Saudi Criminal 'Sentenced To Be Paralysed'

A man in Saudi Arabia is waiting to be forcibly paralysed in punishment for a crime which left his victim in a wheelchair, it has emerged.

When he was 14, Ali al Khawaher stabbed a friend in the spine, paralysing him from the waist down, Amnesty International said.

The London-based human rights group said Mr al Khawaher, now 24, has spent 10 years in jail waiting to be paralysed surgically unless his family pays one million Saudi riyals (£180,000) to the victim.

Coach Mike Rice Fired Over 'Abuse' Video

A US basketball coach has been sacked after amateur footage emerged of him using gay slurs and apparently manhandling and throwing balls at players during training.

Mike Rice was dismissed amid mounting criticism following three largely unsuccessful seasons in charge of the side from New Jersey's Rutgers University.

The university's athletic director Tim Pernetti had hired independent investigators to analyse the video after being given a copy last November by a former employee.

China: Third death from H7N9 bird flu

A third person has died from H7N9 bird flu in China as the total number of confirmed cases rose to nine and concerns were raised that the virus might have mutated to infect other animals and humans more readily.

The latest victim was a 38-year-old cook who fell ill early in March while working in the province of Jiangsu, where five of the other cases were found, authorities said. He died in hospital in on 27 March and a positive test for H7N9 flu came back on Wednesday.

Chinese authorities have said there is no evidence the strain spreads easily between humans but experts say it seems to move through poultry without making them sick, making it hard to track, and possesses genetic markers that indicate it is infectious to people.

Argentina Floods: Dozens Die As Rain Continues

At least 46 died on Wednesday in and around the city of La Plata. Six deaths were reported a day earlier in Argentina's capital.

Many people climbed onto their roofs in the pouring rain after storm sewers flooded forcing water into houses.

"It started to rain really hard in the evening, and began to flood," Augustina Garcia Orsi, a 25-year-old student, said.

North Korea Army: 'War Could Break Out Today'

The North Korean military says it has "ratified" a merciless attack against the United States, potentially involving a "cutting-edge" nuclear strike.

"The moment of explosion is approaching fast," the army said in a statement on state news agency KCNA.

War could break out "today or tomorrow," the statement said, quoting a spokesman for the General Staff of the Korean People's Army.

Air Pollution Accounting for 15 Percent of Deaths in China (Second Korean War, the other 85)

According to the April 2 edition of Chinese daily newspaper the 21st Century Business Herald, in the year 2010 an incredible 1.23 million people lost their lives across China due to air pollution-related illnesses. The number accounts for 15 percent of total deaths recorded in the country for 2010. The information was revealed by a study group at Tsinghua University on March 31.

Experts report pollutants such as those in the form of micro-particulate matter (particles smaller than 2.5 micro meters) enter the blood every time they are inhaled, causing damage to the respiratory system as well as cerebral and heart ailments.

Toward the end of last year through the beginning of this year, a dense haze containing toxic substances covered up to 25 percent of the Chinese mainland, affecting close to half the country’s population, or 600 million people. The number of people who developed air pollution-related diseases was 20-30 percent greater compared to previous years.

North Korea approves "merciless" Nuclear Strikes on US

The North Korean army said Thursday it had final approval to launch "merciless" military strikes on the United States, involving the possible use of "cutting-edge" nuclear weapons.

In a statement published by the official KCNA news agency, the General Staff of the Korean People's Army (KPA) said it was formally informing Washington that reckless US threats would be "smashed by... cutting-edge smaller, lighter and diversified nuclear strike means".

"The merciless operation of (our) revolutionary armed forces in this regard has been finally examined and ratified," the statement said.

North Korea had threatened a "pre-emptive" nuclear strike against the United States a month ago, and last week the supreme army command ordered its strategic rocket units to combat status for strikes on the US mainland and US bases in Guam and Hawaii.

U.S. sends missile defenses to Guam over North Korea threat

The Pentagon said on Wednesday it was sending an advanced ballistic missile defense system to Guam in the coming weeks, as U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel cited a "real and clear" danger from North Korea.

North Korea has singled out U.S. military bases in Guam, a U.S. territory in the Pacific, and Hawaii among its potential targets in threats in recent weeks that have put the Korean peninsula on edge and triggered a change in the U.S. defense posture and missile defense planning.

"Some of the actions they've taken over the last few weeks, present a real and clear danger," Hagel told an audience at the National Defense University in Washington.

Dark Matter: Space Station Project Finds Evidence

A machine spinning around the globe aboard the International Space Station has provided the first glimpse of what could be dark matter, the mysterious building block that helps hold the cosmos together.

The £1.3bn Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), which was attached to the outside of the station two years ago, is designed to help explain what makes up dark matter, which has never before been directly observed.

International scientists said the first results seem to indicate "evidence of a new physics phenomena" that could be dark matter.

North Korea Poses 'Real, Clear Danger To US'

North Korea's rhetoric poses a "real and clear danger" to America as well as its allies South Korea and Japan, said US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel.

The US is doing all it can to defuse the situation, Mr Hagel told an audience at the National Defence University.

Mr Hagel said there is a path to peace on the troubled Korean peninsula, but it does not include making nuclear threats or taking provocative actions.

His comments come as tensions continue to rise between North and South Korea, triggering a show of military strength by the US in the surrounding skies and waters.

CHINESE MILITARY BUILD UP ON BORDER WITH NK CONTINUES: TANK COLUMNS, ARMOURED PERSONNEL CARRIERS MASSING

China continued moving tanks and armored vehicles and flying flights near North Korea this week as part of a military buildup in the northeastern part of the country that U.S. officials say is related to the crisis with North Korea.

The Obama administration, meanwhile, sought to play down the Chinese military buildup along the border with Beijing’s fraternal communist ally despite the growing danger of conflict following unprecedented threats by Pyongyang to attack the United States and South Korea with nuclear weapons.

Damascus violence forces the resolute to flee

A new exodus is flowing from Syria as fighting edges closer to the heart of Damascus - those who swore they would never flee are selling their belongings to escape a battle now raging on their doorsteps.

Many Syrians in the capital had long asserted that the uprising-turned-civil war would not breach the city center. Others insisted they would stay, no matter the consequences.

But fear has begun to grip even the most resolute residents.

Mali insurgency endangers French pull-out plan......What happened to March?

France wants to cut its forces in Mali sharply by the year-end and is urging its ex-colony to hold elections in July, but an Islamist insurgency is threatening that timetable.

Many people in northern Mali who lived under the rebels' brutal form of Islamic law last year are apprehensive about French plans to leave just 1,000 of the current 4,000 troops in the country by December, with U.N. peacekeepers filling the gap.

"The Islamists are waiting for the French to leave to open the gates to hell. Let's hope the U.N. will take over quickly because the Malian army alone cannot face the terrorism threat," said Alhassane Maîga, a teacher in the ancient trading post of Timbuktu.

Special Report: How the Fed fueled an explosion in subprime auto loans

Thanks largely to the U.S. Federal Reserve, Jeffrey Nelson was able to put up a shotgun as down payment on a car.

Money was tight last year for the school-bus driver and neighborhood constable in Jasper, Alabama, a beaten-down town of 14,000 people. One car had already been repossessed. Medical bills were piling up.

And still, though Nelson's credit history was an unhappy one, local car dealer Maloy Chrysler Dodge Jeep had no problem arranging a $10,294 loan from Wall Street-backed subprime lender Exeter Finance Corp so Nelson and his wife could buy a charcoal gray 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara.

It's the Federal Reserve that's made it all possible.

MONEY, MONEY EVERYWHERE

In its efforts to jumpstart the economy, the U.S. central bank has undertaken since November 2008 three rounds of bond-buying and cut short-term interest rates effectively to zero. The purchases of mostly Treasury and mortgage securities - known as quantitative easing and nicknamed QE1, QE2 and QE3 - have injected trillions of dollars into the financial system.

The Fed isn't alone. Central banks from Tokyo to Frankfurt to London are running their printing presses overtime. The heavily indebted advanced economies are trying to reflate their way out of the prolonged bout of crisis and recession that crystallized with the collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc in 2008. That crisis, of course, followed a nearly decade-long cycle of easy money and exotic financial products that itself began with the collapse of the tech-mania bubble of the late 1990s.

Hungary is no longer a democracy...Welcome to Europe

President János Áder has just signed the implementation decrees for new constitutional reforms that wipe out what was left of opposition forces against the government.

More particularly, the Constitutional Court is no longer allowed to give its opinion about the content of laws and to refer to its own case law – which results in the loss of almost all monitoring power on the legislature and the executive.

This meticulous destruction of democracy and its values – whose starting point was the tidal-wave election of Fidesz in 2010 – has taken place for months and months under everybody’s eyes.

German pastor accused of inciting violence at anti-Nazi protest warns trial may deter activism

BERLIN - A German pastor due to stand trial for allegedly inciting violence at an anti-Nazi demonstration said Tuesday that authorities risk deterring people from standing up to right-wing extremists if he is convicted.

Prosecutors accuse Lothar Koenig of serious breach of the peace, attempted obstruction of justice and attempted coercion at a protest in the eastern city of Dresden two years ago.

Koenig, 59, allegedly used a van equipped with a loudspeaker to urge protesters to attack officers and later tried to drive a police vehicle off the road, Dresden prosecutor Lorenz Haase told The Associated Press.

EU should welcome Ukraine as a partner for Europe's own good

For all the troubling news from Europe – economic uncertainty and political instability – conditions were much more threatening after World War II. During that anxious era, the United States and other Western democracies responded not by pulling back but by reaching out to former adversaries and vulnerable allies with economic assistance and international alliances that contributed to stable democracies, prosperous economies, and a lasting peace.

Now, the Western nations have the opportunity to make another pragmatic and courageous decision in the tradition of the policies that provided for postwar peace and prosperity. Ukrainian leaders recently concluded talks with the European Union about moving forward toward an EU Association Agreement (a treaty between an EU and non-EU country). The agreement would expand trade and travel and pave the way for closer Ukrainian integration with the EU.

Netherlands joins UK in opposing additional cash for EU budget...Why don't you just take it from our bank account's? No point dressing it up, you either add it to our taxes or take it, either way we will pay

The European Commission should try to find extra savings to bridge a budget shortfall this year rather than turn to member states for new cash, Dutch finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem told MPs yesterday (2 April), as quoted by the Dutch press.

Last week, the Commission requested the “amending budget” for 2013, a routine procedure, due to a backlog of payments created at the end of every budget year.

An extra €9 billion is needed for refunding payments made on cohesion - or development projects in the EU's poorer regions. Another €2.2 billion is earmarked "to cover needs in practically all other areas of the budget, with the exception of administration, where no additional requests have been made," the Commission said in a statement.

The UK called the Commission request for an extra €11.2 billion for the 2013 budget "totally unacceptable".

UK construction shrinks for third month running in March - PMI

British construction output contracted in March for the third month in a row, a survey showed on Wednesday, suggesting the sector will have weighed on economic growth in the first quarter.

The Markit/CIPS Construction Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) inched up to 47.2 from 46.8 in February, holding below the 50 level that separates expansion from contraction and slightly undershooting forecasts for 47.5.

Markit, which compiles the survey, said that unusually cold weather combined with sluggish underlying demand kept a lid on construction work in March.

Eight cows from Dumfries and Galloway have tested positive for Schmallenberg virus (SBV) antibodies, indicating exposure to the disease last year, although at a low prevalence.

SBV is spread by midges and cases of the virus were reported across Europe last year.

A small number of animals which were recently moved into Scotland tested positive for SBV but the eight Dumfries and Galloway animals were all homebred, providing the first evidence to suggest exposure to infected midges in Scotland.

The eight cows are part of a 160-strong dairy herd at Barony campus of Scotland's Rural College. No deformed calves have yet been born.

Bomb squad, Hazmat team helps in removal of meth lab components from Jacksonville trailer park

The bomb squad and a Hazmat team assisted Jacksonville police Tuesday in removing a component of a meth lab from a Westside mobile home community.

Officers were called to the Americana Mobile Home Park at 6126 Townsend Road, just off Blanding Boulevard, about 7 p.m. after a resident walking his dog found a plastic bottle with medications used to make the drug scattered nearby, Sgt. Danny Perkins said. It was found in an area about 50 yards away from the entrance before reaching the homes.

Perkins said detectives later determined the bottle containing an unknown substance to be connected to a meth lab, prompting assistance from the bomb squad, a Hazmat team and the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department.

Hostilities flare along Israeli-Gaza border

Israel pressed Hamas on Wednesday to rein in rocket-firing militants in the Gaza Strip after the most serious outbreak of cross-border hostilities since a ceasefire ended an eight-day war in November.

The Israeli military said two rockets fired from the Gaza Strip struck southern Israel on Wednesday, causing no casualties, hours after it launched its first air strikes in the Palestinian enclave in four months.

Israeli planes had gone into action on Tuesday, targeting what the military described as "two extensive terror sites in the northern Gaza Strip", after three rockets were fired into Israel earlier that day, causing no casualties or damage.

Louis Taylor Freed After 42 Years In Jail For Deadly Fire

A man who was locked up for more than 40 years for starting a deadly fire at an Arizona hotel has walked free from prison after years of doubt about his conviction.

Louis Taylor was just 16 when he was arrested following the inferno which killed 29 people at the Pioneer Hotel in Tucson in December 1970.

"It's a tale of two tragedies: the Pioneer Hotel fire and my conviction," he told reporters gathered outside the prison.

He could continue his fight to fully clear his name or enter a plea and get out of prison straightaway.

South Korea Warns Military Action An 'Option'

South Korea's defence minister, Kim Kwan-jin, has said that military action is an "option" to protect its citizens in its stand off with North Korea.

The news comes as the United States has said it will "not accept" North Korea as a nuclear state, after Pyongyang raised tensions by refusing the South entry to a joint industrial complex.

The North says it will restart all nuclear facilities including its mothballed Yongbyon reactor, which is able to produce bomb-grade plutonium.

The environmental impact of a massive oil spill in Arkansas are becoming clear after two ducks were found dead thanks to the thousands of barrels of crude which have spewed into a small town.

In addition, 10 animals were found alive but injured as a result of the spill in the town of Mayflower, where an ExxonMobil pipeline ruptured on Friday.

Residents have shared photographs of their backyards flooded with oil as the crude has run in the streets and poured into a nearby lake.

Steven Goff, 41, (bottom left) of Ventnor, NJ has been charged with the 1990 murder of 15-year-old Frederick Hart (top left), who was stabbed multiple times and left to decompose for more than a year in a wooded area of Galloway Township. In an online profile, the 41-year-old revealed that he served five years in prison on drug charges when he was 18 years old.

U.S. sees highest poverty spike since the 1960s, leaving 50 million Americans poor as government cuts billions in spending... so does that mean there's no way out?

The number of Americans living in poverty has spiked to levels not seen since the mid 1960s, classing 20 per cent of the country’s children as poor.

It comes at a time when government spending cuts of $85 billion have kicked in after feuding Democrats and Republicans failed to agree on a better plan for addressing the national deficit.

The cuts will directly affect 50 million Americans living below the poverty income line and reduce their chances of finding work and a better life.

Before spending cuts kicked in on March 1st, 49-year-old Antonio Hammond became a success story for Catholic Charities of Baltimore - one of a multitude of organizations trying to haul people out of poverty.

In this Maryland port city, one of four residents is considered poor by U.S. government standards.

Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice Filmed verbally abusing and striking his players with basketballs during practice

Evan Spencer Ebel who killed prisons chief was wearing electronic monitoring bracelet that stopped working 5 days before he launched killing spree'....And was released 4 Years Early!

The ex-convict suspected in the killing of Colorado's prison chief who was mistakenly released from prison four years early slipped off his electronic monitoring bracelet, but parole officials didn't realize he had fled until just hours before the slaying.

A corrections computer system recorded that Evan Spencer Ebel's bracelet stopped working on March 14, according to documents released on Tuesday.

Officers learned he had fled on March 19, the day Colorado prison chief Tom Clements was fatally shot as he answered the front door at his home.

The detail is the latest example of how Ebel fell through the cracks of the criminal justice system in the years before his January release. On Monday, court officials acknowledged that a clerical error allowed Ebel to leave prison four years early because his most recent felony conviction was incorrectly recorded on his record.

A teenager has appeared in court after allegedly stabbing the mother of her boyfriend's baby in broad daylight after they lured her with the promise of new shoes for the child.

The 21-year-old victim, who has not been named, was walking with her eight-month-old baby in a stroller in Savin Hill, Massachusetts at 4pm on Monday when the couple jumped out on her.

The father of her child, 17-year-old Daquan Sparks, allegedly held her down while Samia Jones, also 17, repeatedly stabbed her with a 12-inch butcher's knife.

Three in 10 Americans believe a 'secretive power elite' is conspiring to rule the world and one in five Republicans believe President Obama is the 'anti-Christ'

Three in 10 Americans believe that a 'secretive power elite' is conspiring to rule the world through an authoritarian government and one in five Republicans believes President Obama is the 'anti-Christ,' according to a survey of the nation's most popular conspiracy theories.

The strange beliefs, which range from the serious (that the U.S. government knowingly allowed the 9/11 terrorist attacks to happen), to the comical (that the Beatles' Paul McCartney died in 1966 and was secretly replaced), the survey by Public Policy Polling shows there is no end to what some people will believe.

The theory on the terrorist attacks is supported by 11 percent of the survey's respondents, while another 11 percent said 'not sure' about whether the government was involved in the national tragedy.

China mobilises troops on border with North Korea as U.S. warns country is a 'growing threat' to world security

Chinese troops have been placed on a heightened state of alert along the border with North Korea after a series of warlike statements and actions from the pariah state.

The North today blocked South Korean workers from entering a jointly run factory zone which is one of the few signs of positive relations between the neighbouring countries.

The move to bar South Koreans from going to work at the Kaesong industrial complex comes a day after North Korea announced that it would re-open a nuclear facility which has been closed for six years.
