Turkey raps Israel on Gaza, to discuss with U.S., Egypt

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan decried Israeli's air strikes on Gaza on Friday as a pre-election stunt and said he would discuss the crisis with Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi in Cairo this weekend.

Under Erdogan's Islamist-rooted AK Party, Turkey has sought to use its clout as a rising democratic power in the Muslim world to increase its influence in the Middle East, distancing itself from former ally Israel.

Thousands protest in Egypt against Gaza attacks

Thousands protested in Egyptian cities on Friday against Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip and Egypt's president vowed to support the enclave's population in the face of "blatant aggression".

Western governments are watching Egypt's response to the attacks for signs of a more assertive stance towards Israel since an Islamist came to power in the Arab world's most populous nation.

President Mohamed Mursi is mindful of anti-Israeli sentiment among Egyptians emboldened by last year's Arab Spring uprising but needs to show Western allies his new government is no threat to Middle East peace.

Israeli ministers were on Friday asked to endorse the call-up of up to 75,000 reservists after Palestinian militants nearly hit Jerusalem with a rocket for the first time in decades and fired at Tel Aviv for a second day.

The rocket attacks were a challenge to Israel's Gaza offensive and came just hours after Egypt's prime minister, denouncing what he described as Israeli aggression, visited the enclave and said Cairo was prepared to mediate.

Census: U.S. Poverty Rate Spikes, Nearly 50 Million Americans Affected

As President Barack Obama is set to begin his second term, new statistics on America’s poverty rate indicate that nearly 50 million Americans, more than 16 percent of the population, are struggling to survive.

New figures released by the Census Bureau this week found a spike in poverty numbers last year, going from 49 million in 2010 to 49.7 million last year. The numbers may come as a surprise to Congress, which estimated in September that the poverty rate would drop to 46.2 million. One of the most startling findings showed that almost 20 percent of American children continue to live in poverty.

Pentagon spends $1.5 million to develop new beef jerky

Mr. Coburn said that over the next decade, the Defense Department will spend $6 billion on non-military research, $9 billion on running grocery stores, and some $37 billion on support and supply services that could better be done by civilians or the private sector.
Among the more curious spending was:

• $300,000 spent by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research to fund Brown University's research into archaeopteryx, the 150-million-year-old early bird, in which the researchers determined the creature likely had black feathers.
• an Office of Naval Research research project that helped spawn Caffeine Zone 2, an iPhone application that tells people how to schedule their coffee breaks.
• $1.5 million to develop a special new roll-up beef jerky, which Mr. Coburn said was funded by taking money out of a weapons program.

Eurozone back in recession as even Germany totters and anti-austerity protests break out across continent

The eurozone has fallen into a double dip recession, as the debt crisis even manages to slow Germany's powerhouse economy to a virtual standstill.

The 17-country region - which generates a fifth of global output - shrank by 0.1 per cent in the July-September period and by 0.2 per cent in the previous three months. Two quarters running of contraction make the recession official.

Germany and France, the eurozone's biggest economies, could not save the bloc from a double-dip even though both countries managed 0.2 per cent growth in the recent quarter.

Banks seen shrinking for good as lay-offs near 160,000

Major banks have announced some 160,000 job cuts since early last year and with more lay-offs to come as the industry restructures, many will leave the shrinking sector for good as redundancies outpace new hires by roughly two-to-one.

A Reuters analysis of job cuts announced by 29 major banks showed the lay-offs were much bigger in Europe than in Asia or the United States. That is a particular blow to Britain where the finance industry makes up roughly 10 percent of the economy.

Gaza: Fresh Attacks As Egypt PM Visits

Israel and Hamas militants have been exchanging fire this morning despite a temporary ceasefire in place for a visit by Egypt's Prime Minister to Gaza.

Several sites in southern Israel have been hit by rockets fired from inside the Gaza Strip and the Israeli air force has responded by attacking a Hamas commander's house.

Medics said the attack killed two people, one of them a child, raising the Palestinian death toll since Wednesday to 21. Three Israelis were killed by a rocket on Thursday.

Ballot box rout gives Cameron ANOTHER headache over Europe as fed-up Tories flock to UKIP in Corby by-election

David Cameron will today face fresh pressure to take a tougher line on Europe after thousands of disgruntled Tory voters backed the UK Independence Party in key elections.

UKIP is expected to have cost the Conservatives major support in the Corby by-election to choose a replacement for Tory Louise Mensch, who quit as the town's MP to live in America.

It is also thought that a surge in Eurosceptic support and protest votes for Nigel Farage's UKIP could deprive the Tories of victory in some of the 41 police and crime commissioner elections.
