Syrian Tanks 'Cross Israeli Border'

Israel says three Syrian tanks have entered the demilitarised zone in the Golan Heights for the first time in 40 years, raising concerns that the conflict in Syria could spillover its border.

The development comes as dramatic video emerged from Syria which purports to show rebels filming as a fighter jet targeted them.

In a relatively low-key response, Israel complained to UN peacekeepers present in the area, suggesting it did not see an immediate threat.

Running on empty: Fury as storm-hit gas stations are forced to CLOSE - while others charge desperate drivers SIX dollars a gallon

Tensions are running high at gas stations in New Jersey and New York, with one motorist allegedly pulling a pistol on another during an argument in a queue for fuel.

HOW SANDY SPARKED A GAS CRISIS

  • Fuel is running out in the tri-state area for a number of reasons, after flooding and power outages caused by the floods affected both the production, import and distribution of gas. Here's why it's happening:
  • Two refineries that make up a quarter of the region's refining capacity are still idle due to power outages or flooding.
  • The New York Harbor waterway that imports a fifth of the area's fuel is still closed to traffic.
  • Major import terminals are damaged and powerless.
  • The lack of power means many pumps cannot work, so there are fewer gas stations open.
  • With public transport suffering and fears over the fuel shortage, many drivers are stockpiling gas, making the problem worse.
  • Many in New Jersey need gas not only for their cars, but also to heat their homes

Romney's Changing Views on FEMA - And Why They Could be a Disaster for Texas

As with so many issues, Romney's position on FEMA has been an evolution:

  • As governor of Massachusetts, Romney accepted FEMA money to help clean up after some severe storms.
  • Before the Republican primaries, Romney suggested FEMA be privatized: "Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that's even better."
  • As Republican presidential nominee, Romney dodged questions about FEMA for days after Sandy.
  • And after observing the necessity and popularity of federal disaster relief efforts, Romney came out in support of FEMA - or at least giving it "the funding it needs to fulfill its mission."

There are two ways to look at this. One is that Romney is unbelievably short-sighted for a presidential nominee. He thinks federal disaster relief is a good idea every time there's a disaster, but not in between - like someone who only considers health insurance after they get sick.

Queens residents arm themselves in the post-storm blackout from looters

When night falls in the Rockaways, the hoods come out.

Ever since Sandy strafed the Queens peninsula and tore up the boardwalk, it’s become an often lawless place where cops are even scarcer than electrical power and food. Locals say they are arming themselves with guns, baseball bats, booby traps — even a bow and arrow — to defend against looters.

Thugs have been masquerading as Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) workers, knocking on doors in the dead of night. But locals say the real workers have been nowhere in sight, causing at least one elected official — who fears a descent into anarchy if help doesn’t arrive soon — to call for the city to investigate the utility.
