The Holy Trinity, a warship used to land the first Argentine forces in the Falklands War with Britain in 1982, has mysteriously sunk in an Argentine port

Arturo Puricelli, the defence minister, said the loss of the Holy Trinity was due to "negligence in the best-case scenario, or an attack" aimed at making the government look bad. He did not go into detail.

The destroyer, which was retired from active service in 2004, took on water at the Puerto Belgrano naval base after a six-inch pipe burst, the navy said.

The minister later said, however, that he was surprised that the ship sank quickly while it was moored at the port.

First it started listing, he said. "So the breakdown must have been major, or someone opened a value to sink it," he said.

Puricelli ordered the navy to launch an investigation, and said he harboured doubts because the ship was not that old, dating back just to the 1970s.

White House Releases Photo Of Obama Firing Gun

The White House has released a photograph of Barack Obama firing a gun amid growing anger over his attempts to tighten gun control.

The release of the picture, on the White House Flickr account, is seen as an attempt to silence critics after he told an interviewer that he regularly went skeet shooting at Camp David.

'EU budget talks will be very difficult'

Negotiations to thrash out the European Union's next seven-year budget will be "very difficult", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Saturday, warning that it may take time to reach a deal.

"We can't say yet whether the talks will succeed. I only know that the negotiations will be very difficult," Merkel said in her weekly podcast broadcast on her website.

The comments came as EU leaders are preparing to meet in Brussels on Thursday and Friday for a second attempt at finding a deal on the 27-nation bloc's 2014-2020, trillion-euro budget after failing to clinch an agreement at a summit in November.

Syrian town lives under al Qaeda rules

In a small town in Syria's east, Islamist militants have taken unclothed mannequins they see as sexually enticing out of the shops.

Members of the al-Nusra Front, al Qaeda's Syria affiliate, have also prevented women from wearing trousers, preferring that they adopt the shapeless head-to-toe black veil.

The town of 54,000 on the Euphrates river offers a snapshot of what life could be like if Islamist rebels take control of significant areas of Syria as President Bashar al-Assad loses further ground.

Four killed, including Frenchman, in southern Senegal

Four people, including a Frenchman, were killed in Senegal's southern Casamance region when suspected separatist rebels clashed with government soldiers, a military source said on Saturday.

The shoot-out took place late on Friday after suspected members of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC), which has led a low-level insurgency in the region since the 1980s, robbed a bank in the town of Kafoutine.

Israeli President Shimon Peres on Saturday formally asked incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to form a new governing coalition following the January 22 general election.

Netanyahu will initially have 28 days to form a coalition. His rightist Likud-Beitenu party took a battering at the ballot box and won 31 seats, 11 fewer than it had going into the election, but it nevertheless emerged as the largest party.

No-money-down mortgages are back: Here we go again

It’s 100% financing—the same strategy that pushed many homeowners into foreclosure during the housing bust. Banks say these loans are safer: They’re almost exclusively being offered to clients with sizable assets, and they often require two forms of collateral—the house and a portion of the client’s investment portfolio in lieu of a traditional cash down payment.

In most cases, borrowers end up with one loan and one monthly payment. Depending on the lender and the borrower, roughly 60% to 80% of the loan can be pegged to the home’s value while the remaining 20% to 40% can be secured by investments. On a $2 million primary residence, for instance, the borrower could get a $2 million loan, which would require a pledge of assets in an investment portfolio to cover what could have been, say, a $500,000 down payment. The pledged assets can remain fully invested, earning returns as normal, without disrupting the client’s investment goals.

While these affluent clients may be flush with cash, this strategy allows them to get into a home without tying up funds or making withdrawals from interest-earning accounts. And given the market’s gains combined with low borrowing rates in recent years, some banks say clients are pursuing 100% financing as an arbitrage play—where the return on their investments is bigger than the rate they pay on the loan, which can be as low as 2.5%. Some institutions offer only adjustable rates with these loans, which could become more expensive if rates rise. In most cases, the investment account must be held by the same institution that’s providing the loan.

EU data protection reform could start 'trade war', US official says

Back in 1998, British comedian Eddie Izzard quipped on his Dress to Kill tour that the European Union was "500 million people, 200 languages. No one's got a clue what they're saying to each other. It's the cutting edge of politics in a very extraordinarily boring way." Fifteen years on, it's easy to understand how prescient his words were.

But after spending two days in the Belgian capital, it's clear that digitally-minded officials, activists, lobbyists and members of the European Parliament are focused squarely on what could become a massively important change to the European Union's rules concerning data protection. What's more, they have the attention of US tech firms as well.

As reported over a year ago, justice commissioner Viviane Reding of the European Commission proposed a "comprehensive reform" to existing data protection law, which would regulate how online service companies are allowed to keep information on their customers. Right now, anyone who cares about European tech issues has their eye on this ongoing legislation as it makes its way through various Brussels bodies. The legislation is not expected to take effect until 2016.

North Korea threatens US over response to rocket launches

North Korea is threatening to retaliate for what it calls U.S. double standards over recent rocket launches by Pyongyang and U.S. ally Seoul.

A North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman did not elaborate on what that might entail in his comments Saturday to the official Korean Central News Agency. But Pyongyang has recently threatened to conduct its third nuclear test in response to what it calls U.S. hostility.

Washington says Seoul's rocket launch Wednesday had no military intent while Pyongyang's in December was a test of banned ballistic missile technology.

Egypt's new 'bodyguards' to protect women protesters from sex assault

With bright neon vests and hardhats gleaming at dusk, a dozen Egyptian volunteers fanned out through Cairo's crowded Tahrir Square. Their project: end a surge in sexual assaults on women that activists say has become the darkest stain on the country's opposition street movement.

Patrolling on Friday, the men and women have joined Tahrir Bodyguard - one of several informal groups that have arisen to protect female demonstrators after women were stripped, groped and assaulted in a string of attacks this past year. Over the past week alone, while mass protests filled city squares around the country, over two dozen new sexual attacks have been reported - a wave activists call the worst in years.

The U.S. Army reported Thursday that there were 325 confirmed or potential suicides last year among active and nonactive military personnel.

More than 40 huge sinkholes open up all over Pennsylvania's capital... but the city is too broke to fix them

Officials in Pennsylvania's state capital are dealing with a deep issue they can't afford to fix: 41 massive sinkholes throughout the city running as wide as 50 feet and as deep as a typical grave. The mix of loose sandy soil and century-old leaking water pipes underlying Harrisburg's streets have made the area susceptible to such holes, city officials say. But the city is too broke to replace many of the aging pipes as it deals with ongoing budget woes and the looming threat of bankruptcy.

What lives under a glacier? Signs of life discovered in lake buried HALF A MILE beneath West Antarctic Ice Sheet

The first tantalising signs of life have been detected in waters from a subglacial lake half a mile beneath the snowy wastes of the Antarctic, scientists said.

Water retrieved from sub-glacial Lake Whillans contains tiny cells which glowed green in response to DNA-sensitive dye applied in preliminary tests.

While researchers need to carry out further time-consuming tests to see whether the cells are actually still alive, it offers the possibility that there could be as yet unknown life lurking beneath the ice.

Alabama 'survivalist killer' Jimmy Lee Dykes wants a reporter sent into underground bunker to tell his story in exchange for releasing 5-year-old hostage

The survivalist who allegedly shot a school bus driver before taking a five-year-old boy hostage has said that he will release his hostage if a reporter is sent in to tell his story.

MailOnline has learned that Jimmy Lee Dykes made the extraordinary offer on the first day of what has now turned into a siege situation with the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team on site, emergency services and a host of media focused on the piece of Alabama bluff under which Dykes and the boy, Ethan, are holed up.

A source with the local sheriff's office has revealed that a CID Lieutenant spoke with Dykes for the first four hours of the hostage situation, communicating via a pipe sticking out from the ground – the only surface sign of the bunker’s location.

South Korea and the United States will hold a joint naval exercise next week, a report said Saturday, a move seen as a warning to North Korea ahead of its widely expected nuclear test.

The three-day exercise involving a US nuclear submarine and other warships will begin on Monday in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) off the South Korean port city of Pohang, Yonhap news agency reported.

"It will includes anti-submarine and anti-air trainings and maritime manoeuvrings," a military official was quoted as saying in the report.

Suicide Attack at Market in Northwest Pakistan Kills at Least 21

An explosion in a market in northwestern Pakistan on Friday killed at least 21 people and wounded 33 in what the police described as a suicide bombing.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in Hangu, about 70 miles west of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province. Abu Omar, a Taliban commander in the neighboring tribal region of North Waziristan, said in a telephone interview that the attack was in revenge for the killing on Thursday of a Sunni cleric.

Envoy makes "last appeal" for Syria as officials meet

Senior U.S., Russian and U.N. officials, along with the leader of the Syrian opposition, were all expected at a security conference in Munich on Saturday, providing a rare opportunity for talks to revive efforts to end the civil war in Syria.

Moscow and the United Nations, however, played down Syrian opposition assertions that its leader would hold a joint meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and U.N. envoy Lakhdar Brahimi in Munich.

Marxist group blamed for suicide bombing at US embassy in Turkey

A man approached a visitor’s gate at the U.S. embassy in the Turkish capital, Ankara, Friday afternoon and detonated an explosives-packed vest, killing himself and a Turkish security guard, blowing a gaping hole in the wall and raising new fears about the protection of U.S. diplomats serving in this region.

Within hours Turkish authorities blamed the attack on a homegrown Marxist organization, and Friday evening Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the issue had “pretty much been clarified” because the bomber had been identified, by a skin mark on his head, as a former prisoner once incarcerated for domestic terrorism. Mr. Erdogan said DNA testing was under way and would be announced Saturday.
