Nepal: Bird flu hits two places in Chitwan

CHITWAN: Bird flu has been detected in two poultry farms of Chitwan.

It was found in the farm of Laxmi Rana of Gondrang at Bharatpur-9 and that of Rajendra Hamal of Mangalpur VDC- 7.

The bird flu was confirmed, as the sample was sent for test in the Central Lab by the Bird Disease Research Laboratory, Bharatpur on April 15.

Test was delayed as Rana prohibited the entry of lab employees in the farm to acquire information after it was known that chickens died on April 8.

There were some 60,000 layers species of chickens in Rana's farm and 4,000 in the farm of Hamal.

Radioactive mud in Fukushima school Swimming pools tops 100000 becquerels

(Image provided by a teacher)

FUKUSHIMA—Radioactive cesium levels exceeding 100,000 becquerels per kilogram were measured in mud accumulated at the bottom of swimming pools at two high schools in and around Fukushima city.

Mud in the pool of a third high school in Minami-Soma, which is closer to the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, showed at least 8,000 becquerels per kilogram.

Under a special measures law, the central government must remove mud and other substances with radioactivity levels of more than 8,000 becquerels caused by the meltdowns at the plant.

The three high schools have not discharged the water from their swimming pools since the nuclear crisis started on March 11, 2011. The water has apparently blocked the spread of contamination from the mud; air radiation levels near the three school pools are almost the same as those of other locations.

“Mud under the water, even if highly contaminated, would not become an issue unless it was taken out of the water,” said Kunikazu Noguchi, an associate professor of radiation protection at Nihon University.

The Asahi Shimbun obtained the mud with the help of the three schools and teachers, and had the Citizen's Radioactivity Measuring Station (CRMS), a Fukushima-based nonprofit group, measure the radioactivity levels.

In March 2012, the CRMS tested mud collected from the pool of the high school in Fukushima. The radioactive cesium level was 65,900 becquerels, according to the results released on April 1 this year.

The prefectural government has measured radioactivity levels of water in the school pool, but not the mud. The latest results for mud from the high school swimming pool in Fukushima showed 104,100 becquerels per kilogram.

Frustration rises from rubble of deadly quake

Hundreds of survivors of a 6.6 magnitude earthquake that hit southwest China, killing nearly 200 people, pushed into traffic along a main road on Monday, waving protest signs, demanding help and shouting at police.

"We are in the open air here. No place to sleep, nothing to eat. No one is paying any attention to us," said Peng Qiong, 45, a farmer in Chaoyang village on the outskirts of Lushan, near the epicenter.

China has poured resources into Sichuan since the early Saturday quake, including 1 billion yuan ($161.9 million) from central coffers for disaster relief and compensation. About 18,000 troops are in the area.

A gang put fake bomb vests on kidnapped businessmen to raise almost £3m in ransom, police who smashed the ring have revealed.

Sixteen suspects - including the man thought to be the group's leader, who escaped from jail last year - are being held over the abduction of 21 men in France and Luxembourg.

In one case, the group used a high-class prostitute to lure six businessmen to a Paris hotel from Morocco in November 2012, with the promise of a profitable deal involving information technology products.

Second man arrested for India girl rape, chaos in parliament

Indian police arrested a second man on Monday in connection with the rape and torture of a five-year-old girl in New Delhi and parliament was adjourned twice amid an uproar about the crime which has rekindled popular fury at widespread sexual violence.

The anger echoes the response to the gang rape of a 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist on a bus on December 16. She later died of her injuries. Protesters are angry authorities have failed to prevent more such crimes.

Yet, the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) authorities
neglected the advice.
In China, an online heated debate on "aftershock" and

Barbaric cruelty to dolphins Japan tried to hide: Secret film captures use of spikes to stem blood - and cover up savage toll

It is evidence of the horrific deaths dolphins suffer at their hands that Japanese fishermen have tried to keep secret for years.

An activist has succeeded in filming the barbaric slaughter using ‘spinal spikes’ – and the footage is now set to ignite international outrage. It was shot in a cove during the notorious Taiji ‘drive-hunts’ and shows a fisherman repeatedly stabbing a metal rod into the base of a dolphin’s head behind its blowhole.

Another man then rams a wooden plug hard into the wound to prevent the sea turning red with blood, thus alerting marine conservationists.

Rise of the bomber robots: The Predator is just one of a booming arsenal of missile-laden spies. They kill indiscriminately, warns top expert, and now even the terrorists have them

Drones are used for lethal and non-lethal purposes: they can track drug smugglers, monitor borders and search for earthquake victims, and environmentalists use them to catch illegal whalers and loggers.

But the driving force behind the most sophisticated drones remains the military, who use them for spying and killing.

Their proliferation has led to thousands of deaths, the disruption of entire communities and increased political instability.

The US example of sending drones wherever it wants and killing whoever it wants on the basis of secret information is leading to a world of lawlessness.

Innocent lives are snuffed out without a trace of accountability. Drones don’t give their targets a chance to surrender. They simply pulverise them.

Thousands take to streets of Paris to protest against legalisation of gay marriage set to pass this week

Thousands of opponents of gay marriage marched through Paris yesterday in a last-ditch protest before a law allowing same-sex union and adoption is passed tomorrow.

About 50,000, most of them older people and families with children, waving pink and blue flags massed behind a banner reading: ‘All born of a mum and a dad.’

Although it ended peacefully, riot police had been on standby after a series of violent demonstrations outside the French parliament earlier this month. Police had to use tear gas when far-Right youths pelted them with stones and bottles.

On Thursday there were 75 arrests at another demonstration in Paris.

Over half of Guantanamo Bay prisoners on hunger strike as number increases to 84

Over half of all detainees at the US-run Guantanamo Bay military prison are now taking part in a hunger strike, with many being force-fed, a US military spokesman confirmed today.

The number of prisoners on hunger strike has risen to 84, an increase of 32 since last Wednesday, with 16 now receiving “enteral feedings,” a process involving being force-fed via tubes.

Inmates at the facility, which houses 166 detainees, have been refusing food since 6 February, when they claim prison officials searched their Korans for contraband, an act they considered to be religious desecration. Officials denied mishandling the Islamic holy book. Some prisoners, including Shaker Aamer, the last British inmate being held there, have since said they are continuing the strike in protest against their incarceration at Guantanamo for 11 years without charge or trial.

'Naive' Miliband is attacked by his own party over secret George Galloway meeting

Ed Miliband last night faced an angry backlash from Labour MPs after it emerged he held a secret meeting with George Galloway, who was thrown out of the party ten years ago.

The Labour leader invited Respect MP Mr Galloway to his Commons office, where they had a ‘cordial and friendly conversation’ for nearly an hour.

It has sparked rumours that Mr Miliband is considering allowing Mr Galloway to rejoin the party.

Myanmar Accused of Ethnic Cleansing as EU Meets on Sanctions

Human Rights Watch accused Myanmar’s government of ethnic cleansing in displacing more than 125,000 Rohingya Muslims as European Union diplomats meet to decide whether to lift sanctions on the country.

Government authorities destroyed mosques, conducted violent mass arrests, blocked aid to displaced Muslims and dumped bodies in mass graves since sectarian violence began last June, the New York-based group said in a 153-page report released today. Ye Htut, a spokesman for President Thein Sein, and Zaw Htay, a director in the president’s office, didn’t answer calls to their mobile phones.

“The Burmese government engaged in a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya that continues today through the denial of aid and restrictions on movement,” Phil Robertson, the group’s deputy Asia director, said in a statement. “The government needs to put an immediate stop to the abuses and hold the perpetrators accountable or it will be responsible for further violence against ethnic and religious minorities.”

500 business leaders tell David Cameron to negotiate a better deal with Europe....Notice how the li....Promise for a EU referendum has been pushed to the END of 2017

David Cameron has pledged to claw back powers and then offer voters a choice of staying in the European Union in a referendum by the end of 2017, if the Conservatives are returned to power at the next election.

The new Business for Britain campaign backed the Prime Minister’s approach to renegotiation and called for a cross-party “national drive to renegotiate the terms of Britain’s membership of the EU”.

The campaign is planning to open regional offices across the UK, and run high profile advertising campaigns over the next few years. It is hoping to come up with red lines ahead of next summer's European elections.

FBI's handling of Boston suspect comes under scrutiny

U.S. lawmakers asked on Sunday why the FBI had failed to spot the danger from one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, and they complained it was one of a series of cases in which someone the agency had investigated had later taken part in attacks.

House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul wrote to the FBI and other officials asking why Tamerlan Tsarnaev did not raise suspicions after Russia asked the bureau to investigate him two years ago.

"Because if he was on the radar and they let him go, he's on the Russians' radar, why wasn't a flag put on him, some sort of customs flag?," McCaul, a Texas Republican, said on CNN's "State of the Union" program. "And I'd like to know what intelligence Russia has on him as well."

The FBI interviewed Tsarnaev, the elder of two ethnic Chechen brothers suspected in the Boston bombing, in 2011 shortly after Russia's Federal Security Service asked the agency to look into him as a possible Islamist radical who might soon travel to Russia.

Schools in Leiden, Netherlands Closed due to Threats Made

Police on Sunday received a report of a possible shooting which would take place in Leiden. By order of the police and the municipality it was decided all secondary and secondary vocational schools in the city to remain closed Monday.

The police attended high schools in Leiden Monday morning. At the Driestar College and the Da Vinci College police were stationed before 7 am

About twenty secondary schools are closed, says Mayor Henri Lenferink.

The threat was made by an unknown person on the internet who left a threatening message which talks about a possible shooting that will take place within days. "Given the seriousness of the threat it was decided to take no chances," said the police report.

The message on the website 4chan.org, confirms the city of Leiden. The author of the post writes that he is planning to shoot. "His teacher and as many students as possible" - '' I will have a note with me when I go into the school, with an explanation about why I do this.''
