When the Whole World Has Drones: The precedents the U.S. has set for robotic warfare may have fearsome consequences as other countries catch up

A slim aircraft glided through Israeli airspace, maintaining low altitude and taking a winding path to avoid detection. It flew over sensitive military installations and was beginning its approach to the Dimona nuclear reactor when it was blown from the sky by the Israel Defense Forces. The plane was pilotless, directed by agents elsewhere, and had been attempting to relay images back home. Whether they were successfully transmitted, Israelis won’t say, perhaps because they don’t know. But here’s what’s certain: It wasn’t American. It wasn’t Russian or Chinese. It was an Iranian drone, assembled in Lebanon and flown by Hezbollah.

The proliferation of drone technology has moved well beyond the control of the United States government and its closest allies. The aircraft are too easy to obtain, with barriers to entry on the production side crumbling too quickly to place limits on the spread of a technology that promises to transform warfare on a global scale. Already, more than 75 countries have remote piloted aircraft. More than 50 nations are building a total of nearly a thousand types. At its last display at a trade show in Beijing, China showed off 25 different unmanned aerial vehicles. Not toys or models, but real flying machines.

It’s a classic and common phase in the life cycle of a military innovation: An advanced country and its weapons developers create a tool, and then others learn how to make their own. But what makes this case rare, and dangerous, is the powerful combination of efficiency and lethality spreading in an environment lacking internationally accepted guidelines on legitimate use. This technology is snowballing through a global arena where the main precedent for its application is the one set by the United States; it’s a precedent Washington does not want anyone following.

Cyprus Bailout: 15% Tax On Big Savers Mulled...........Which is the Deal EU gave to Cyprus to start with!

Cypus is reportedly considering a levy of 15% on all bank deposits over 100,000 euros as its attempt to secure a rescue for the economy.

The original terms of the EU bailout for Cyprus proposed by the troika of international lenders would have slapped a levy on all bank deposits - 6.75% on accounts holding up to 100,000 euros and 9.9% on those over that - in order to raise 5.8bn euros (£4.9bn).

But that was overwhelmingly rejected by MPs earlier in the week, leaving them less than a week to find a 'Plan B' with which to raise the cash.

The ship’s medical personnel responded to the scene and found the wounded sailor, Chernitzer said.

U-T San Diego reported that the Navy has not said whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted or if any suspects are in custody.

Cypriot president 'warned friends to move money abroad' before financial crisis hit

Cypriot president Nikos Anastasiades 'warned' close friends of the financial crisis about to engulf his country so they could move their money abroad, it was claimed on Friday.

The respected Cypriot newspaper Filelftheros made the allegation which was picked up eagerly by German media.
Germans are angry at the way their country has been linked to the Nazis and Hitler by Cypriots angry at the defunct rescue deal which called for a levy on all savings.

The Cyprus newspaper did not say how much money was moved abroad but quoted sources saying the president 'knew about the possible closure of the banks' and tipped off close friends who were able to move vast sums abroad.

Italian media said the 4.5 billion euros left the island in the week before the crisis.

Fury as child porn goes viral on Facebook with 16,000 'shares' and 4,000 'likes'

Facebook has sparked fury after a graphic child porn video went viral on the social network, reportedly being 'shared' over 16,000 times.

Thousands of users logged onto their accounts last night to find the horrifying footage appear on their personal news feed and instantly took to Twitter to vent their disgust.

Even more disturbingly, users then began uploading and sharing screen grabs of the video on Twitter in an apparent bid to alert fellow Twitterati of the horrifying content.

But this disturbing underbelly of the popular social networking website is not a new revelation to the company, which until 2011 relied heavily on reports from its users about illegal activity.

Last year an exposé published by WND.com revealed a disturbing amount of child pornography being shared by predators on the social network.

The streets of Newlyn, Cornwall (left) have been inundated with rainwater as 80 flood alerts were issued across the UK, mostly in the south-east and south-west. Intrepid dog walkers braved the snow in Sheffield (centre) this morning as more, up to eight inches, is expected to blanket everywhere north of the M4 corridor as the day progresses. Last night a 41-year-old woman and a teenage boy were rescued (right) by helicopter after becoming stranded more than 3,000ft up Mount Snowdon. Bitter gale force winds are also forecast to sweep across Britain creating blizzard-like conditions and plunging temperatures down to well below freezing.

A shooting that prompted a lockdown for hours at a Marine base in Virginia ended with three dead early Friday, including the gunman, authorities said.

Sgt. Christopher Zahn said they were notified of the shooting at Marine Corps Base Quantico late Thursday.

One person was fatally shot, and the gunman barricaded himself into a room, he said.

Cyprus unveils shake-up as the clock ticks

Cypriot lawmakers will on Friday vote on a revised bailout plan to overhaul its banking industry and force losses on big depositors, in a race to reach a deal to avert financial collapse before the European Central Bank suspends crucial funding to the island nation.

The Friday vote, which is due to take place after parliament debates the bill some time after midday local time, follows the end of fruitless talks between Russian finance minister Anton Siluanov and his Cypriot counterpart, Michael Sarris, over possible support.

There were already long lines at cash machines in Nicosia on Friday and one Cypriot official summed up the sense of desperation saying: “We are waiting for a messiah to come and save us, and of course, there is none”.

Cyber-attack on South Korea may not have come from China after all: regulator

This week's cyber-attack on South Korean broadcasters and banks may not have originated in China after all as the IP address has been traced to one of the victim banks, the communications regulator said on Friday.

But it couldn't rule anything out, it added.

Hackers on Wednesday brought down the networks of three broadcasters and two banks, initially seen as the work of North Korea using its vast army of "cyber-warriors" to cripple computer servers.

Massive volcanic eruptions wiped out HALF of life on Earth 200 million years ago

A series of massive volcanic eruptions wiped out half of life on Earth 200 million years ago, according to new research.

Scientists examining evidence around the globe from the United States to North Africa say they have linked the abrupt disappearance of half of the world's species 200 million years ago to a precisely dated set of gigantic volcanic eruptions.

The mega eruptions may have caused climate changes so sudden that many creatures were unable to adapt - possibly on a pace similar to that of human-influenced climate warming today, according to the researchers.

Sandra Lee Allen a Self-proclaimed prophet 'bilked woman out of $100K life savings' by claiming she had to tithe the money 'get right with God' or her son would die for the sins of an ancestor

A Washington state woman claiming to be a prophet of God bilked a friend out of her $100,000 life savings in a single month by claiming her ancestor had committed a murder and that she had to 'get right with the Lord,' police say.

Sandra Lee Allen, 54, claimed that Elizabeth Hughes needed to catch up on ten years of missed tithing and pay for the next ten years, as well. She claimed that God had told her an earthquake was coming and the Mrs Hughes' son would die if she did not make up for the sins of her forefathers, according to a report from officers in Federal Way, Washington.

Allen claimed she was using the money to build her ministry and an outreach center. Instead, she bought a Jaguar X-Type luxury car and spent nearly $32,000 in a month on shopping sprees to Nordstrom department store, Coach purses and Best Buy.

The payout of a $1.2 million reward offered in the hunt for rogue ex-cop Christopher Dorner could turn into a fight before anyone sees a penny.

A couple who was tied up in their condominium by the fugitive and a camp caretaker he carjacked shortly afterward have laid claim to the prize, and others could be in line for much of the money that authorities hope to dole out by mid-April.

Both parties claim they provided the key tip that ultimately led Dorner to hole up in a vacant mountain cabin where he apparently took his own life after a shootout with police. He killed four people, including two police officers, during his rampage across Southern California.

Torrington Football Rape: THIRD student charged and more arrests likely in 'Steubenville II' rape case as community turns on bullies who labelled 13-year-old victims 'whores' and 'hoes'

A third student at Torrington High School has been charged with sexually assaulting at least one 13-year-old girl, as police warned the disturbed Connecticut community to brace for more arrests.

Mirroring the Steubenville, Ohio, rape case, which wrapped up this week, two hot-shot football players, Edgar Gonzalez and Joan Toribio, are facing charges of sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor after each allegedly had sex with a separate 13-year-old girl on February 10.

Government's new housing policy 'can help wealthy buy second homes'

The government's new housing policy has been condemned as a "spare home subsidy" by critics, who raise concerns that the mortgage guarantee can be used by wealthy people to buy second homes.

The public guarantee for £130bn of mortgage lending was part of the centrepiece Help to Buy scheme announced on Wednesday as part of George Osborne's "aspiration" budget. On Thursday the opposition made the scheme the centrepiece of its attacks on the package of measures, with the shadow chancellor, Ed Balls, contrasting it with a separate policy to withdraw some housing benefit from families in social housing considered to have surplus rooms.

"From what I can see, the government is basically saying that if you've got a spare room in a social home, you will be paying a bedroom tax," said Balls. "But if you want a spare home and you can afford it, we'll help you buy one."

MILLIONS OF STRANDED PRAWNS BLANKET CHILE BEACH, CAUSE STILL UNKNOWN

Millions of small prawns became stranded on a beach in southern Chile this week, carpeting a three-kilometre strand in red, local fishermen and police said.

The fishermen in the Coronel area, some 500 kilometres south of Santiago, began noticing something out of the ordinary at the beginning of the week.

There were giant "red spots" appearing just off the shore, said fishermen union president Juan Gutierrez.

By Tuesday, the red mass had moved to land.

"Millions of prawns were stranded on the beach," a shocked Mr Gutierrez said.

"I've been a fisherman 39 years and have never seen anything like it before."

Tom Clements, who was appointed two years ago as executive director of the Colorado Department of Corrections, was shot on Tuesday night at his home in a secluded wooded area near the town of Monument, 45 miles south of Denver.

Has Qatada posted more online rants? Jihadi articles 'written while under surveillance'

Hate preacher Abu Qatada is being investigated for allegedly posting extremist propaganda on the internet while his every move was being monitored by security officials.

Anti-terror police raided his home after they found fresh jihadi articles on the internet, and are probing if they have been written by Qatada.

If the allegations are true, it would make a mockery out of strict controls he has been placed under since his release from jail last year.
The Jordanian-born extremist was subjected to some of the tightest bail conditions ever imposed in Britain on his release.

Drought that ravaged US crops likely to worsen in 2013, forecast warns

The historic drought that laid waste to America's grain and corn belt is unlikely to ease before the middle of this year, a government forecast warned on Thursday.

The annual spring outlook from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted hotter, drier conditions across much of the US, including parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, where farmers have been fighting to hang on to crops of winter wheat.

The three-month forecast noted an additional hazard, however, for the midwest: with heavy, late snows setting up conditions for flooding along the Red and Souris rivers in North Dakota.

Italian political leaders hope to bring direction to a government at sea

It has been nearly four weeks since Italians went to the polls and the country is still drifting rudderless without a functioning government. This week, political leaders are holding two days of crucial talks with Italy's ceremonial president of the republic, Giorgio Napolitano.

The talks began Wednesday morning and are expected to conclude at 6 p.m. Thursday in Rome.

Italy's February elections were inconclusive, and have created a political gridlock that is hobbling the country's economy.

The nation is currently in its longest recession in 20 years. It's economy -- Europe's third-largest with a government debt the Treasury Ministry puts at $2.6 trillion -- shrank by 0.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, Eurobarometer says.

Is Osborne risking a US style housing bubble?

On the surface, George Osborne’s flagship Help to Buy scheme looks like a masterstroke that will make mortgages more affordable to first-time buyers and thus help boost the economy.

The property market is becalmed because many banks and building societies, having paid the price of irresponsible loans which helped contribute to the credit crisis, now demand deposits of at least 20 per cent of a home’s value before they will offer a mortgage.

This caution means that tens of thousands of potential buyers cannot afford the necessary downpayment.

Suicide bombing kills top pro-Assad preacher

A suicide bomb ripped through a mosque in the heart of the Syrian capital on Thursday, killing a top Sunni Muslim preacher and outspoken supporter of President Bashar Assad in one of the most stunning assassinations of Syria’s 2-year-old civil war. At least 41 others were killed and more than 84 wounded.

The slaying of Sheikh Mohammad Said Ramadan al-Buti removes one of the few remaining pillars of support for Mr. Assad among the majority Sunni sect that has risen up against him.

It also marks a new low in the Syrian civil war. While suicide bombings blamed on Islamic extremists fighting with the rebels have become common, Thursday’s attack was the first time a suicide bomber detonated his explosives inside a mosque.
