Brussels fights US data privacy push ....Why are people not worried about Brussel's Global push for Control

Europe’s most senior justice official is adamant she will fight US attempts to water down a proposed EU data protection and privacy law that would force global technology companies to obey European standards across the world.

Viviane Reding, EU commissioner for justice, said that the EU was determined to respond decisively to any attempts by US lobbyists – many working for large tech groups such as Google and Facebook – to curb the EU data protection law.

“Exempting non-EU companies from our data protection regulation is not on the table. It would mean applying double standards,” Ms Reding told the Financial Times.

Christopher Dorner: Police break out the drones and warn everyone, including hardened marines, to stay indoors -- why?

They believe burly, heavily-armed Christopher Dorner is holed-up in the wilderness of California’s snow-capped San Bernardino mountains 80 miles east of Los Angeles.

The burnt-out shell of his pick-up truck was discovered in the nearby resort of Big Bear, where residents and tourists have been warned to stay indoors as the search continues.

Yesterday, as a task force of 125 officers, some riding Snowcats in the rugged terrain, continued their search, it was revealed that Dorner has become the first human target for remotely-controlled airborne drones on US soil.

A senior police source said: “The thermal imaging cameras the drones use may be our only hope of finding him. On the ground, it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack.”

Asked directly if drones have already been deployed, Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz, who is jointly leading the task force, said: “We are using all the tools at our disposal.”

The use of drones was later confirmed by Customs and Border Patrol spokesman Ralph DeSio, who revealed agents have been prepared for Dorner to make a dash for the Mexican border since his rampage began.

He said: “This agency has been at the forefront of domestic use of drones by law enforcement. That’s all I can say at the moment.”

Matt's thoughts:
This is not an attempt by the Federal Government to get Americans used to drones in active police duty. There will never be an argument that arming these drones can take out "criminals" faster than police on the ground. Please ignore the fact that this news piece places his "manifesto" at just 6,000 words when it's actually 11,000 words long. When they say, "We are all Christopher Dorner", they are in at least one way right, or at least we will be in the near future.

François Hollande's flawed vision for Europe

LEADERS keep talking about the future of Europe, yet none seems able to offer a clear vision. Angela Merkel speaks vaguely of the need for greater “Europeanisation of national powers”. David Cameron, by contrast, wants a renationalisation of European powers—though without being too specific. This week it was François Hollande’s turn to speak about destiny. His concept, as set out in a speech to the European Parliament on February 5th, is to extend French dirigiste and socialist ideas to Europe, even where they cannot be applied to France itself.

Take the rising value of the euro. France cannot resort to devaluation to close its already large trade deficit. So Mr Hollande wants euro-zone governments to act together to bring down the exchange rate. Or take competitiveness. Mr Hollande has adopted some cautious labour-market reforms, but now he proposes a euro-zone minimum wage. Or take taxation. Having put up French taxes, he wants euro-zone countries to “harmonise” tax policies. Or take macroeconomic policy. If deficit countries must undergo austerity, then the EU as a whole should continue spending to support growth, and surplus countries should boost domestic demand to bring up the rest.

Britain will have to fend off European Commission threat to change business re-structuring

Britain will have to fend off European Commission attempts to take control of a flexible and popular system of company restructuring.

These 'schemes of arrangement' cut out the need for an insolvency practitioner and can be used by troubled companies and solvent firms wishing to restructure.

The EC proposes to update Europe's 2000 insolvency regulation, designed to allow simpler decision-making in crossborder insolvencies as to which country has jurisdiction.

DNA Riddle As Twins Held In Rapes Case

French police investigating a series of rapes are perplexed after DNA evidence matched a set of twins - but they cannot tell which brother may be to blame.

With telling the difference between the twins' DNA extremely difficult and expensive, police in the southern city of Marseille have in the meantime charged both men, identified only as Elwin and Yohan, and are holding them without bail.

"It's a rather rare case for the alleged perpetrators to be identical twins," chief investigator Emmanuel Kiehl said.

The two men, both 24-year-old unemployed delivery drivers, deny any involvement in the rapes of six women between between September and January.

More Schoolkids Diagnosed with Mental Health Problems: Korea (and likely elsewhere)

Of 6.48 million schoolkids in Korea, 1.05 million or 16.3 percent need special attention for signs of depression or a violent disposition, a survey suggests. Some 220,000 students or 4.5 percent are considered at risk and require a mental evaluation and treatment.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology conducted two behavioral and mental health checkups on elementary, middle and high school students last year.

The problem is that the numbers are increasing. The proportion of children needing special attention rose from 12.8 percent in 2010 to 16.3 percent last year, and the proportion of at-risk kids from 2.6 percent to 4.5 percent.

Middle-schoolers took up the highest proportion in the at-risk group with 7.1 percent, followed by high school students (5.4 percent) and elementary schoolchildren (2.4 percent).

The main reason for the increase, however, is that the proportion of schoolchildren who participated in the tests reached 97 percent for the first time last year, compared to around 70 percent in previous years.

Nigeria: Three Foreign Doctors Killed At Home

Three North Korean doctors have been killed, one of them beheaded, in northeastern Nigeria.

A gang armed with machetes is believed to have carried out the attack on the men at their flat in Potiskum, a town in Yobe state.

Sunday's attack comes just days after gunmen on motorbikes shot dead nine women administering polio vaccinations in Kano, a major northern city.

UK: FOUR MILLION adults have never worked in their lives!!!

Nearly four million British adults have never had any form of paid work in their lives - more people than the population of Wales.

Figures show the scale of the problem facing British welfare system, which has been criticised for allowing jobless people to be better off than those in work.

More than a quarter of those who have never earned a living are aged between 25 to 64, and 205,000 over 65s had never worked before becoming pensioners.

US 'jumped to conclusion on nuke test'

A North Korean state media outlet has accused the United States of “jumping to conclusions” that the North would soon stage a nuclear test, adding to the confusion over its immediate intentions.

The US and its ally South Korea are “fussing over speculation” without knowing exactly what action the North plans to take, Tongil Sinbo, a Japan-based pro-North weekly magazine funded by Pyongyang, said in an editorial.

“The US and enemies, based on their own hypothesis and arguments, jumped to the conclusion that we would stage a third nuclear test,” said the editorial dated Friday and posted on the North's official website, Uriminzokkiri.

“They are fussing over speculation without having a clue about what important state measures will be taken, including whether it will be a nuclear test or something worse than that,” it said.

Five dead as lifeboat plunges into sea off British cruise ship in Canary Islands

Officials said first responders were called to the ship, the Thomson Majesty, at 1205 GMT on Sunday after "a lifeboat with occupants had fallen overboard from a cruise ship docked at the pier of Santa Cruz port in La Palma".

The incident reportedly took place during a safety drill, when one of the winches lowering the lifeboat to the water is believed to have broken. The boat plummeted more than 60 feet to the water.

The nationality and sex of those who died was not known, a government statement said. Spanish media reported that three of the victims were from Indonesia, one was from the Phillippines, and one was from Greece. All were believed to be crew.

Muslim Brotherhood want aide as top Egypt cleric

Egypt's ruling Muslim Brotherhood has nominated one of its senior leaders for the influential position of grand mufti, the nation's top cleric, defying critics who accuse the Islamist group of seeking to dominate all institutions.

Islamic scholars chaired by the head of the ancient seat of learning, Al-Azhar, are due to pick a new mufti on Monday from a shortlist of three candidates and send their choice to President Mohamed Mursi to approve.

Cracks appear in European banking union plan

It was billed as a reform that would tighten policing of Europe's banks and end their ability to suck states into crisis. Now fears are growing that a central element of banking union will be scaled back, undermining the whole scheme.

When it takes the role of watchdog for euro zone banks in March next year, the European Central Bank will be confronted with a financial system that is still limping. In some countries, such as Cyprus and Spain, it is in critical condition.

Setting up a fund and agency that, where needed, would shut weak banks - known as 'resolution' - is central to this ECB-led union because it would remove the onus on countries like Ireland to save failing banks alone, running up bills that overwhelm the state.

Tunisian president's party quits Islamist-led government

Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki's secular party withdrew on Sunday from an Islamist-led government already reeling from last week's assassination of secular opposition leader Chokri Belaid.

Belaid's killing on Wednesday - Tunisia's first such political assassination in decades - has thrown the government and the country into turmoil, widening rifts between the dominant Islamist Ennahda party and its secular-minded foes.

RBS Boss Hester Paid Bonus Despite Fine

The boss of the taxpayer-funded Royal Bank of Scotland will be paid a bonus of £780,000 just weeks after his bank was fined £391m for rate-rigging.

Chief executive Stephen Hester will be given the bonus in shares next month as part of a reward scheme for his performance in 2010.

The payout will undoubtedly anger critics of such schemes across the City, especially given its timing so soon after the Libor scandal rocked RBS.

Neurological condition affecting young women discovered that makes them hysterical, then catatonic

A illness newly discovered by Philadelphia doctors is leaving young women dazed, restrained to hospital beds, and finally catatonic.

Doctors say it's as if your brain is on fire.

'One minute I’d be sobbing, crying hysterically, and the next minute I’d be laughing,' said Susannah Cahalan, of New Jersey, who suffered through the disease.

The ex-Los Angeles police officer who has allegedly gunned down three people and remains on the lam once handed in nearly $8,000 of church money that he found in the middle of the road, it has emerged.

Then-Navy ensign, Christopher Dorner, was hailed a hero in Enid, Oklahoma, after he and a military colleague found the bag of cash back in November 2002 and promptly handed it to police. The pair told a local newspaper at the time that the good deed was 'an integrity thing.'

Steven Seagal teams up with Sheriff Joe Arpaio to train armed volunteer posses to protect schools

The self-proclaimed 'America's Toughest Sheriff' is joining forces this weekend with action movie star Steven Seagal to train volunteer armed posse members to defend Phoenix-area schools against gunmen.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced the controversial plan in the wake of the December Newtown, Conn., school shooting that left 27 people dead, including the gunman and 20 first-graders.

The exercise is planned for Saturday at a closed school site in suburban Fountain Hills outside Phoenix where sheriff's SWAT members will act as shooters and 25 teenagers will play the part of students during mock scenarios involving up to three gunmen.

White-out in Moscow as the Russian capital endures its snowiest winter in a century

The east coast of America awoke to a thick blanket of snow today in the aftermath of a furious winter storm that battered the region from Maine to New York.

Relentless snowfall and hurricane-force winds swept the Northeast overnight, forcing airports to ground flights and leaving drivers stranded as they abandoned their cars on impassable highways.

But these images show how the hardy residents of Russia's capital have been enduring similar conditions for months, with Moscow in the midst of its snowiest winter in a century.

EU super spies to get right to snoop on your emails, website visits, medical data and police records

A European super-spying agency is to be granted draconian powers to access a vast range of our personal information, including medical data, criminal records, emails and website visits.

The controversial move, demanded by Brussels in an EU directive, will sweep aside British privacy laws that protect UK citizens from intrusion into their personal lives.

Last night MPs, academics and privacy-rights groups warned that the new powers represented a great threat to individual security.

Secret Britain: The terrifying implications after MPs revive the corpse of the 'Secret Justice' Bill amid gay marriage debate

While all attention at Westminster was focused on whether to allow gay marriage, this Coalition Government did something furtive – something that is not only much less liberal, but coldly terrifying.

Under the cover of the furore, it quietly disinterred the corpse of its ‘Secret Justice’ Bill. This Bill creates extraordinary new legal powers to keep official dealings hidden from us. It changes all the comforting certainties about the rule of law in Britain.

Most of us have some kind of grasp of what is officially called the Justice and Security Bill.

But it can be hard to imagine what it would actually mean in practice.

The Government wants us to think its scope is limited to rare and arcane disputes, perhaps born of foreign battlefields. Or ones that sound as if they belong in spy novels, involving CIA ‘black ops’ and ‘dark jails’. But if it becomes law, the effects will be felt much closer to home.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage says Prime Minister's deal to cut EU spending in Brussels is 'rotten' as he vows party will fight for first Commons seat in by-election

UKIP leader Nigel Farage described the EU budget reduction negotiated by David Cameron as 'a rotten deal for Britain'.

He made the comments while pledging that his party would be fighting for their first House of Commons seat in the Eastleigh by-election.

Referring to the Prime Minster's deal, negotiated in Brussels earlier this week, he said: 'If you go and knock on 100 doors here in Eastleigh and tell them that they will pay £50 million a day to Europe for the next seven years they will think that's not a good deal.'

"Eurovegas" mega-casino approved amid outcry

A sprawling gambling resort near Spain's capital is due to create thousands of much-needed jobs when it opens in 2017, but opponents question the economic benefits and fear it could encourage crime.

Madrid government officials approved the mega-casino, dubbed "Eurovegas" by Spanish media, on Friday after winning a battle with Spain's second-biggest city Barcelona to draw industry mogul Sheldon Adelson's company Las Vegas Sands.

Adelson's company is the target of a federal criminal investigation and a civil lawsuit by the former chief of China operations of Las Vegas Sands, who alleges improprieties at the global casino enterprise that made Adelson, with about $22 billion, the world's 16th richest man.

Adelson has not been charged by federal investigators and Las Vegas Sands has declined to comment to Reuters about the inquiries.

French intervention 'will cost Mali its independence'

Senegalese novelist and intellectual Boubacar Boris Diop offers an incisive and complex critique of the French intervention in Mali in this interview first published in the Senegalese newspaper Le Pays au Quotidien, and translated into English by Bhakti Shringarpure.

Souleymane Ndiaye: Can the situation in northern Mali be viewed as French neo-colonialism in Africa in action?

Boubacar Boris Diop: Yes and no. With Mali, France is certainly in its comfort zone and, with the exception of Nigeria, the countries involved on the ground are part of its former colonial empire. In the end, though, it should be viewed through the logic of global war. The model is really based on the US invasion of Iraq. In addition, the French interventions in Africa have always happened somewhat casually, almost without thinking, while this is one marked by councils of war at Elysée Palace and has been designed as a big media spectacle. French politicians are watching the polls, and the ministers of defence and foreign affairs have never been this forthcoming.

UN, US condemn attack on Iran dissidents in Iraq

The U.N. secretary-general and the U.S. government condemned a deadly attack on an Iranian dissident camp in the Iraqi capital early on Saturday and urged Iraqi authorities to carry out a full investigation.

"(Ban Ki-moon) strongly condemns the mortar attack today on Camp Liberty, the temporary transit facility near Baghdad for former residents of Camp Ashraf," the secretary-general's press office said in a statement.

At least five people were killed and more than 25 wounded in the rocket attack, police sources said.

US Blizzard: Warnings Of Flash Flooding

A major clear-up is under way after a blizzard battered the northeast US.

People in New England began the job of digging out from as much as a metre of snow, while emergency crews used snowmobiles to reach shivering motorists stranded overnight in New York’s Long Island.

Many now fear heavy flooding when the snow begins to melt, and some residents in Massachusetts are being told to evacuate their homes. In the town of Hull, a mandatory evacuation order for coastal areas was issued.

Mass. nuclear power plant loses power, shuts down during snowstorm; NRC monitoring

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says a power plant in Massachusetts has lost power and shut down during a massive snowstorm.

The NRC says the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth experienced an automatic shutdown at around 9:15 p.m. Friday after losing off-site power. Spokesman Neil Sheehan says the plant has declared an unusual event, which is the lowest level of emergency classification.

Sheehan says that the reactor shut down without any problems and that backup generators are powering plant equipment.

The NRC says there’s no threat to public safety.
