US Bombers practice nuclear strikes on North Korea

United States B-52 bombers carried out simulated nuclear bombing raids on North Korea as part of ongoing U.S.-South Korean military exercises, Pentagon officials said on Monday.

Pentagon press secretary George Little told reporters that B-52 bombers from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, conducted a training mission over South Korea March 8 during war games known as Exercise Foal Eagle.

“It’s not any secret that we are in the midst of sending a very strong signal that we have a firm commitment to the alliance with our South Korean allies,” Little said.

Fukushima: Crucial system fails at Japan's quake-damaged nuclear plant

Workers at the tsunami-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan are trying to fix a crucial part of the plant that stopped working today.

The system that cools hundreds of spent fuel rods that are stored at the facility has stopped working, which could have dangerous consequences, CBC News producer Craig Dale has learned.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company confirmed that it had a partial power failure Monday evening and then discovered the problem with an electricity supply unit.

Currently the cooling systems in reactors one, three and four are not operational and representatives from TEPCO are unsure how to fix them.

U.S. confirms Syrian aircraft fired rockets into Lebanon

The State Department confirmed on Monday that Syrian government aircraft fired rockets into northern Lebanon and it described the incident as "a significant escalation."

"We can confirm what you are seeing in the press, that regime jets and helicopters did fire rockets into northern Lebanon," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters at her daily briefing. "This constitutes a significant escalation in the violations of Lebanese sovereignty that the Syrian regime has been guilty of. These kinds of violations of sovereignty are absolutely unacceptable."

Both men died in the vigilante attack in the town of Samanod, about 90km (55 miles) north of Cairo.

The lynchings come a week after the attorney general's office encouraged civilians to arrest criminals and hand them over to police.

Beth Ditto Arrested: 12 Police Cars sent to scene to arrest singer after she was caught Screaming Obama! Obama!

Beth Ditto, a singer in the US indie rock band Gossip, has been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, police have said.

The star, real name Mary Beth Patterson, was reportedly detained after being denied service at the Bungalo Bar in Portland because she appeared to be drunk.

She left the bar and then "walked out in the middle of the street, threw off her shoes and purse and screamed Obama! Obama!", a source told Willamette Week.

The extraordinary thing is that there hasn't yet been a bank run across the Mediterranean....Time for that yet!

It is irrational to start a bank run, Mervyn King once observed, but rational to join one. It remains to be seen whether the EU has irrationally started one with its expropriations in Cyprus; but there is no question that it is rational for anyone with a bank account in the Mediterranean eurozone states to join in.

Until now, the EU has sought to reassure depositors by guaranteeing – absolutely guaranteeing – that savings up to €100,000 are secure, a pledge solemnly repeated by the Cyprus government. Any Cypriots who believed that assurance now know better. The EU got around its promise through a disgusting ruse. The banks are not technically bust, and so the deposit insurance doesn't apply; and the seizure is theoretically a wealth tax rather than a loss.

What would you do now if you had savings in a Greek, Spanish or Portuguese bank? Or an Italian bank? Or even a French bank? It's not as though you're getting any interest anyway. And now it turns out that, despite all the promises, your savings are vulnerable to arbitrary confiscation.

In theory, the European Central Bank is ready to step in in the event of a panic by depositors. But its funds have already been heavily tapped. Italian banks now hold €281 billion in ECB loans, Spanish banks €278 billion. Huge as these numbers are, they are only a tiny proportion of the total banking sectors of those two countries: less than 8 per cent.

Cyprus is not a one-off, but a grisly forerunner. As I argue in the Daily Mail, Brussels has plainly decided that the only way out of the euro crisis is to come after savers. A bank run, as I say, is rational.

Cypriots 'betrayed' by EU and their OWN Government

The great EU Robbery....You think they won't do it to another Country?

Bruno Waterfield in Brussels has reported that Britain had no advance warning of the plan to raid the deposits of Cyprus savers, despite the many expats involved. An official told him:
We were informed same time as other non-eurozone countries: when the deal was announced by the Eurogroup.

Eurogroup meetings and their outcomes are usually formally presented to all EU finance ministers at the following Ecofin meeting.
Of course, there was no following Ecofin meeting.

Drone secrecy raises public suspicions, former Pentagon counsel says

A former Defense Department counsel said he is a skeptic when it comes to a proposed "drone court," but greater government openness about its decision-making on targeted killings of terrorism suspects overseas would help alleviate public suspicions about those operations.

"The problem is that the American public is suspicious of executive power shrouded in secrecy," Jeh Johnson said in a speech prepared for delivery on Monday at a conference at Fordham Law School in New York.

Cyprus reworks divisive bank tax, delays vote, Keeps People from their Savings

Cypriot ministers were trying to revise a plan to seize money from bank deposits before a parliamentary vote on Tuesday that will secure the island's financial rescue or could lead to its default, with reverberations across the euro zone.

The weekend announcement that Cyprus would impose a tax on bank accounts as part of a 10 billion euro ($13 billion) bailout by the European Union broke with previous practice that depositors' savings were sacrosanct. The euro and stock markets fell on concern the euro zone crisis was returning.

Cyprus Bailout: BANKS TO STAY SHUT UNTIL AT LEAST THURSDAY!

Cyprus has ordered its banks to stay shut until Thursday as the government seeks to alter the terms of a controversial EU bailout that taxes savings.

The uncertainty comes as Russia's finance minister said his country would consider restructuring its loans to Cyprus.

Russian energy giant Gazprom has also reportedly offered financial assistance to Cyprus in exchange for access to the island's gas reserves.

Funny Medicine: Vein-opening MS treatment shows no benefit in trials, except for everyone else who has had it done (What?)

TL;DR summary:

Multiple Sclerosis has a potential cure in an operation that involves expanding the veins in the neck to allow better blood drainage from the brain. Procedure discovered by an Italian doctor, and he put it out there for testing.

Patients tried to get it done in Canada but were rejected, so they started going to other countries to get it done to great effect. Health Canada didn't like this, so they asked patients to stay in country and that they would do a "test" to determine how effective the procedure was.

Their conclusion: it doesn't work, don't waste your time.

Read article here (published two days ago):

http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2013/03/15/multiple-sclerosis-ccsvi.html

Notice this:

90% of the comments say the following:

-- "Glad tests show it doesn't work."
-- "I'm glad I didn't get this procedure done."
-- "False sense of hope" / "Placebo effect"
-- "One of my patients got it and died. So sad."

Every comment has the same quality:

-- Reads like an essay
-- Or, incredibly short and brief
-- Never any follow up

What you'll also notice in the other 10% of comments:

-- "I had this done, and years later, I'm completely cured."
-- "Symptom X was destroying me. I'm completely cured."
-- "MS Medication was slowly killing me. I no longer need it."

These particular comments have the following quantities:

-- Written with spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes, etc.
-- Tell a personal narrative

Under the majority of the 10% comments, there's a reply:

-- "Placebo effect."
-- "You don't know what you're talking about."
-- "I'm sure doctors know more than you do."

Now, remember this article?

http://consciouslifenews.com/paid-internet-shill-shadowy-groups-manipulate-internet-opinion-debate/1147073/

It's good thing that we have "tests" that determine whether or not medical procedures work. What do you think the decision will now be for the majority of MS sufferers who come across this high profile piece?

Mission accomplished.

The new war in Europe?

The European Union was founded in reaction to what I call ‘old war’ – the wars of the twentieth century. Even though material interests ought logically to lead to increased political cooperation, contemporary European politics, or the absence of politics, suggest instead the possibility of what I call a ‘new war’.

Ulrich Beck, in his wonderful book German Europe to be launched at LSE on Thursday, says that Europe was founded not on the logic of war but on the logic of risk. The European Union, he points out, is based on a lot of ‘nots’. It is not a nation, not a state and not an international organisation. States were built on the logic of war.

The European Union is a different kind of polity constructed in reaction to the risk of war and now, in reaction, to the risk of economic collapse. Economists argue that the monetary union was a big mistake in the absence of political union. But Beck points out that the point was just the opposite – to create a monetary union that would establish material interest in political union. Without a monetary union there would be no momentum for political union.

EU: ‘We are in danger of a social rebellion’ – Juncker

The former head of the Eurogroup is worried about the consequences of the austerity policies of the European Union. Social unrest will become a major problem if the European leaders fail to adjust their austerity programs.

Before the start of the recent EU summit, over 15,000 protesters gathered in front on the European Commission building in Bruxelles. Fearing that the number of protesters will spiral out of control, the Belgian police forbid all rallies and managed to create an illusion of calm. It is obvious that the problem can’t be solved through banning protests, because the root of the protest lies in the economic policy of the European Union.

Russia Is Cooking With Gas In Cyprus

The Russians have made Cyprus an offer it can refuse, but only if the EU throws more money at the problem.

Gazprom, the world’s largest extractor of natural gas has offered to bail out the Bank of Cyprus in return for effective exclusive control of the gas reserves off the coast of the island.

This would mean Cyprus does not need to accept the terms of the EU bailout offer.

The Cypriot government’s motives are obvious - it can leverage the Russian offer into getting a better deal from the EU to try and placate its furious voters.

The motives of the EU are obvious. To keep Cyprus inside the Eurozone in order to save the euro.

Cypriot president has EU's support, Commission says

Cyprus has the European Commission's full support in seeking to bring stability and economic growth back to the eastern Mediterranean island, the EU executive said on Monday.

"We fully support the efforts of President (Nicos) Anastasiades and the Cypriot people in their efforts to bring financial stability to Cyprus and to help steer the country back onto a path of sustainable growth," Commission spokesman Simon O'Connor told a regular briefing.

Germany's 'ideological' call to increase EU powers

Berlin has quietly circulated its ideas in Brussels in an informal paper dated Feb 1, seen exclusively by The Daily Telegraph. It is signed by 14 EU countries, including Italy, the Netherlands and Spain - but not Britain.

The paper says Lady Ashton should control the European Commission's "neighbourhood policy," which covers relations with 16 countries on the EU's eastern and southern rim.

The Baroness should handle negotiations of EU treaties with leading nations such as China and Russia, the paper says. It also calls for her to take "overall authority" on EU aid to African and Caribbean countries.

The Labour peer currently manages a budget worth the equivalent of £420 million a year. If the German proposal goes through in full, it would balloon to more than £8 billion a year.

Budget: Chancellor 'To Overborrow By £8bn'

The Chancellor will be forced to reveal a downgraded growth forecast and a £8bn borrowing overshoot in this week's Budget, it has been predicted.

The Ernst & Young Item Club said the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) was likely to slash its growth forecasts to just under 1% for 2013 from 1.2%, adding to pressure for bolder moves to kick-start the economy.

Weak income tax receipts, disappointing revenues from the sale of the 4G spectrum and a lower-than-expected boost from the Bank of England's asset purchase programme were also expected to see the OBR reveal that public borrowing has climbed to more than £88bn this year, it added.

Cyprus Bailout: Terms Shift Amid Russian Offer...

Confusion has grown over terms of an EU bailout for Cyprus and its tax on savings, as fears spread over renewed financial insecurity in the eurozone.

The uncertainty comes as Russia's finance minister said his country will consider restructuring its loans to Cyprus.

Significant Russian funds are held in the struggling Mediterranean nation.

Reports have also emerged of a Gazprom financial offer to Cyprus in exchange for access to the island's gas reserves.

“The Great EU Bank Robbery”.....Be careful who you vote for!

People this morning are still in utter shock that their savings could just be taken without their consent to bail out yet some more Banks, but would this have even be possible under the previous government of Cyprus? Simple answer is NO, of course Like Portugal, Ireland, Spain and Greece they would need control within the country of question to screw the people out of everything they own. AND they have openly said they may even do this to other countries savers as well.

3 Weeks ago, Cyprus elected their own wolf in sheep's clothing European People's Party (EPP) Headboy Nicos Anastasiades.

Of Course EPP was so Delighted with the results, they had the following to say on their Website.

Has he Inspired you so far! he sure has the People in Brussels.

They went on to say the following:

“On behalf of the entire political family of the EPP, I congratulate my good friend Nicos Anastasiades for his impressive electoral victory. The people of Cyprus have sent a strong message to Europe by putting their trust into a person that has the leadership qualities and the credibility to bring the country out of the current economic crisis.

Cyprus now has a reliable President that inspires confidence in Europe. In spite of the difficulties in the negotiations for the Cyprus bailout agreement, Nicos Anastasiades can count on the support of the EPP.

And yet there is more, they have seriously written this on their website

Note to editors:
The EPP is the largest and most influential European-level political party of the centre-right, which currently includes 74 member-parties from 40 countries, the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, 16 EU and 6 non-EU heads of state and government, 13 members of the European Commission and the largest Group in the European Parliament.

Also from their own site:# As the largest political group in a Parliament, the EPP Group is in a stronger position than any other to set that body‘s political agenda and to win its most critical votes. In seeking to maximise its influence, the EPP Group has been able to draw on the fact that the European Parliament has become increasingly influential within the European Union.

Why does it not worry people that 1 political party has so much control within the world? they have enough members in the EU parliament and European Commission to dominate and control any vote which takes place in their favor  the vice presidents and presidents are EPP members, and the following countries are now headed by EPP Members

Steubenville Rape Case: More Charges Possible

Teenagers who failed to come forward after two high school footballers raped a 16-year-old girl could be charged, Ohio's top prosecutor has said.

Trent Mays, 17, and Ma'lik Richmond, 16, broke down in court on Sunday when they were found guilty of raping the girl at an alcohol-fuelled party in the small town of Steubenville in August.

Immediately after the verdict, attorney general Mike DeWine said a grand jury would investigate whether other people, including students, the school's principal, coaches and parents, broke the law by not speaking up after the attack.

Cyprus/EU Grand Theft sends euro, shares tumbling

The surprise decision by euro zone leaders to part-fund a rescue of Cyprus by taxing bank deposits sent shockwaves through financial markets on Monday, with shares, the euro and the bonds of its southern members all tumbling.

The euro zone struck a deal on Saturday to hand Cyprus a bailout worth 10 billion euros ($13 billion), but defied warnings - including from the European Central Bank - and imposed a levy that will see those with cash in the island's banks lose between 6.75 and 9.9 percent of their money.

Parliament in Cyprus was due to vote on the measure later on Monday and the government was looking at ways to reduce the impact on small savers.

Pope Francis Warns Against ‘Demonic Worldliness’

When he said Mass for the College of Cardinals in the Sistine Chapel on Thursday, newly elected Pope Francis I warned these princes of the church against professing what he called “the worldliness of the devil, a demonic worldliness.”

“Anyone who does not pray to the Lord prays to the devil,” Francis said, quoting Leon Bloy, a French writer who died in 1917, and who converted from agnosticism to Catholicism.

“When we profess Christ without the Cross, we are not disciples of the Lord, we are worldly: we may be bishops, priests, cardinals, popes, but not disciples of the Lord,” the pope told the cardinals.

'Pinstripe Rapist': Smartly Dressed Man Hunted

A smartly-dressed man who raped a woman in a "truly vile attack" is being sought by police.

She met him outside the Nicholson nightclub in Railway Street, Altrincham, Greater Manchester, at about 2.10am on Sunday and they walked off together.

CNN under fire for sympathetic reporting on ruined 'promising lives' of Steubenville rape students

CNN's coverage of the Steubenville rape story has been roundly criticized after the cable news network focused on the devastating effect on the 'promising' lives of the rapists and not the 16-year-old victim.

As the breaking news of the guilty verdict against Steubenville High School football players Trent Mays, 17, and Ma'lik Richmond, 16, was relayed from the Ohio court-room on Sunday, anchor Candy Crowley turned to correspondent Poppy Harlow, who seemed more affected by the tearful reactions of the two teens.

Harlow described the scene in the court as, 'Incredibly difficult, even for me, to watch what happened as these two young men that had such promising futures, star football players, very good students, literally watched as they believed their lives fell apart.'

Families spend £3,000 a year less leaving Osborne with a £136billion black hole in the economy

Families have curbed their spending by more than £3,000 a year since the economic downturn, it was revealed today.

The great EU bank robbery: British taxpayers to bail out victims of outrageous raid on Cyprus accounts

UK taxpayers will have to compensate thousands of Britons hit by a shock raid on bank accounts in Cyprus.

The debt-stricken island, which is home to around 3,000 British military personnel and civil servants, is being given an £8.7billion EU rescue package.

But – in a move condemned as ‘robbery’ – Germany says it will not fund the emergency deal unless every saver with a deposit account contributes via a bank tax.

  • Cypriot banks banned online transfers and emptied cashpoints to stop withdrawals;
  • The levy could be automatically taken from accounts as early as Wednesday;
  • British tourists were told to ensure they had multiple sources of money;
  • The chief minister of the euro area refused to rule out similar levies elsewhere;
  • Analysts said the raid could fall foul of the European Convention on Human Rights;
  • Traders are braced for turbulence on international stock markets today.

Syria Rebels Appear to Make Big Weapons Seizure....I am sure the Un-Armed Syrian Civilians are breathing easier at this news

Syrian rebels appear to have seized a large number of weapons from a government arms depot near the northern city of Aleppo.

Activists posted several videos to YouTube on Saturday and Sunday showing crates of weapons and ammunition they say were seized from the arms depot in the town of Khan Toman.

In one video, Islamist rebels loaded dozens of the crates onto a truck. In another, rebels inspected the interior of a seized building containing crates of rockets and other arms.

life found 11km below sea level in deepest known point on the surface of the Earth

Scientist have found a thriving community of microbes living at the deepest known point on the surface of the Earth – a massive underwater canyon in the Pacific Ocean 11km (6.8 miles) below sea level.

The bacteria were recovered from muddy sediments at a point underneath the central west Pacific called Challenger Deep in the huge Mariana Trench, a gigantic chasm in the seabed which is big enough and deep enough to swallow Mount Everest entirely.

Marine biologists said they were astonished to find such an abundance of microbial life-forms living off the dead and decaying matter that sinks to the deepest parts of the ocean where pressures are more than a thousand times greater than at sea level.

Steal from Cyprus Savers......Euro plunges

The euro plunged and traders squeezed the yen sharply higher on Monday in Asia as news that Cyprus' bailout plan includes taxing depositors was taken as a dangerous precedent that could ultimately trigger bank runs elsewhere in the region.

Euro zone finance ministers want to tap Cyprus' savers in order for the country to receive a 10 billion euro ($13 billion) bailout, and this decision caused a run on cash after its announcement on Saturday morning. Cyprus was working on a last-minute proposal to soften the blow after a parliamentary vote on the measure was postponed until Monday, a government source said.

Europe's social shock-absorbers under strain

Grigoris Lemonis, a 73-year-old Athens pensioner, uses his 580 euro ($760) monthly state pension to support his wife and the family of his son, an unemployed cook with two small children and a wife who works occasionally as a cleaner.

Three-generation families surviving on a single income are increasingly common across southern Europe as mass unemployment tears at the fabric of closely knit societies.

The continent's social shock-absorbers are creaking under the strain of a prolonged economic crisis that began in 2008 and engulfed the euro zone in a sovereign debt crisis from 2010.

China criticizes U.S. anti-missile North Korea plan

China said on Monday U.S. plans to bolster missile defenses in response to provocations by North Korea would only intensify antagonism, and urged Washington to act prudently.

Analysis: Cyprus bank levy risks dangerous euro zone precedent

A hit imposed on Cypriot bank depositors by the euro zone has shocked and alarmed politicians and bankers who fear the currency bloc has set a precedent that will unnerve investors and citizens alike.

After all-night Friday talks, euro finance ministers agreed a 10 billion euro ($13 billion) bailout for the stricken Mediterranean island and said since so much of its debt was rooted in its banks, that sector would have to bear a large part of the burden.

In a radical departure from previous aid packages - and one that gave rise to incredulity and anger across Cyprus - the ministers are forcing the nation's savers to pay up to 10 percent of their deposits to raise almost 6 billion euros.

Press Regulation: Politicians 'Reach' A Deal

Politicians have reached a deal on plans to regulate the press, Labour's Deputy Leader Harriet Harman has told Sky News.

However, a Downing Street source insisted cross-party agreement was "very close" but there would be further talks this morning.

The details are expected to be revealed in the House of Commons later, but it appears a Royal Charter will be created, underpinned by law, so that it cannot be watered down or changed.

Germany says suspected bird flu not confirmed in final test

A case of suspected H5N1 bird flu that had been discovered during initial tests on a poultry farm in the eastern state of Brandenburg could not be confirmed in final testing, the state agriculture ministry said on Saturday.

The H5N1 virus mainly affects birds but occasionally jumps to people. Experts fear it might mutate into a form that could spread easily among humans, who have no natural immunity to it.

Bird flu is present in Asian countries including China, Cambodia and Indonesia. It has also been reported in wild birds in parts of Europe.

Pet duck in Perth found with bird flu

Nearly 100 birds in Perth have been euthanased as a precaution after a pet duck was found to have a type of bird flu.

The state's Department of Agriculture has confirmed to AAP that the domestic duck, who lived at a property north of Perth, was found to have the low pathogen H5 strain of the virus.

Department livestock biosecurity director Michelle Rodan said tests had confirmed the strain of H5 influenza was not the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus, which affects poultry and humans in much of Asia.

Combination of bird, human flu can be dangerous, warns study

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), have confirmed that genes from bird flu and human flu combined together can create dangerous new flu strains, mainly in the bird flu prevalent countries including Bangladesh.

The flu season this year is expected to be lengthier and the disease could be pandemic if bird flu becomes highly contagious among humans, researchers predicted in a study, published on Friday.

In Bangladesh, so far eight people had died of bird flue until 2010. However, some 800 people were infected and later cured until 2012, according to the Ministry of Health.

Suspect in Libya may have Benghazi role

The United States has "pretty good indications" that a man now held in Libya may have been involved in the deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee said Sunday.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told CNN last week that the FBI had been able to question a man identified by sources as Faraj al-Shibli. But it was still not clear what role, if any, al-Shibli may have played in the September 11 attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. A source briefed by Western intelligence officials said al-Shibli had recently returned to Libya from Pakistan.

North Korean threats getting louder

N. Korea: No bargaining over nuclear

A day after the United States promised new missile defense interceptors to guard against a North Korean attack, Pyongyang responded Saturday by blasting the Americans' "hostile policy" and saying it won't negotiate with them over its nuclear program.

"(North Korea's) nuclear weapons serve as an all-powerful treasured sword for protecting the sovereignty and security of the country," a foreign ministry spokesman said, according to the state-run KCNA news agency. "Therefore, they cannot be disputed ... as long as the U.S. nuclear threat and hostile policy persist."

The stern statement marked the latest in the war of words, and more, pitting North Korea against the United States and, in fact, many other countries worldwide.

The Honduran police death squads responsible for murdering hundreds of civilians while the U.S. pays out millions of dollars in law enforcement aid

A disturbing new investigation has found rogue police death squads are operating with impunity across Honduras, taking the law into their own hands and acting as judge, jury and executioner. Despite millions of dollars in U.S. aid to Honduras aimed at professionalizing the country's police, the AP has learned in the past three-years, Honduran prosecutors have received as many as 150 formal complaints about death squad-style killings in the capital of Tegucigalpa, and at least 50 more in the economic hub of San Pedro Sula.

Man dies after being given a kidney infected with rabies from dead U.S. serviceman as doctors rush to save three others who received his organs

A Maryland man has died after contracting rabies from a kidney received more than a year ago from an infected donor as doctors fear three other patients who received organs may also have the potentially fatal disease, officials said today.

The recipients of the donor's heart, liver and other kidney are getting anti-rabies shots, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The donor fell ill in 2011 and later died at a Florida Hospital. Rabies wasn't suspected as the cause and testing for the disease was not performed before the organs were given out, the CDC said.

For centuries men and women fought and died for freedom of expression. Who are Miliband and Clegg to throw it away?

Ahead of today's vote on the future of Britain's free press, DOMINIC SANDBROOK says the self-appointed crusaders miss the crucial point that once we move towards statutory regulation, something precious will have been lost forever. If Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and their allies in the Hacked Off campaign should prevail, the Press will be regulated by statute for the first time since the aftermath of the Glorious Revolution of 1688.

Syria rebels seize security compound

Syrian rebels on Sunday seized a Syrian military intelligence compound in the southern Hauran Plain near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, stepping up attacks in the strategic region which stretches to the outskirts of the capital Damascus, rebel commanders said.

The frontier, quiet since Israel and Syria agreed on a US-brokered ceasefire in 1974, has turned volatile in recent weeks, after opposition brigades stepped up attacks against army and intelligence compounds dotting the agricultural plain stretching from the border with Jordan to the Damascus outskirts.

Cyprus Savings Tax May Be Cut To Soften Blow,,, But increased for the Middle Class and Rich

Officials in Cyprus are reportedly trying to renegotiate a eurozone bailout deal in order to soften the impact of a levy on smaller savers.

Authorities had planned a 6.7% tax on deposits under 100,000 euros (£85,454), triggering queues at cash machines as people in Cyprus rushed to withdraw their money.

But the country's government is thought to be discussing cutting the tax rate to 3% while raising the rate for deposits over 100,000 euros from 9.9% to 12.5%.
