Greek Debt Solution Eludes Euro Ministers After 11-Hour Talks

European finance ministers failed to agree on a debt-reduction package for Greece after battling with the International Monetary Fund over how to nurse the recession- wracked country back to fiscal health.

With creditors led by Germany refusing to put up fresh money or offer debt relief, the finance chiefs were unable to scrounge together enough funds from other sources to help alleviate Greece’s debt burden, set to hit 190 percent of gross domestic product in 2014.

GAZA WAR – THE MYTH OF THE ‘HUMAN SHIELD’

lataan.blogspot.ca/2012/11/gaza-war-myth-of-human-shield.html

Matt's thoughts:

Some intriguing points are brought up.

1. Beware Hamas interviews. The IDF continually warns reporters not to go near Hamas because "they will use you as human shields." Strangely, that doesn't appear to matter though, since the IDF has now killed a number of reporters and media personnel in Gaza, and bombed media facilities. Is this an honest reason, or do they simply not want Hamas to gain any interview time? Isn't such behavior contradictory to a democracy?

2. Rockets are being fired from civilian areas. But where in Gaza isn't a civilian area? Millions of people are packed into a strip of desert and beach, and it's actually the most densely populated area in the world. The only way for Hamas to not wage war from a civilian area is to not wage war at all, which I imagine many would have no problem with. But, if you were under embargo and suffered similar circumstances, would you be able to so easily lay down your arms? Is the reality of the situation being acknowledged?

3. Gazans should go to safe zones. But where? Israel forbids the construction of air raid sirens. Israel also restricts supplies of concrete to Gaza as a part of the embargo to prevent the construction of bunkers and the reconstruction of facilities. Where are people supposed to go?

4. Hamas takes advantage of you. But Hamas didn't seize power is some sort of coup, it was directly elected by Gazans. Many seem to be forgetting that this isn't a war between a democracy and a tyranny, but two democracies. Do any have the right to overthrow the elected?

‘No Twitter for Terrorists’: pro-Israel CUFI group demands Hamas tweet ban in censorship bid

http://english.alarabiya.net/articles/2012/11/20/250678.html

Matt's thoughts:

1. Note the two initial messages in the image above that sparked the "Twitter War". When you get down to it, they're the same identical message: "We're going to kill you, so watch out." Strangely though, while the IDF is allowed to make such threats, Hamas is not. Shouldn't both be censored if the honest intention is to prevent groups from spreading hate and violence using Twitter?

2. If a cause is in the right, why would they want to censor the other side? Are they afraid of something? Won't their own principles light the way and overcome, regardless?

3. The absurdity of the Christian-Jew-Muslim battle of eternity can be aptly summarized in the following comment left on the above article, quoted without editing:

"The christians, for the past 2000 years nearly exterminated jews in Europe with numerous pogroms starting with inquisition and culminating in holocaust. After that they exported their headache to peaceful middleast where jews christians and muslims co-extisted for millennia. Now they want to make sure that jews are stay put in israel and do not come back to Europe or US by supporting genocidal zionists who incinerate children and blitz newsmen and banks."

Have we all begun to lose our minds? Have we become the "enemy" we're seeking to eradicate?

West concerned about fuel move at Iran nuclear power plant

Western officials voiced concern on Tuesday about what they described as an unexpected unloading of fuel at Iran's first nuclear energy plant and said Tehran, which has dismissed it as a normal step, must clarify the issue.

The U.N. nuclear agency said in a confidential report on Friday that fuel assemblies were transferred last month from the reactor core of the Russian-built Bushehr plant to a spent fuel pond, but it gave no reason for the move.

Eurozone risks prolonged recession

LONDON (CNNMoney) -- Investors want to believe eurozone policymakers can resolve the debt crisis. But the risk of a prolonged recession is rising, and with it the chances that more action will be needed to shore up the currency area.

A full 86% of fixed-income investors surveyed by Fitch Ratings said the European Central Bank's commitment to buy bonds of troubled eurozone nations, and European Union's plans for a banking union represent major positive steps, although 81% acknowledged "significant economic, financial and political risks remain."

Israel: Gaza Ceasefire Is 'Not There Yet'

An Israeli government spokesman has told Sky News a ceasefire with Gaza militants is "not there yet" as Hamas claims a truce will begin tonight.

Hamas official Ayman Taha said earlier that an Egyptian-brokered truce had been finalised and would take effect from 10pm UK time.

But spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Mark Regev said the announcement of a ceasefire was premature and Israeli military operations in Gaza would continue in parallel with diplomacy.

Iran says Palestinians should be equipped to defend themselves

Palestinians should be "equipped" to defend themselves against Israel as it carries out air strikes on Gaza, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman said on Tuesday, adding that Tehran's alliances with Palestinian Islamist groups remained strong.

Israel began air strikes on Gaza on Wednesday, with the declared goal of deterring Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that runs the Gaza Strip, from launching rockets that have plagued its southern communities for years.

Cameron braced for "mission impossible" on EU budget

Battling rebels baying for Britain to leave the European Union, David Cameron faces the near impossible task this week of finding an EU budget deal acceptable to mutinous party members and to exasperated fellow EU leaders.

The prime minister's threat to veto the union's long-term budget at a Brussels summit starting on Thursday appealed to the anti-EU wing of his Conservative Party, emboldened after defeating him in a parliamentary vote calling for European spending cuts.

Blocking a deal might tap into a hardening Eurosceptical mood at home, but it would not bury an issue that felled his predecessor Margaret Thatcher, fomented civil war in his party in the 1990s and helped keep it in opposition for 13 years.

Obama's Asia tour doesn't go according to plan... At least he had a well deserved tax funded Tropical Holiday

It may have sounded good on paper: Win re-election, fly to Asia, soak up the adulation of fellow world leaders, then go home with at least a few tangible rewards to show for a legacy-shaping U.S. strategic shift eastwards.

But U.S. President Barack Obama's first post-election trip abroad did not work out exactly according to plan.

To be sure, he had a chance to tout a foreign policy success with a landmark visit to the former pariah state of Myanmar, demonstrate he was serious about improved U.S. ties with nations in China's backyard and take in a travelogue's worth of iconic religious and cultural sights.

But even as Obama sought to strengthen his administration's "Asia pivot," he came face-to-face with the tough realities of what it will take to counter China's influence in the region.

America And The New 'Great Game' With China

President Obama's Burma trip was about symbolism: a signal from America that it believes the country's reforming government is moving in the right direction.

But the last leg of his Asia tour - to Cambodia - is, in global terms, far more important.

A key strand to America's foreign policy for the next decade is the 'Pacific pivot'.

Mr Obama calls himself the 'Pacific President'. Why?

Because America is anxious about the increasing dominance of China.

Israel and Hamas: How the conflict reignited

The longstanding conflict between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas reignited last week after Israel launched airstrikes against what it called terrorist targets in Gaza.

Israel explained that the offensive, which it calls "Operation Pillar of Defense," was necessitated by increasing rocket attacks from the Hamas-controlled territory.

Among those killed in the Israeli airstrikes Wednesday was Ahmed al-Ja'abari, the chief of Hamas' military wing. Weapons depots and rocket-launching sites were also targeted.

NYC serial killer has possible fixation on number '8'

New York City police seem to have a bizarre murder mystery on their hands with the serial killer possibly having a fixation on the number 8. According to Fox News Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, a serial killer has killed three shopkeepers and all their shops had the number 8 in the addresses.

It seems that the unknown suspect uses a .22-caliber gun and the shopkeepers were all killed while they were closing up their stores for the night. All three shops have the number 8 in their addresses, which is a link that police are now looking into.

“We’re definitely looking into the number-8 angle,” a law-enforcement source told the newspaper. “But we’re not any closer to solving the case because of it.”

MPs demand MORE expenses so they can afford to live in Westminster... because they don't want to catch the night bus

MPs are demanding a bigger expenses bill so they can live in some of London’s most expensive districts – and avoid using public transport.

Officials at the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) insisted ‘MPs should, where possible, be treated in the same manner as other citizens’ but is now considering increasing the rent limits so MPs can live within walking distance of the Houses of Parliament.

Lord McAlpine to ask 10,000 Twitter users who falsely linked him to child abuse scandal for apology and £5 compensation

Lord McAlpine's lawyers plan to ask for a formal apology and a £5 donation to a children's charity from thousands of Twitter users who allegedly wrote tweets falsely linking him to child abuse.

The estimated 10,000 Twitter users who tweeted or 'retweeted' the Conservative peer's name would avoid legal action by doing so, his representatives said.

Child Sex Gang Suspects Held In Police Raids

Police have arrested eight suspected members of a child sex gang during a series of dawn raids on several homes in Buckinghamshire.

The men, aged between 21 and 28, were held on suspicion of committing sexual offences against a girl.

Thames Valley Police said the girl, who is under 18, reported being abused between 2007 and 2012, but investigators believe other victims may have fallen prey to the same group and urged them to come forward.

US embassy in Tel Aviv: Man held over knife and axe attack

A man has been arrested after a security guard was wounded in an attack at the US embassy in Israel's commercial capital Tel Aviv.

The attack was carried out at the entrance to the embassy by a man wielding a knife and an axe.

Guards at the embassy, located close to the city's seafront, then fired warning shots in return.

An Israeli police spokesperson said that the attack was probably not politically motivated.

The Palestinians are isolated, but this massacre in Gaza is Israel's response to a weaker Syria

With over 100 now reported killed by Israeli airstrikes, and a further 700 injured, the attack on Gaza is already starting to resemble the 2008-9 ‘Operation Cast Lead’ massacre. A ground invasion is feared, and Israeli politicians are again trotting out the usual Zionist crowd-pleasers about the need to “bomb Gaza back to the Middle Ages” (Deputy Prime Minister Eli Yishai) and “flatten all of Gaza” (Ariel Sharon’s son Gilad).

Yet the regional situation today is very different to what it was back then. In 2009, the ‘resistance axis’ of Iran, Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas was strong, and Iran took concrete steps to provide military supplies to Hamas at a time when the best any other states had to offer was impotent - and generally hypocritical - ‘condemnation’. As intelligence analysts Stratfor have noted, where “the rest of the region largely avoided direct involvement…. Iran was the exception."

UFO Sightings Inside Indian Territory Bordering China Raises Security Concerns

Top security brass of the Indian government is battling a“mysterious” threat from the Chinese side these days: tennis ball-sized UFOs.

Hundreds of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) have been sighted inside the Indian territory bordering China in recent months, raising security concerns. The issue, initially dubbed a minor one, has turned serious as India prepares to raise it at the diplomatic level with China.

Sources said a meeting of the boundary coordination mechanism – a highlevel official mechanism set up by the two sides to ensure that the boundary incidents between their armed forces do not escalate – is being scheduled later this month where the issue of “luminous objects” will be at the centre of the discussion.

Gilad Sharon, Son Of Ex-PM Ariel Sharon, Calls On Israel To 'Flatten Gaza'

The son of former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon has called for more aggressive tactics against Hamas, calling on the Israel Defence Force to "flatten Gaza" like the US flattened Japan.

Gilad Sharon, a columnist for Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, who runs the Sharon family’s farm, wrote in an op-ed for English language newspaper the Jerusalem Post: "What does a decisive victory sound like? A Tarzan-like cry that lets the entire jungle know in no uncertain terms just who won, and just who was defeated.

"To accomplish this, you need to achieve what the other side can’t bear, can’t live with, and our initial bombing campaign isn’t it."

U.S. 'dark pool' trades up 50%

Trading of US equities on "dark pools" has grown by almost a half in the past three years to account for nearly a third of total market volume, according to research that underscores the challenge facing international regulators.

The shift from transparent public exchanges has highlighted growing concern among asset managers and global regulators about off-exchange trading, where prices are reported only after deals are executed.

Such venues allow investors to trade large blocks of shares anonymously, with prices posted publicly only after trades are done.

Who or What is killing dolphins in Gulf Coast?

Conservation experts and federal agents say they're looking into the violent deaths of several bottlenose dolphins along the northern Gulf Coast this year, including one that was shot and another that was stabbed with a screwdriver.

"I can't explain why anyone would shoot a dolphin," Jeff Radonski, a Florida-based special agent for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told CNN. Radonski said NOAA is investigating four of the six deaths reported since June.

Samia Ahmad, a spokeswoman for the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, Mississippi, said at least six dolphins had died as a result of foul play since January. In one case, a dolphin had its jaw cut off, she said.

Kappa Andromedae b: Super-Jupiter spotted 170 light years away

Scientists have discovered what could be a massive planet outside our solar system, NASA said Monday.

Astronomers used infrared data from the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii to identify Kappa Andromedae b, a "super-Jupiter" object that appears to be nearly 13 times the mass of Jupiter.

The planet orbits a star called Kappa Andromedae. It's not entirely certain whether Kappa Andromedae b is a planet, however, NASA said. If it can generate energy by fusion, it would be considered a "brown dwarf" star.
