Mysterious "beam of light" blamed for circle of fire in Tasmania

Tasmanian police and firefighters are unable to explain the source of a beam of light which reportedly fell from the sky and formed a circle of fire in a Hobart suburb.

Early yesterday morning police and fire crews received calls from concerned residents in Carnegie Street at Claremont, who reported seeing a bright light igniting a fire in a nearby paddock.

Tasmania Fire Service officer Scott Vinen says the blaze was quickly put out, leaving an obvious burnt patch.

China "fully prepared" for currency war: banker

A top Chinese banker said Beijing is "fully prepared" for a currency war as he urged the world to abide by a consensus reached by the G20 to avert confrontation, state media reported on Saturday.

Yi Gang, deputy governor of China's central bank, issued the call after G20 finance ministers last month moved to calm fears of a looming war on the currency markets at a meeting in Moscow.

Those fears have largely been fuelled by the recent steep decline in the Japanese yen, which critics have accused Tokyo of manipulating to give its manufacturers a competitive edge in key export markets over Asian rivals.

Yi said a currency war could be avoided if major countries observed the G20 consensus that monetary policy should primarily serve as a tool for domestic economy, the Xinhua report said.

But China "is fully prepared", he added.

Seized Chinese Weapons Raise Concerns on Iran

An Iranian dhow seized off the Yemeni coast was carrying sophisticated Chinese antiaircraft missiles, a development that could signal an escalation of Iran’s support to its Middle Eastern proxies, alarming other countries in the region and renewing a diplomatic challenge to the United States.

Among the items aboard the dhow, according to a review of factory markings on weapons and their packing crates, were 10 Chinese heat-seeking antiaircraft missiles, most of them manufactured in 2005.

The missiles were labeled QW-1M and bore stencils suggesting that they had been assembled at a factory represented by the state-owned China National Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation, sanctioned by the United States for transfers of missile technology to Pakistan and Iran.

More than 70 workers evacuated after oil leak on North Sea rig

More than seventy oil workers have been evacuated from a rig in the North Sea after a leak.

The North Sea platform Cormorant Alpha was partially evacuated on Saturday morning after a leak was found in one of the legs — the second incident this year.

The rig has been shut down as a precaution while TAQA, who own and operate the platform, investigate the cause of the leak.

A spokesman for TAQA Bratani said: "TAQA Bratani can confirm that a hydrocarbon release detected in one of the Cormorant Alpha platform legs has now been contained, with no further hydrocarbon release.

U.S. cities in front line as sea levels rise

The signs of rising water are everywhere in this seaport city: yellow "Streets May Flood" notices are common at highway underpasses, in low-lying neighborhoods and along the sprawling waterfront.

Built at sea level on reclaimed wetland, Norfolk has faced floods throughout its 400-year history. But as the Atlantic Ocean warms and expands, and parts of the city subside, higher tides and fiercer storms seem to hit harder than they used to.

Bloomberg: Don't Panic, USA Has 'Infinite Amount of Money'............. In China

At midnight tonight, a bevy of steep spending cuts will hit the federal government unless Congress and the White House agree to an alternative deficit-cutting proposal. Although the national media has been relentlessly focused on this deadline, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it will only affect New York City if the so-called “sequestration” continues for a significant length of time.

“It depends on how long,” Mr. Bloomberg said on his weekly WOR radio show with John Gambling. “If it lasts a few weeks, no. If it does, yeah. We get 10 or 12 percent of our budget from the federal government, not all of that is going to be cut back, but there would be effects–not good effects. But in the context of, ‘Is anything going to change tomorrow? Are we going to run out of money tomorrow?’ I’m sure I’ll get that question at the [next] press conference. No.”

Furthermore, while saying the federal deficit does indeed need to be curtailed, Mr. Bloomberg argued the United States could owe “an infinite amount of money” and there is no specific amount that would cause the country to default.

Democracy in peril: This was the week Britons finally despaired of their leaders. It may be remembered as a disastrous turning point in our history

This week saw Britain’s first ‘Grillo moment’. Just as on Sunday a quarter of Italians responded to their country’s dire political and economic crisis by voting for comedian Beppe Grillo, so on Thursday, the Liberal Democrat candidate was elected to parliament in the Eastleigh by‑election.

Worse still for David Cameron, his own party was pushed into third place by Ukip, a protest movement that blames the European Union for almost everything from global warming to the failure of Mid-Staffordshire NHS Trust.

Of course the result — which also offered no comfort to fourth-placed Labour — represented a gesture of disgust towards mainstream politicians which lots of people far from suburban Hampshire will welcome.

Japanese Blogger’s Troubling Insight into the Psyche of Post-Disaster Fukushima Residents

In just 10 days’ time, two years will have passed since the magnitude-9.03 earthquake off the coast of Northeastern Japan shook the country to its core. The resulting tsunami killed thousands of people living in coastal areas and knocked out power to cooling systems at the now infamous Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which ultimately led to the incident that has been cited by many as the worse nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. People living nearby were ordered to evacuate, and thousands more from surrounding areas fled for fear of being exposed to radiation. Many have never returned.

Despite some areas of Fukushima remaining unsafe to enter, with a population of nearly 2 million, life goes on in the troubled prefecture. Kids go to school; parents go to work; people are doing their best to get back to normal.

According to one former Fukushima resident, however, there is something very much amiss in the prefecture. An uncomfortable air of forced self-assurance pervades many towns, and the general message of “all is well” is repeated ad nauseam, with those who go against the grain met with disdain and reproach.

Premature Fed pullback could "short-circuit" recovery: Bernanke

Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, said on Friday that pulling back on aggressive policy measures too soon would pose a real risk of damaging a still-fragile recovery.

There has been some disagreement within the Fed of whether the U.S. central bank's bond-buying program, which is designed to push down long-term interest rates, should be phased out.

Fed Board Governor Jeremy Stein argued recently there were signs of overheating in certain financial markets and that the central bank should consider using monetary policy to address such risks if they persist.

Is Mars about to get hit? Warning over approaching comet that could cause one BILLION megaton blast

A comet hurtling into our solar system from deep space could next year score a direct and cataclysmic impact on Mars, astronomers say.

According to current calculations, comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) is set for a near miss that will bring it within 23,000 miles of the surface of the Red Planet.

But the unpredictable nature of comet orbits, which can change as jet-like geysers of steam erupt from their surfaces as they near the Sun, means it could pass further away, or veer into a direct collision course.

'They leave rubbish mountains taller than I am': Left-wing German mayor's rant at Bulgarian and Romanian immigrants who he says have sent town's crime soaring

The mayor of a German city claims Romanian and Bulgarian migrants are causing havoc, committing crimes and costing his authority close to £15million a year to house, feed and police.

Soeren Link, the left-wing mayor of the former industrial city of Duisburg, close to the border with Holland, claims prostitution and robberies have spiked since the EU's latest members began arriving last year.

'We are massively affected,' said the mayor, confirming the fears of the Association of German Cities which recently warned of 'social unrest' because of the economic refugees.

Iraq war was unjustifiable says Lord Prescott (who helped to start it)

Ten years on, Lord Prescott has finally admitted that the disastrous war in Iraq was ‘unjustified’.

The Labour politician, who was Deputy Prime Minister at the time, said he had supported the intervention because he was assured that George Bush had a plan to bring peace to the Middle East.

But the US president apparently lost interest in solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and now Lord Prescott says he thought the war was wrong.

Did UKIP leader Nigel Farage blow his chance to become an MP by refusing to run in Eastleigh by-election?

Nigel Farage was forced to face down claims yesterday that his refusal to run in the Eastleigh by-election cost his party its first Westminster seat.

UKIP candidate Diane James stormed from behind on a wave of protest votes to take second place in the poll. She won 27.8 per cent of the vote to finish just 1,771 votes behind Liberal Democrat victor Mike Thornton.

But her leader, who said his party was on the verge of causing a ‘national political earthquake’, faced the charge that his decision not to run had killed any chance of UKIP winning the seat.

Assad forces take Aleppo village, reopening supply line

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces seized a village southeast of the city of Aleppo on Friday, reopening a supply line to the country's biggest city where they have been battling rebels for eight months, a monitoring group said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the capture of Tel Shghaib marked the last step to creating a land supply route north into Aleppo from Hama province, crucial for Assad's forces who have lost control of part of the main north-south highway.

Michigan governor clears way for state takeover of Detroit

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder cleared the way for a state takeover of Detroit, declaring that the birthplace of the U.S. automotive industry faces a fiscal emergency and that he has identified a top candidate to assume its management.

Friday's declaration by the Republican governor virtually assures that the state of Michigan will assume control of Detroit's books, and eventually decide whether the city should file the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.

M5S says it will not help form Italian government

The joint founder of the Five Star Movement (M5S), which holds the balance of power in Italy after its astonishing performance in this week's elections, has said it will not play any role in the formation of the country's next government.

But in his first interview since the results became known, Gianroberto Casaleggio, the digital mastermind behind the M5S's vertiginous ascent, signalled that the movement could provide limited support for a minority government, such as that proposed on Friday by the centre-left leader, Pier Luigi Bersani.

Italy and the eurozone plunged into crisis this week after no one party or alliance emerged from the election with the necessary outright majority in both houses of parliament.

Outrage as Lloyds loses £570m and then hands £1.5m bonus to boss António Horta-Osório

State-backed Lloyds Banking Group was under heavy fire last night after handing its chief executive a £1.5m bonus despite losing £570m in 2012.

Antonio Horta-Osorio's award was part of a £375m bonus pay-out by the loss-making bank, and produced a fresh torrent of criticism as the Government mulls selling part of its 39 per cent stake at a loss.

Mystery fumes cause panic in Kingston

THE island's environmental management agency was last night still trying to determine the source of noxious fumes that resulted in more than 50 persons, some of whom collapsed, being rushed to hospital in Kingston.

The mystery fumes also caused discomfort to many more persons in the vicinity of the Central Sorting Office (CSO) on South Camp Road, plunging the area into chaos for a few hours.

Several businesses in the area were forced to close, classes were suspended at nearby schools, and persons were evacuated from the CSO building as the police restricted traffic movement from East Queen Street to South Camp Road in an effort to protect people from potential harm.

At the same time, firefighters, medical personnel and National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) officials tried to find the source of the fumes.

Road collapse closes Highway 89 south of Page

Page is cut off from points directly south by a deep, 150-foot-long crack in Highway 89 that occurred this morning about 25 miles south of Page, and it’s unknown when the road might be repaired.

The road appears to have split in a few places, and is divided by a fissure greater than 5 feet deep in one area.

Three accidents resulted from drivers hitting the large divide, with the most serious involving a person whose airbag deployed. She was transported to Page with minor injuries, according to state law enforcement officials.

Russian Adoptee's Texas Death 'Accidental'

The death of a three-year-old boy adopted from Russia at his Texas home was an accident, a coroner has ruled.

The findings contradict claims by Russian officials that Max Shatto (born Maxim Kuzmin) was tortured and killed by his adoptive mother.

The case ignited a diplomatic firestorm just weeks after Russia passed a law banning US adoptions.

But four doctors who reviewed Max's autopsy results cleared his adoptive parents of wrongdoing, Texas officials said in a statement.

The autopsy found Max died from a lacerated artery in his bowel due to blunt force trauma in his abdomen.

Obama Signs Order To Start Spending Cuts

President Barack Obama has signed an order authorising $85bn cuts in domestic and defence spending following the failure of efforts to strike a deal with Republicans on cutting the US deficit.

Mr Obama and Republican leaders in the House and Senate declared themselves still deadlocked after a last-minute White House meeting last night.

The two sides are at odds over the president's insistence on increasing tax revenue as part of any plan to tackle the country's $16.6trn debt.

Florida Sinkhole: Crater 'Seriously Unstable'...Could Grow Bigger

A sinkhole that swallowed a man in Florida when it opened up in his bedroom is "seriously unstable" and likely to grow, officials have warned.

No one is being allowed inside the home where Jeff Bush is thought to have died, because authorities fear more lives could be lost.

Hillsborough County administrator Mike Merrill described the hole as "seriously unstable" after engineers said the soil around the house was very soft and could suffer another collapse.

He said: "This is no ordinary sinkhole. This is a chasm."
