North Korea Missile Launch Expected Within Hours, Will Land Near Australia (Duck, our Ozzie friends!)

North Korea is expected to launch a long-range rocket in the next 24 to 48 hours, according to a U.S. official.

The official says that based on the amount of fuel the North Koreans have pumped into the rocket, the trajectory could be very long. The rocket is now expected to travel south by southeast, crossing over the Philippines and, if successful, splashing down in waters not far from Australia.

Many of the countries along the route have asked for U.S. assistance in tracking the missile’s trajectory, which has sophisticated radars and a number of antiballistic missile ships in the region.

The White House and the State Department have stayed in close contact with Asian nations.

The primary focus, however, has been putting pressure on China to rein in North Korea, which thus far has shown little willingness to cooperate. “It is fair to say that the Chinese are spending most of their time telling the U.S. to relax,” the official said.

But the missile launch is not expected to end the provocation by North Korea. Officials fear a nuclear test will soon follow. Large amounts of dirt and ground cover are being moved at one of North Korea’s nuclear sites, which experts believe indicates the North Koreans will test a nuclear device once the rocket test is complete. Even more alarming is that officials believe that, unlike the first two nuclear tests North Korea conducted with plutonium, this one could be a uranium device, which would indicate a secret uranium facility. more

Wall Of Water: The Tsunami Explained

During a tsunami the ocean suddenly floods the coast, smashing everything in its path, and then just as quickly recedes.

Large quakes are the main cause of tsunamis, but they can also be sparked by other cataclysmic events, such as volcanic eruptions and even landslides.

During a strong quake, oceanic plates can lurch many metres and rupture the ocean floor.

This movement can suddenly move a massive amount of water.

:: Read about today's quakes in Indonesia

Major quakes that rupture the ocean floor are usually shallow quakes occurring at a depth of less than 44 miles (70km).

The 9.1 magnitude quake that caused the devastating 2004 Boxing Day tsunami was 18 miles (30km) below the seafloor.

The movement of the quake can also affect the likelihood of a tsunami occuring.

The vertical movement of some earthquakes can cause the seabed to heave and displace water vertically, sending towering waves racing toward shores.

The 2004 tsunami, which killed nearly a quarter of a million people, and the 2011 disaster in Japan were both caused by these "mega thrust" quakes. Read More

Satellite documents thinning ice shelf

(CNN) -- A European satellite has observed a rapid retreat of one of Antarctica's ice shelves, which is half the size it was 10 years ago, the European Space Agency said Thursday.

The agency's Envisat satellite shows part of the Larsen Ice Shelf, which lies on a peninsula south of Chile, has decreased from 3,463 square kilometers (1,337 square miles) in March 2002 to 1,670 square kilometers (645 square miles) today, a change the European Space Agency blames on warmer temperatures.

"Ice shelves are sensitive to atmospheric warming and to changes in ocean currents and temperatures," Helmut Rott from the University of Innsbruck said in an statement from the space agency. "The northern Antarctic Peninsula has been subject to atmospheric warming of about 2.5 degrees Celsius (4.5 Fahrenheit degrees) over the last 50 years -- a much stronger warming trend than on global average, causing retreat and disintegration of ice shelves."

The waning is happening on the Larsen B ice shelf, one of three shelves that make up the Larsen Ice Shelf. Read More

Iran: Israeli operatives arrested

(CNN) -- Iran said it has broken up an Israeli "terror and sabotage network" that was planning attacks within the country, making a number of arrests while confiscating weapons and equipment, state-run media reported.

"The complicated and months-long measures and moves made by the Iranian intelligence forces to identify the devils led to the discovery of the Zionists' regional command center ... and discovering the identity of the agents active in that command center," a statement from the Iranian Intelligence Ministry said, according to the Fars News Agency.

Paul Hirschson, a spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry said that every few months Iran spreads disinformation and there is no basis to the story.

The developments come ahead of the scheduled resumption of nuclear talks between Iran and six world powers in Istanbul, Turkey, on Saturday. Read More

Spain and EU reject talk of bailout

(Financial Times) -- Spanish ministers and European Union officials took turns on Tuesday to deny that the country needed an international bailout, in an effort to soothe the bond market.

Investors have taken fright at the size of Spain's budget deficit, the rise in its public debt and the weakness of domestic banks.

Luis de Guindos, the economy minister, ruled out a bailout of the kind already provided to Greece, Ireland and Portugal by the EU and the International Monetary Fund, saying Spain "does not need a rescue at this time".

Cristóbal Montoro, the budget minister, rejected suggestions that Spain could turn to the EU to prop up its banking system, saying the liquidity provided by the European Central Bank was already substantial.

Despite a sharp sell-off in Spanish sovereign debt and equities, senior EU officials insisted there had been no discussions about assisting Madrid with aid from the eurozone's €500bn rescue fund. Instead, Brussels was pushing the government to implement the tough reforms already announced. Read More

Charles Manson denied parole, with next parole hearing set for 2027

Corcoran, California (CNN) -- Notorious killer Charles Manson, 77, was denied parole Wednesday after a California parole panel "could find nothing good as far as suitability" for his being paroled, a commissioner said.

Manson didn't show up for his parole hearing, held at a state prison in Corcoran, California, where he is serving a life sentence.

Manson's next parole hearing was scheduled 15 years from now, meaning he could die in prison.

California Board of Parole Hearings Commissioner John Peck said that Manson has accumulated 108 serious disciplinary violations in prison since 1971, and that he has shown no indication of remorse for his nine murder convictions.

Manson hasn't participated in any self-help programs or vocational training, Peck said. Manson also hasn't shown any parole plans, Peck said.

Peck also cited Manson's statement to a psychologist in a prison interview on November 2, 2011, in which Manson stated: Read More

Greek prime minister calls snap election

Athens (CNN) -- Greece will hold parliamentary elections May 6, Prime Minister Lucas Papademos announced Wednesday.

His televised announcement came after he met with President Karolos Papoulias to ask him to dissolve the current parliament.

Papademos said the past five months had shown that Greece could make the difficult decisions needed to confront its debt crisis and ensure a better future.

The new government, once elected, would have a difficult task ahead of it, he said, as he called for everyone to work together.

Dissolving parliament does not mean dissolving the government, as a number of significant decisions must be made by May 6, Papademos said. Read More

Chinese, Philippines Navies in "Standoff" at South China Sea; Coming Crisis following situation (New posts appear below for the next several hours)

The Philippines and China agreed to resolve an ongoing naval standoff diplomatically, but neither side was ready to back down Wednesday in the most dangerous confrontation in the disputed South China Sea in years.

Foreign Secretary Albert Del Rosario said he warned Chinese Ambassador Ma Keqing that the Philippines would defend itself if provoked. At their meeting, both insisted the Scarborough Shoal location was part of their own country's territory.

Despite the impasse, "we resolved to seek a diplomatic solution to the issue," Del Rosario told a news conference.

"Nobody will benefit if violence breaks out there," President Benigno Aquino III said.

The Philippine government said its navy tried to detain Chinese boats fishing in its waters, but was stopped by two Chinese surveillance craft. The Chinese Embassy accused the Philippine warship of harassing the fishermen.

The South China Sea is home to a myriad of competing territorial claims, most notably the Spratly Islands south of the shoal, that are believed to be in rich in oil and gas. The region is also prime fishing ground and one of the world's busiest sea lanes.

Both China and the Philippines flexed their muscles Wednesday. Del Rosario said that he warned China's ambassador that "if the Philippines is challenged, we are prepared to secure our sovereignty." more

Rogue Wave New Zealand: Seven missing after boat capsizes

One survivor has been found after a fishing vessel with nine on board hit a rogue wave and capsized in New Zealand's Foveaux Strait.

The survivor was plucked from the water about 6pm (4pm AEDT) on Thursday, after spending 18 hours in the water. It has also been reported that one body has been found.

Police said the Easy Rider sailed from Bluff on Wednesday evening with three crew and six passengers who were going to be dropped off on the Mutton Bird Islands at the Great South Cape.

The boat failed to rendezvous with a helicopter at about 2pm on Thursday. The helicopter pilot alerted police and they mounted a search and rescue operation.

The survivor was plucked from the sea around Bishops and Clerk Islands, to the west of Stewart Island.

He was taken to Southland Hospital where he told police that he was on deck with two others about midnight when a rogue wave hit, causing the boat to capsize almost immediately.

He said the rest of the passengers were in the wheelhouse.

"The survivor was able to pull himself up onto the hull where he remained for approximately two hours before the boat sank," Inspector Lance Todd of Invercargill police said in a statement. Read More

Container ship sunk after collision, Vietnam

Several hours after a collision with Krairatch Dignity, a Thai ship, offshore Vung Tau city on the evening of April 9, a Vietnamese ship named Truong Hai Star sunk with 66 containers.

After the accident, the Vietnamese ships transmitted SOS signals. The Vung Tau Port Authorities sent vessels to tow this ship to Bai Truoc in Vung Tau city.

However, at around 2.30am of April 10, the ship was completely sunken near Bai Truoc, with 66 containers of cargo.

Sixteen sailors on the ship were rescued and taken to the shore.

The Vung Port Authorities are fishing out containers. They have also surrounded the ship with buoys to prevent an oil spill, if it happens. However, no oil spill was reported until late afternoon of April 10.

Rescue workers fished out around 30 containers from the sunken ship by the end of April 10.

It is reported that most of containers contain cars and automobile components. Read More

Smuggled Chickens on Bali Bus Infected With Bird Flu

Denpasar. Quarantine officials in Bali have culled hundreds of chickens infected with bird flu that were smuggled onto the island from East Java, an official said on Tuesday.

Wahyu Savitri, the executive head of the Gilimanuk quarantine office, said the chickens were discovered hiding in the baggage hold of an inter-province bus that had departed from East Java.

Rapid tests conducted on some of the birds showed that they carried the H5N1 virus that causes avian influenza.

“Unfortunately, the owner of the birds was not arrested because he did not travel onboard the bus,” Wahyu said.

He said the smuggling of chickens into Bali was rife because the poultry could fetch better prices on the island.

“Just this year, there have already been three smuggling attempts foiled,” Wahyu said, without providing details.

The chickens found on the bus, he continued, were believed to have been intended for sale at markets in Denpasar, the provincial capital.

Bird flu has so far been detected nine districts and municipalities in Bali. Read More
