Police: Shots fired at Denver pot holiday gathering

Gunfire erupted at a Denver pot celebration Saturday, injuring two people and scattering a crowd of thousands at a downtown park after they had just marked the first 4/20 counterculture holiday since the state legalized marijuana.

The man and woman who were shot were expected to survive, and police were looking for one or two suspects, said Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

Witnesses described a scene in which a jovial atmosphere quickly turned to one of panic just before 5 p.m. Several thought firecrackers were being set off, then a man fell bleeding, his dog also shot.

Doctor: Dead Boston bomb suspect had wounds 'head to toe'

A doctor involved in treating the Boston Marathon bombing suspect who died in a gunbattle with police says he had injuries head to toe and all limbs intact when he arrived at the hospital.

Dr. David Schoenfeld said 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev was unconscious and had so many penetrating wounds when he arrived at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center early Friday that it isn't clear which ones killed him, and a medical examiner will have to determine the cause of death.

The second bombing suspect, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was in serious condition at the same hospital after his capture Friday night. The FBI has not allowed hospital officials to say any more about his wounds or condition.

Apple records and keeps users' Siri queries for up to 2 years

Siri isn't just a pretty voice with the answers. It's also been recording and keeping all the questions users ask.

Exactly what the voice assistant does with the data isn't clear, but Apple confirmed that it keeps users' questions for up to two years. Siri, which needs to be connected to the Internet to function, sends all of its users' queries to Apple.

Apple revealed the information after Wired posted an article this week raising the question and highlighting the fact that the privacy statement for Siri wasn't very clear about how long that information is kept or what would be done with it.

Technically Apple keeps Siri user data for six months, associating that data with the user. After that time, the company will disassociate users from the data, meaning it will remove any identifiers for who input that particular query into Siri. But for the next 18 months, Apple said, it keeps the disassociated data for the sake of product testing and improvement purposes.

Boston Bombing B.S. continues piling up, Police: "The older brother died when we were handcuffing him and his younger brother tried to run over us with a car, hitting him instead"

The police chief, Edward Deveau, describes how cops nearly apprehended the older suspect, and were placing handcuffs on him in the middle of the street Thursday night, when the younger suspect came at officers in a carjacked SUV. The cops were able "to dive out of the way," and the younger suspect then continued to drive directly over his brother and dragging him through the street. That's how the older suspect died, according to the police chief.

The younger suspect eventually dumped the SUV and ran into the darkness of the night, according to the police chief. It took nearly 18 hours and massive manhunt to find the younger suspect. He gave himself up after a 20-minute negotiation with the FBI, he said, but not before the suspect fired more rounds at the authorities.

China deploys anti-aircraft carrier missile off Taiwan

China has deployed near Taiwan a powerful missile designed to take out US aircraft carriers as Beijing strengthens its ability to prevent US forces from aiding Taiwan during potential conflict.

The deployment of the DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missile comes as China’s army develops greater long-range and offensive capabilities. Those advances pose a challenge to US forces as Washington looks to build up its military presence in east Asia to balance out China’s rising might.

The DF-21D missile is a particular worry for Taiwan as it relies on US forces to back it up against threats from the mainland, which has not renounced the use of force to take the island it regards as part of its territory.

Syria opposition must distance itself from "terrorists:" Germany

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said on Saturday the Syrian opposition must distance itself from extremist forces and he said Germany was skeptical about supplying weapons to the rebels.

"We expect from the opposition that they clearly distance themselves in Syria from terrorist and extremist forces," Westerwelle told reporters in Istanbul at a meeting of Syrian opposition leaders and their international backers.

"We are skeptical as the German government when it comes to delivering weapons because we are concerned that weapons could fall into the wrong, namely extremist, hands, but it is a matter that must now be discussed in the European Union."

Syria opposition voices frustration with international backers

Syrian opposition figures voiced frustration with their international backers on Saturday in the face of reluctance from some to supply the rebels with weapons and a call for them to distance themselves from extremist forces.

Speaking at a meeting of the Friends of Syria in Istanbul, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Germany was skeptical about supplying weapons to the rebels but said the subject should be discussed by the European Union.

One senior opposition figure said arms were already being sent from some countries but acknowledging this at the meeting would provide cover for countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar to openly help the rebels.

Surviving Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had time to tweet on the run (Perhaps he's sharing wifi with Elisa Lam?)

After killing 3 and wounding 180, the surviving brother tweets, 'Ain’t no love in the heart of the city,” a line from rapper Jay-Z. He adds, chillingly, 'stay safe people.'

Between planting bombs and being on the lam, he somehow found time to tweet.

Boston bombing “Suspect 2,” identified by police as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, took to Twitter about a dozen times since Monday’s deadly twin blasts killed three people and injured more than 180 others.

More than 1,000 in northern Illinois evacuated after barge hits levee

Officials say they've evacuated as many as 1,500 residents of the northern Illinois community of Marseilles after a possible levee break on the nearby Illinois River.

Connie Brooks of the La Salle County Emergency Management Agency says the residents, including those in a nursing home, were evacuated late Thursday night after nine barges broke free of a tugboat and struck the levee. She says there is expected to be more flooding in the community of 5,100 residents southwest of Joliet when the river crests sometime Friday afternoon but that she did not expect that to prompt any more evacuations.

She says there were no reports of any injuries.

Tritium found in ground water around Dungeness nuclear plant

An investigation has been launched to find the source of the leak, which has seen levels of tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen, rise above normal.

Tritium is a waste product from the processing of nuclear fuels and the storage of spent fuel.

The Office of the Nuclear Regulator, which is part of the Health and Safety Executive, said inspectors had found elevated tritium concentrations during routine water monitoring in three boreholes around the site in Kent since October 2012.

Osborne launches legal challenge against EU over financial transactions tax

The Chancellor, George Osborne is attempting to defend the City of London by beginning legal proceedings against the European Union over its plans to impose a financial transactions tax.

Mr Osborne confirmed that an application had been lodged at the European Court of Justice to challenge the decision which allows 11 members of the European Union to go ahead with plans to introduce the tax.

Although the UK will not sign up to the tax, it would still affect UK companies. Mr Osborne argues that with London as the top financial centre in Europe, the UK will be unfairly penalised.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in serious condition after dramatic capture

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the 19-year-old who was arrested Friday night after a massive 24-hour-long manhunt that paralyzed Boston, remains in serious condition on Saturday morning, unable to be questioned on his connection to the twin Boston Marathon bombings.

Tsarnaev was arrested around 8:45 ET after a resident of Watertown, just outside of Boston, noticed a trail of blood in a boat parked in his backyard. The man lifted the tarp and found the college student holed up in the boat.

Officials said a special interrogation team will question Tsarnaev without reading his Miranda rights, using a special public safety exception in circumstances of immediate public danger.

Obama acts to strengthen gun background check system

President Barack Obama, moving swiftly after the Senate rejected a measure to expand background checks for gun buyers, acted on Friday to patch holes in the existing database dealers use to ensure they are not selling weapons to criminals or the mentally ill.

The Health and Human Services Department will issue a formal proposal on Friday to make sure one of its privacy laws does not prevent states from reporting information to the background check system.

"While this background check system is the most efficient and effective way to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals, it is only as effective as the information that is available to it," an administration official said.

India: Protests build in New Delhi after child rape

Angry crowds demonstrated in India's capital on Saturday after a five-year-old girl was allegedly raped, tortured and kept in captivity for 40 hours, reviving memories of last December's brutal assault on a woman that shook the country.

Police arrested a man they accuse of the attack from the eastern state of Bihar, and brought him back to New Delhi for interrogation. Doctors say the girl suffered severe injuries and bruising, including to her neck and genitalia.

Protests that began on Friday grew more intense after video footage showed a policeman slapping a woman protester, and following reports that investigators had offered the victim's family 2,000 rupees ($37) not to file a case.

It was the second case of alleged rape in 48 hours to trigger protests and heavy-handed policing, after hundreds of people fought police in the city of Aligarh, 135 km (83 miles) from Delhi on Thursday. One policeman was filmed hitting an old woman hard with a club in the protest.

6.6 Magnitude Earthquake China: 156 dead, more than 5,500 injured

A strong 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit a remote, mostly rural and mountainous area of southwestern China's Sichuan province on Saturday, killing at least 156 people and injuring about 5,500 close to where a big quake killed almost 70,000 people in 2008.

The earthquake, China's worst in three years, occurred at 8.02 a.m. (0002 GMT) in Lushan county near Ya'an city and the epicenter had a depth of 12 km (7.5 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was felt by residents in neighboring provinces and in the provincial capital of Chengdu, causing many people to rush out of buildings, according to accounts on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo microblogging service.

State media said 156 people had been confirmed dead with more than 5,500 injured.
