Protests erupt in Bangladesh after war-crimes verdict

Outraged by a court verdict they considered too lenient, thousands of people took to the streets across Bangladesh on Wednesday demanding the death penalty for an Islamic party leader convicted of war crimes carried out more than four decades ago.

"We've taken additional measures across the country to heighten security," State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Hoque told reporters.

The demonstrations began Tuesday, when an International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Abdul Quader Mollah, assistant secretary general for the Jamaat-e-Islami party, to life in prison.

UK 'can cope with solar superstorm'

If a solar superstorm struck the Earth, the effects on the UK would be "challenging but not cataclysmic", says a major report.

An expert panel for the Royal Academy of Engineering assessed the readiness of Britain to handle a huge outburst of radiation and particles from the Sun.

It found the nation's infrastructure to be reasonably well prepared.

France wants Mali UN force in place by April

France wants a United Nations peacekeeping force to be in place in Mali by April, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Wednesday.

"Once the security will assured, we can envisage without changing the structures that it can be placed under the framework of UN peacekeeping operations," the French top diplomat said.

"That does not mean that we will leave Mali, but we can reduce the number of our troops and focus particularly on finding terrorists," he was quoted as saying by AFP.

Tunisia Dissolves Govt After Politician Killed

Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali has dissolved the government amid mass protests over the murder of opposition leader Chokri Belaid.

He said he would be forming a non-partisan administration to govern until fresh elections can be held after the failure of negotiations between parties on a cabinet reshuffle.

"I have decided to form a government of competent nationals without political affiliation, which will have a mandate limited to managing the affairs of the country until elections are held," Mr Jebali said in a televised address to the nation.

Solar Superstorm: UK 'Must Brace For Threat'

Britain must do more to prepare for a once-in-a-century “solar superstorm”, according to experts.

The Government is being urged by the Royal Academy of Engineering to set up a UK Space Weather Board to help cope with a massive radiation blast from the Sun.

Such an explosion could trigger black-outs, knock out one in 10 satellites and disrupt aircraft and GPS systems.

Statistically a solar superstorm is likely to occur every 100 to 200 years.

EU Budget: Leaders Try To Thrash Out Deal

David Cameron and other European leaders are preparing to meet in Brussels to try to reach a settlement on the European Union's long-term budget.

They are under pressure after talks last November collapsed when Britain, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands demanded deeper cuts from 2014-2020.

European Council president Herman Van Rompuy is trying to broker a deal between the Commission and European Parliament, who want spending to rise, and restive member states.

Those who are familiar with Len Wiseman’s 2007 film “Live Free or Die Hard” (“Die Hard 4.0”) will recall the actor Bruce Willis taking on a gang of cyber terrorists intent on hacking FBI computers. At one point, the arch-villain Gabriel orders a crew of hackers to start a “fire sale” by taking control of the stock market and transportation grids. The attack is designed to target the nation’s reliance on computer controls, sending the public into a panic and presenting us with an almost credible sci-fi plot. The reality of today’s world shows that cyber-terrorism, if left unchecked, might be used not only by individuals or extremist groups, but by hostile governments on the offensive.

The Korean peninsula is now quickly turning into a place where a singular cyber-attack might spark a full-fledged conflict. Last month, North Korea was accused of actively jamming global positioning system (GPS) signals, targeting South Korea’s two largest airports outside its capital city of Seoul. The jamming signals, which were first detected on April 28 and ended on May 6, were traced to the North Korean border city of Kaesong, just 10 km north of the DMZ. Suspicions fell on imported truck-based jamming systems from Russia, capable of jamming signals within 100 kilometres. Was it really North Korea who stood behind the GPS jamming incidents and, if so, what was the purpose?

Federal Reserve admits it WAS hacked by Anonymous as group 'takes revenge' for suicide of Reddit founder Aaron Swartz

The Federal Reserve has admitted it was hacked by Anonymous as the group 'takes revenge' for suicide of Reddit founder Aaron Swartz.

The admission, which raises questions about cyber security at the Fed, follows a claim that hackers linked to the activist group Anonymous had struck the Fed on Sunday, accessing personal information of more than 4,000 U.S. bank executives, which it published on the Web.

Swartz, 26, killed himself on January 11, just a month before he was set to go on trial in Boston for thirteen felony charges.

Baby camel given to Francoise Hollande for 'liberating' Mali was stolen from farmer whose home was destroyed by French shelling.... Sounds about right!

A baby camel presented to French President Francois Hollande for 'liberating' Mali was stolen and will not be allowed to stay in Paris, it emerged today.

In a plot straight out of a madcap Gallic comedy film, a Malian refugee said he wanted the young dromedary back.

Mr Hollande was hailed a hero on Saturday when he arrived in Timbuktu, the capital of Mali, which until a few days before had been in the hands of Al-Qaeda backed terrorists.

Now it has emerged that the camel, who had not been named, actually belonged to a farmer, whose house was destroyed by French shelling during their attack on Timbuktu.

A furious Malian calling himself Said Toureg has now threatened to file a lawsuit, saying on Twitter: 'Paris will witness unprecedented judicial activities regarding the stolen camel...

Huge tax rises are coming after 2015 election to fill £64billion budget black hole

Taxes will have to rise dramatically after the next election to help fill a £64billion black hole in the nation’s finances, Chancellor George Osborne was warned today.

Britain’s stalling economy has meant the Treasury has had to borrow more than expected, leading to several more years of austerity.

As a result spending on services like the police, defence, transport and justice could be cut by a third by 2017-18, the Institute for Fiscal Studies said.

UK government plans to track ALL web use: MI5 to install 'black box' spy devices to monitor British internet traffic

UK spy agencies want to install 'black box' surveillance devices across the country's communications networks to monitor internet use, it emerged today.

Euro zone may order independent money laundering audit in Cyprus....That's one way to delay any talks of another EU Bailout

Euro zone finance ministers will discuss on Monday a Cypriot proposal to order an independent report on whether the country is fully complying with laws against money laundering, a senior EU official said.

The report would be a response to German and others' concerns that Cyprus, which asked the euro zone for financial help last June, has been a tax haven for rich Russians.

Thousands Protests in Tunisia over opposition leader death

Euro currency war could rekindle tensions

If the euro zone loses the global 'currency war', the price will be paid in growth and jobs and fresh tensions about the future of the bloc.

Whoever wins the 'war' eventually, few doubt the euro area has been routed in the latest monetary battles between countries printing and depressing home currencies in part to retain trade advantage in a growth-sapped world.

Protests erupt in Tunisia after government critic killed

A fierce critic of the Tunisian government's dealings with radical Islamists was shot dead on Wednesday, sending protesters onto the streets two years after their Jasmine Revolution sparked revolt across the Arab world.

The headquarters of the moderate Islamist Ennahda party, which rules in a fractious coalition with secularists, was set ablaze after Chokri Belaid, an outspoken, secular leader, was gunned down outside his home in the capital.
