Aaron Swartz: Was a critic of Obama’s ‘kill list’ -- Surprise, surprise?

Prominent American blogger and computer prodigy Aaron Swartz, who spoke against US President Barack Obama’s “kill list” and cyber attacks against Iran, has been found dead in New York.

Police found the body of the 26-year-old in his apartment in New York City borough of Brooklyn on Friday, said a spokeswoman for the city’s chief medical examiner.

Brooklyn’s chief medical examiner ruled the death a suicide by hanging, but no further detail is available about the mysterious death.

Last year, Swartz openly criticized the US and the Israeli regime for launching joint cyber attacks against Iran.

The blogger was also vocal in criticizing Obama’s so-called kill list and other policies.

Obama has been reportedly approving the names put on the “kill lists” used in the targeted killing operations carried out by US assassination drones.

Every week or so, more than 100 members of the US national security team gather via secure video teleconference run by the Pentagon and go over the biographies of suspects in Yemen, Somalia, and Pakistan, and “nominate” those who should be targeted in the attacks.

Obama is then provided with the identities of those put on the “kill list” and signs off on every strike in Yemen and Somalia as well as the risky strikes in Pakistan.

Aaron Swartz Suicide stokes activist anger

Angry Internet activists mourned Sunday the loss of Aaron Swartz, a US programming prodigy who took his own life at just 26, weeks before he was due to go on trial for alleged computer fraud.

"Aaron did more than almost anyone to make the Internet a thriving ecosystem for open knowledge, and to keep it that way," wrote Peter Eckersley from Electronic Frontier Foundation, a leading advocate for online freedom.

"He refined advocacy for the progressive and open-information movement," said David Moon, program director for Demand Progress, a group Swartz co-founded to combat Internet censorship.

China pollution results in factory closures, flight cancellations

A prolonged spell of air pollution across a large area of China has led to the cancellation of flights and sporting activities and the closure of highways, factories and construction sites.

From Beijing to Guiyang, 1,400 miles to the southwest, the thick soup of pollution led the Chinese government to urge people to "avoid outdoor activities," and Beijing education authorities to cancel school gym classes.

As an emergency measure, the Beijing Environmental Protection Ministry announced Sunday that factories and construction sites had agreed to reduce or stop work entirely until the air cleared up.

France says US is providing communications and transport help to Mali military intervention

France claimed new successes in its campaign to oust Islamist extremists from northern Mali on Sunday, bombarding the major city of Gao with airstrikes targeting the airport and training camps used by the al-Qaida-linked rebel group controlling the city.

France’s foreign minister also said the 3-day-old intervention is gaining international support, with communications and transport help from the United States and backing from Britain, Denmark and other European countries.

Gun rights groups on Sunday forecast that bids to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips would fail in Congress, as Vice President Joe Biden prepares this week to give President Barack Obama proposals to curb gun violence.

Even some congressional Democrats indicated that a bill to revive the U.S. assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 would have a difficult time winning passage in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and Democratic-led Senate.

Flu Season Deaths Reach Epidemic Level but May Be at Peak, C.D.C. Says

Deaths in the current flu season have officially crossed the line into “epidemic” territory, federal health officials said Friday, adding that, on the bright side, there were also early signs that the caseloads could be peaking.

Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, speaking on a telephone news conference, again urged Americans to keep getting flu shots. At the same time, they emphasized that the shots are not infallible: a preliminary study rated this year’s vaccine as 62 percent effective, even though it is a good match for the most worrisome virus circulating. That corresponds to a rating of “moderately” effective — the vaccine typically ranges from 50 percent to 70 percent effective, they said.

Beijing Orders Official Cars Off Roads to Curb Pollution

Beijing ordered government vehicles off the roads as part of an emergency response to ease air pollution that has smothered China’s capital for the past three days, while warning the smog will persist until Jan. 16.

Hospitals were inundated with patients complaining of heart and respiratory ailments and the website of the capital’s environmental monitoring center crashed. Hyundai Motor Co. (005380)’s venture in Beijing suspended production for a day to help ease the pollution, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Official measurements of PM2.5, fine airborne particulates that pose the largest health risks, rose as high as 993 micrograms per cubic meter in Beijing last night, compared with World Health Organization guidelines of no more than 25.

Topless protest against Vatican's anti-gay stance

Mali - one African war France could not avoid

Just as its leaders were defining a new "hands-off" strategy for Africa, France has been thrust onto the front line of one of the continent's riskiest battlefields deep in the desert of Mali.

President Francois Hollande's backing of air strikes to halt Islamist rebels advancing on the capital Bamako raises the threat level for eight French hostages held by al Qaeda allies in the Sahara and for the 30,000 French expatriates living in neighboring, mostly Muslim states.

It could also trigger an attack on French soil. But, in what could be the biggest foreign policy decision of his presidency, Hollande bet that inaction bore a greater peril of producing a jihadist state like Afghanistan under the Taliban.

New York: Mentally challenged girl, 15, 'gang raped under her desk during class as teacher did NOTHING'

A mentally challenged 15-year-old New York girl endured a brutal gang rape as she was trapped beneath her by two boys with her teacher only feet away, alleges a lawsuit filed Friday.

The special needs student, identified only by the initials K.J., was allegedly sexually assaulted for 10 minutes as another student 'hit her on the head whenever she tried to escape,' during a science class at Martin De Porres Academy in Elmont, N.Y.

The girl's mother, who filed the suit, alleged that the teacher ignored the assault even as one student danced on the desk while another attempted to sodomize K.J.

Responding to whether he paved the way for staged reality shows, Springer said, “I am the father of the destruction of Western civilization. I have done that. But, frankly, I think we’ve got to give Eastern civilization a shock.”

Well, at least he’s willing to admit his role in society’s decline.

But Williamson did say Orange's remote-controlled planes would not be armed. The agency still needs approval from county leaders and the Federal Aviation Administration to use them. The FAA said it does not comment on drone applications.

Obama's gun control plan set to feature universal background checks for all buyers

With days to go before he presents his recommendations on gun control to President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden is reportedly centering his plan around universal background checks that would required of all gun buyers.

Mr Biden, who is leading a White House task force putting together the new legislation, told reporters Thursday he had found a 'surprising recurrence of suggestions' for "universal background checks" in meetings with interest groups.

Cameron is secretly backing a move by Tory MPs warning against Britain leaving Brussels.

David Cameron thinks it would be ‘mad’ for Britain to leave the EU and is secretly backing a move by Tory MPs to warn of the perils of cutting all our ties with Brussels.

The Prime Minister was also ‘pleased’ at US President Barack Obama sending a clear signal that the White House is opposed to the UK leaving the European Union.

The disclosures signal a key softening in tone in Mr Cameron’s rhetoric on Europe, and come a week ahead of his keynote speech on plans for an EU referendum after the next Election.

Weird weather: Temperature extremes coast to coast

Residents of large swaths of central and Southern California and Arizona shivered Saturday as plummeting temperatures prompted freeze warnings.

In Atlanta, meanwhile, shorts-wearing residents basked in the balmy weather as it and two other major Georgia cities set record highs for this date.

The weird weekend weather had temperatures as much as 30 degrees below normal in parts of the West and 30 degrees above normal in the East, said CNN meteorologist Jenny Harrison.

"We definitely have a temperature dichotomy across the U.S.," the National Weather Service said.

Tax pain ahead for Greeks as parliament approves increase

Greece's parliament approved a tax increase Saturday that should add to the government's revenue, but is likely to anger citizens opposed to the country's austerity measures.

The new tax bill, passed in the early hours, is needed to help the debt-stricken country meet its commitments to international creditors, state-run ANA news agency reported Saturday.

The legislation makes it compulsory for all taxpayers to lodge an income tax declaration while raising property and corporate taxes, the news agency said.

Fire threatens top Australian telescope site

Australia's top research observatory home to several telescopes used by scientists from around the world was under threat from wildfires on Sunday as hot weather and lightning storms stoked scores of new blazes.

The Rural Fire Service (RFS) of New South Wales, Australia's most populous state, issued an emergency warning for an out-of-control fire raging towards the Siding Spring Observatory, a remote global research facility.

"About a dozen isolated properties at Mt Woorut, including Siding Spring Observatory, may come under threat," the RFS said.

Israeli PM says he’ll move ahead with Jewish settlement seen as blow to Palestinian statehood

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to move ahead with building a Jewish settlement in a strategic area of the West Bank, speaking just hours after Israeli troops dragged anti-settlement protesters from the site marked for construction.

The planned settlement, known as E-1, would deepen east Jerusalem’s separation from the West Bank, both war-won areas the Palestinians want for their state.

On Friday, Palestinian and foreign activists pitched some 30 tents in the E-1 area to lay claim to the land. Protester Abdullah Abu Rahma says hundreds of soldiers evicted dozens of activists Sunday, took their ID numbers and released them.

Astronomers Find The Largest Known Spiral Galaxy

200 million light years from Earth is the galaxy NGC 6872, which astronomers have now confirmed as being the largest known spiral galaxy in the Universe. Tip to tip, the galaxy spans over 522,000 light years, making it five times bigger than the Milky Way.

Part of the reason for the galaxy’s size is its interaction with nearby galaxy, IC 4970 which interacted with NGC 6872 hundreds of millions of years ago. That interaction increased the size of NGC 6872, and also produced new star forming regions where stars much younger than the other stars in the two galaxies are now being born.

Simon Read: Complaints are soaring, but the banks still aren't listening

Have we become a nation of moaners? News this week that the Financial Ombudsman Service is being forced to recruit an extra 1,000 staff to cope with its increasing workload of complaints, could lead some to believe that we have.

But I reckon the opposite is still the case, and we still don't complain enough about shoddy service and being sold rubbish products.

The Ombudsman is anticipating a massive rise in complaints this year. The service says it expects to answer 2.2 million consumer enquiries in 2013-14 compared with 1.3 million last year.

Economy heading for triple-dip recession, NIESR warns

Pressure mounted on the chancellor to moderate his austerity programme after analysis by a leading thinktank showed the UK economy heading for a triple-dip recession and high profile employers Honda and Jessops cut hundreds of jobs

The National Institute for Economic and Social Research (NIESR) said in its monthly health check that the economy shrank by 0.3% in the three months to December. Against a backdrop of weak consumer spending and a drop in manufacturing output, the estimates from NIESR may add fuel to campaigns for George Osborne to adopt a more radical approach to generating growth.

Cleric leads thousands in Pakistan protest march

AP: Pakistani cleric Tahir-ul Qadri, center, surrounded by guards, is greeted by supporters after attending a press conference, in Lahore, Pakistan, Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013.

An influential Pakistani religious leader was to lead thousands of supporters out of Lahore on Sunday, kicking off a protest march on the capital to demand key reforms before looming elections.

Denis Allex: Hunt for missing soldier after failed hostage rescue

Helicopter-borne commandoes launched a raid on a hideout in a remote Somali bush village to free the agent from the clutches of al-Shabaab, the al-Qaeda-linked Somali militant group.

But in the “intense” firefight that followed, one French soldier was shot dead and a second ended up missing in action, while the hostage himself was also thought to have been killed.

Last night, however, al-Shabaab claimed that it had abducted the soldier from the scene and was now holding him as well as the original hostage, who it said had been held in a different location all along.

NYC Flu Outbreak Is Public Health Emergency

A public health emergency has been declared in New York after nearly 20,000 flu cases have been reported this season.

Officials are tackling the worst influenza outbreak in several years and an immunisation programme has been expanded to reduce the spread of the illness.

Pharmacists are not usually authorised to vaccinate children under 18 but New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has suspended this order to increase the number of people being protected.
