Greece Passes 2013 Austerity Budget

Greek lawmakers have approved the country's 2013 austerity budget involving fresh spending cuts.

The budget passed by a 167-128 vote in the 300-member Parliament.

It came days after a separate bill of deep spending cuts and tax hikes for the next two years squeaked through with a narrow majority following severe disagreements among the three parties in the governing coalition.

Venice Hit By Severe Floods

Heavy rain whipped up by strong winds have flooded Venice and led to the evacuation of 200 people in Tuscany, according to reports.

Italian news agencies said 70% of central Venice was under water - bringing the lagoon city's high tide mark to its sixth-highest level since records began being kept 150 years ago.

UK to intervene in Syria soon?

UK's top soldier warns British troops could be deployed to Syria warzone

Hundreds of British troops could be deployed to intervene in Syria if the country descends into chaos.

General Sir David Richards, the UK's top soldier, said contingency plans were in place for a 'very limited' military response if the humanitarian situation worsened.

His admission is the most serious warning yet that Britain could deploy forces to the warzone.

Indianapolis explosion: 2 Killed

The cause of an explosion and fire that killed two people Saturday night when it tore through a residential area of Indianapolis was under investigation on Sunday, authorities said.

"There's a significant number of homes that have sustained damage, including two that have been completely destroyed, no cause has been ruled out," said Marc Lotter, a spokesman for Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard.

"The investigation is ongoing," he said. He added that seven people had been injured in the explosion, which left a large debris field and damaged at least 18 houses in addition to the two that were destroyed.

Israel says may escalate as Hamas joins Gaza clashes

Israel said it was poised to escalate attacks on the Gaza Strip on Sunday following a surge of rocket and mortar salvoes by Hamas and other Palestinian factions.

A missile strike wounded four Israeli troops on jeep patrol along the Gaza boundary on Saturday, triggering army shelling that killed four Palestinian civilians and, in turn, dozens of short-range rocket launches out of Gaza that paralyzed Israel's southern border towns.

Greeks angered by "princes of parliament" pay fight

When Greece's government pushed through a law last week aimed at slashing public wages and raising taxes, its biggest threat was not the firebrand opposition or the 100,000 protesters thronged at the gates of parliament.

It was the assembly's workers themselves, a well-connected group that has long evoked disdain for enjoying the kind of lavish pay and benefits that have become emblematic of the public sector excess at the heart of Greece's debt crisis.

The staff dispute that image. But, having discovered that a 500-odd page draft law of cost cuts and tax hikes included a last minute amendment giving the finance ministry oversight over parliamentary pay, dozens of clerks walked off the job.

"Thieves!" they shouted at parliamentarians as they blocked the doors to the chamber, according to a witness, who saw some workers try to hit journalists who were filming them.

Israel Fires 'Warning Shots' Into Syria

Israel says its forces have fired "warning shots" into Syria after stray mortar fire from fighting in the civil war-hit nation struck the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

It was the first time Israel has been drawn into the fighting in the neighbouring country, and was the first Israeli fire directed at the Syrian military since the 1973 war.

The Israeli army said: "A short while ago, a mortar shell hit an IDF (Israeli Defence Force) post in the Golan Heights adjacent to the Israel-Syria border, as part of the internal conflict inside Syria.

"In response, IDF soldiers fired warning shots towards Syrian areas."

Another report said the Israeli military had fired a missile into Syria.

http://news.sky.com/story/1009967/israel-fires-warning-shots-into-syria

Propaganda alert:
You will notice that almost every Israeli / Western article says these are "the first shots fired at Syria since the 1973 Yom Kippur war. In fact, the last shots were in 2008, when Israeli bombed Syrian nuclear facilities in "Operation Orchard". Facts conveniently left out to make out like Israel isn't a country that arbitrarily bombs its neighbours, and merely "defending itself".

U.S. Congress created this cliff and may now plunge off it

That time is now with the start this week of a lame-duck session of Congress. But it is not at all certain that Republicans and Democrats are ready to make the compromises necessary to undo the trap they set in August 2011.

With all the time available since then, optimists assumed that Congress and President Barack Obama would return after last week's elections with a plan - perhaps a temporary fix - to avoid the $600 billion in tax increases and budget cuts set to start in January that threaten to throw the economy back into recession.

But they didn't.

Gold fever sweeps South Sudan

In Nanakanak, a village of stick huts in an area that has attracted hundreds of diggers since Sudan's civil war ended in 2005, Likuam's find would have been lucrative but unexceptional.

"Everything is luck," he said through a translator. On an average day he might dig up six grams, worth around 1,200 South Sudanese pounds ($270), he said. "Some days you're lucky."

Word of Nanakanak's riches has spread. In the capital Juba, international mining firms are lining up at South Sudan's ministry of petroleum and mining, aiming to get their hands on part of the vast, unexplored territory.

Mitt Romney Had Every Chance to Win—But He Blew It

Mitt Romney could have won. By Tuesday night, it was certain that 48 percent of the country no longer believed in the portrait of hope and change that Barack Obama offered up in 2008—if any ever had. Like the picture of Dorian Gray, the reality had grown somewhat repugnant to vast numbers of voters unhappy with a stagnant economy, even as Obama continued to portray himself as the good-guy savior (from George W. Bush, that is) in the White House.

But in the end, Obama secured a second historic election victory—in the face of staggering unemployment—largely because the alternative portrait that Romney presented to the country was far too incomplete.

Blast levels two homes in Indianapolis, several hurt

A massive explosion that sent flames leaping into the night sky leveled at least two homes in Indianapolis on Saturday and set neighboring houses alight, and several people were hurt in the blast, local media said.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the explosion in a residential neighborhood on the city's south side, which left a large debris field and shattered windows of nearby homes, the Indianapolis Star newspaper reported.
