Backing for EU is wafer thin, says PM

DAVID Cameron has warned public support for Britain's continued membership of the EU is "wafer thin" as he prepares for a series of crucial meetings with leaders in three European capitals to press the case for reform.

The Prime Minister sent the message to EU leaders as he defended his promise to hold an in-or-out referendum on Britain's membership in 2017 if the Tories win the next election.

Mr Cameron admitted previous broken promises over referendums on the EU had eroded support.

Hundreds evacuated in Mexico due to fire at pesticide plant

Mexico City, Apr 7 (EFE).- At least 300 people were evacuated early Sunday in Atitalaquia, a city in central Mexico, due to a fire at a pesiticide plant that unleashed a "toxic cloud," the Hidalgo state emergency management office said.

Emergencies Ministry Denies Meteor Fall in North-West Russia

Russia’s Emergencies Ministry rejected media reports on Sunday that a new meteorite had crashed in the country’s northwest.

Some media reports said on Sunday eye-witnesses saw the fall of an unidentified flying object near the town of Tosno in the Leningrad Region.

“No facts of the fall of a meteorite have been confirmed,” the ministry’s spokeswoman said.

Rescuers from the Emergencies Ministry went to the site of the presumed meteor crash after a call by eye-witnesses but did not find anything, she said.

Egypt: Deadly Clashes After Coptic Funeral

One person has died and more than 60 others have been injured in clashes outside Cairo's Coptic cathedral following a funeral.

The memorial service at the cathedral, in the central Cairo neighbourhood of Abbassiya, was being held for four Christians who were killed in sectarian clashes on Friday.

Mourners, who were chanting against the Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, were pelted with stones and bottles by residents of the area as they left the funeral.

The Copts inside the church complex hurled objects back at the rows of Abbassiya residents.

North Korea: 'Signs' Nuclear Test Being Prepared

North Korea is showing "signs" it is preparing to carry out a fourth nuclear test, a South Korean minister has said.

Amid media reports of increased activity at the North's main atomic test site, Ryoo Kihl-Jae told parliament: "There are such signs."

The minister declined to comment further.

Radiation from Fukushima, Japan, investigated for hundreds of dead and dying sea lion pups in California

Radiation from Japan’s nuclear disaster is being looked at as one possible cause for what some experts are declaring an “unusual mortality event” after hundreds of ailing sea lion pups washed ashore in Southern California.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has assembled a team that includes biologists, veterinarians and public health officials, among others.

The team will investigate why so many sick and dying sea lions have turned up on the beaches of Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Diego counties.

Since Jan. 1, more than 900 sea lions have been admitted to rehabilitation facilities, far outpacing historical stranding rates for 2008 to 2012, according to NOAA.

William Strickland: Remember the old man shot in the back by his grandson six times on his way to kidney dialysis? Well, the grandma orchestrated it all and told the boy to do it.

Bond for a 64-year-old woman who allegedly paid her grandson to kill her husband was set at $500,000 Saturday.

Janet Strickland of Chicago was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of armed robbery with a firearm after her husband was fatally shot in the gangway near his home on the Far South Side while on his way to dialysis, police said.

William Strickland, 72, was shot six times in the back on March 2 while on his way to dialysis treatment in what police suspected to be a robbery.

Janet Strickland was reportedly not in court for her hearing Saturday because she was receiving treatment for a lung disease, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Janet Strickland allegedly commissioned her grandson to kill her husband, and watched as he did so before stealing a casino bag with money in it as her husband lied shot on the street, according to the Sun-Times.

Janet Strickland reportedly used the stolen money to take her grandson on a shopping spree.

China confident it can control bird flu outbreak

Seoul on high alert over N Korea threat

The crisis over North Korean belligerence deepened on Sunday as officials in Washington and Seoul warned that Pyongyang could act on its threats to launch a missile this week, ahead of the anniversary of founding president Kim Il-sung’s birthday on April 15.

The former leader’s birthday is usually marked with great fanfare, sometimes including demonstrations of military might, and North Korea often chooses significant dates for provocations such as missile tests.

China warns against "troublemaking" on Korean peninsula

China warned against "troublemaking" on its doorstep, in an apparent rebuke to North Korea, and the United States said it was postponing a missile test to help calm high tension on the divided Korean peninsula.

The North, led by 30-year-old Kim Jong-un, has been issuing vitriolic threats of war against the United States and U.S.-backed South Korea since the United Nations imposed sanctions in response to its third nuclear weapon test in February.

Pyongyang's anger appears heightened by U.S.-South Korean joint military exercises. But most analysts say it has no intention of starting a conflict that would bring its own destruction and instead is out to wring concessions from a nervous international community.

North Korea Threat 'Very Serious', Says Hague

Foreign Secretary William Hague has warned that the international community must unite and treat the threat posed by North Korea "very seriously".

Mr Hague told Sky's Murnaghan show that there was a danger of "miscalculation" as Kim Jong-Un's bellicose statements ratchet up tensions on the Korean peninsula.

He was speaking after an American defence official revealed the US has delayed the testing of an intercontinental ballistic missile in an effort to defuse the situation.

European Commission under fire over €22m Real Madrid illegal state aid deal

Pressure grew yesterday on the European Commission to reach a decision on their investigation over whether Real Madrid received illegal state aid in a land deal that will let them significantly improve the Bernabeu stadium's profitability.

The EC competition office confirmed The Independent's report that the Spanish club is subject to an investigation into a property deal with Madrid city council in which a piece of land acquired by the club for €421,000 was subsequently sold back to the council for €22.7m.

Instead of the payment, Real received land around the Bernabeu on which they plan to build a hotel and shopping mall complex as well as putting a roof on the stadium with lucrative naming rights.

Amnesty International slams EU's treatment of Roma community

In a report released Sunday on the eve of the International Roma Day (April 8), Amnesty urged the 27-member bloc to impose sanctions on the member states that refuse to halt their illegal practices against the Roma.

"More must be done to ensure that the principles of equality, non-discrimination and respect for human dignity are more than empty words. EU member states must respect international and EU anti-discrimination legislation," said Amnesty International.

The report highlights widespread discrimination against the Roma population living in the EU, including segregation in education, forced evictions and a lack of access to safe water.

In addition, prejudice towards the largest ethnic minority in Europe “remains strong,” with violent attacks against them.

Fukushima nuclear plant finds second tank leak

Radioactive water has apparently leaked from another underground storage tank at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co said on Sunday.

The utility, known as Tepco, said the volume of the latest leakage is believed to be small. On Saturday, it said as much as 120 tons of radioactive water may have leaked from another nearby storage tank.
The plant's seven storage tanks are lined with water proof sheets meant to keep the contaminated water from leaking into the soil. The power company has faced a range of problems with leaks and with the plant's cooling system.

Tepco said on Friday it lost the ability to cool radioactive fuel rods in one of the plant's reactors for about three hours, the second cooling system failure at the plant in three weeks.

North Korean embassies remain staffed despite safety fears

N.Korea shows no sign of repositioning forces: Britain

North Korea is showing no signs of gearing up for "all-out conflict" by repositioning its armed forces, despite tensions on the Korean peninsula, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Sunday.

"We haven't seen the repositioning of forces or the redeployment of ground forces that one might see in a period prior to a military assault or to an all-out conflict. That's why I say it's important to keep calm as well as to be firm and united about this," Hague told BBC television.

Manatee deaths rise even as toxic algae ebbs

A deadly algae bloom that killed a record number of manatees has dissipated, though the death toll for the endangered sea mammals continues to rise, Florida wildlife officials said on Thursday.

Red Tide has killed 241 manatees this year as of Wednesday, said Kevin Baxter, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida. The figure already surpasses the highest number of Red Tide manatee deaths on record in Florida - 151 in 1996.

This year's fatalities from Red Tide will likely continue into the spring because the algae bloom's deadly toxins have settled on the sea grasses that the manatees eat, Baxter said.

Spaniards lose patience with rotten institutions

When a corruption scandal hit Spain's ruling party earlier this year, attention turned to the Accounts Tribunal, an obscure body that audits public spending.

Surely this independent institution, with an annual budget of $78 million and 800 workers, could shed light on allegations in the media that a former treasurer for the People's Party had run a slush fund from party headquarters.

It soon emerged, however, that the watchdog lacked teeth.

North Korea crisis: UK's Hague calls for calm amid tensions

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has called for calm over the North Korean crisis, despite the "paranoid rhetoric" emanating from Pyongyang.

"We have to be concerned about the danger of miscalculation by the North Korean regime," Mr Hague said.

"But we should remain calm," he said, adding North Korea was trying to justify militarisation of its society by "ramping up" external threats.

North Korea has made a series of direct threats against the US and South Korea.

How the CIA agreed to assassinate one of Pakistan's enemies to open the way for drone strikes

The CIA allegedly negotiated with Pakistani intelligence to kill a Pakistan state enemy in exchange for the U.S. receiving access to the country's airspace for the start of their controversial drone campaign.

New York Times national security correspondent Mark Mazzetti suggests in his new book that the CIA
agreed to a secret deal with Pakistan to execute a drone attack in June 2004 that killed Nek Muhammad, a Pashtun tribesman in Waziristan.

That operation served as an initiation test of sorts and allowed the CIA drone program.

Rights concerns overshadow trade ties on Putin's European trip....hypocrites!

Image: This is how Europe deals with activists

Growing Western concerns about Vladimir Putin's record on human rights and democracy could mean a chilly reception for the Russian president on a trip to Germany and the Netherlands, Moscow's biggest trade partners in Europe.

The nations need Russia for energy and as a market for exports ranging from Volkswagen Touaregs to tulips, but are uneasy about the influence its oil and gas give it and about Putin's treatment of opponents and activists in his new Kremlin term.

A wave of state inspections of foreign-funded non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Russia, including two German think-tanks, has drawn warnings from Berlin and sharp criticism from the European Union.

Paris Brown: Is this foul-mouthed, self-obsessed Twitter teen really the future of British policing?

Paris Brown, 17, posted violent, racist and anti-gay comments on Twitter - along with foul-mouthed rants boasting about her sex life and drug-taking. She was appointed last week to the £15,000 taxpayer-funded post to represent young people’s views on policing. But politicians last night insisted that her position was untenable after her disgusting outbursts were revealed by The Mail On Sunday. In one she appears to condone drug-taking, revealing: 'I really wanna make a batch of hash brownies.' Elsewhere she complains: 'Worst part about being single is coming from a party/night out horny as f*** and having to sleep alone.'

Bird flu outbreak shuts China markets

Nanjing became the third city in China to suspend live poultry trading in the wake of an unusual strain of bird flu that has so far killed six people in the country, state-run media outlet Xinhua reported Saturday
Jiangsu's provincial capital of Nanjing joined Shanghai and Zhejiang's provincial capital of Hangzhou in shuttering the markets, Xinhua said.

Four deaths occurred in Shanghai and two in Zhejiang, the agency said.

Chinese authorities have killed more than 20,000 birds from a live-poultry trading zone in Shanghai in an effort to deal with the issue.

Bangladesh Islamists rally for blasphemy law

Tens of thousands of radical Muslims marched toward the capital on Saturday to demand laws to target bloggers they said denigrated Islam and the Prophet Mohammed.

The bloggers initiated a recent sit-in at Shahbagh Square demanding the death penalty for people involved in war crimes perpetrated more than four decades ago. Saturday's marchers termed them atheists who should be brought to justice for blasphemy.

'Accidental' war with North Korea?

What if war is triggered by accident or some kind of miscalculation on the Korean peninsula?

This is a possibility that has provoked worry, analysis and preparations for more than 50 years. The recent bellicose rhetoric from the young, unproven leader of North Korea raises this possibility to a new height. What precisely is the risk, and what should be done about it?

The angry rhetoric of Kim Jong Un has set a record for extremism. And yet, going all the way back to the negotiating tactics used in the Korean War, the North has used an extreme, abusive and contradictory style.

Anything conceded to them was taken, but they conceded nothing. Anything up for negotiation was met with ever heightening demands. Every offer of compromise was met with an angry rhetoric of denial. Repeated rounds or negotiations over the succeeding decades have seen little change. And their public rhetoric has always been harsh and hyperbolic.

Seoul believes Kim may test a missile this week

South Korea's government said Sunday it believes North Korea may test a missile around April 10, citing as an indicator Pyongyang's push for workers to leave the Kaesong Industrial Complex by then.

Seoul "is on military readiness posture," said South Korea's Blue House spokeswoman Kim Haeng in a briefing. She said national security chief Kim Jang-soo also based the assessment on North Korea's hint to foreign diplomats in Pyongyang to send personnel out of the country.

The Blue House is the office and residence of South Korea's president, similar to the White House in the United States.

Afghan attacks kill U.S. diplomat, soldiers, others

A car bomb blast killed five Americans, including three U.S. soldiers and a young diplomat, on Saturday, while an American civilian died in a separate attack in the east.

The diplomat and other Americans were in a convoy of vehicles in Zabul province when the blast occurred, Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement.

The soldiers and the diplomat died in the blast along with a civilian employee of the Defense Department and Afghan civilians, Kerry said. His statement gave no overall death toll.

China asks North Korea to ensure safety of its nationals

China deplored rising tension on the Korean peninsula on Sunday but said its embassy was operating normally in the North Korean capital and it asked authorities there to ensure its diplomats and other citizens were kept safe.

North Korea, angry about new U.N. sanctions imposed for its third nuclear weapon test in February, has made increasingly strident warnings of an imminent war with South Korea and the United States.

The United States, keen to avoid action that could provoke the North, on Saturday postponed a long-scheduled missile test in California.

Five die in Christian-Muslim clashes in Egypt

Five Egyptians were killed and eight wounded in clashes between Christians and Muslims in a town near Cairo, security sources said on Saturday, in some of the worst sectarian violence in Egypt for months.

Christian-Muslim confrontations have increased in Muslim-majority Egypt since the overthrow of former president Hosni Mubarak in 2011 gave freer rein to hardline Islamists repressed under his rule.

China Bird Flu: More samples tested H7N9 positive in Shanghai

China's agricultural authorities said Friday the infectious H7N9 virus has been detected in another 19 samples collected at the same marketplace in Shanghai, as the country reported its sixth death from the avian flu infection.

Eight of the 19 samples were collected from seven chickens and the surroundings at the same marketplace where the strain of the H7N9 virus was detected in a pigeon sample on Thursday, according to the test results by the national avian flu reference laboratory under the Ministry of Agriculture.

The other samples containing the deadly H7N9 virus were collected from two marketplaces selling agricultural products in the neighboring Minhang District of Shanghai.

120 Tons of Radioactive Water Leak from Fukushima

About 120 tons of radioactive water leaked from the disaster-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in northern Japan, the plant’s operator said on Saturday.

The water came from one of the seven underground reservoir tanks storing water for cooling Fukushima's reactors, the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said in a statement.

TEPCO did not say what caused the leak or when did it appear, but said it assumed “that there is no leakage to the ocean since there is no drainage ditch near the reservoir.” The tank is located abtout 800 meters from the sea.

The whole amount of radioactivity in the leaked water is estimated at about 710 gigabecquerel, the company said.

Magic Mushroom Depression Trials Stalled

A trial that could lead to the use of magic mushroom treatments for depression has been stalled because of "absurd" regulations restricting the use of illegal drugs in research, it has been claimed.

Study leader Professor David Nutt, who was controversially sacked from his role as the Government's chief drug adviser in 2009, says "archaic" rules obstructing scientific progress should be abolished.

His team at Imperial College London has uncovered evidence that the hallucinogen psilocybin may combat severe depression which resists conventional treatment.

North Korea: US Missile Test Delayed Amid Row

The US has delayed the testing of an intercontinental ballistic missile over the growing tensions with North Korea, according to a defence official.

A Pentagon source said the Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel decided to postpone the long-planned Minuteman 3 launch until next month because of concerns it would exacerbate the crisis.

North Korea's military warned this week it was authorised to attack the US using "smaller, lighter and diversified" nuclear weapons.
