French PM Ayrault meets Merkel in Berlin

“We share the conviction that the Franco-German relationship is necessary, it is our political inheritance,” said Mr Ayrault.

But the new Franco-German axis has yet to get in the groove on the right euro zone dosage of austerity and stimulus; the future of Greece; and the EU budget to 2020.

Berlin wants a more modest budget but Mr Ayrault insisted ahead of his visit that France is “prepared neither to give up the Common Agricultural Policy nor the cohesion funds”.

Eurozone slumps back into recession after austerity cuts

The eurozone has double-dipped back into its second recession in three years, official figures confirmed yesterday – and analysts warned economic pain across the single currency will continue well into 2013.

Output across the 17-member bloc fell by 0.1 per cent over the third quarter of 2012, following a 0.2 per cent decline in the second quarter, according to Eurostat.

The radical Muslim cleric Abu Qatada has, two days after his release from prison, had his request for a new home granted following protests outside his supposedly secret front door. He will leave the £400,000 property in Wembley, north-west London, where his rent is paid by the taxpayer, for a secret address.

In a statement, his barrister Edward Fitzgerald, QC, said: "The family are going to relocate and therefore Mr Qatada would accept the Home Office-approved accommodation."

Markets slip on news of eurozone double-dip recession

The FTSE 100 in London finished down 0.8pc at 5,677.75, while the CAC 40 in Paris slipped 0.5pc to 3,382.40 and Frankfurt's DAX 30 fell 0.8pc to 7,043.42.

Although French and German growth proved resilient, the eurozone slipped back into recession between July and September, contracting 0.1pc on top of a 0.2pc drop in the second quarter.

Yesterday it was revealed that Greece's economy had shrank for the 17th consecutive quarter and is now 7.2pc smaller than it was at the same time last year, triggering fresh protests for austerity programmes to be overhauled.

Merkel urges quick decision on Greece, rejects "haircut"

German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged European finance ministers to come up with a quick solution for Greece's strained finances but rejected the idea that governments might accept losses on loans already given to Athens.

"I hope that the time is near when we can reach the solution that is needed," Merkel said when asked about Greece at a joint news conference with French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault.

"Of course we did not talk about debt haircuts, you know our view and that has not changed, nor should it," she said.

Some Conservatives Voice Petraeus Conspiracy Theories

It's the soap opera that shocked official Washington and ensnared a previously squeaky clean CIA director at a time when he was supposed to play a role in the accounting for a possible security misstep in Libya.

We don't know all the facts of why the FBI started investigating David Petraeus' biographer and how it ultimately led to his resignation.

But a growing number of conservative commentators contend that the resignation of former CIA Director David Petraeus is more than simple amends made for a personal wrong.

Spain approved measures on Thursday to help the most needy families facing eviction, a growing problem in the recession-bound nation highlighted last week by the suicide of a woman whose home bailiffs came to seize.

U.S. to China: Let's talk nukes

China is modernizing its military at a "remarkable rate," including its own nuclear weapons capability, says a congressionally mandated panel exploring the relationship between the United States and China.

In its annual report to Congress, the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission said China has spent the past two decades improving and advancing its military nuclear posture and could have a "triad" of land, sea and air delivery systems "within the next two years."

China's People's Liberation Army "reportedly tested a variety of new nuclear ballistic systems in 2012, including a submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile," Dennis Shea, chairman of the commission, told reporters Wednesday.

"We just urge Congress to get a better handle on the size of the Chinese nuclear arsenal, as well as the nuclear doctrine of China."

Israel targets 100 sites in Gaza; U.N. calls for 'maximum restraint'

Israel continued a blistering assault early Thursday against Gaza, targeting what it described as 100 terror sites in response to ongoing rocket attacks by Palestinian militants, a move that has raised fears of a widening conflict that could lead to an Israeli ground assault.

The countering Israeli and Palestinian attacks prompted the U.N. Security Council to call an emergency closed door session late Wednesday in an attempt to de-escalate the crisis. International diplomats hope to stave off a repeat of Israel's widely condemned 2008 assault that saw its forces go into Gaza after a similar spate of rocket attacks by Palestinian militants.

Full Employment Not Expected Until After the Next Presidential Election

After parsing the unemployment report that was issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on Friday, November 2nd, two scholars at the Heritage Foundation, Rea Hederman and James Sherk, concluded that at the present jobs growth rate it could take another five years for a full jobs recovery to occur from the Great Recession. That would place the recovery after the next presidential election in 2016, and nearly ten years after the start of the recession in December 2007.

Noting that 125,000 new jobs must be created every month just to keep up with population growth, they turned to the “jobs calculator” offered at the website of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and asked it to determine how long it would take for job growth to return to normal, based on the average job growth over the past three months (170,000). The answer: the summer of 2017.

BBC Palestine journalist cradles dead baby son after Israeli rocket attack on Gaza

Gently cradling the tiny body of his young son to his chest, Jihad Masharawi's devastation is heartbreaking as tears stream down his face.

The BBC Arabic picture editor's 11-month-old son Omar was injured in Gaza by an Israeli airstrike yesterday and despite being rushed to a local hopsital, he was pronounced dead.

Israeli aircraft, tanks and naval gunboats pounded the Gaza Strip as Israel targeted the Islamic militants - the attack resulted in the death of eleven Palestinians including young Omar.

Violent clashes as austerity protests grip EU cities

Clashes in Lisbon left nearly 50 people hurt while in Spain at least 70 were injured and some 140 arrests were made.

Wednesday's action was co-ordinated by the European Trade Union Confederation. One of its officials, Judith Kirton-Darling, told the BBC that austerity was not working.

"It's increasing inequalities, it's increasing the social instability in society and it's not resolving the economic crisis," she said.

Belize PM to McAfee: 'come forward man'

Prime Minister Dean Barrow urged anti-virus software pioneer John McAfee, wanted for questioning in the murder of a neighbor, to turn himself in to Belizean authorities.

McAfee, 67, told CNBC television Tuesday that he was moving every four hours to avoid police who want to question him about the murder of fellow American Gregory Faull, a Florida native who was found dead at his home in a pool of blood.

"Mr McAfee is a person of interest," Barrow said in a phone interview broadcast on national radio and television.

Thieving EU: Herman Van Rompuy tries to grab £2.5bn back from Britain's EU rebate

In a secret paper, seen by The Daily Telegraph, the EU president has proposed cutting the annual refund, which is worth £3.2 billion a year, by over 10 per cent during a seven year Brussels budgetary plan for 2014 to 2020.

The move piles further pressure on David Cameron just one week before the Prime Ministers faces his toughest battle at a Brussels summit that will determine the level of EU spending for seven years.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/eu/9679833/Herman-Van-Rompuy-tries-to-grab-2.5bn-back-from-Britains-EU-rebate.html

More than 9 million people took to the streets yesterday, showing more backbone than any of our governments have done since joining the EU.

With plenty of summits, expensive trips, wasted funds and plenty of talking we have landed officially back in Recession. Most of us that are awake of course realize that we never left it in the first place, but hey if its sounds better this way for the EU so be it.

The 9 million will soon turn into 18 million if not more, what will they do then?, will there be a figure somewhere in magical Brussels which will make them take notice that something isn't right? I doubt that, but all the talking in the world or magical bail outs will not fix a flawed system.

Eurozone Enters Recession Again

The Eurozone has officially entered recession after its collective economic output was found to have fallen by 0.1% in the third quarter.

Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, found that the collective GDP of the single currency area contracted by 0.1% in the July to September period from the quarter before following on from the 0.2% decline recorded in the second quarter.

FEMA sold disaster shelters as 'Frankenstorm' gathered strength

Federal officials sold hundreds of emergency trailers for disaster victims at fire-sale prices in the months before Hurricane Sandy churned toward the United States, The Washington Examiner has learned.

Now, with thousands of families left homeless in New York and New Jersey by the hurricane, those same federal officials are poised to spend more taxpayer dollars to buy brand-new trailers.

In all, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has sold nearly 900 of the prefabricated temporary homes - none more than four years old and most used only once

Pakistan to free 'a number of Taliban'

Pakistan agreed to free "a number of Taliban detainees" from its prisons "in support of peace and reconciliation" efforts in Afghanistan, Pakistan's foreign ministry said Wednesday.

The announcement followed three days of meetings in Islamabad between Pakistani officials and a high-level delegation from Afghanistan's High Peace Council, which is trying to get the Taliban to negotiate peace in that country.

Jordanian protesters make rare move: speak out against King Abdullah

Syrian opposition leader expects more from U.S.

The newly elected leader of the Syrian opposition, cleric Sheikh Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib, said President Barack Obama's comments Wednesday about the war-torn country represent a much-appreciated "good step initially."

During a news conference, Obama said he was encouraged to see the Syrian opposition organizing under an umbrella group and considers them a "legitimate representative of the aspirations of the Syrian people." However, the president also said he isn't prepared to recognize the group as "some sort of government in exile," and he won't give weaponry directly to the rebels, because of concerns about "extremist elements" who might do harm to Americans or Israelis.

Broadwell had "substantial" classified data

A computer used by Paula Broadwell, the woman whose affair with CIA Director David Petraeus led to his resignation, contained substantial classified information that should have been stored under more secure conditions, law enforcement and national security officials said on Wednesday.

The contents and amount of the classified material - and questions about how Broadwell got it - are significant enough to warrant a continuing investigation, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to comment publicly.

Battle lines drawn over "growth revenue"

The holy grail of conservative tax policy - the theory that lower tax rates will generate stronger revenues by turbo-charging economic growth - has sprung back to life and is stirring controversy again in Washington.

The so-called "dynamic scoring" theory, disputed by many independent economists, has formed the basis of Republicans' defensive line on negotiations over the year-end "fiscal cliff" of looming tax hikes and automatic spending cuts.

Myanmar to free 452 prisoners ahead of Obama visit

Myanmar said it would free 452 prisoners in a goodwill gesture ahead of a historic visit to the former military state by U.S. President Barack Obama, but activists and the main opposition party said it was not clear if political detainees were among them.

State media said on Thursday the prisoners would be freed with the "intent to help promote goodwill and the bilateral relationship". A Home Ministry official said some "prisoners of conscience" would be among them.

EU Back in Recession....Did we leave it?

Germany and France each grew by 0.2 percent in the third quarter but with the euro zone's debt-laden members suffering deeply, the currency bloc as a whole is likely to have slid into recession.

The quarterly performance of Europe's dominant economy reported on Thursday was in line with forecasts and analysts said it could not defy gravity for much longer. The French economy surprised on the upside, having been expected to post no growth at all after a revised 0.1 percent fall in the second quarter.

9 Million + Protest - Anti-austerity strikes sweep across Europe

Police and protesters clashed in Spain and Italy on Wednesday as millions of workers went on strike in organized labour’s biggest Europe-wide challenge to austerity policies since the euro zone debt crisis erupted three years ago.

Hundreds of flights were cancelled, schools were shut, factories were at a standstill and trains barely ran in Spain and Portugal where unions held their first joint general strike. Stoppages in Belgium interrupted international rail services.

Red Cross and FEMA spent $181,000 to put up Sandy relief workers in Manhattan's upscale Soho Grand hotel...

While tens of thousands of victims of Hurricane Sandy continue to struggle without power or heat, many of them homeless or living in damaged houses, some fortunate relief workers have been staying at a luxury Manhattan hotel since arriving in town to help with the aftermath of the storm.

Representatives from American Red Cross and Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) said that the two agencies booked a total of 48 rooms in the upscale SoHo Grand to house some of the relief workers at a discounted nightly rate of $310 a room.

Red Cross spokeswoman Laura Howe told the Wall Street Journal that by the time the agency's staffers check out of the residence, which is expected to happen on Friday, the agency will have to pay about $181,000.

Flood water covered swathes of central and northern Italy today after the region was battered by torrential rain.

Devastating storms caused huge damage at the weekend, washing out roads and isolating towns in southern Tuscany, where four people died as a result of flooding.
