Egypt crisis: Cairo braced for rival protests

Egypt's capital Cairo is steeling itself for rival rallies sparked by a referendum on a new constitution ordered by President Mohamed Morsi.

Tuesday's demonstrations have been called by largely secular opposition groups and Islamists backing Mr Morsi.

He had earlier called in the army to maintain security and protect state institutions ahead of Saturday's vote, granting it powers to arrest civilians.

Syria: from revolution to all-out war

Syria's uprising has shifted from popular street protests against President Bashar al-Assad to a full-fledged war, increasingly influenced by armed Islamists, in a far cry from the idealism of the Arab Spring.

The fervour born in March 2011 for democratic reforms still runs high, but the initial peaceful protests against Assad's regime have been overtaken by the government forces' brutal crackdown.

'Vulture spying for Israel' caught in Sudan

Officials in Sudan say they have captured an electronically-tagged vulture suspected of being dispatched by Israel on a spying mission.

The avian discovery was made in Kereinek, a town in the Darfur region of western Sudan, Israeli media have reported.

Sudanese officials are said to have concluded that the bird was a secret agent after discovering it was fitted with GPS and solar-powered equipment capable of broadcasting images via satellite, according to Haaretz newspaper, which cited an Egyptian website, El Balad.

The vulture also had a tag attached to its leg with "Israel Nature Service" and "Hebrew University, Jerusalem", leading to accusations that it was on an Israeli surveillance mission.

The reports follow allegations by Sudan that Israel carried out the bombing of a munitions depot near the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, in October, after jamming the country's radar defences.

Israel has made no comment on the raid, which left two people dead. The arms depot was said to be supplying weapons to the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.

And just in case this seems like a tall tail, the article continues:

Israeli officials have acknowledged that the bird, which can fly up to 375 miles a day, had been tagged with Israeli equipment but insisted it was being used to study migration patterns.

Considering Israel just bombed Sudan as easily as someone orders a hamburger, is this just a paranoid story on Sudan's part, or the real deal?

Saudi Arabia says cyber attack aimed to disrupt oil, gas flow

Saudi Arabia's national oil company, Aramco, said on Sunday a cyber attack against it in August which damaged some 30,000 computers was aimed at stopping oil and gas production at the biggest OPEC exporter.

The attack on Saudi Aramco — which supplies a tenth of the world's oil — failed to disrupt production, but was one of the most destructive cyber strikes conducted against a single business.

Israel rejects EU outcry over new settlements

JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday scoffed at international criticism of his plans to build settler housing on occupied land east of Jerusalem.

Caution urged over Syria chemical weapons

When over the past 10 days President Barack Obama and senior US figures have warned Bashar al-Assad’s regime not to use chemical weapons against Syrian rebels, the comments have prompted two main questions among analysts.

What exactly is the intelligence that the US is seeing that makes it believe chemical weapons (or CW) might be used? And if chemical weapons are deployed by the regime, or fall into the hands of militants fighting Mr Assad, what can the US do about it?

EU less than peaceful ahead of Nobel ceremony

The Nobel committee considers the European Union a big project for peace and understanding. But ahead of the award ceremony, the EU is busy nit-picking and quibbling.

When the Chairman of the Nobel Committee, Thorbjörn Jagland, announced the decision on October 12th, 2012 in Oslo, the audience reacted with surprised whispering. But the committee said its decision made sense: The EU deserved the Nobel Peace Prize because "the Union and its forerunners have over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe." And that, according to the committee, was "the EU's most important result."

Egypt crisis: Morsi orders military to keep order

Egypt's President Morsi has ordered the military to maintain security and protect state institutions in the run-up to a referendum on the constitution.

The BBC's Jon Leyne in Cairo says the move will raise fears that Egypt is moving back towards military rule.

Mr Morsi has tried to calm days of protests by annulling a decree giving him huge powers, but a 15 December vote on a new constitution is to go ahead.

Opposition leaders rejected the move and called for protests on Tuesday.

At Least Six Killed, Over 40 Injured in Guatemala Bus Crash

At least six people were killed and over 40 injured after a passenger bus crashed plunging into a 30 meters (almost 100 feet) deep ravine in the southwest of Guatemala, local media reported.

Four people, including two teenagers, died at the scene of the accident, while two more died later in a hospital. Many of the injured remain hospitalized in a critical condition.

Police say the accident could be caused by driver’s violation of a speed limit, failure in the braking system of the vehicle or because the bus was overloaded.
