The Super Rich: Now Invisible

Who really lives at One Hyde Park, called the world’s most expensive residential building? Its mostly absentee owners, hiding behind offshore corporations based in tax havens, provide a portrait of the new global super-wealthy.

Up until the 18th century, Knightsbridge, which borders genteel Kensington, was a lawless zone roamed by predatory monks and assorted cutthroats. It didn’t come of age until the Victorian building boom, which left a charming legacy of mostly large and beautiful Victorian houses, with their trademark white or cream paint, black iron railings, high ceilings, and short, elegant stone steps up to the front door.

This will not be the impression a visitor now gets as he emerges from the Knightsbridge subway station’s south exit. He will be met by four hulking joined-up towers of glass, metal, and concrete, sandwiched between the Victorian splendors of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, to the east, and a pretty five-story residential block, to the west. This is One Hyde Park, which its developers insist is the world’s most exclusive address and the most expensive residential development ever built anywhere on earth. With apartments selling for up to $214 million, the building began to smash world per-square-foot price records when sales opened, in 2007. After quickly shrugging off the global financial crisis the complex has come to embody the central-London real-estate market, where, as high-end property consultant Charles McDowell put it, “prices have gone bonkers.”

Germany has warned Cyprus that its crisis-stricken banks may never reopen if the country rejects the terms of a bailout.

Wolfgang Schaeuble, Germany's finance minister whose country is Europe's main paymaster, said major Cypriot banks were 'insolvent if there are no emergency funds'.

Israeli general offers to share Iron Dome production with U.S.

The United States should be allowed to co-produce Israel's Iron Dome rocket interceptor so it can benefit from the money it has poured into the Jewish state's defense programs, a senior Israeli military officer said on Wednesday.

Israel developed Iron Dome to shoot down rockets launched from the Gaza Strip and it is the only system in the world to use radar-guided missiles for such short-range interceptions.

China: Residents Fear Cover-Up Over Dead Pigs

Anger is mounting in Shanghai where 14,000 dead pigs have been floating down rivers but residents have been told there is nothing to worry about.

But officials have not explained where the pigs came from, how they died or why they suddenly showed up in the river.

Cypriot "no" inspires Greeks to rail against austerity

Greeks and opposition parties inspired by the Cypriot rejection of an unpopular bailout deal urged Athens on Wednesday to stand up to foreign lenders whose demands have resulted in repeated rounds of austerity that have made Greek life a misery.

Cyprus's parliament on Tuesday rejected a levy on bank deposits demanded in return for aid, raising the specter of a default for the island nation that could mean enduring wave after wave of spending cuts and tax rises, just like Greece.

"See what Cyprus did? We are proud of them," said Fey Papadopoulou, 22, a university student. "They should be an example for our politicians, who have succumbed to every demand."

'In America, yes, we will shoot you': Fox News co-host Greg Gutfeld predicts gun-owner mayhem if bank account confiscation moves from Cyprus to U.S.

In a stunning speech on the Fox News Channel, commentator Greg Gutfeld predicted that if a bank taxation scheme like the one that shocked Cypriots should come to America, gun owners would aim at government officials -- and shoot to kill.

'While Cypriots can own guns, it’s a bear to get them,' Gutfeld noted on the popular talk show The Five.

'There is no gun culture there, which then allows the government to wonder of its docile populace: "What are they gonna do -- shoot us?"'

'Well, in America,' he sniped, 'yes, we will shoot you.'

NASA chief tells public to 'pray' if asteroid on collision course for Earth detected as lawmakers hear the nation is woefully under-prepared

The chief of NASA today delivered a sobering assessment of what the United States could do if faced with imminent annihilation by a rogue asteroid - resort to prayer.

When pressed on what NASA's plans were if they detected a similar one due to hit New York, Bolden replied, 'The answer to you is, if it's coming in three weeks, pray.'

massive sinkhole swallows pond in backyard of California home

A couple in California awoke on Sunday to find that a huge sinkhole had swallowed the pond in their backyard.

Homeowner Mark Korb, who lives at the property with his wife, said that the hole had drained the pond behind his Newcastle home in just five hours. Previously it had taken seven days to empty the same volume of water.

A sinkhole is a hole that opens up suddenly in the ground. They mostly occur because of erosion, underground water that gathers naturally or due to man-made activities.

S. Korean Banks Fall Victim to Biggest Cyber Attack in Two Years

Hackers temporarily shut down computer networks at South Korean broadcasters and banks in the biggest cyber attack on the nation in two years, prompting the government to investigate possible links with North Korea.

President Park Geun Hye’s administration set up a cyber crisis group to investigate whether North Korea is responsible, according to a statement from her office. Computer shutdowns today hit companies including Shinhan Bank (1558), Nonghyup Bank, Munhwa Broadcasting Corp., YTN and Korea Broadcasting System, the Korea Communications Commission said in a statement.

The attack occurred less than a month after Parkbecame president of Asia’s fourth-largest economy, and amid an increase in friction over North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. Kim Jong Un’s regime, which detonated an atomic device in February, recently threatened to attack the U.S. with nuclear weapons and today warned it would retaliate if the U.S. again flies B-52 bombers over the Korean peninsula.

Cyprus seeks Russian bailout aid, EU threatens cutoff

Cyprus pleaded for a new loan from Russia on Wednesday to avert a financial meltdown, but won no immediate relief after the island's parliament rejected the terms of a European bailout, raising the risk of default and a bank crash.

Finance Minister Michael Sarris said in Moscow he had reached no deal with his Russian counterpart Anton Siluanov, but talks would continue.

Russia's finance ministry said Nicosia had sought a further 5 billion euros on top of a five-year extension and lower interest on an existing 2.5 billion euro loan.

Meanwhile...

It was the first time a national legislature had rejected the conditions for EU assistance, after three years in which lawmakers in Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Italy all accepted biting austerity measures to secure aid.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose country is Europe's main paymaster, said it was up to the Cypriot government to come up with an alternative proposal but it was fair to expect savers with deposits over 100,000 euros to contribute to the bailout.

The EU has a track record of pressing smaller countries to vote again until they achieve the desired outcome.

Has Syria become a chemical war? Russia accuses rebels of using 'toxic' weapons in attack that left 25 dead

Russia's Foreign Ministry accused Syrian rebels of using chemical weapons to kill 16 people in an attack on a rural area near Aleppo today, calling it an extremely alarming and dangerous development.

A spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said: 'A case of the use of chemical weapons by the armed opposition was recorded early in the morning of March 19 in Aleppo province.

'We are very seriously concerned by the fact that weapons of mass destruction are falling into the hands of the rebels, which further worsens the situation in Syria and elevates the confrontation in the country to a new level.'

Britain 'is suffering a huge loss of faith in its institutions': Trust in all politicians has slumped to an all-time low, say researchers

Britain is in the grip of a ‘deep institutional crisis’ with trust in government, parliament and politicians at an ‘all-time low’, according to an internationally respected survey.

It has led to the UK having one of the lowest political participation rates in the developed world – and even scoring below Palestine and Iraq.

Researchers said other institutions in Britain have suffered a decline in trust including the police, the church, the banks and the media.

The night that proved Labour is the political wing of Hacked Off

For almost three hours, senior figures from the Labour Party, the Lib Dems, and the pressure group Hacked Off wrangled over the detail of the proposed agreement paving the way for the first political regulation of the newspaper industry since 1695.

Bizarrely, Sunday’s crucial meeting, which started at 9pm, was not held in a Government minister’s office but in Labour leader Ed Miliband’s spacious Commons suite with its panoramic views of the River Thames.

And an analysis of the event provides an extraordinary insight into how Labour has become the political wing of a lobby group that includes Press-hating zealots, small-town academics, faded actors with rackety sex lives, and, oh yes, the S&M specialist Max Mosley.

The great EU bank robbery crisis - just how safe are your savings?

What's going on?

The government in Cyprus had been told to take €5.8bn (£4.9bn) directly from savers’ bank accounts if it wanted a €10bn (£8.6bn) bailout.

This would have hit the country’s 1.1 million inhabitants, and up to 60,000 British expats who have Cypriot bank accounts.

Last night, this plan was rejected by the Cypriot Parliament.

So, is the crisis over?

Not by a long shot. There is no bailout under the current deal and the Cyprus economy remains in a perilous state.

This may only be a small country, but its fortunes could affect the rest of the EU, and, eventually, our own economy.

Will Spain be next?

The planned Cypriot cash-grab has sent shock waves through the eurozone — particularly in countries such as Portugal, Italy, Spain and Greece, which have already received bailouts and whose economies are still fragile.

Experts fear a precedent has been set and savers in other countries, particularly Spain, could have their savings confiscated, too.

US will not accept N Korea as a nuclear state: White House

The US will not accept North Korea as a nuclear power, the White House asserted as the Pentagon took steps along with its regional allies to thwart off any misadventure from Pyongyang.

"The United States will not accept North Korea as a nuclear state, nor will we stand by while it seeks to develop a nuclear-armed missile that can target the United States," the White House press secretary, Jay Carney told reporters yesterday.

The US he said announced last week to beef up its missile defense system in view of the increasing threat from North Korea.

B.C. in US - North Korean missile flight path

B.C. could get caught in the middle of a missile-firing war between North Korean and the U.S.

Even though the possibility is remote, UBC Prof. Michael Byers said Tuesday that B.C.'s exposure in such a conflict is worth contemplating.

He said the province lies along the route that long-range missiles from North Korea would have to take to hit the American West.

"Any North Korean missile headed for places like Seattle and Los Angeles would go directly over B.C.," said Byers, who holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law.

"I don't think B.C. is likely to be an intended target, but it could be hit accidentally," he said.

It's essential to keep in mind this was a direct consequence of Washington smashing international law to pieces; after Iraq, any freak anywhere can unleash preemptive war, and quote Bush/Cheney 2003 as precedent.

And yet, 10 years after Shock and Awe, even so-called "liberals" have been trying to legitimize something, anything, out of the "Iraq project". There was never a "project"; only a dizzying maze of lies - including a posterior justifications of bombing the Greater Middle East into "democracy".

Police shake-up over missing person cases

Police are to stop attending every report of a missing person to focus on cases where people are most at risk.

There are about 900 reports a day of those whose whereabouts are unknown and police have to investigate each one.

Senior officers say this blanket policy, which applies to England, Wales and Northern Ireland, drains resources.

From April, police will launch a full investigation only for people whose disappearance is out of character or who are thought to be at risk.

"Sixteen Saudis, an Iranian and a Lebanese were arrested in coordinated and simultaneous operations in four regions of the kingdom," including the capital Riyadh and the holy city of Mecca, the ministry said in a statement.

The suspects, some of whom were arrested in Eastern Province where the kingdom's Shiite minority is concentrated, were working for a foreign country which it did not name, the statement added.

S Korea: cyber scare worries market

South Korean shares fell sharply to a one-month low on Wednesday following a shutdown of computer networks at banks and broadcasters amid reports of a possible cyber attack.

There was no immediate confirmation of the causes of the incident. But the defence ministry told Bloomberg that it was probing whether there had been a cyber attack by North Korea. The Kospi index closed down 1 per cent gains in Japan and China. Even if it turns out Pyongyang wasn’t involved, the incident shows how sensitive Seoul’s markets are to the peninsula’s political tensions.

Obama's move against jet loophole hits turbulence

First came the recession, throwing thousands out of work. Then came the drought, choking crops and draining reservoirs. Then came the president, arguing that the private-plane buyers who fuel this city's economy benefit from an unfair tax break.

President Barack Obama's proposal to reduce that tax break has won wide support among Democrats who see it as an example of how the U.S. tax code is too generous to the wealthy.

But what looks like a loophole in Washington appears much different in this prairie city of 400,000, where leaders of all political stripes worry that Obama's rhetoric is already undermining an industry that accounts for 1 in 10 jobs in the region.

Al Qaeda claims attacks on Iraq invasion anniversary

Al Qaeda in Iraq has claimed responsibility for a wave of bombings and suicide attacks on Tuesday that killed around 60 people on the 10th anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion.

Islamic State of Iraq, the country's al Qaeda wing, is regaining strength, invigorated by the Sunni Muslim rebellion in next door Syria and has carried out dozens of high-profile attacks since the start of the year.

"What has reached you on Tuesday is just the first drop of rain, and a first phase, for by God's will, after this we will have our revenge," the al Qaeda statement posted on a jihadist website said.

Craig Berkman 'Stole' $8M From Clients in Facebook Scam

A Florida investment adviser has been charged in New York in an $8m securities fraud scheme that exploited demand for shares of the social networking site Facebook.

Craig L Berkman, 71, was arrested on Tuesday at his home in Florida and detained pending a hearing set for Thursday.

He was charged with falsely claiming in December 2010 to own shares of Facebook Inc, well before the company went public last year.

In reality Berkman did not directly own shares, and prosecutors say he stole much of $8m (£5.3m) that more than 50 investors entrusted to him.

Sandra Layne Guilty Of Murdering Grandson

A 75-year-old woman has been found guilty of the second-degree murder of her teenage grandson.

Jurors rejected Sandra Layne's claim that she shot 17-year-old Jonathan Hoffman in self-defence during an argument at their home in suburban Detroit, Michigan.

The second-degree murder conviction means the jury did not believe the boy's killing was pre-meditated.

Layne fired 10 rounds at her grandson, striking him six times in the chest, abdomen and arm.

Rowan O'Neill Saves Girl In Supermarket

A builder has been praised after he resuscitated a child who had collapsed and stopped breathing while out shopping with her mother in Australia.

CCTV footage shows two-year-old Shaylar's mother, Amy Collard, carrying her to a counter of a Perth supermarket to plead for help after she had lost consciousness before running outside to find her husband, Michael Narkle.

A couple, including tradesman Rowan O'Neill, can then be seen rushing to help the stricken girl - and fearing she was choking, Mr O'Neill turned her upside down in an effort to revive her.

When Mr Narkle enters the store, he can be seen breaking down before he and Mr O'Neill try to save Shaylar by shaking her, patting her on the back and attempting the Heimlich manoeuvre.

When this fails, Mr O'Neill begins mouth-to-mouth resuscitation - and after 90 seconds the girl opened her eyes, local media said.

French Minister Steps Down in Swiss Bank Investigation

Just hours after an announcement that he would be investigated on charges of tax fraud and money laundering, Budget Minister Jérôme Cahuzac resigned from the French government on Tuesday evening, though he insisted he had done nothing wrong.

In control of a crucial portfolio at a time of heightened budgetary discipline and rising taxes in France, as well as the European debt crisis and stagnant growth, Mr. Cahuzac was a highly visible public figure.

An assault weapons ban sought by President Barack Obama ran into serious trouble on Tuesday when Majority Leader Harry Reid acknowledged there was not enough support for it in the Senate.

Spanish king faces scandal as crisis fuels outcry

The head of Spanish intelligence was quizzed behind closed doors in parliament on Tuesday over whether public money had been spent on a woman whose friendship with King Juan Carlos has fueled talk of scandal and abdication.

Members of the parliamentary committee which oversees security spending and Felix Sanz of the National Intelligence Centre were bound by official secrecy not to reveal the content of the hearing, which lasted for some two hours in Madrid.

It was called by lawmakers probing whether Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, a German-born businesswoman based in Monaco, had ever benefited from a Spanish security detail or received any payments from the state as a lobbyist for Spanish firms abroad.

President Barack Obama arrives in Israel on Wednesday without any new peace initiative to offer disillusioned Palestinians and facing deep Israeli doubts over his pledge to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran.

Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland counties: Unexplained Tremors Reported

Just after 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon residents in Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland counties say they felt multiple earthquake-like tremors that rattled their homes and offices. Absecon resident, Kay Stadlmeir, said, "I don't think it would be an earthquake, but what could it be? It's just really odd." Somers Point resident, Bob Mower, explained, "There was a rattling of my windows and I felt the house shake just a little bit - it was unusual." Stadlmeir told NBC40, "It has to be something really big to be witnessed in such a widespread area of South Jersey." The reports vary from region to region. Atlantic county emergency management officials confirmed with the U.S. Geological Survey that it was not an earthquake. The next thought was that military training or an aircraft flying by might have caused the shakes. Both the 177th Fighter Wing in Egg Harbor Township and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst confirmed none of their aircrafts were in the area at that time.
