Car Bomb Blast Kills At Least 45 In Pakistan

A car bomb has exploded outside a mosque in southern Pakistan killing at least 45 people - including children - and wounding up to 150 others.

The blast went off in a Shiite area of the city Karachi as people were leaving evening prayers.

Initial reports suggested the bomb was attached to a motorcycle, but officials said later that the damage indicated that explosives had been planted in a car.

Baby Girl 'Cured' Of HIV

A US baby girl born with HIV has been cured after very early treatment with standard drug therapy, researchers say.

The Mississippi child is now two-and-a-half years old and has been off HIV drugs for about a year with no signs of infection.

More testing needs to be done to see if the treatment would have the same effect on other children.

Sky's Ireland correspondent David Blevins said: "It would appear that police have managed to thwart yet another attempted attack by dissident Republicans.

"A huge security operation has been under way for several hours now but in the last few minutes Sky sources have confirmed to us that police intercepted at least three mortars last night.

"One hundred families have been evacuated from their homes and we understand that two men, aged 35 and 37, have been detained.

Israel launches Palestinian-only buses amid accusations of racial segregation

From Monday Palestinians travelling to day jobs into central Israel from the West Bank will be urged to board special buses at a checkpoint instead of the regular services used by Israelis.

The scheme was drawn up by the Israeli transport ministry after residents in two Jewish settlements complained that Palestinians travellers on the Trans-Samaria road – also known as Highway 5 – between the West Bank and Tel Aviv were a potential threat.

There were also reports of overcrowding and fights between Israeli and Palestinian passengers.

The transport ministry insisted the move was “designed to improve the service for Palestinians entering Israel”.

But some human rights groups called it “blatant racism” that resembled South African-style apartheid.

Scientists say baby born with HIV apparently cured, only second ever case

A baby born with the AIDS virus appears to have been cured, scientists announced Sunday, describing the case of a child from Mississippi who's now 2 1/2 and has been off medication for about a year with no signs of infection.

There's no guarantee the child will remain healthy, although sophisticated testing uncovered just traces of the virus' genetic material still lingering. If so, it would mark only the world's second reported cure.

Specialists say Sunday's announcement, at a major AIDS meeting in Atlanta, offers promising clues for efforts to eliminate HIV infection in children, especially in AIDS-plagued African countries where too many babies are born with the virus.

"You could call this about as close to a cure, if not a cure, that we've seen," Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health, who is familiar with the findings, told The Associated Press.

'I am one of the Fukushima fifty': One of the men who risked their lives to prevent a catastrophe shares his story

It was, recalls Atsufumi Yoshizawa, a suicide mission: volunteering to return to a dangerously radioactive nuclear power plant on the verge of tipping out of control.

As he said goodbye to his colleagues they saluted him, like soldiers in battle. The wartime analogies were hard to avoid: in the international media he was a kamikaze, a samurai or simply one of the heroic Fukushima 50. The descriptions still embarrass him. “I’m not a hero,” he says. “I was just trying to do my job.”

A stoic, soft-spoken man dressed in the blue utility suit of his embattled employer Tokyo Electric Power Co., (Tepco) Mr Yoshizawa still finds it hard to dredge up memories of fighting to stop catastrophe at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Two years later, debate still rages about responsibility for the planet’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, and its impact. Fish caught near the plant this month contained over 5,000 times safe radiation limits, according to state broadcaster NHK.

Domestic drones set for widespread expansion

They hover over Hollywood film sets and professional sports events. They track wildfires in Colorado, survey Kansas farm crops and vineyards in California. They inspect miles of industrial pipeline and monitor wildlife, river temperatures and volcanic activity.

They also locate marijuana fields, reconstruct crime scenes and spot illegal immigrants breaching U.S. borders.

Tens of thousands of domestic drones are zipping through U.S. skies, often flouting tight federal restrictions on drone use that require even the police and the military to get special permits.

Nathan Glauber was pronounced dead at Beth Israel Hospital, while his wife died at Bellevue, police said.

Political uncertainty deepens in Bulgaria as thousands protest

Tens of thousands of Bulgarians furious over poverty and corruption protested in more than a dozen cities on Sunday, as a lack of clear support for any political party mired the country in limbo days after the government was toppled.

Prime Minister Boiko Borisov quit along with his center-right government on Wednesday after two weeks of sometimes violent protests. He remains in office until an interim government is appointed, most likely next week, which will take Bulgaria to elections due on May 12.

Optimist Netanyahu says Iran using nuclear talks to "buy time" for bomb

Renewed international efforts to negotiate curbs on Iran's disputed nuclear program have backfired by giving it more time to work on building a bomb, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday.

His remarks on the inconclusive February 26-27 meeting between Iran and six world powers signaled impatience by Israel, which has threatened to launch preemptive war on its arch-foe, possibly in the coming months, if it deems diplomacy a dead end.

Libya gas exports to Italy halted after militias clash

Gas exports to Italy from the Mellitah complex in northwestern Libya have been suspended since Saturday following clashes between militias in the area, an official at the National Oil Corporation (NOC) said.

"Gas exports have been completely halted," Mustafa Sunalla, an NOC deputy chairman said on Sunday.

The firefight was said to have begun after an argument escalated between local former rebel fighters in the area and guards at Mellitah, a security source said.

Kremlin casts doubt on ruling after Texas mother is cleared over death of adopted Russian son

Russia officials voiced their skepticism on Saturday about the U.S. autopsy on a 3-year-old adopted Russian boy in Texas, demanding further investigation as thousands rallied in Moscow to support the Kremlin ban on U.S. adoptions of Russian children.

Max Shatto's death in January, ruled accidental, came a month after Moscow passed a ban on international adoptions in retaliation for a new U.S. law targeting alleged Russian human rights violators.

Russian officials have pointed at Max's case to defend the ban, which has drawn strong public criticism and Russians took to the street in Moscow in a rally to support the government's measures to stop American adoptions.

£12.4billion! Taxpayers to foot a hidden bill for bailed-out banks (as Lloyds boss gets £1.5m bonus)

Taxpayers are in line to lose £12.4billion on their emergency bailouts of Lloyds and Royal Bank of Scotland, it emerged last night.

The hidden costs, incurred because Labour paid too much for shares in the banks in 2008, were written off and buried in Budget documents in 2010.

But they were unearthed yesterday by Treasury officials as Lloyds indicated it is likely to start offloading the taxpayer’s 39 per cent stake when the bank’s share price, currently 53p, hits 61p.

The 61p target is viewed as the ‘break even’ point at which Lloyds shares can be sold without incurring further loss. The ‘break-even’ figure for RBS is around 400p.

Revealed: One in four of the UK's top companies pay no tax while we give THEM millions in credits

Almost one in four of Britain’s biggest listed companies paid no corporation tax in this country last year – and almost half fail to disclose their tax payments to the UK at all, according to research by The Mail on Sunday.

Analysis of the latest annual reports and accounts of all the companies in the FTSE 100 found that 47 companies gave no obvious figures for tax paid in Britain.

Of the 53 who did, 12 showed they paid no tax at all and, of these, six actually received a tax credit.

Gay sex rings, 'The Filth' corrupting the Vatican...and why the Pope REALLY quit

The former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger wrung his hands above his head in triumph as he emerged as Pope on to the balcony of St Peter’s eight years ago. He had won!

He had longed to be Pope. He has loved being Pope. He expected to die as Pope.

Two weeks ago he announced in Latin he wasn’t up to it any more. Up to what? He spent most of his time writing and took time off to tinkle on the piano and stroke his cat.

He’s been waited on hand and foot. He has his handsome secretary Georg Ganswein to do his every bidding.

Resignation isn’t in Benedict’s vocabulary. The real reason he has quit is far more spectacular.

It is to save the Catholic Church from ignominy: he has voluntarily delivered himself up as a sacrificial lamb to purge the Church of what he calls ‘The Filth’. And it must have taken courage.

5 ways North Korea keeps getting stranger

It seems North Korea's new leader Kim Jong Un is carrying on his father's strange tradition: mixing a fascination with American culture with a hatred of the United States.

Kim has made it quite clear that his country's February nuclear test marks a new phase of confrontation with the United States, which Pyongyang has described as "the sworn enemy of the Korean people."

Yet that hasn't stopped Pyongyang from welcoming a few dignitaries from this "sworn enemy" nation, including a top Google executive and a few basketball stars.

No one knows if it's all part of an organized effort to woo North Korea into diplomacy by appealing to its leader's interest in American culture. Yet one thing is for sure: This love-hate relationship has sparked some odd stories out of the Hermit Kingdom. Here's a look at some of the most recent ones we've come across:

1. Kim Jong Un: Dennis Rodman's new BFF
2. Google executive urges country with barely any electricity to embrace the Internet
3. Famous Americans apparently aren't the only ones heading to Pyongyang
In the wake of the Schmidt and Rodman visits, Bloomberg Businessweek looked at just how many Westerners are heading to North Korea for its closely monitored, government-run tours. Surprisingly, it found a nearly 20% increase in visits since 2011.
4. Get your North Korean education ... in Tokyo
5. Dreaming of annihilating the United States, to the tune of 'We Are The World'

Assad accuses Britain of being 'naive'

Syrian President Bashar Assad has accused the British government of being "naive, confused and unrealistic" in its approach to the conflict in his country and warned of dire consequences if the West armed its rebels.

In an interview with the Sunday Times Mr Assad said Britain was sacrificing peace talks to push for an end to an EU arms embargo, which would allow rebels to be armed.

He warned this would accelerate the road to war, rejecting the possibility of help from Britain to end the conflict, saying: "We do not expect an arsonist to be a firefighter."

EU banker pay cap 'threatens thousands of British jobs'........Great Being Part of the EU isn't it?

Michael Fallon, the enterprise minister, said that the Treasury will demand at meetings in Brussels this week that the proposals are flexible enough to allow UK banks and foreign banks based in London to pay competitive rates.

He said that although the new regulations on remuneration would only affect the highest paid, it could ultimately mean whole banking divisions being moved away from the UK as banks seek to operate in the more flexible markets of Asia and the US.

“There is a very special risk we have here in the UK, which does not apply to any other European country, which is that we have major international banks that are based in London but have branches all over the world,” Mr Fallon said.

US faces huge job losses as Obama orders $85bn cuts....Watch the Middles Class get Screwed Again!!

Barack Obama warned on Saturday of a "ripple effect" through the US economy that would cost hundreds of thousands of jobs after he reluctantly signed an order to begin a huge $85bn (£56bn) programme of government cuts.

The president even called the act "not smart" on the morning after the cuts officially became government policy, in a move that has been dubbed "sequestration" and has plunged Washington into another political crisis.

"The pain will be real. Many middle-class families will have their lives disrupted in a significant way," Obama said in his weekly address. He added that up to 750,000 jobs could be lost and half a percentage point knocked off America's economic growth this year. "This will cause a ripple effect across the economy. Businesses will suffer because customers will have less money to spend ... These cuts are not smart. They will hurt our economy and cost us jobs," he said.

Protests in Egypt ahead of US Sec of State's meeting with Mursi

People angry at what they perceive as US support for Egyptian president Mohamed Mursi have been protesting during a visit by the US Secretary of State, John Kerry.

It is Kerry’s first official trip to Egypt and he is keen to stress the value of political consensus, despite Liberal and leftist parties planning a boycott of next month’s parliamentary elections.

“We’re not here to interfere. We’re here to listen. We’re not here to urge anybody to take one particular action or another, though we have our point of view, and certainly I will express that: what we support is democracy,” said Kerry.

Bangladesh deploys troops as 16 killed in fresh protests

Bangladesh deployed troops in the north of the country Sunday after 16 more people were killed in a fresh wave of violence over the conviction of Islamist leaders for war crimes in the Muslim-majority nation.

Thirteen were shot dead in the north and northeast and one policeman was killed in clashes with protesters in the western district of Jhenidah, police officials told AFP, adding two people were killed late Saturday.

In the northern district of Bogra at least 10,000 protesters armed with sticks, home-made bombs and other weapons attacked five police stations, forcing police to open fire on them, police Inspector Shamsul Haq said.

In talks with Iran, reality tempers hopes on nuclear deal

Despite unexpected progress in last week’s nuclear talks, U.S. and European governments face a difficult path to a possible deal with Iran, U.S. officials and experts warn, as politics and a deep-seated mistrust on both sides threaten to scuttle even the modest gains made so far.

Only days after negotiations that Iran hailed as a possible “turning point” in the nuclear crisis, diplomats and analysts offered a sober assessment of the obstacles to a genuine breakthrough, including factional fighting inside Iran over whether to agree to limits on Iran’s nuclear program.

Assad: We'll retaliate against Israeli airstrike

Bashar Assad vowed that Syria would retaliate against Israel for an airstrike on a weapons convoy in the Damascus area last month, which foreign news outlets attributed to the IDF.

"Retaliation does not mean missile for missile or bullet for bullet. Our own way does not have to be announced," the Syrian president said in a televised interview with The Sunday Times.

Five killed, nine trapped in landslide in eastern Philippines

Five workers were killed and nine others trapped in a landslide at a construction site in the eastern Philippines, police said Saturday, dpa reported.

The victims were building anti-erosion railings on the side of a highland road in Kananga town in Leyte province, 540 kilometres south-east of Manila, when the mountain collapsed on them, said police Senior Inspector Antonio Angcay.

Steam pipes also exploded when hit by the landslide, which occurred after days of heavy rains, he said.

Reality Bites For PM On Secret Food Bank Trip

The Prime Minister has made a secret visit to his local food bank, after criticism that Downing Street does not understand the increasing role they are playing in 'Austerity Britain'.

Mr Cameron visited the charity, which operates out of a church hall in his constituency in Oxfordshire, and spoke to volunteers who supply up to 10 families each week with emergency food parcels.

Nationally, the use of food banks has grown, with the largest operator, the Trussell Trust, now running 310 centres. The trust helped 260,000 people in the past year, an increase of 60,000 on the year before.
