Four months later after Hurricane Sandy, Jersey Shore still a wasteland

It has been nearly four months since the storm commonly known as Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey’s shoreline. And even though Sandy was not, in fact, a hurricane by the time it ripped into the Jersey Shore, the damage it caused was widespread and severe.

Some beaches and roads remain closed, and many residents will never recover their losses. I took a ride through some of the hardest hit areas last weekend with Walter LaCicero, the Mayor of Lavallette, who said time and time again, “There used to be a house there.” Here, some photos from our trip.

New Planet Kepler-37b: Smallest Yet Outside Solar System

A new planet has been discovered orbiting a distant star - the smallest yet detected outside our own Solar System.

The mini-world, the size of the Moon, is described as hot and barren and thought to be like a small version of Mercury.

The planet's close orbit to its star - Kepler-37 - means it would be too hostile to support life but scientists say its discovery is significant as it shows that it should be possible to spot Earth-type planets, if there are any out there.

They have called the new world Kepler-37b, after the star.

Sheriff Warns Of “Second American Revolution” If Gun Grabbers Get Their Way

A Milwaukee County Sheriff has warned that a second American Revolution may be sparked if unconstitutional gun laws are enforced by police and sheriff’s department officials.

Sheriff David Clarke recently urged the citizens he serves to consider learning firearm safety because of “a duty to protect yourself and your family.”

In a message posted on the Sheriff’s website, Clarke wrote “I need you in the game, but are you ready? With officers laid-off and furloughed, simply calling 9-1-1 and waiting is no longer your best option. You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back; but are you prepared?”

France's Goodyear Workers 'Too Lazy To Save'

An American tycoon has ruled out the rescue of the Goodyear tyre factory in France because he thinks its workers are "too lazy" to make the business viable.

French minister Arnaud Montebourg had hoped Maurice M Taylor Jr, the president of the American Titan group, would step in to keep the plant in the north of the country going.

But in a letter sent earlier this month to Mr Montebourg, the American said a very emphatic "non".

Elisa Lam found in hotel rooftop water tank: LAPD

Police say the body of a woman found wedged in a water tank on the roof of a downtown hotel is that of a missing Canadian guest.

Investigators used body markings to identify 21-year-old Elisa Lam, police spokeswoman Officer Diana Figueroa said late Tuesday. A maintenance worker at the Cecil Hotel found the body earlier in the day after guests complained of low water pressure.

Lam, of Vancouver, British Columbia, traveled to California alone on Jan. 27 and was last seen by workers at the Cecil on Jan. 31.

Cameroon says kidnapped French hostages now in Nigeria

The Islamist militants believed to have abducted a French family of seven, including four children, in Cameroon on Tuesday have taken them into Nigeria, Cameroon's foreign ministry said.

The abduction highlights the growing risk of attacks on French nationals and interests in Africa since Paris sent forces into Mali last month to help oust Islamist rebels occupying the country's north.

"The kidnappers have crossed the Nigerian border with their hostages," junior minister Joseph Dion Ngute said in a statement late on Tuesday.

China Says Army Is Not Behind Attacks in Report

A day after an American security firm accused a Chinese People’s Liberation Army unit in Shanghai of engaging in cyber warfare against American corporations, organizations and government agencies, China’s defense ministry issued a strong denial and insisted that the report was flawed.

At a press conference in Beijing Wednesday, the ministry suggested the allegations were destructive and challenged a study by Mandiant, an American computer security firm that identified P.L.A. Unit 61398 in Shanghai as one of the most aggressive computer hacking operations in the world.

Geng Yansheng, a spokesman for China’s Ministry of National Defense, said that China had been the victim of cyber attacks that have originated in the U.S., and that Mandiant mischaracterized China’s activities.

Pistorius 'Fired Downwards Through Door' contradicting the athlete's claims

Prosecutors have directly challenged two of Oscar Pistorius' key claims about the night he shot and killed his girlfriend.

Investigating officer Hilton Botha says a witness saw lights on after the shooting - despite the Paralympic star earlier claiming he was too frightened to switch on the light fearing intruders were inside his home.

A statement on behalf of the 26-year-old athlete - read out in court on Tuesday - also said he was not wearing his prosthetic legs at the time and felt vulnerable.

But Mr Botha said that the trajectory of the shots was downward, suggesting that he was firing from a standing position.

Pound Plunges As King Loses QE Vote

The pound has plunged against key economies after it was revealed that the Bank of England boss voted for an increase in monetary stimulus.

Sterling fell to fresh multi-month lows against the euro and the dollar after minutes from the BoE showed governor Sir Mervyn King wanted an increase of quantitative easing (QE) to £400bn.

The notes unexpectedly showed three out of the nine BoE policymakers voted for an increase in asset purchases under the bank's QE programme, which currently sits at £375bn.

Bahrain says Iran's Revolutionary Guard behind "terror" cell

Bahrain has accused Iran's Revolutionary Guard of setting up a militant cell to assassinate public figures in the Gulf Arab kingdom and attack its airport and government buildings.

Bahraini authorities said on Sunday they had arrested eight Bahrainis in the group, with links to Iran, Iraq and Lebanon.

The kingdom, base for the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, has been in political turmoil since protests erupted there in 2011, led by majority Shi'ite Muslims demanding an end to the Sunni monarchy's political domination and full powers for parliament.

Bahrain has accused Shi'ite Iran of fuelling the unrest, an accusation Tehran has consistently denied.

Anti-austerity strike brings Greece to a standstill

Greek workers held a nationwide strike against wage cuts and high taxes on Wednesday, keeping ferries stuck in ports, schools shut and hospitals with only emergency staff.

The two biggest labor unions brought much of crisis-hit Greece to a standstill during the 24-hour protest against austerity policies which they say deepen the hardship of people struggling through the country's worst peacetime downturn.

Rome will burn, regardless of Italian election result

Regardless of who wins next weekend's parliamentary election, Italy's long economic decline is likely to continue because the next government won't be strong enough to pursue the tough reforms needed to make its economy competitive again.

Bankers, diplomats and industrialists in Rome and Milan despair at how Italians are shifting allegiances ahead of the February 24-25 vote to favor anti-establishment upstarts and show disgust with the established parties.

That makes it more likely that no bloc will have the political strength to tackle Italy's deep-rooted economic crisis, which has made it Europe's most sluggish large economy for the past two decades.

Russia Calls for End to Syrian Crisis

Russia is calling for an end to the nearly two-year crisis in Syria.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday after a meeting with Arab diplomats in Moscow that neither the Syrian government nor rebels can pursue a military solution, saying that is a path to mutual destruction.

Russia has used it veto power in the United Nations Security Council to block three rounds of resolutions against Syria, stressing the need for Syria to find an end to the fighting without foreign interference.

Monti's Market Votes Worthless as Berlusconi Gains

Bondholders would deliver a landslide victory for Mario Monti at this weekend’s election, based on the drop in yields during his premiership. Unfortunately for them, Italy’s voters are less keen.

While Monti’s austerity program has rewarded investors with a 28 percent gain in the nation’s debt since he became prime minister, it is less popular with the electorate. His coalition was in fourth place in the final polls before voting scheduled to end Feb. 25, trailing Pier Luigi Bersani, former premier Silvio Berlusconi and comedian-turned-politician Beppe Grillo.

“The dream outcome would be a Monti-led government,” said Kasper Ullegaard, head of fixed-income at Sampension AS, which oversees about $36 billion in assets, including Italian bonds, from Copenhagen. “We would like a continuation of the current administration which will continue its reforms. That may be a low possibility event, but even a coalition with more Bersani and less Monti is better than the alternative.”

Greece's weakened workforce starts to crack

Looking out across a room full of reporters gathered to welcome French President Francois Hollande on Tuesday, Greece's President Karolos Papoulias gave a stark warning about the state of the country after three harsh years of government spending cuts, joblessness and tax hikes.

"We are faced with a societal explosion if any more pressure is put on society," he said.

Not only are Greece's 1.35 million unemployed unable to make ends meet, but a growing number of those still employed are struggling to feed, heat and clothe themselves — and pay the increasingly hefty taxes the government is relying on to turn the economy around.

Greece's largest union, the GSEE, has called a general strike Wednesday to protest a new series of austerity measures. It warns that the labor force — which includes a large public sector — has been too badly weakened to help the battered country recover.

Government invests another £37million of Tax Payers Money in electric cars... despite only 2,000 being sold last year

The electric car industry was handed a £37million boost by the taxpayer yesterday – even though only 2,300 were sold last year.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin announced a subsidy for homes and businesses which fit plug-in points for the cars.

It will pay up to three-quarters of the installation costs, which range from £1,000 to £10,000.
Hospitals, police and public bodies may have the full price paid.

Probably scratching your heads as to why our government would invest Millions more in a product which is failing so badly in the car industry, and not just in the UK either, the electric car is failing globally.

Feb 4th 2013: Electric cars head toward another dead end - Recent moves by Japan's two largest automakers suggest that the electric car, after more than 100 years of development and several brief revivals, still is not ready for prime time - and may never be.

Of course, what they won't tell you is, that BRUSSELS has demanded and has given a deadline for Member countries to install these plug in points.

In addition it has to be one type of Brussels Approved plug all over Europe, German manufactured Type Two plug.

The Brussels executive wants to impose rigid guidelines and a minimum number of charging points for electrical vehicles to spur market demand as part of its legislative proposal on alternative fuels.

Member states will have 2020 as a deadline to meet the new targets with just under 10 million electrical vehicles expected around the same time.

124 MILE ASTEROID IMPACT ZONE FOUND IN AUSTRALIA FROM 300 MILLION YEARS AGO

Scientists have discovered a massive 200-kilometre (124-mile) impact zone in the Australian outback they believe was caused by an asteroid which smashed into Earth more than 300 million years ago.

Andrew Glikson, a visiting fellow at the Australian National University, said the asteroid measuring 10 to 20 kilometres in diameter was a giant compared to the plunging meteor which exploded above Russia a week ago.

That event set off a shockwave that shattered windows and hurt almost 1,000 people in the Urals city of Chelyabinsk, but Glikson said the consequences of the Australian event would have been global.

"This is a new discovery," Glikson told AFP on Wednesday of the impact zone in South Australia's East Warburton Basin.

Bulgarian Government Resigns Amid Protests....In Another fine example of EU political Stability

The Bulgarian premier and his whole government is resigning from office after nationwide protests against austerity.

Prime Minister Boiko Borisov had tried to calm protests against high electricity prices by sacking his finance minister, pledging to cut power prices and punish foreign-owned companies but the measures failed to defuse discontent.

Twenty-five people were taken to hospital after protesters clashed with police in the capital Sofia late on Tuesday while tens of thousands hit the streets over the weekend.

Millions of dogs, cats coddled, 200,000 gassed each year in pet-mad Japan

Cast in bronze, Hachiko sits in a position of prominence befitting a storied daimyo or prime minister, right next to the busiest intersection in Japan, if not the world.

As the oft-told story goes, the famed golden-brown Akita would greet his master, professor Hidesaburo Ueno of Tokyo University, outside Shibuya Station at the end of every day as he returned from work.

After the professor died suddenly in 1925 of a stroke, Hachiko continued to wait patiently outside the station for his master day in, day out for another nine long years, until his own demise.

Digital capitalism produces few winners (much like the rest of capitalism, which is destined to collapse)

Need a crash course in digital capitalism? Easy: you just need to understand four concepts — margins, volume, inequality and employment. And if you need more detail, just add the following adjectives: thin, vast, huge and poor.

First, margins. Once upon a time, there was a great company called Kodak. It dominated its industry, which happened to be chemistry-based photography. And in its dominance, it enjoyed very fat profit margins — up to 70 percent in some cases. But somewhere in the depths of Kodak’s R&D labs, a few researchers invented digital photography. When they put it to their bosses, the conversation went something like this. Boss: “What are the margins likely to be on this stuff?” Engineers: “Well, it’s digital technology so maybe 5 percent at best.” Boss: “Thank you and goodbye.”

Actually, it turned out to be goodbye Kodak: Those fat margins on an obsolete technology blindsided the company’s leaders. Kodak’s engineers were right, of course. Anything that involves computers and mass production is destined to be commoditized. My first mobile phone (purchased in the 1980s) cost nearly £1,000 (¥145,000). I’ve just seen a handset for sale in Tesco for £9.95 (¥1,440). (And, yes, I know that Apple currently earns fat margins on its hardware, but that’s because it’s usually ahead of the competition and it won’t last. What’s happening in the much bigger Android market is a better guide.) And, if anything, the trend towards thin margins in non-hardware businesses is even more pronounced because online markets are relatively frictionless. Just ask anyone who’s trying to compete with Amazon.

Miami: Police Search West Kendall For 3 Likely Armed Men, Residents Warned to Stay Indoors

Police were searching a neighborhood with K-9 units in West Kendall for three men – who are likely armed – after shots were fired at police and then a home was set ablaze on Tuesday during a narcotics investigation, authorities said.

Police set up a perimeter from Miller Drive to 64th Avenue and from SW 142nd Avenue to SW 157th Avenue. They were warning all residents to stay in doors because the men were considered to be likely armed and dangerous.

An Ohio woman is one of 19 people in a single southwestern county who may have heeded the seedy advice to ‘vote early and vote often.’

Melowese Richardson, who lives in Cincinnati, told a local television station that she voted twice because she ‘certainly wanted my vote to count.’

The grandmother is one of 19 people being investigated by Hamilton County over voter fraud in the recent 2012 election.

Ali Syed, pictured left, of Ladera Ranch, California, has been identified as the ruthless killer who gunned down three people during a chaotic murder and carjacking spree that began at his parents home, pictured right early this morning. His 25-minute reign of terror through Orange County left a bloody trail of dead and injured victims in a series of carjackings and gunfire, police have said. Authorities reported at least five locations where victims were shot by Syed - who later turned his shotgun on himself. Melvin Edwards, 69, (right) was one of those shot dead in what several witnesses described as an 'execution'.

At least five people including two children have been buried under a landslide which swept over a village near a coal mine in southern China.

Warning... if the taxman gets your bill wrong it's now officially YOUR fault: Don't be landed with a shock bill that you can't appeal against

Workers and pensioners are being warned to double-check their tax codes or face being landed with shock bills that they cannot appeal.

More than 20 million codes, which tell you how much of your income will be tax-free, are sent to 16 million people at this time of year.

But already Money Mail has seen several cases where the code — a combination of letters and numbers — is wrong.

Children's sweets, stock cubes and steaks are the latest foods to be tested for traces of horse

Children's sweets were last night at the centre of new fears over the horsemeat scandal.

It emerged that gelatine, which originates from the skin and bones of animals and is found in sweets as well as jelly, trifles and some yoghurts, will be tested for traces of horse.

The tests will be expanded to 514 products in total, including stock cubes and steak, the Food Standards Agency said yesterday.

North Korea threatens South with "final destruction"

North Korea threatened South Korea with "final destruction" during a debate at the United Nations Conference on Disarmament on Tuesday, saying it could take further steps after a nuclear test last week.

"As the saying goes, a new-born puppy knows no fear of a tiger. South Korea's erratic behavior would only herald its final destruction," North Korean diplomat Jon Yong Ryong told the meeting.

US Government won't fall apart on day of reckoning....There is always still Golf with Tiger

Just as computers worldwide did not crash on January 1, 2000, in the "Y2K" scare and Earth itself did not shatter on December 21, 2012, as some interpreters of the Mayan calendar predicted, March 1, 2013, will not be remembered as the day the U.S. government disintegrated.

The Obama administration and even some Republicans are warning of mass government layoffs and services collapsing when "sequestration" begins in 10 days, unless a gridlocked U.S. Congress finds a way to circumvent the start of the $85 billion in federal budget cuts.

But what actually happens on March 1?

"Nothing. Nothing happens," said a senior congressional aide who is keeping a close eye on the looming budget cuts.
