Catalans Back Pro-Independence Parties

Voters in Catalonia have overwhelmingly backed parties that favour breaking away from Spain, but the region's biggest party saw its majority in parliament fall.

Artur Mas, the current Catalonia president and leader of the centre-right Covergence and Union (CiU) alliance, had promised a referendum on "self-determination" if the election had given him a strong mandate.

However, with just 50 seats in the 135-seat regional parliament the CiU was 18 short of the absolute majority he desired.

Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood HQ Clashes 'Kill One'

At least one person has been killed in clashes outside an office of Egypt's ruling Muslim Brotherhood, reports say.

The violence at the Freedom and Justice Party headquarters in the Nile Delta town of Damanhour came amid widespread anger in Egypt over President Mohamed Morsi's decision to grant himself sweeping new powers.

"Brotherhood member, Islam Fathy Masoud, 15, was killed and 60 were injured after thugs attacked the Muslim Brotherhood's headquarters in Damanhour in the total absence of police forces," the party's website said.

Gas Worker's Blunder Caused Strip Club Blast

An explosion which flattened a strip club in Springfield, Massachusetts, has been blamed on a gas worker who accidentally pierced a high-pressure pipeline while looking for a leak.

The blast levelled the Scores Gentlemen's Club on Friday evening, and blew out the windows of dozens more buildings up to three blocks away.

Eighteen people were hurt. Most of the injured were part of a group of gas workers, firefighters and police officers who ducked for cover behind a lorry just before the blast.

Officials said it was a miracle no one was killed.

Drivers 'Risking Lives' On Flooded Roads

Rescue services have told drivers to stop motoring into flood waters as strong winds and heavy rains bring chaos to the country's roads.

Emergency crews said that motorists must remember that while their vehicles may be four-wheel drives, they are not "amphibious".

According to the West Midlands Ambulance Service there has been a surprisingly high number of call-outs to 4x4 vehicles as people try to find short cuts away from flooded roads across country.

'Satellites show Iran moving quickly to rearm Hamas'

Israeli intelligence satellites have spied the loading of rockets and other materiel believed to be destined for the Gaza Strip, The Sunday Times reported citing Israeli officials.

Arafat's Remains to Be Exhumed Tuesday

RAMALLAH, West Bank—The remains of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat will be exhumed Tuesday as part of a renewed investigation into his death, a Palestinian investigator said Saturday.

Arafat died in November 2004 in a French military hospital, a month after suddenly falling ill. Palestinian officials claim he was poisoned by Israel, but haven't presented evidence. Israel has denied such allegations.

Earlier this year, the detection of a lethal radioactive substance in biological traces on Arafat's clothing sparked a new investigation. Tests were inconclusive, and experts said they need to check his remains to learn more.

The turmoil in Egypt underscores just how fragile the post-Arab Spring situation is

Following his phenomenal diplomatic success in brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has unexpectedly ignited a war in domestic politics. His declaration on November 22 arrogating extraordinary powers to the office of the president over the judiciary and other public institutions blocking the revolution has triggered mass unrest across Egypt and kick-started a cycle of confrontation and realignment among different political factions.

Massive crowds hailing from different ideological camps chanting, "Morsi is the new Mubarak" (i.e. former strongman Hosni Mubarak who was toppled and jailed after the first winds of the Arab Spring), and that the "revolution is incomplete" are demonstrating that nothing is settled yet. When such turbulence hits Egypt — the weathervane and natural leader of the Arab world — the impact will ripple throughout the Middle East.

More than 150,000 forced off benefits after refusing to participate in Iain Duncan-Smith's back-to-work scheme

More than 150,000 jobless people have been stripped of benefits after refusing to accept help to get back into work.

One in ten long-term unemployed on the Government’s flagship back-to-work programme opted to go without benefit rather than accept help to get them a job.

And thousands more voluntarily stop claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance as soon as they are referred to the Work Programme.

Hidden public service cuts will drain Britain's poorest families of 30 per cent of their annual income by 2017, as the coalition's tough spending targets begin to bite, new TUC research reveals.

It said reductions in benefits and family tax credits, combined with continuing cuts to welfare, will 'cause considerable financial harm for millions of families'.

The dire predictions come as chancellor George Osborne prepares to deliver his autumn statement on December 5, in which he is expected to detail a further £10bn of welfare savings over the next five years.

Two suicide bombs killed at least 11 people on Sunday at a church in a barracks in northern Nigeria, where the Islamist sect Boko Haram is waging a campaign of violence, the military said.

Mursi power grab strains stability amid protests

Egypt's stock market plunged on Sunday in its first day open since Islamist President Mohamed Mursi's seizure of new powers set off street violence and a political crisis, unraveling efforts to restore stability after last year's revolution.

More than 500 people have been injured in protests since Friday, when Egyptians awoke to news Mursi had issued a decree temporarily widening his powers and shielding his decisions from judicial review.

Mursi and the judiciary hinted at compromise to avert a full-scale political crisis.

Italy centre left picks candidate for next prime minister

Italy's centre left voted on Sunday to choose the candidate who will be the leading contender to succeed Mario Monti as prime minister after an election in March and take charge of steering the country through a deep recession.

Opinion surveys show Democratic Party leader Pier Luigi Bersani is the frontrunner among five candidates, followed by Florence mayor Matteo Renzi, who has vowed to shake up Italy's political establishment if he is chosen to lead the alliance.

The vote will eliminate a major element of uncertainty in choosing a successor to Monti's technocrat government.

UKIP leader's fury after member is banned by Barnardo's from caring for children

A row over two UKIP members having their foster children removed took a new twist last night when another woman claimed she had been barred from looking after children because she was a party candidate.

Nigel Farage, UKIP leader, condemned ‘another appalling case of discrimination’ after former district nurse Anne Murgatroyd said she had been prevented from volunteering as a mentor for young adults by leading children’s charity Barnardo’s.

Ms Murgatroyd, a mother of three, claims she told the charity of her political affiliation and was told it would ‘not be appropriate’ for her to perform the role, which involves supporting children coming out of the care system, because UKIP ‘opposes multi-culturalism’.

The charity said there were other reasons for Ms Murgatroyd’s rejection but refused to disclose further details.

Overpass collapse kills 11 in Bangladesh; protests erupt

At least 11 people were killed and scores others injured when an under-construction overpass collapsed in southeastern Bangladesh, police said Sunday.

"We've recovered 11 bodies so far, and the death toll may rise further as the rescuers are yet to remove the rubble of the girders of the flyover, which collapsed Saturday night," said Mirazuddin Ahmed, deputy commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.

Police said about 20 people remained trapped after three concrete beams of the overpass -- each 42 meters long -- collapsed in Bangladesh's second-largest city.

Egyptian judges have condemned a decree granting President Mohamed Morsi sweeping new powers, as angry protesters clashed with police for a second day.

A handful of rock-throwing activists battled riot police in the streets near Tahrir Square, where several thousand protesters massed on Friday to demonstrate against the decree, which effectively prevents Mr Morsi's decisions from being challenged.

The move also removed powers from the judiciary and allows the president to take any measures to protect national security.
