President Francois Bozize Flees capital Bangui and raising fears of instability in the mineral-rich heart of Africa.

Rebels in Central African Republic seized control of the riverside capital Bangui after fierce fighting on Sunday, forcing President Francois Bozize to flee and raising fears of instability in the mineral-rich heart of Africa.

At least nine South African soldiers were killed trying to prevent the rebels taking Bangui, a Reuters witness said, dealing a blow to Pretoria's attempt to stabilize the chaotic Central African nation and assert its influence in the region.

Thames Estuary dead whale towed to Sheerness docks

A dead whale has been towed to shore from the Thames Estuary after it was spotted in the sea off Kent.

Thames coastguard said the whale, a young female humpback measuring about 36ft (11m), had been taken to Sheerness docks where experts will examine it.

An alert was raised at about 07:00 GMT after the whale was spotted by crew on a nearby tug, off the Isle of Grain.

Earlier, the coastguard issued navigation warnings to vessels in the area to avoid the animal.

Russians prepare to quit Cyprus

For Fedor Mikhin the deluge of overseas phone calls began on Wednesday, just five days after the EU first proposed the ill-fated tax levy on Cypriot depositors.

There were the two Andorran bankers who called offering to open bank accounts for the Cyprus-based businessman in the Pyrenees, and then Mr Mikhin’s Swiss bank, which announced it would be sending representatives to Limassol to poach Russian clients on Tuesday, the day Cyprus is due to reopen its banks for the first time in over a week.

While last week saw dozens of well-heeled Russians and their representatives fly down to Cyprus to check on bank accounts and confer furiously with Cypriot officials, they are being closely followed by another wave of visitors: the European bankers who hope Cyprus’s loss will be their gain.

Mursi warning stirs fears in Egypt opposition

Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi threatened on Sunday to take unspecified steps to "protect this nation" after violent demonstrations against his Muslim Brotherhood, using vague but severe language that the opposition said heralded a crackdown.

In remarks following clashes outside the Brotherhood's Cairo headquarters on Friday, Mursi warned that "necessary measures" would be taken against any politicians shown to be involved in what he described as violence and rioting.

"If I am forced to do what is required to protect this nation, then I will do it. And I fear that I might be on the verge of doing it," Mursi said in a statement. He did not elaborate.

Swedish bus driver forced black people to travel on separate coach in aparthied-style incidents

Black and white people were forced to travel on separate buses in an appalling 'apartheid'-type incident in Sweden, it has emerged.

An inquiry has been launched after a bus driver put blacks, Asians and other non-whites on to one bus and all-Caucasians onto another in Stockholm.

'It was a very unpleasant experience. It felt like we were on our way to the airport to be deported from Sweden,' said Samer Chatila, who was not allowed on to the ‘white’ bus with his brother and friend.

Mexico: seven men are executed and dumped on chairs in city centre with chilling signs pinned to their chests with ice picks

These shocking photos show how the bodies of seven men were found on plastic chairs in Mexico having been shot in the head, with threat messages nailed to some of their chests using ice picks.

A placard on one of the bodies, which were found early yesterday morning in Uruapan, Michoacan state, said: ‘Warning! This will happen to thieves, kidnappers, sex offenders and extortionists.’

Seven bodies had bullet wounds and had been placed individually in the sitting position in chairs near a roundabout, local authorities said. The local attorney general's office did not provide a motive.

German neo-Nazi cell bigger than previously thought

A German neo-Nazi cell that waged a racist killing spree over a period of seven years without being detected by the authorities may have had a far bigger network of supporters than initially thought.

According to a report in the Bild newspaper on Sunday, security officials have compiled a list of 129 people who are suspected of helping the group, accused of murdering eight ethnic Turks, a Greek and a policewoman between 2000 and 2007.

The existence of the cell, which called itself the Nationalist Socialist Underground (NSU), only came to light by chance in late 2011 after two members committed suicide in the aftermath of a botched bank robbery and a female accomplice set fire to an apartment used by the gang.

Germans, burdened by their Nazi past, were horrified by the revelations and Chancellor Angela Merkel has publicly apologized to the families of the murder victims.

Emerging nations risk Cyprus contagion: World Bank

Developing nations must be ready for a financial market selloff if the Cypriot banking sector collapses, World Bank Managing Director Sri Mulyani Indrawati said on Sunday, urging a swift resolution to the crisis in Cyprus.

In an interview on the sidelines of a forum in Beijing, Indrawati said she is watching very closely the outcome of a plan to levy a one-off tax on Cypriot deposits as part of a deal to obtain a 10 billion euro bailout from the EU.

Her remarks contrast with those of German politicians, who have suggested contagion from Cyprus, an island of a million inhabitants, would be limited. Europe's financial markets have also traded in relative calm since the Cyprus crisis flared up.

Dutch voters think Cyprus should leave euro zone....They probably would if they were Allowed to!

Most Dutch think Cyprus should leave the euro zone even though the cost of a bail-out for the country would be tiny compared to the rescue for Greece, a poll published on Sunday said.

More than half those surveyed, or 56 percent, thought Cyprus should leave, according to a survey by pollster Maurice de Hond.

The results of the poll were published as Dutch finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem prepares to meet other euro zone finance ministers to discuss a bail-out for the indebted Mediterranean island. Dijsselbloem is the chair of the Eurogroup euro zone finance ministers, who are due to meet later on Sunday in Brussels.

Syrian opposition head quits

The head of Syria's main opposition group resigned on Sunday, weakening the moderate wing of the two-year revolt against President Bashar al-Assad's rule and complicating Western efforts to back the rebels.

The resignation of Moaz Alkhatib, a former imam of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus who had offered Assad a negotiated exit, could make the West more cautious in supporting the revolt. Alkhatib was seen as a moderate bulwark against the rising influence of al-Qaeda linked jihadist forces.

China: Would You Like Some Emerald Green Shrimp with Your Pink Water?

Following the hot-pink water coming out of taps in Jinan, China last week, the nation continues to be experiencing food discoloration of acid trip proportions. Shrimp that turns vibrant green when cooked were recently found in Shanghai.

A member of China’s Weibo microblogging service, Christy Mi Jiang was warming up some shrimp in her microwave one day. When she went to remove the crustaceans she was surprised to see that their heads had turned a deep green color.

As is the custom when you see something freaky, Christy took a photo and posted it on the social networking service right away. It garnered instant attention and went as viral as those shrimp looked.

Several users cracked wise calling the shrimp as special breed “Jade Shrimp” which was actually very valuable.

Other more serious users pointed out the color’s resemblance to malachite green a chemical with a variety of applications such as a dye and as a fungicide in aquatic life.

Police spend FOUR WEEKS tracking down mother, 45, after she made Facebook joke about egging PM

Police spent four weeks tracking down a mother who joked on Facebook about throwing an egg at David Cameron, it has today been claimed.
Debra Burt said that she made the remark after becoming frustrated with government cuts.

The 45-year-old from Ramsgate, Kent, wrote: 'Cameron - I'd like to egg him' on a friend's Facebook timeline, during a conversation about the Prime Minister's visit to Kent last week to witness the Archbishop of Canterbury being sworn in.

She told the Sun she felt as if the police had been snooping on her.

She said: 'I’m not a terrorist. I’m just a middle-aged woman who made a jokey remark.

Truckers wary of natural gas vehicles

Truckers considering natural gas as an alternative to high-priced diesel say the cost of vehicles that run on the cheap and cleaner-burning fuel is still too high for them to see a timely payback on their investment.

Israel fires into Syria after Golan attack on troops

Israel said it fired into Syria on Sunday and destroyed a machinegun position in the Golan Heights from where shots had been fired at Israeli soldiers in a further spillover of the Syrian civil war along a tense front.

It was not immediately clear whether Israel held Syrian troops or rebels responsible for what a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said had been a deliberate attack on Israeli patrols in the occupied territory.

Israeli forces "destroyed a Syrian machine gun nest that fired twice in the last 24 hours on Israeli patrols operating to safeguard the border," the spokesman, Ofir Gendelman, said on his Twitter page.

The influence of Germany in the Euro group is too large

TRANSLATION _ Dutch News

EU insiders have told German magazine Focus that The dominance and harshness of the country in the euro zone rescue of Cyprus is sitting uncomfortable with other Member states.

According to the critics they feel other finance ministers of the eurozone itself, marginalized''. In the case of Cyprus, the German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble with Finland, Slovakia and the Dutch Presidency of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, his side have pushed that savers have to pay them to the financial rescue of the island state. He would also have a solid alliance with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

A senior EU official playing the German elections later this year and has a important role in the preparation of Schäuble. Focus writes further that the appointment of Dutchman Jeroen Dijsselbloem chairman of the Eurogroup was possible because he was a,Political lightweight and could be a puppet and controlled by Schäuble.

The close ties between Germany and the IMF has raised criticism. That international organization is important, because the Bundestag, the German parliament and parliaments of other Eurozone countries attach to participation of the Fund in the rehabilitation of the finances of countries. The IMF considers Cyprus more and more like an outsider in the eurozone, which you can do whatever you want. ,, There is a structural problem in the decision-making and sensible troika cooperation'' says an anonymous senior EU representative to Focus. The troika work with the European Central Bank, the EU and the IMF together.

Syrian port prospers under Assad's protection

This once sleepy Syrian port now buzzes with shoppers milling about crowded market places. Lines of cars wait patiently at traffic lights - a rare mark of order in a country where most cities have erupted into street wars.

Tartous remains an island of calm - for now. And with a ring of army checkpoints carefully guarding its outskirts, it is flourishing amid Syria's destruction.

That is partly because the city is home to many Alawites, the minority sect to which President Bashar al-Assad belongs and which now feels threatened by an uprising against him led by Syria's Sunni Muslim majority.

Tartous is not only a haven for thousands of civilians fleeing violence, but a magnet for merchants who want to keep business flowing in what they view as only a temporary home.

The winter that never ends! Snow and floods sweep east across the U.S. after chaos and Colorado

A major early spring storm brought heavy snow, severe thunderstorms and floods as it moved east across the United States on Saturday, closing highways, forcing flight cancellations and causing a pileup involving dozens of vehicles.

The weather system forced the cancellations of more than 100 flights in and out of Denver International Airport on Saturday and blowing and drifting snow closed several roads in Colorado, including Interstate 70 in both directions east of Denver to the Kansas state line.

"Travel on the eastern plains is strongly discouraged," said Mindy Crane, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation. "It is snowing half an inch an hour with sustained winds of 25 miles an hour with gusts up to 40 miles an hour."

Britain's coldest spring since 1963 claims 5,000 lives: Pensioners worst affected - and experts say final toll could be 'horrendous'

Bitter Arctic conditions caused blackouts and traffic chaos yesterday, as experts warned of an 'horrendous' death toll among the elderly. In North Wales (centre) the Red Cross was brought in to transport vital medical staff to hospitals in 4x4 vehicles because the snow had made roads off limits to normal cars. Power lines were down in Northern Ireland, Scotland and North Wales, leaving 50,000 homes without electricity. UK risks time bomb of untreatable TB as number of drug-resistant cases rises rapidly

Medical experts warned last night that there could be a surge in cases of tuberculosis resistant to current drug treatments unless the Government takes urgent action.

Europe has seen a rapid increase in multi-drug-resistant – or MDR – tuberculosis, which cannot be treated with the two antibiotic treatments normally given to sufferers. In the past eight years scientists have seen an increase in another strain, known as XDR tuberculosis, which is resistant to even more TB drugs. A report published in The Lancet today warns that this more virulent variety could lead to the emergence of "untreatable tuberculosis".

Europe's political leaders, and their finance ministers, are having to decide in practice at breakneck speed on issues on which they have not yet agreed in theory.

Among those issues is whether euro membership is really irreversible for all member states, or only for countries deemed systemic, and what the true meaning is of the European Union's agreed guarantee of 100,000 euros in bank deposits.

"Lex Cyprus" will likely be a template for future bailouts, bank resolution and the protection - or not - of creditors and depositors, even if euro zone leaders swear on the bones of saints, as they did for Greece, that this is a unique case.

Central African Republic capital falls to rebels, Bozize flees: sources

Rebels in Central African Republic seized control of the country's riverside capital Bangui on Sunday, forcing President Francois Bozize to flee into neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, government officials said.

The Seleka rebel coalition resumed hostilities this week in the mineral-rich former French colony, vowing to oust Bozize, whom it accused of breaking a January peace agreement to integrate its fighters into the army.

"The rebels control the town," said presidency spokesman Gaston Mackouzangba. "I hope there will not be any reprisals."

Israel says deal with Turks does not require Gaza blockade end

Israel did not commit to ending its Gaza blockade as part of reconciliation with Turkey and could clamp down even harder on the Palestinian enclave if security is threatened, a senior Israeli official said on Sunday.

After Friday's U.S.-brokered fence-mending announcement, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said Israel had met his demands it apologize for killing nine Turks aboard a Gaza-bound activist ship in 2010, pay compensation and ease the blockade.

But during the almost three-year rift between the ex-allies, Erdogan had routinely insisted that Israel end the blockade.

Top China college in focus with ties to army's cyber-spying unit

Faculty members at a top Chinese university have collaborated for years on technical research papers with a People's Liberation Army (PLA) unit accused of being at the heart of China's alleged cyber-war against Western commercial targets.

Several papers on computer network security and intrusion detection, easily accessed on the Internet, were co-authored by researchers at PLA Unit 61398, allegedly an operational unit actively engaged in cyber-espionage, and faculty at Shanghai Jiaotong University, a centre of academic excellence with ties to some of the world's top universities and attended by the country's political and business elite.

Cyprus seeks 11th-hour deal to avert meltdown

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades was expected in Brussels on Sunday to seek an 11th-hour reprieve from financial meltdown, with a bailout from the European Union and the island's place in Europe's single currency bloc hanging in the balance.

Underlining the gravity of Cyprus' position, the EU's economic affairs chief said there were now "only hard choices left" for the latest casualty of the euro zone crisis.

Facing a Monday deadline to avert a collapse of the Cypriot banking system, talks in Nicosia to seal a bailout from the EU and International Monetary Fund broke up late on Saturday without result.

Scrambling to find the funds, officials said Cyprus had conceded to a one-time levy on bank deposits over 100,000 euros, a dramatic U-turn from five days ago when lawmakers angrily threw out a similar proposal as "bank robbery."

A senior Cypriot official said Nicosia had agreed with its lenders on a 20 percent levy over and above 100,000 euros at the island's largest lender, Bank of Cyprus, and four percent on deposits above the same level at other banks.

Smallpox Outbreak kills 50 sheep at private farm, QATAR

An outbreak of smallpox at a sheep farm in Al Khor has killed more than 50 animals, sparking fears among other animal farm owners, a senior official said.

The veterinary centre at Al Khor received several animals with smallpox from a private farm, Director of Animals Department at the Ministry of Environment, Dr Qasim Al Qahtani, told Al Sharq.

He added that if the spread of the disease was not contained, the death toll may shoot up.

According to Qahtani, a month-and-half ago, several of the 700 sheep at the farm tested positive for smallpox.

NCoV Saudi Arabia: `Mild’ NCoV Case With Contact Hx With Case #15 - WHO

The Saudi Arabia Ministry of Health reports the patient is a contact of the previous case reported on March 12. This patient suffered only a mild illness and has recovered from the disease. Although this current patient was a contact with the 15th case reported two weeks ago, the WHO will not call it person-to-person transmission. To date, WHO has been informed of a global total of 16 confirmed cases of human infection with nCoV, including nine deaths. This case is the ninth case reported from Saudi Arabia. Of the 16 confirmed cases reported to date, nine resulted in death.

Musharraf Returns To Pakistan Despite Threat

Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has defied Taliban death threats to return home after more than four years in exile.

The 69-year-old ex-dictator was whisked away by security forces as he arrived at Karachi airport and did not stop to greet hundreds of supporters who had waited for him.

It is unclear if the security forces detained Mr Musharraf, who faces criminal charges in three cases, including one involving the assassination of ex-premier Benazir Bhutto, or acted out of concern for his safety.
