Train collision injures 29 in South Africa

At least 29 people including 27 passengers were injured Thursday in a collision between two trains in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province, the second of the kind in the country in one week.

The accident occurred at 1:45 p.m. local time at the East London railway station, where a train moved onto the wrong track to collide with another occupying that platform, according to Metrorail.

This was a "light collision" in its "own yard," Metrorail's regional manager Richard Walker said.

53 dead in Zambia as bus and truck collide

Fifty-three people were killed in a collision between a passenger bus and a truck near the Zambian capital on Thursday, a government official said.

"I can confirm that 53 people have died in the accident," Harry Kalaba, an official in the vice president's office, told AFP from the crash site 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of Lusaka.

"Some bodies are still trapped under the truck but we called for a crane to lift the truck."

Cameron Sets Out His Stall At EU Budget Summit

David Cameron has said that he is prepared to use his veto to block a deal covering the financing of the European Union if the EU does not cut more off its budget.

The British premier made his position clear to reporters ahead of a summit in Brussels to set the budget for the next seven years - the first since his demands caused the collapse of the bloc's previous meeting in November.

It is Mr Cameron's first summit since pledging a referendum on Britain's membership of the EU.

Francois Hollande snubs David Cameron over early talks on EU budget deal

David Cameron clashed with Francois Hollande over the European Union budget as the French President snubbed the Prime Minister by failing to show up at a crucial meeting.

Despite Britain's decision to provide 350 military personnel to support the French intervention in Mali, Mr Hollande ducked out of talks ahead of an EU summit designed to broker a budget deal. He also called for cuts in the €3.5bn-a-year- rebate on the UK's EU contributions won by Margaret Thatcher.

Pentagon backed recommendation for U.S. to arm Syrian Terrori......rebels

Pentagon leaders told Congress on Thursday that they had supported a recommendation to arm Syrian Terrorists rebels promoted by the State Department and CIA but which was reportedly rebuffed by the White House.

President Barack Obama's government has limited its support to non-lethal aid for the rebels who, despite receiving weapons from countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia, are poorly armed compared to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's army and loyalist militias.

Asteroid 2012 DA14 To Pass Earth In Record Near Miss

A 40m-long chunk of rock hurtling through space will pass closer to the Earth than any other near miss on record.

Scientists at Nasa calculate that Asteroid 2012 DA14 will whistle past Earth on February 15 closer than the orbit of some weather and communications satellites, speeding by at a distance of 17,000 miles (27,400km).

That would be the planet's closest shave with an identified flying object since records began.

Findus Beef Lasagne Meals 100% Horsemeat

Testing of Findus beef lasagne has revealed some of the ready meals were made entirely from horsemeat.

Findus tested 18 of its beef lasagne products which found 11 meals containing 60% to 100% horse meat, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said.

Consumers who have purchased the ready meals - produced by French food supplier Comigel on behalf of Findus - have been warned not to eat them and return them to the shop they were bought from.

Retail giant Tesco and discount chain Aldi have already withdrawn a range of ready meals produced by Comigel over fears they contained contaminated meat.

Frozen lasagnes sold by UK supermarkets contain more horse meat than beef, food officials revealed tonight.

The Food Standards Agency said tests showed that Findus beef frozen lasagnes contained “more than 60 per cent horse meat.”

It says it has ordered tests into whether the horse meat has traces of a banned equine drug, phenylbutazone, or 'bute', which is harmful to humans.

Astrologers warn of stormy 'Year of Snake'

A stock market slide, escalated conflict between Japan and China and more Gangnam-styled success for South Korean singer Psy will shape the incoming Year of the Snake, say Asian soothsayers.

Those who make predictions according to the study of feng shui -- or literally "wind-water" -- are influential in many parts of Asia, where people adjust their lives or renovate houses and offices based on the advice.

As they bid farewell to the Year of the Dragon, the fortune tellers warn that the "black water snake" that emerges to replace it on February 10 -- the first day of the Lunar New Year -- could be a venomous one that brings disaster.

Previous Snake years have been marked by the September 11, 2001 terror strikes that killed nearly 3,000 people, the crushing of the 1989 Tiananmen pro-democracy protests and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

The 1929 stock market plunge that heralded the Great Depression also occurred in a snake year.

Currency Wars Return, 1930s Style...and we all know what happened soon after!

As countries try to weaken their currencies to boost exports, the risk of a currency war similar to events seen in the 1930s has heightened and policymakers are making sure they are on the winning side, according to Morgan Stanley.

The balance of power now rests with Japan, according to the bank, as Japan's policy-makers' more dovish approach looks set to bring the world a step closer to a currency war.

The Bank of Japan doubled its inflation target to 2 percent in January and made an open-ended commitment to continue buying assets from next year.

Homeland to buy 21.6 Million More Rounds of Ammunition...Why have they purchased 1,6 billion Bullets in the past 10 Months?

The Department of Homeland Security is set to purchase a further 21.6 million rounds of ammunition to add to the 1.6 billion bullets it has already obtained over the course of the last 10 months alone, figures which have stoked concerns that the federal agency is preparing for civil unrest.

A solicitation posted yesterday on the Fed Bid website details how the bullets are required for the DHS Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, New Mexico.

The solicitation asks for 10 million pistol cartridge .40 caliber 165 Grain, jacketed Hollow point bullets (100 quantities of 100,000 rounds) and 10 million 9mm 115 grain jacketed hollow point bullets (100 quantities of 100,000 rounds).

The document also lists a requirement for 1.6 million pistol cartridge 9mm ball bullets (40 quantities of 40,000 rounds).
An approximation of how many rounds of ammunition the DHS has now secured over the last 10 months stands at around 1.625 billion. In March 2012, ATK announced that they had agreed to provide the DHS with a maximum of 450 million bullets over four years, a story that prompted questions about why the feds were buying ammunition in such large quantities.

Global stocks, euro slump after ECB's Draghi comments

Major stock markets fell on Thursday and the euro hit a near two-week low against the dollar after the European Central Bank's chief said policymakers will monitor the impact of a rising currency and cited downside risks to the bloc's economy.

On Wall Street, shares came under pressure, with traders citing technical factors and the less-upbeat comments on the economy from ECB President Mario Draghi. U.S. stocks have been on an uptrend so far this year, with the S&P 500 up more than 5 percent.

Christopher Dorner Prime Suspect: A police officer becomes the third victim of a series of suspected retribution shootings linked to a dismissed ex-LAPD cop.

A disgruntled former Los Angeles cop is being hunted over the fatal shooting of a police officer and the separate murder of a newly-engaged couple.

The LAPD says Christopher Dorner is suspected of involvement in an overnight ambush in nearby Riverside that killed one officer and critically wounded another.

An earlier shooting in Corona involved two LAPD officers working a security detail. One officer was grazed.

The Riverside officers shot overnight were not actively looking for Dorner.

North Korea set for test launch of new mobile ICBM with upcoming nuclear test

U.S. intelligence agencies monitoring North Korea for signs of a third underground nuclear test recently reported that the isolated communist state appears set to conduct the first test launch of a new road-mobile ICBM built with Chinese technology.

U.S. officials with access to intelligence reports said the North Koreans are expected to test fire either a new KN-08 road-mobile ICBM—capable of reaching parts of the United States—or a new medium-range advanced missile called the Musudan, also built on hard-to-detect mobile launchers.

New intelligence on the KN-08, which was showcased for the first time last April during a North Korean military parade atop a Chinese-made mobile transporter-launcher, indicates the North Koreans are preparing to launch one or more of the missiles around the time they conduct a future nuclear test.

ECB holds rates, Draghi enters the lion's den

Mario Draghi faces a grilling over the European Central Bank's sensitivity to a sharp rise in the euro and his connection to an Italian banking scandal after a policy meeting on Thursday at which policymakers left interest rates unchanged.

The ECB decided to leave its main interest rate at 0.75 percent. A Reuters poll of economists last week suggested it would not change rates until at least July 2014.

Draghi can also expect to be bombarded with questions about how much he knew about the derivatives scandal at Siena's Monte dei Paschi bank, and what he did about it when he headed Italy's central bank from 2006 to 2011.

Italy's third largest and oldest bank has been at the centre of a financial and political storm as a result of facing losses of about 1 billion euros from a series of derivatives and structured finance trades and a 9-billion-euro acquisition of smaller rival Antonveneta which left it badly weakened.
